• How to instantly termainate an un-supervised script on demand?

  I have a GUI which resembles an interpreter. It allows the user to write a script in Jython (implementation of Python in Java) and run it whenever he wants. Apart from that, I also wish to allow the user to instantly terminate the run whenever he wants. Thing is, I don't really know how to do it. The script is being run on a different Thread, but I don't know of any secure way to stop/interrupt/terminate a thread in the middle of its run, let alone not knowing what is being run by the thread/script (it could be a simple task or maybe some sort of a heavy SQL query against a DB, and a DB is something which requires careful resource handling). How can I instantly terminate such run on demand?

• Is it possible to install IDLE on Python 2.5 and Ubuntu

  Ubuntu Software Center offers versions of IDLE numbered 2.6 and upwards. If I have to use Python 2.5 (because of Google App Engine compatibility), will it be possible to still use IDLE? I am of course assuming that the there is some necessity for the IDLE version number to be the same as the Python version number. Presently, my invocations of IDLE fail because of _tkinter not being found. Likewise it is not found when I try to do an import _tkinter interactively. I then proceeded to install Tcl and Tk and python-tk and one of the IDLE versions being offered (none were labelled 2.5) but _tkinter still does not get imported.

• How do I protect static files with ASP.NET form auhentication on IIS 7.5?

  Hi all I have a website running on a IIS 7.5 server with ASP.NET 4.0 on a shared host, but in full trust. The site is a basic "file browser" that allows the visitors to login and have a list of files available to them displayed, and, obviously, download the files. The static files (mostly pdf files) are located in a sub folder on the site called data, e.g. http://example.com/data/... The site uses ASP.NET form authentication. My question is: How do I get the ASP.NET engine to handle the requests for the static files in the data folder, so that request for files are authenticated by ASP.NET, and users are not able to deep link to a file and grab files they are not allowed to have? • Mobile Specific Site Development. Where to start?

  I'm beginning the process of learning the ins and outs of developing sites for mobile web browsers. Are there any good resources/communities online that discuss mobile specific site development issues? My initial understanding is that to cover different phones you need to build one site that is enabled for browsers with the webkit engine (iphone, android, etc.) and another more basic site for other older browsers, is this assumption correct? Also what does developing for webkit mean exactly? How is it different than just using javascript/css/html? Is it the same except that you limit yourself to webkit specific functions and css? I looked on the webkit site, but it didn't explain it in those terms. Are there any other snafus I need to watch out for when developing for mobile browsers?

I want to create a stored procedure that will select all the elements in a table for a given run_id and delete all of them except for the 'newest' 5 entries (as noted by the stop_time column). • Java Spring 3.0 MVC Annotation vs COC. Whats the preferred method in the Java community?

  I am using Spring's MVC framework for an application I'm hosting on Google's App Engine. So far, my controllers are registered via the @Controller annotation; however, prior to getting into Spring, I evaluated ASP.net MVC 2 which requires no configuration and is based on convention. Is convention over configuration (COC) the current and preferred method in the Java community to implement MVC with Spring. Also, this may be a result of my limited knowledge so far but i noticed that i could only instantiate my Controllers the required constuctor injection if i use the COC method via the ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping. For instance the following controller bean config will fail if i use the defaultannotationhandlermapping. <bean id="c" class="com.domain.TestController"> <constructor-arg ref="service" /> </bean> <bean id="service" class="com.domain.Service" /> My com.domain.TestController controller works fine if i use ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping/COC but it results in an error when i use defaultannotationhandlermapping/Annotations.

• Are there any modern platforms with non-IEEE C/C++ float formats?

  Hi all, I am writing a video game, Humm and Strumm, which requires a network component in its game engine. I can deal with differences in endianness easily, but I have hit a wall in attempting to deal with possible float memory formats. I know that modern computers have all a standard integer format, but I have heard that they may not all use the IEEE standard for floating-point integers. Is this true? While certainly I could just output it as a character string into each packet, I would still have to convert to a "well-known format" of each client, regardless of the platform. The standard printf() and atod() would be inadequate. Please note, because this game is a Free/Open Source Software program that will run on GNU/Linux, *BSD, and Microsoft Windows, I cannot use any proprietary solutions, nor any single-platform solutions. • Redirect in combination with a rewrite condition in htaccess

  Hi all! I've got a cms-driven website, with no option to change the code. What I want to accomplish is creating friendly url's, using only apaches mod-rewrite engine. The problem is I'm creating an infinite loop, because I first redirect the original url (index.php?id=21) to a friendly one (/friendly/) and then rewrite the '/friendly' part back to 'id=21' I know there should be an extra condition or parameter to avoid looping in this case, but I can´t get one of the possible solutions to work. I am using SQL Server 2008 and I wasn’t sure if I could use the PIVOT function to accomplish this.   Hi all, Is this statement true: com.sun.xml.internal package is an internal package as the name suggestes. Users should not write code that depends on internal JDK implementation classes. Such classes are internal implementation details of the JDK and subject to change without notice One of my colleagues used one of the classes in his code, which caused javac task in Ant fail to compile our project as the compiler couldn't find the class. Answer from Sun/Oracle says that this is expected behavior of the compiler as user shouldn't use the package. Question is why the classes in the package made public in the first place? Thanks, Sarah

• Why does Tomcat 6 hang when I shut it down?

  I have Tomcat 6.0.24 64 bit installed on two Windows Server 2008 boxes as a Window's service. I use the Tomcat Monitor application to start and stop Tomcat. Randomly on both boxes, the server will not shutdown when the Stop Service option is selected. Both Start Service and Stop Service remain grayed out until I open a task manager and kill tomcat6.exe. This also happens with Tomcat 6.0.20 installed on these boxes, however it does not happen on my 32 bit Windows 7 machine. What is causing this?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. There are two tables like "FIRST_KIND_OF_USERS" and "SECOND_KIND_OF_USERS". Both are mapped to the default aspnet_users table via UserId column. Each of them has it's own integer primary key column like "FirstKindOfUsersId". When a user is trying to add some data to the database, for instance, "Create a new Task" I would like to add a new row in Tasks table with "FirstKindOfUsersId" value. Where should I store or get this value? At the moment I have these possible solutions: Get "FirstKindOfUsersId" value by User.Identity.Name each time; Use SESSION[] for storing these values (Where and when should I save these ones?) Use FormsAuthenticationTicket and create own custom IIdentity class. (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1064271/asp-net-mvc-set-custom-iidentity-or-iprincipal) Which approach is better? And if I pick the 3rd one, how to save the necessary data property and at which stage?

The information about the device names is in a drop down box dynamically added from the database. I want the user to be able to select two separate devices and view the devices information plotted onto a graph. • Do you use Scimore SQL database ?

  There's a database engine that looks amazing for a free tool and that is Scimore. Have you had much experience with it? If so, how does it rate..particularly against Firebird? How resilient/self reliant is it? (Meaning how much downtime/maintenance is expected?) The scale out capabilities also look very interesting. I just downloaded it and have been playing around and so far it looks good. I had been looking for an easy to deploy single-user type embedded database (which Scimore has an option) and was toying with MS SQL Compact Edition and SQLite and remembered this database from a trial a few years ago. (Windows platform) I was about ready to settle in on SQLite but started thinking about other projects which are multi-user and wanted to stick with a single solution...which is why I started looking at Firebird as well.

• GUI system architecture?

  I'm designing GUI (graphical user interface) system for a game engine (C++). Idea is to create a heirarchy of GUI controllers like Focusable, Hoverable, Dragable etc. Every GUI component can attach multiple controllers, they modify component's behaviour. I think it gives flexible system and protects from code duplication. Different instances of the same GUI class can have different complex behaviours (may be, even change it dynamically), so this approach looks practical. The other choice is to add focused, hovered, dragged etc. flags in the base GUI component class. It looks like overhead and not that flexible. Another solution is to use Decorator pattern and wrap objects with FocusDecorator, HoverDecorator etc. Maintaining such system looks a bit harder. Question: What are pitfalls in my solution? May be you have seen a better approaches in GUI systems? What are the best ways of implementing such flexible complex system?

Essentially, I would like to truncate a string such that it its length is not longer than a given value. I am writing to a database table and want to ensure that the values I write meet the constraint of the column's datatype. For instance, it would be nice if I could write the following: string NormalizeLength(string value, int maxLength) { return value.Substring(0, maxLength); } Unfortunately, this raises an exception because maxLength exceeds the string boundaries. Of course, I could write a function like the following, but I was hoping that something like this already exists. string NormalizeLength(string value, int maxLength) { return value.Length <= maxLength ? value : value.Substring(0, maxLength); } Where is the elusive API that performs this task? Is there one?

  Does anyone use Accurev for Source Control Management? We are switching (eventually) from StarTeam to Accurev. My initial impression is that the GUI tool is severely lacking, however the underlying engine, and the branches as streams concept is incredible. The biggest difficulty we are facing is assessing our own DIY tools that interfaced with starteam, and either replacing them with DIY new tools, or finding and purchasing appropriate replacements. Additionally, is anyone using the AccuWork component for Issue management? Starteam had a very nice change request system, and AccuWork does not come close to matching it. We are evaluating either using Accuwork, or buying a 3rd party package such as JIRA. Opinions?

• Find model records by ID in the order the array of IDs were given

  I have a query to get the IDs of people in a particular order, say: ids = [1, 3, 5, 9, 6, 2] I then want to fetch those people by Person.find(ids) But they are always fetched in numerical order, I know this by performing: people = Person.find(ids).map(&:id) => [1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9] How can I run this query so that the order is the same as the order of the ids array? I made this task more difficult as I wanted to only perform the query to fetch people once, from the IDs given. So, performing multiple queries is out of the question. I tried something like: ids.each do |i| person = people.where('id = ?', i) But I don't think this works.

• WiX, how to prevent files from uninstalling though we forgot to set Permanent="yes"

  We have a product installer created with Wix, containing a program package ("V1") and some configuration files. Now, we are going to make a major upgrade with a new product code, where the old version of the product is uninstalled and "V2" is installed. What we want is to save one of the configuration files from uninstalling, since it is needed for the V2, too. Unfortunately, we forgot to set the Permanent="yes" option when we delivered V1 (read this question for more information). Here comes the question: is there an easy way of preventing the uninstall of the file anyhow? Of course, we could add a custom action to the script to backup the file before uninstallation, and another custom action to restore it afterwards, but IMHO that seems to be overkill for this task, and might interfere with other parts of the MSI registration process.

  Hi, In an application harvesting (many) RSS feeds, I want to dynamically schedule the feed downloaders based on the following criteria: The speed at which content are generated - source which produce content at a higher rate need to be visited more often. After downloading a feed, its content is analyzed and based on the current rate of publication the next run time is determined for the feed. Note that this is dynamically changing. Sometimes a feed is very active and sometimes it is slow. Every RSS feed should be visited at least once an hour. While the second one is done by most schedulers but the first one is more problematic. What JAVA-based open source scheduler would you recommend for the task? (and why ;) ) Thanks! Boaz
