• WMIC returns error when querying product

  I'm trying to automate the installation of an MSI on my server, however before the installation can go ahead I need to uninstall the previous version from the server. Searching on the internet I've found that WMIC is the tool required but there seems to be a problem with the setup of WMI on the server. Running the following command gives errors: command promptwmic then inside the tool /trace:on product get name This returns a long string of successes and one failure: FAIL: IEnumWbemClassObject->Next(WBEM_INFINITE, 1, -, -) Line: 396 File: d:\nt\admin\wmi\wbem\tools\wmic\execengine.cpp Node - ENTECHORELDEV ERROR: Code = 0x80041010 Description = The specified class is not valid. • Website content hosted with Google. Good or bad?

  I recently decided to host my styles.css and various scripts on Google Docs and link them into my website. I also have all my images hosted through Picasa so that they too will load much faster and consistently across users. My site has most of its traffic from Japan, Africa, and South America, so I assume there will be a performance boost for my users since my server is hosted in Hong Kong. I (in Canada) have measured my load times to be half of what they used to be. Basically it's a free CDN for my personal stuff. I'm not too sure about all of this yet, so here's my question: what are the caveats of this setup? EDIT: So after rummaging through the ToS of both Picasa and Docs, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with this kind of use.

• How can I make sftp accounts that can only access their home directory?

  I'm using Ubuntu Server 9.10. I need to setup 6 accounts for users that will exclusively need sftp. When the user logs in, I need them to only have access to their home directory. I don't want them to be able to navigate to any other places in the file system. I need their ability to type commands to be limited to only the commands needed to view and transfer files back and forth to their home directory. Can anyone offer some guidance on setting thing up this way?

• Remote logging for multiple Apache virtual hosts using syslog-ng

  I'm running a couple Apache web servers that each have 4-8 separate virtual hosts on each of them. I'm trying to setup a dedicated log server that stores each virtual host access and errors logs in a separate directory for that virtual host. For example on the logging server, /var/log/remove/10.0.0.2/virtualhost1 contains access_log and error_log /var/log/remove/10.0.0.2/virtualhost2 contains access_log and error_log /var/log/remove/10.0.0.3/virtualhost3 contains access_log and error_log and so on... Right now I have it split up by host but I can't figure out how to do it additionally by virtual host. Here are the relevant lines from the logging server's syslog-ng.conf source r_src { tcp(ip("0.0.0.0") port(5140)); }; destination r_all { file("/opt/splunk/logs/$HOST"); }; log { source(r_src); destination(r_all); }; Any help would be appreciated. • Is NAN suitable for communicating that an invalid parameter was involved in a calculation?

  I am currently working on a numerical processing system that will be deployed in a performance-critical environment. It takes inputs in the form of numerical arrays (these use the eigen library, but for the purpose of this question that's perhaps immaterial), and performs some range of numerical computations (matrix products, concatenations, etc.) to produce outputs. All arrays are allocated statically and their sizes are known at compile time. However, some of the inputs may be invalid. In these exceptional cases, we still want the code to be computed and we still want outputs not "polluted" by invalid values to be used. To give an example, let's take the following trivial example (this is pseudo-code): Matrix a = {1, 2, NAN, 4}; // this is the "input" matrix Scalar b = 2; Matrix output = b * a; // this results in {2, 4, NAN, 8} The idea here is that 2, 4 and 8 are usable values, but the NAN should signal to the receipient of the data that that entry was involved in an operation that involved an invalid value, and should be discarded (this will be detected via a std::isfinite(value) check before the value is used). Is this a sound way of communicating and propagating unusable values, given that performance is critical and heap allocation is not an option (and neither are other resource-consuming constructs such as boost::optional or pointers)? Are there better ways of doing this? At this point I'm quite happy with the current setup but I was hoping to get some fresh ideas or productive criticism of the current implementation.

• SLI Artifact issues

  When I enable SLI I keep getting artifacts in random games and in Windows Aero sometimes . It doesn't seem to be about over-heating as it happens randomly, and sometimes whole computers just crashes (not blue-screen, just black gone...) My setup: Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB ( http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr88512gtoce.aspx ) x 2 GIGABYTE EX58-UD4 Windows 7 RC PSU 800W I've got the latest NVIDIA drivers and F5 BIOS update (*SLI update*). When I disable SLI and use the cards separately they are working just fine even in games. Any idea why this might happen?

• Strange strace and setuid behaviour: permission denied under strace, but not running normally.

I have a script (fix-permissions.sh) that fixes some file permissions: #! /bin/bash sudo chown -R person:group /path/ sudo chmod -R g+rw /path/ And a small c program to run this, which is setuided: #include "sys/types.h" #include "unistd.h" int main(){ setuid(geteuid()); return system("/path/fix-permissions.sh"); } Directory: -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 7228 Feb 19 17:33 fix-permissions -rwx--x--x 1 root root 112 Feb 19 13:38 fix-permissions.sh If I do this, everything seems fine, and the permissions do get correctly fixed: james $ sudo su someone-else someone-else $ ./fix-permissions but if I use strace, I get: someone-else $ strace ./fix-permissions /bin/bash: /path/fix-permissions.sh: Permission denied It's interesting to note that I get the same permission denied error with an identical setup (permissions, c program), but a different script, even when not using strace. Is this some kind of heureustic magic behaviour in setuid that I'm uncovering? How should I figure out what's going on? System is Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, Linux 2.6.32.26-kvm-i386-20101122 #1 SMP

Today I wanted to get all the latest bits on my demo machine and also check if there are any cool new resources I can point people at. Whilst most of the new improvements in Entity Framework come with the Visual Studio 2010 RC (and the RTM), there are a couple of separate items you need to install if you want to explore all the features. To demo EF4 you need: Visual Studio 2010 RC Download and install the Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate. In my case I went from the Ultimate Edition but it will work fine on Premium and Professional. POCO Templates See the team blog post for a detailed explanation. • Mac OSX Server 10.6 DNS Issues

  The server was upgraded from 10.5 from 10.6, during the upgrade the Reverse Zones were lost so I tried to recreate these but found that it's best to delete all zones, definitions and start again. So I've started again and Reverse Zones are appearing but I'm still having issues. • use of tcp_delack_min on redhat linux (kernel 2.6.18)

  Hello, we're moving from Solaris to Redhat Linux, and trying to duplicate our low-latency setup, that, on solaris, includes the ndd settings related to TCP NO DELAY, and NAGLE ALGORITHM. I got the impression that those parameters are not all configurable system-wide, but still found some info. we have configured our applications to run with no nagle algorithm, but that is not sufficient. we have found an interesting RH article talking presenting the tcp_delack_min parameter, however, when browsing /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ , I can't find it there. would it be safe to assume that simply "adding" the parameter as it's said on the doc would be enough, or rather that the option is not supported by this version (would be strange, as RH specify that it "can be performed on a standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation") ? any other idea / recommendation to improve latency further ? thanks

• Term for unit testing that separates test logic from test result data

  So I'm not doing any unit testing. But I've had an idea to make it more appropriate for my field of use. Yet it's not clear if something like this exists, and if, how it would possibly be called. Ordinary unit tests combine the test logic and the expected outcome. In essence the testing framework only checks for booleans (did this match, did the expected result result). To generalize, the test code itself references the audited functions, and also explicites the result values like so: unit::assert( test_me() == 17 ) What I'm looking for is a separation of concerns. The test itself should only contain the tested logic. The outcome and result data should be handled by the unit testing or assertion framework. As example: unit::probe( test_me() ) Here the probe actually doubles as collector in the first run, and afterwards as verification method. The expected 17 is not mentioned in the test code, but stored or managed elsewhere. How is this scheme called? Or how would you call it? I hope I can find some actual implementations with the proper terminology. Obviously such a pattern is unfit for TDD. It's strictly for regression testing. Also obviously, it cannot be used for all cases. Only the simpler test subjects can be analyzed that way, for anything else the ordinary unit test setup and assertion steps are required. And yes, this could be manually accomplished by crafting a ResultWhateverObject, but that would still require hardwiring that to the test logic. Also keep in mind that I'm inquiring for use with scripting languages, and not about Java. I'm aware that the xUnit pattern originates there, and why it's hence as elaborate as it is. Btw, I've discovered one test execution framework which allows for shortening simple test notations to: test_me(); // 17 While thus the result data is no longer coded in (it's a comment), that's still not a complete separation and of course would work only for scalar results.

• Very slow disk performance on Dell PowerEdge 2950 w/ PERC 6/i running RAID 10

  I recently set up a server running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 server - it has 6 500 gb 7200RPM SATA drives setup in a RAID 10 config. I am seeing extremely poor disk performance - the RAID array reports all disks are normal and using MegaCLI, it looks like the BBU is fine. hdparm -tT /dev/sda reports: Timing cached reads: 90 MB in 2.05 seconds = 43.96 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 24 MB in 3.11 seconds = 7.72 MB/sec So as you can see, it takes forever to something as simple as an apt-get upgrade and even logging into the server. How do I go about troubleshooting what is causing this? I upgraded the firmware on the PERC 6i RAID controller to the latest, but didn't see any improvements.

• Installing VS2010 components with SP1 beta

  Hello, I hope this is the place for this kind of question. I have VS2010 ult with the Service Pack 1 beta installed. I want to play with F# and I need to install it. The problem is that because I have the SP1 installed, the VS DVD can't install the F# compiler. I click on add new feature, I click on F#, the installer says: "A selected drive is not longer valid. Please review your installation path settings before continuing with setup." Of course the path is correct and I can't change it anyway... I think that problem is because I have the SP1. I had the same problem in the past with VS2008 + SP1. What can I do? Uninstalling VS2010 is not an option, it take ages. Thank you.

• Cannot set "Language for Non-Unicode Programs" in Regional and Language Settings

  I'm trying to set the Language for Non-Unicode Programs from English to Japanese (I'm using Windows XP SP 3), but it won't let me. It looks like I've got the East Asian Language packs installed, but when I select "Japanese" from the drop-down box and hit "Apply" I get an error that says "Setup was unable to install the chosen locale. Please contact your system administrator". I'm already logged in as the administrator, and I've restarted several times but it still won't let me. Can anyone give me an idea as to how to solve this problem? Reinstalling Windows is absolutely out of the question.

That said our primary feature that we use google apps calendar for is sharing calendars. Best way to using office 2011... To sync calendars with an iPhone? To sync/share calendars between users? To sync contacts with an iphone? To sync/share contacts with between users? Users are on other computers and mostly work from home Needs to be fool proof once setup :-) I am not fond of the idea of syncing outlook with Mac address book and ical then to the iphone.

• How to partition Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 2TB hard disk?

  Hi I bought a new Seagate 2TB external hard disk. I opened the drive's application in my virtual windows, did product registration using the application present in it. I have few questions on how best to use it. The drive by default has some files and folders - setup.exe, System Volume Information, USB 3.0 PC Card Adapter etc,. I copied all the files to my laptop. Is it safe to delete these files? It has a dash board for windows which allows to tune power options, test the drive etc. Will I be able to use the dash board if I put back all these files and mount on windows again? I want to partition and format the hard disk. Data I like to store is Around 10 to 20 GB Files - Virtual box images. Around 4GB Files - Dvd images. Other Movies and personal Files. What is the best filesystem to store very huge files like 10 to 20GB files. So that they are written and accessed fast also best uses the drive's capacity. If I leave one of the partition as ntfs and others to different files systems, will it be able to mount on windows and Will I be able to use the device's dash board? Note: I dont need any encryption for my data. Any other advice on using the hard disk is also welcome.

• How to rebuild fstab automatically

  I accidentally removed all the entries from the fstab files while doing a backup (Yeah, I know ;)). I would like to know if there is a way to rebuild it with the current mount options, since I did not restart the server since the deletion. If there is no such program, could anybody help me rebuild it. • Send option/alt key press to OS X connected from Windows via VNC?

  I recently started using a mac running Leopard Server remotely at work, using the RealVNC client to connect from my Windows XP workstation via the Leopard VNC server. As I need to do a fair amount of editing, I would like to have the keys mapped to the same positions as the macs I have been using for a long time. The Ctrl key works as Ctrl, and the Alt key works as Cmd, which is good, but I have had no success getting the Windows logo key to work as Option/Alt. It's seriously affecting my productivity in XCode and Terminal. Has anybody with the same setup solved this question, either by configuring Windows and/or the VNC client, or otherwise?

• How do I stop my ethernet network connection from dropping?

  My ethernet-based network connection doesn't stay up consistently. I'm running a ping against the gateway and it will: Work for a minute Freeze, time out, or give multi-second response times Repeat If it's stuck and I disable/enable networking through the network manager applet everything will work fine again for a minute. After 280 packets transmitted I'm getting 41% packet loss. I've tried a different cable and connection to the gateway but this had no effect. The distance to the gateway is just about 3 feet. Seems to work fine if I switch over to Windows, but Ubuntu is my main OS and I can't even use it right now as I depend on the network. My setup... OS: Ubuntu 11.04, dual-booting Windows 7 Mobo: Gigabyte Z68X-UD4-B3 CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K Edit A little clarification... Network Manager is still showing me as connected, but I am unable to reach to gateway or anything beyond. At no point does NM suggest the connection is lost and calling ifconfig shows that I still have an IP address. • Intgrating windows 2000 server in a windows 2008 domain [on hold]

  I have a network enviroment where my windows 2000 server is just acting as fileserver for sharing, so all the users has an account there with username, password and a list of access rights. Now i want to keep this server cause i am running from there an application that 20 users access but also i want to add a new Windows 2008 R2 64 bit server as a domain controller. Is this possible ? 1-It is ok to make the new windows 2008 server a domain controller ? 2- I want all the users accounts to be the same in the domain controller so they can still use the same username and password to login into the domain as well into the windows 2000 server that is setup as a Workgroup. 3- Do i need to do something to the windows 2000 sever to still be functional in the environment so it can be accessed by the clients computers? note:My clients computers are windows 2000 pro, xp pro and windows 7 32/64 bit. • Updating Cisco VPN config to add vpnc support

  I have a Cisco 1841 configured for VPN connections of two types: Peer-to-peer for partners' routers (IPsec) — using different crypto isakmp key and crypto map with set peer, set transform-set, match address for every peer (same map name, different priorities). That crypto map name is added to the WAN interface. Client access (PPTP) — using vpdn-group with accept-dialin protocol pptp. Now, a new partner wants to connect using vpnc client. The latter needs IPSec ID (group name) and IPSec secret in addition to username and password. I guess that IPSec secret is pre-shared key that can be specified in crypto isakmp key on Cisco. But I could not find any VPN tutorials involving groups. Hence, my questions: How to add IPSec ID (group name) and IPSec secret on Cisco router for vpnc connections? Should I add a new crypto map matching all addresses as well? Is it possible to add this configuration without breaking the existing setup? Thank you.

I'd like to modify these property sets (eg: add a new member) at run time so that the definition of the property sets can be externalized and the code itself can be re-used with multiple versions/types of property sets with minimal/no changes. For example, a property set could look like this: struct PropSetA { bool activeFlag; int processingCount; /* snip few other such fields*/ }; But instead of setting its definition in stone at compile time, I'd like to create it dynamically at run time. Eg: operator bool() { return (baseType == BOOLEAN) ? this->ToBoolean() : false; } // And a method to create PropValues various base datatypes static FromBool(bool baseValue); }; class PropSet { public: // overloaded[] operator for adding properties void operator()(std::string propName, bool propVal) { propMap.insert(std::make_pair(propName, PropVal::FromBool(propVal))); } protected: // the property map std::map<std::string, PropValue> propMap; }; This problem at hand is similar to this question on SO and the current approach (described above) is based on this answer. But as noted over at SO this is more of a hack than a proper solution. The fundamental issues that I have with this approach are as follows: Extending this for supporting new types will require significant code change. At the bare minimum overloaded operators need to be extended to support the new type. Supporting complex properties (eg: struct containing struct) is tricky. Supporting a reference mechanism (needed for an optimization of not duplicating identical property sets) is tricky. This also applies to supporting pointers and multi-dimensional arrays in general. Are there any known patterns for dealing with this scenario? Essentially, I'm looking for the equivalent of the visitor pattern, but for extending class properties rather than methods.   Hello everyone I have an app need to test via wifi. I just wonder if there is a way to turn my Mac Mini into a Wi-Fi Hotspot without additional tool. I try to setup airport new network name is"mymacmini'. My iPod Touch also can recognize the network "mymacmini". I set my iPod wifi as "mymacmini" But if I try to connect to Internet, Safari always reports failure and connnection with Wifi. I hope to know if I need purchase a wireless router for MAc Mini or there are something wrong I did above? Thanks interdev
