• Apache 2.2 / Win7 - slow or not responsive

  My configuration - Windows 7 x64, Php 5.3, Apache 2.2.15, latest Mysql. When loading pages from localhost, the response time shown by firebug is more 530ms for the main 'index.php' file, sometimes the connection is reset. It's painfully slow. I googled the problem and found a workaround - switch off and on again a win service called BFE - base filtering engine. Then everything works like a lightning but xdebug doesn't work in netbeans. Why is this response time so long? Can you think of any other solution than BFE toggling? joey33

• Next and Previous MySQL row based on name

  Hi everyone, I have a table with details on personnel. I would like to create a Next/Previous link based on the individual's last name. Since personnel were not added in alphabetical order, selecting the next or previous row based on its ID does not work. It is a hefty table - the pertinent fields are id, name_l, and name_f. I would like to order by name_l, the individuals' last name. How would I go about accomplishing this task? Thanks!

• InnoDB or MyISAM - Why not both?

  Hey. I'm new to databases, and I've read various threads about which is better between InnoDB and MyISAM. It seems that the debates are to use or the other. Is it not possible to use both, depending on the table? What would be the disadvantages in doing this? As far as I can tell, the engine can be set during the CREATE TABLE command. Therefore, certain tables which are often read can be set to MyISAM, but tables that need transaction support can use InnoDB. I'm sure there must be a problem, otherwise this would be the ultimate answer :).

• How can I load a sql "dump" file into sql alchemy

  I have a large sql dump file ... with multiple CREATE TABLE and INSERT INTO statements. Is there any way to load these all into a SQLAlchemy sqlite database at once. I plan to use the introspected ORM from sqlsoup after I've created the tables. However, when I use the engine.execute() method it complains: sqlite3.Warning: You can only execute one statement at a time. Is there a way to work around this issue. Perhaps splitting the file with a regexp or some kind of parser, but I don't know enough SQL to get all of the cases for the regexp. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Will EDIT: Since this seems important ... The dump file was created with a MySQL database and so it has quite a few commands/syntax that sqlite3 does not understand correctly.

• QT: QPainter + GDI in the same widget?

  I'm trying to use the method described here to use a QPainter and GDI calls on the same widget. Unfortunately this tutorial seem to have been written on an earlier version of QT and now it does not work. I set the WA_PaintOnScreen flag and reimplement paintEngine() to return NULL. Then on the paintEvent() I create a QPainter, use it and then use some GDI calls to paint a bitmap. The GDI calls work fine but the QPainter does nothing. I get the following error on the console: QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 1 Is this simply not supported anymore? how can I do it? I've also tried creating an additional widget on top of the GDI-painting widget but that didn't go well as well since the top widget appears black and blocks the GDI widget.

• Problem with an application on USB, a tricky one

  I have this application on USB built in VS 2008, on win7 , the USb has two partitions one hidden and other normal one, when i run the application on normal part , it has to swap the part to hidden and run the applications present in hidden part. When i run the application in normal part from USB , the memory swaps but the applications in hidden part are not run. but i can see the application running in Task manager. when i copy the application and run it from the desktop, the application works seamlessly, without any glitch. I guess some thing is holding the application process when run from USB, i cannot safe eject the USB too. CAn some one give me a clue as to what can be done to resolve. Also the application works well on Windows 7 as expected. The problem is on XP

• book with good examples for each implementation?

  i've read about design patterns and it seems that there are a lot of different design patterns to use. i wonder if there are some books that acts like a reference. "you want to build a framework, then consider this, this and this pattern". also giving some examples. then jumps to another implementation eg. search engine and gives some patterns and concrete examples to use. in this way you learn about the weakness and strength about each pattern and where they will fit, instead of just reading about every design pattern decoupled from each other. are there good "reference sheets" or other tutorials good for a beginner at this? thanks

  I have a product setup executable that copies some files to the user's hard drive. It's not a typical installer in the normal sense (it doesn't add anything to the Start Menu or Program Files folders). Each time the setup program is run on Vista, after the exe terminates, Vista produces a task dialog: This program might not have installed correctly Reinstall using recommended settings This program installed correctly Is there a function I need to call from the exe or registry entry to set, to indicate to the operating system that the program installed correctly (or to at least supress this message)? • Is it bad practice to have a long initialization method?

  many people have argued about function size. They say that functions in general should be pretty short. Opinions vary from something like 15 lines to "about one screen", which today is probably about 40-80 lines. Also, functions should always fulfill one task only. However, there is one kind of function that frequently fails in both criteria in my code: initialization functions. For example in an audio application, the audio hardware/API has to be set up, audio data has to be converted to a suitable format and the object state has to properly initialized. These are clearly three different tasks and depending on the API this can easily span more than 50 lines. The thing with init-functions is that they are generally only called once, so there is no need to re-use any of the components. Would you still break them up into several smaller functions would you consider big initialization functions to be ok?

  Hi, I've just started to use Sharepoint 2007, MOSS is installed but for the extranet I'm working on the publishing isn't switched on. What I need to do is customise the global navigation so that it displays all top level & subsite links, custom links and format it nicely with css for the brand. Sounds easy but it isn't for some reason! I've been reading numerous blogs and things about it but can't seem to find anything other than writing lots of code (which I don't mind) to hook into the API or use a customer provider which sounds extreme for something so simple. I was wondering what are the options for this and any good links to articles appreciated so I can finally get this simeple task done. I see the MOSS navigation has extra options for global navigation but I presume as this isn't enabled I couldn't use the same code/control in the master page? Thanks Dan

• How does one advance in programming?

  I really have the felling as if I'm stuck in my own craft. I've been developing and learning for a while now and keep having the feeling that I should advance more, or even be more knowledgeable. I've started projects I didn't finish because I thought I lacked the knowledge and the skill to make that feature work just right, or to make that code magically appear on my screen. I've read books I didn't finish, thinking I wasn't advanced enough for the subjects they covered. I've been around long enough to know that everything comes with experience, hard work and dedication. Having said this, I just want to be able to work without getting stuck on a particular problem that involves my cluelessness of a language or a tool feature. My question to you would be, how does one advance in programming? What are the secrets (if any) to advance to the point of fluency in a particular language or a task. Thank you!

• Java Spring 3.0 MVC Annotation vs COC. Whats the prefered method in the Java community?

  I am using Spring's MVC framework for an application I'm hosting on Google's App Engine. So far, my controllers are registered via the @Controller annotation; however, prior to getting into Spring, I evaluated ASP.net MVC 2 which requires no configuration and is based on convention. Is convention over configuration (COC) the current and preferred method in the Java community to implement MVC with Spring. Also, this may be a result of my limited knowledge so far but i noticed that i could only instantiate my Controllers the required constuctor injection if i use the COC method via the ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping. For instance the following controller bean config will fail if i use the defaultannotationhandlermapping. My com.domain.TestController controller works fine if i use ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping/COC but it results in an error when i use defaultannotationhandlermapping/Annotations.

• How to get notification of workflow errors?

  I am having issues were a workflow is stalled because there is an issue with sending an email (send email activity). Typically, this is simply solved by resuming the workflow. I'm wondering if there any way to react to a workflow error, so the user knows they need to go in and resume the workflow. I'm also wondering about this relative to a workflow that is attempting to assign a task to a user who no longer exists in the CRM or one that has an invalid email address, which I'm assuming would cause errors in workflows as well. Any other suggestions related to this sort if issue would be welcome. Thanks!

• Data not displayed first time in android after copying the file from assets to data folder

  One of my colleagues joined our company, which by the way is a internet company, months ago as an on-line marketing specialist. He majored English in his college and has never deeply touched IT before. He says that to be a good on-line marketing specialist he needs to lean some basic IT skills in order to deliver superb work. According to him, things like Search Engine Optimization, monitoring competitors' web sites, design some functionality on web site and so on require IT entree-level knowledge. And he asks me what kind knowledge is helpful for him to do his job. I am stunted by his question. It is easy enough to answer, things like HTML, CSS, even Photo-shop are required in some job descriptions. Also, I believe some basic understanding of dynamic web site, static web site is helpful to him. On the other hand, as a techie I still feel my answer is awkward. What is your opinion on this? So every time we handle some UI event and we understand that this will take some time we also understand that this will hang UI thread and our application. And then we make all this Background work things and handle callbacks or whatever. So my question is: Is there in some language/platform a mechanism that will automatically run time-consuming tasks in the background and will do all related work itself? So we just write the code for handling specific UI event and this code will be somehow detected as time-consuming and will be executed in background. And if there isn't, then why?

My only problem is that when I launch activities, they are relaunched as they were new activities ( for instance, I am writing an email, i press home and go into my activity,launch email, and then the app launch the email bout goes back at the inbox and the email is lost) So that's not true multitasking. • Newbie Question: Read and Process a List of Text Files

  I'm completely new to .NET and am trying as a first step to write a text processing program. The task is simple: I have a list of 10,000 text files stored in one folder, and I'm trying to read each one, store it as a string variable, then run it through a series of functions, then save the final output to another folder. So far I can only manage to manually input the file path like this (in VB.NET): Dim tRead As System.IO.StreamReader Public Function ReadFile() As String Dim EntireFile As String tRead = File.OpenText("c:\textexample\00001.txt") EntireFile = tRead.ReadToEnd Return EntireFile End Function Public Function Step1() ..... Perhaps for example store all input file path into a text file then read each entry at a time, then save the final output into the save path, again listed in a text file. • Pro's and Con's of unit testing after the fact.

  I have a largish complex app around 27k lines. Its essentially a rule drive multithreaded processing engine, without giving too much away Its been partially tested as it's been built, certain components. Question I have, is what is the pro's and con's of doing unit testing on after the fact, so to speak, after its been implemented. It is clear that traditional testing is going to take 2-3+ months to test every facet, and it all needs to work, and that time is not available really. I've done a fair bit of unit testing in the past, but generally it's been on desktop automation or LOB apps, which are fairly simple. The app is itself is highly componentized internally, interface driven really. I've not decided on what particular framework to use. Any advice would be appreciated. What say you.

  I am trying to come up with the most efficient database as possible. My bus routes all have about 10 stops. The bus starts at number one until it reaches the 10th stop, then it comes back again. This cycle happens 3 times a day. I am really stuck as to how I can efficiently generate the times for the buses and where I should store the stops. If I put all the stops in one field and the times in another, the database won't be very dynamic. If I store all the stops one by one in a column and then the times in another column, there will be a lot of repeating happening further down as one stop has multiple times. Maybe I am missing something, I've only just started learning SQL and this is a task we have been set. Thanks in advance.

  I am developing site for online advertisements where sellers and buyers can come and sell/buy advertisements. Just need to develop detailed statistics like click counts, from which page clicks are coming (one advertisement can be placed on many pages), from which position (top, right, left ...) click are coming (one advertisement can be placed in different position on single page) etc. I seen that most of the advertisement on popular websites has following format: http://ads.stackoverflow.com/a.aspx?Task=Click&ZoneID=3&CampaignID=838&AdvertiserID=50&BannerID=1335&SiteID=1&RandomNumber=1463177307&Keywords=c%23%2c.net%2ccollections%2cdictionary%2chashtable It has many parameters like ZoneID, CampaignID, AdvertiserID, BannerID, SiteID, RandomNumber, adid, adcrid, obid, obtid and way. I can use one advertisement (adid) in multiple pages. But can't figure out the way to distinguish between from which pages clicks are coming. How can I use such parameters to generate statistics which tell me the page from which clicks are coming?
