• What liability concerns do advertising vendors raise, and how can I address them?

  One of the websites I administer wants to provide free advertising in the form of direct links to vendors at an event they are running. Up until now, there has been no advertising whatsoever on the site (or any of our other sites). The site is for a for-profit business. The idea of implicit endorsement of any vendors we advertise has been raised, which brought up the question of what we need to do, if anything, to protect ourselves from any potential problems such endorsement might create. I know that many sites have clauses in their Terms of Service that state that (in a nutshell) they are not responsible for any problems or grievances between the visitors to the site and any vendor advertised or linked. Are there other steps that a website typically takes when considering advertising, such as getting the advertiser to provide some sort of certification that their ad will not violate any trademarks or copyrighted material?

  We have a client with a facebook page, let's say his company is called Bob Roberts Super Widgets. And if you search in Facebook for Bob Roberts Super Widgets then up he pops. But the shorthand he's commonly known by is BR Super Widgets and indeed the website we've created for him is br-super-widgets.com. In Facebook, searching for BR Super Widgets doesn't show up our Mr Bob. We don't have a lot of Facebook expertise, so asking for help here. Does anyone know how to ensure you're found in Facebook search for both short and long company names? Have found this this similar question in the Facebook forum but the poor old questioner never got a response.

  This question already has an answer here: Stopping Google index some web pages I have 5 answers I've researched many methods on how to prevent Google/other search engines from crawling a specific directory. The two most popular ones I've seen are: Adding it into the robots.txt file: Disallow: /directory/ Adding a meta tag: <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"> Which method would work the best? I want this directory to remain "invisible" from search engines so it does not affect any of my site's ranking. In other words, I want this directory to be neutral/invisible and "just there." I don't want it to affect any ranking. Which method would be the best to achieve this?

  I have inherited and now further develop a large application consisting of an ASP.NET application, VB6 and VB.NET application. The software was poorly written. I am trying to refactor the code as I go along. The changes I am making are not live (they are contained in a folder on my development machine). This is proving to be time consuming and I am doing this along side other work which is the prioritiy. My question is: is this a practical approach or is there a better methodology for refactoring code? I don't have any experience with version control software or source control software and I am wandering if this is what I am missing. I am a sole developer.

• USB external drive is not recognized by any OS, how to troubleshoot in Ubuntu?

  First of all I would like to inform you that I saw a question similar to mine but the error was different, so here's my problem... I have an external HD samsung s2 model of 500GB and a day to day just stopped working, tried in other systems (windows and mac) however are not recognized. About myself I started my career with desktop development using C and then Java, did couple of simple level projects. Then at the final graduating year, my project was a web one, so I turned to web development until this moment. But, when I meet people having chosen to be web or software developers from the beginning, I figure out that they have more knowledge/experience than I have. • Is there a variable width font that does not change width when adding effects like bold, italic?

  NetBeans has a word wrap feature now - but if the font changes width when bold then it gets all jumpy and sometimes hard to work with. Edit: It turns out that even with Courier New that NetBeans word wrap still jumps up and down lines at a time at random. I guess that this question no longer cares for an answer. However,, it seems that there is no answer. (at least nobody has brought one up yet) I am currently using Comic Sans MS which gets wider when bold.

  I understand robots.txt and its purpose. I have read some people saying that using a Robots.txt gives "bad" robots or robots who do not obey a robots.txt a way to access pages on your site that you do not want accessed. While I am not looking to get into a debate about that I do have a question: If I have a structure like this: /Folder/ /Sub-Folder 1/ /Sub-Folder 2/ (Note: There are no pages within /Folder/ only other folders.) If I Disallow: /Folder/ it will prevent "good" robots from accessing the directory and any contents within the sub-folders. While we know that bad robots will see the /Folder/ will they be able to see and acess the sub-folders and the pages within the subfolders if they are not listed in the robots.txt? (Note: I do not fully understand how robots good or bad crawl a site beyond using a robots.txt and links within the site.)

• Do subdomains need to be defined through domain registerar?

  I have bought a new domain name from GoDaddy. Let's say it is abcd.com. On GoDaddy's DNS Managing page, I changed A(Host) part to @ = 74.125.232.215 which is www.google.co.uk's IP address. Now if I type www.abcd.com, it directly goes to www.google.co.uk. But if I type http://test.abcd.com, it cannot be loaded. Do I need to define every subdomain through GoDaddy? Is this how it work? P.S. Amazon EC2 directly generates a subdomain for users to reach their virtual PCs. It cannot be domain registerar dependant. P.S.2. Same question for using "www2" at the start of url.

  This question asks about the ergonomics of a particular keyboard for long programming hours, what I would like to know is about the ergonomics of using a keyboard in general. What are the most significant risks associated with it and how can they best be mitigated? Do the "ergonomic" keyboard designs make a difference and if so which design is most effective? If not do other factors such as wrist-rests, regular exercise or having a suitable height of chair or desk make a difference? Do you have any direct experience of problems deriving from keyboard use and if so how did you resolve them? Is there any good science on this and if so what does it indicate? Edited to add: Wikipedia suggests that there are no proven advantages to "ergonomic" keyboards, but their citation seems pretty old- is that still the current state of play?

• Using a subset of GetHashCode() to increase AzureTable performance through partitioning

  Generally speaking, Azure Table IO performance improves as more partitions are used (with some tradeoffs in continuation tokens and batch updates I won't go into). Since the partition key is always a string I am considering using a "natural" load balancing technique based on a subset of the GetHashCode() of the partition key, and appending this subset to the partition key itself. This will allow all direct PK/RK queries to be computed with little overhead and with ease. Batch updates may just need an intermediate to group similar PKs together prior to submission. Question: Should I use GetHashCode() to compute the partition key? Is a better function available? If I use GetHashCode() does it matter which character I use for my PK? Is there an abstraction for Azure Table and Blob storage that does this for me already?

  Are there any techniques that you find useful or follow when it comes to reading and understanding code written by others when Direct Knowledge Transfer/meeting the person who wrote the code is not an option. One of the techniques that I follow when dealing with legacy code is by adding additional debugging statements and based on the values I figure out the flow/logic. This can be tedious at times. However, after reading up on lexers has confused me. The Wikipedia page states that: the GNU Compiler Collection (gcc) uses hand-written lexers I have tried googling what a hand written lexer and have come up with nothing except for "making a flowchart that describes how it should function", however, isn't that how all software development should be done? • Help deploying using Capistrano to HostGator

  My company uses HostGator to host our web sites, and I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what my final steps are to get a functioning RoR app up there. I've got all the way up to configuring mongrel (I think?) and being able to run deploy:cold without any errors. However, I can't seem to get the app to show up in the designated CPanel area (HG says the name "current" is already reserved for another application), and I'm not sure which port was allowed for me to use. I've opened tickets with Customer Support just to be told that "You can't access the database with root"... Totally unrelated to my question... So I think I'm in the final stretch and if anyone has any insight or experience with HostGator, please cue me in.

The software/hardware environment I currently do development in is quite slow with respect to compilation times and time it takes the whole system to test. The system is quite old/complex and thus splitting it into a several smaller, more manageable sub-projects is not feasible in a neare future. • how do you read from system.out in Java [closed]

  I'm trying to create a word scramble game and so far I have taken a vector of randomly assorted strings that contains both words and hints and split them into two vectors. I have randomly scrambled the word and set this all up in text boxes. Right now I'm stuck because I have a text box that takes input but I'm not sure how to read that in? I want the user to type the unscrambled word into the text box and have it calculate as correct and move on to the next word immediately. I also don't know how to get the keys working. I want the "?" character to be the hint button that shows the hint. At the moment the hint box works if I type the question mark in using the System.in but it doesn't work if I type it directly in to the text box. The characters are showing up in the text box but nothing is working after that.

There is a link on the individual page to the list view. We want to index in google for the term Abelia chinensis. My question revolves around the list view and its impact on SEO.
