  • adding tagged / dynamic pages in sitemap

    ive got a blog thats been running for about a year ive made about 200 posts, and there should be about 220 pages to index (additional pages for about / contact ect). When i go to crawl the site i get 1900 pages because of all the pages that are related to tags ive used in my blogs these 70% of these pages only contain one blog post. When submitting my site map to google should i exclude all pages with /tagged/ in the url so ill only be submitting unqiue pages, or should i submit the full site map ?

  • Data Movement and the Decision Matrix

    Maybe it’s my military background, or maybe I’ve always had this predilection, but I like to use two devices when I need to make a complex decision: A checklist and a decision matrix. I like to use a checklist because it ensures that I remember the big bits of what I need to do, and brings up questions or areas that I didn’t think about when evaluating options for the decision. And the decision matrix – that’s the thing I use to actually lay out those options. It’s simply a spreadsheet-like grid (I use Excel, but paper and pencil works as well) that lays out the requirements or advantages for the decision across the top, and the options I have on the left-hand side. Then in the “cells” I put whether or not that option on the left will meet the requirement in that column. I then simply “weight” each cell to organize the choices by best-fit. The right answer (or answers) will float right to the top. I was asked yesterday about options for moving data in SQL Server to another system. There are just dozens of ways to do this, from bcp to Replication, each with certain advantages and costs. But asking the questions for the top row first helped me show the person that it isn’t a particular technology that is important, it’s laying out those requirements and thinking about which elements are more important than the other. For instance, is it more important to have the data moved all the time, or is it OK if that happens once in a while? Does the data have to move in two directions or just one? All of these will help that answer jump right out. Try it sometime – it’s a great learning exercise, since it will force you to focus on filling out the matrix. The answer is out there, Neo.   • How to properly remove URL's from Google's index?

    On some of our sites, we now have several thousand pages that dilute our website's keyword density. The website is an MVC site with SEO routing. If I submit a new sitemap with say only the 2000 or so pages that we want indexed, even though navigating to the diluting pages still works, will Google re-index the site with only those 2000 pages, dropping the superfluous ones? For example, I want to keep roughly 2000 of the following: www.mysite.com/some-search-term-1/some-good-keywords www.mysite.com/some-search-term-2/some-more-good-keywords And remove several thousand of the following that have already been indexed. www.mysite.com/some-search-term-xx/some-poor-keywords www.mysite.com/some-search-term-xx/some-poor-more-keywords These pages are not actually "removed" as navigating to these URL's still renders a page. Even though there are potentially hundreds of thousands of pages, I only want say 2000 to be re-indexed and retained. The others removed (without having to do these manually). Thanks.

  • Open and scroll through 42 GB text file in Mac OS X

    I am running Mac OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion) and I am trying to open and scroll through a 42 GB .XML file. I plan on using an XML parser to parse through it and delete parts, but first I need to know how the document is structured so I can know what parts to save. How can I open this text / XML file and scroll through it so I can get a glimpse of its structure? I tried my default text-editor, text-mate, and that couldn't open it. I tried gEdit and that shows the first 10 or so lines, but then quits after trying to load the rest. I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions!

    My uncle used to say “If a man tells you that his car squirts milk in his eye when you lift the hood, don’t bet against that. You’ll end up with milk in your eye.” My friend Allen White tells me this is taken from a play (and was said about playing cards), but I think the sentiment holds, even in database work. I mentioned the other day that you should allow the other person to talk and actively listen before you propose a solution. Well, I saw a consultant “bet against the impossible”  the other day – and it bit her. She explained to the person telling her the problem that the situation simply couldn’t exist that way, and he proceeded to show her that it did. She got silent, typed a few things, muttered a little, and then said “well, must be something else.” She just couldn’t admit she was wrong. So don’t go there. If someone explains a problem to you with their database, listen with purpose, and then explore the troubleshooting steps you know to find the problem. But keep your absolutes to yourself. In fact, I have a friend that has recently sent me one of those. He connects to a system with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) version 2008 (if I recall correctly) and it shows a certain version number of the target system in the connection tab. Then he connects to it using SSMS 2008 R2 and gets a different number. Now, as far as I know, we didn’t change the connection string information, and that’s provided by the target system, so this is impossible. But I won’t tell him that.     My main objective is to create a User Interface in order to provision(change the status: activate, deactivate, or suspend) modems. I have received a SOAP developer's guide to the specific type of modem that helps out with the specific values that I need to pass into Iridium's WSDL but I cannot figure out how to do this from a webpage I have created using HTML/CSS, and PHP? I have been told by others that I need to know the portal. I have no idea what that means. I am a beginner programmer who has learned programming for this project. Any suggestions as to how to pass my data into the provisioning API?

  • Process Improvement and the Data Professional

    Don’t be afraid of that title – I’m not talking about Six Sigma or anything super-formal here. In many organizations, there are more folks in other IT roles than in the Data Professional area. In other words, there are more developers, system administrators and so on than there are the “DBA” role. That means we often have more to do than the time we need to do it. And, oddly enough, the first thing that is sacrificed is process improvement – the little things we need to do to make the day go faster in the first place. Then we get even more behind, the work piles up and…well, you know all about that. Earlier I challenged you to find 10-30 minutes a day to study. Some folks wrote back and asked “where do I start”? Well, why not be super-efficient and combine that time with learning how to make yourself more efficient? Try out a new scripting language, learn a new tool that automates things or find out ways others have automated their systems. In general, find out what you’re doing and how, and then see if that can be improved. It’s kind of like doing a performance tuning gig on yourself! If you’re pressed for time, look for bite-sized articles (like the ones I’ve done here for PowerShell and SQL Server) that you can follow in a “serial” fashion.   • Update to SQL Server Configuration Scripting Utility

    Last spring I released a utility to script SQL Server configuration information on CodePlex.  I’ve been making small changes in this application as my needs have changed.  The application is a .NET 2.0 console application.  This utility serves two needs for me.  First it helps with disaster recovery.  All server level objects (logins, jobs, linked servers, audits) are scripted to a single file per object type.  This enables the scripts to be easily run against a DR server.  If these are checked into source control you can view the history of the script and find out what changed and when. The second goal is to capture what changed inside a database.  Objects inside a database (tables, stored procedures, views, etc.) are each scripted to their own file.  This makes it easier to track the changes to an object over time.  This does include permissions and role membership so you can capture security changes.  My assumption is that a database backup is the primary method of disaster recovery for databases so this utility is designed to capture changes to objects.  You can find the full list of changes from the original on the Downloads page on CodePlex.

    Much data is unstructured, such as text documents, images, and videos. This unstructured data is often stored outside the database, separate from its structured data. This separation can cause data management complexities. Or, if the data is associated with structured storage, the file streaming capabilities and performance can be limited. FILESTREAM integrates the SQL Server Database Engine with an NTFS file system by storing varbinary(max) binary large object (BLOB) data as files on the file system. Transact-SQL statements can insert, update, query, search, and back up FILESTREAM data. Win32 file system interfaces provide streaming access to the data. FILESTREAM uses the NT system cache for caching file data. This helps reduce any effect that FILESTREAM data might have on Database Engine performance. The SQL Server buffer pool is not used; therefore, this memory is available for query processing. FILESTREAM data is not encrypted even when transparent data encryption is enabled. There are 2 basic requirements: For the two VOD types, we have to provide the pause and play functionality. For IPTV, pause and play is not required, However, channel switching time is critically important here. The user should get the program behaviour as close to TV experience as possible. This means channel switching should be fast. To provide this, buffering of video is required for multiple channels. Now the questions is, is this possible? If yes, how? Secondly, what skill set (e.g. action script 3.0 , flash 10) should the flash programmer have to be able to design this? Thirdly is it as simple as making a normal FLV player? Or is it a more complex job?

  • Splitting a sitemap by content type

    I currently am tasked with submitting our website sitemap to the search engines every week. We have a module which does offer sitemap generation but we find using it does not work very well as not all pages are included and it does not split the sitemap by content. I've used various (online and offline) tools to generate the sitemaps which is not the problem. The problem is that after every generation (which takes most of each Monday) I have to manually go through the sitemap and categorise the links in to products, pages, categories and sub categories. I've experimented successfully with XSL to split the sitemap but it is still a labour intensive process. Does anyone know of a good method to split the sitemap? Currently there are around 20,000 links (iirc) in total.

  • What is a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)?

    A Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)  can also be called a traditional database that uses a Structured Query Language (SQL) to provide access to stored data while insuring the integrity of the data.   • Unattended installation for windows 7 x86

    Are there any pre-created Autounattend.xml files for Windows 7 unattended installation x86? I have been experimenting and creating the XML file but I am always being prompted to choose which hard disk to format. I can't seem to add in the script to automate that process. I tried adding the DiskConfiguration portion but the installation keeps giving me error that my diskID is incorrect. How do I resolve this issue? Is there any pre-created Autounattend.xml file that automates everything? I want it to work for VMware virtual machine. Currently, VMware creates its own default disk. So RT Seven Lite only works for normal computer and not VMware.

  • SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB &ndash; How to get started

    As many of you aware, SQL Server can be a bit of a pig when it comes to system resources on your development machine. As part of the 2012 products Microsoft has added SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB which is a happy medium for myself when thinking about having to install a full blown SQL Server on my box. This however does not work in all cases for all development but if you are doing web or local client development then it should suffice. On the other hand, if you are working with technologies like SharePoint or trying to run Team Foundation Server on your local box then you will be out of luck while using LocalDB. To start of with, the localDB setup is delivered and packaged with Visual Studio 2012 RC. If you want to get the stand-alone installer you can download it here in either the 32 or 64 bit flavors. Once you get it installed you can start using it right away in either Visual Studio 2010 or the new Visual Studio 2012 RC. To get started you can open the SQL Server object explorer in Visual Studio by clicking   the menu option View –> SQL Server Object Explorer. This will bring up to the navigation pane where you can add a SQL Server. Once you add the SQL Server you will be prompted with the “Connect to Server” dialog to enter the server for which you can use “(localdb)\v11.0”. Click connect and you should be connected to your localDB where you can create and manage databases from Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2012 or SSMS. Once you have started creating databases here you can use the database projects in Visual Studio with these database as well as use the (localdb)\v11.0 server name inside your connections string information for your development environment. Hope this helps someone get started with SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB! It provides a great balance for developing against SQL Server 2012.

    My game has a collection of cards (about 64) that are unlocked (one by one) provided that 4 items are collected/gained in the game. Right now the deck of cards is modeled with a plist file, like this: <plist> <dict> <key>card1</key> <dict> <key>available</key> <true/> <key>series</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>model</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>color</key> <integer>1</integer> </dict> <key>card2</key> <dict> <key>available</key> <false/> <key>series</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>model</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>color</key> <integer>2</integer> </dict> The value for the key named "available" marks if the item is locked or not. Right now I have to include the data for the items collected by the user, but including that inside the plist looks like too much hassle. What kind of structure should be more suitable for this? How do you manage a collection of unlockable items like this?

  • jQuery .find() doesn't return data in IE but does in Firefox and Chrome

    I helped a friend out by doing a little web work for him. Part of what he needed was an easy way to change a couple pieces of text on his site. Rather than having him edit the HTML I decided to provide an XML file with the messages in it and I used jQuery to pull them out of the file and insert them into the page. It works great... In Firefox and Chrome, not so great in IE7. I was hoping one of you could tell me why. I did a fair but of googling but couldn't find what I'm looking for. Based on the message box with [object Object] I'm assumed that .find was working in IE but since I can't index into the array with [0] or check it's Length I'm guessing that means .find isn't returning any results. Any reason why that would work perfectly in Firefox and Chrome but fail in IE? I'm a total newbie with jQuery so I hope I haven't just done something stupid. That code above was scraped out of a forum and modified to suit my needs. Since jQuery is cross-platform I figured I wouldn't have to deal with this mess. Edit: I've found that if I load the page in Visual Studio 2008 and run it then it will work in IE. So it turns out it always works when run through the development web server. Now I'm thinking IE just doesn't like doing .find in XML loaded off of my local drive so maybe when this is on an actual web server it will work OK. I have confirmed that it works fine when browsed from a web server. Must be a peculiarity with IE. I'm guessing it's because the web server sets the mime type for the xml data file transfer and without that IE doesn't parse the xml correctly.

    I have a linq-to-sql class. I have a property "Password" for which I want to call the underlying ASP.NET Membership provider. Thus, I do not want this property written out directly but via my own code. I basically want to create a facade/proxy for this property such that I may use the underlying membership provider or a custom stored procedure. I want to accomplish without modifying the LINQ-TO-SQL designer generated code, if at all possible.

  • After writing SQL statements in MySQL, how to measure the speed / performance of them?

    I saw something from an "execution plan" article: 10 rows fetched in 0.0003s (0.7344s) How come there are 2 durations shown? What if I don't have large data set yet. For example, if I have only 20, 50, or even just 100 records, I can't really measure how faster 2 different SQL statements compare in term of speed in real life situation? In other words, there needs to be at least hundreds of thousands of records, or even a million records to accurately compares the performance of 2 different SQL statements?

QuestionNumber is defined as integer unique key, auto increment Now, when i make a bulk copy to insert the DataTable into the SQL Server, the database overwrites my QuestionNumber from the DataTable and generates new ones (starting from 1 increment 1). How do i have to change my database setup, that the original QuestionNumbers are copied into the database?
