• Ubuntu 12.04 resolution stuck on 640x480

  I am new to Ubuntu and I was trying to get my HDMI enabled TV to work with my Ubuntu 12.04 computer and I installed a Nvidia driver using the "additional drivers" program. After that didn't work, I started playing around with the dual booted windows 7 on my computer. Now, I've never used that windows since I installed it so I was stripped down to bare minimum so I tried to adjust the resolution(as it was on lowest resolution) and tried to connect the HDMI, which didn't work. After that I came back to my Ubuntu installation only to find out that it is now stuck on 640x480 resolution. I tried to remove the driver that I installed again using the "additional drivers" program but that didn't help at all. The error that showed up was - Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors none of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes: Trying modes for CRTC 63 CRTC 63: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 0) CRTC 63: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 1) Trying modes for CRTC 64 CRTC 64: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 0) CRTC 64: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 1) Any help would be appreciated as this is very annoying.   I'm configuring a brand new HPC server and am interested in using SmartOS because of it's virtualization control and zfs features. Does this configuration make sense for a SmartOS HPC, or would you recommend an alternative? System Specs: 2x 8-core xeon 384 GB RAM 30 TB HDs with 2x512GB SSDs Uses: - zfs for serving data to different vms, and over the network; 1 SSD for L2ARC and 1 for ZIL - typically 1-2 ubuntu instances running R and custom C/C++ code My biggest concerns as a newbie to SmartOS and ZFS are: (1) will I get near-metal performance from ubuntu running on SmartOS if it is the only active vm? (2) how do I serve data from the global zfs pool to the containers and other network devices?

• What to do when 'dpkg --configure -a' fails with too many errors?

  During an upgrade from lucid (10.04) to precise (12.04), the X session froze, and I have been trying to recover the upgrade to get a stable system. I have performed the following steps: Used ssh to log in to the stalled system over the network. Checked the contents of the /var/log/dist-upgrade directory. There was no activity on main.log, apt.log or term.log. top showed that process 'precise' was using about 3% CPU, but I could find no evidence that the upgrade process was still doing anything. 'dpkg' did not show up in top, but it came up with pgrep dpkg | xargs ps Killed the 'dpkg' and 'precise' processes Tried to recover the upgrade by running sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a. This was partially successful (some packages were configured), but failed with the message Processing was halted because there were too many errors. I ran the same command a few times, and each time some packages were configured but others failed. Tried running sudo apt-get -f install. It fails with similar errors to dpkg. The current situation is that dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get -f install fails with two kinds of error: Dependency issues, e.g.: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of cifs-utils: cifs-utils depends on samba-common; however: Package samba-common is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing cifs-utils (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Resource conflict, e.g.: debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process: Resource temporarily unavailable Additionally, it seems there's reference to potential boot problems, so I'm not keen to reboot without fixing the install first: dpkg: too many errors, stopping Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ... update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-25-generic cryptsetup: WARNING: failed to detect canonical device of /dev/sda1 cryptsetup: WARNING: could not determine root device from /etc/fstab So my question is, how to get a working install when dpkg --configure -a fails?

From other websites, I've found out how to set and remove them, using both xxx-WebConfiguration and xxx-WebConfigurationProperty.   I want to use HideMyAss VPN (hidemyass.com) on Ubuntu Linux to route only HTTP (ports 80 & 443) traffic to the HideMyAss VPN server, and leave all the other traffic (MySQL, SSH, etc.) alone. I'm running Ubuntu on AWS EC2 instances. The problem is that when I try and run the default HMA script, I suddenly can't SSH into the Ubuntu instance anymore and have to reboot it from the AWS console. I suspect the Ubuntu instance will also have trouble connecting to the RDS MySQL database, but haven't confirmed it. • Is there a good way to wrap an existing Python based web application to require a login?

  I'm in the process of installing an open-source Python based web application to an internal server here at work. The existing code is open - it doesn't require a login to view it - but one of the requirements is that users have to be approved before they can see anything. Is there a good way (using Apache configuration files for example, but any method would be great) to wrap the application so that any access requires a login? I would like to avoid modifying the open-source code (a maintenance nightmare every time a new release comes out). Any thoughts or suggestions?

What is /class/input/input7 and where is it? Do i have to install additional drivers?

• Setting up Mac VPN on simple network with separate IPs

  Hi there, We have a pretty simple network configuration. A typical ASDL line with two extra IP addresses. We have a basic home network router Dlink DIR-655. We have two Mac OS X Snow Leopard Servers that we want to setup VPN on. The problem is that we can't change the ports which VPN works under ie. we can only setup port forwarding for UDP 500,1701,4500 to a single server. I'm wondering how we can cost effectively re-work our network so that we can take advantage of the separate IP addresses and have both VPNs working with the same router. Is that possible with our current hardware setup or do we need something more powerful? We're also toying with Mobile Access and wondering if that might be easier to setup. Expert help is greatly appreciated.

  I wonder if it is possible to use a configuration for that command "set listchars=tab:¦¦,trail:·" to "see" 4 spaces as tabs and get the effect of the picture below (using real tabs)... I use the setting "set expandtab" to Vim use spaces in place of tabs. I really need to use spaces instead of tabs, but I would keep the functionality above. There is some form of do this? Here's how Vim behaves when I use "set expandtab"... ... I wish he recognized one tab for every 4 spaces like above! • Ubuntu karmic 9.10 Live image on USB - not working.

  This is my configuration 4GB pendrive, HP ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386 image file for live USB install pendrivelinux (u910p) and ubetbootin (unetbootin.sourceforge.net) machine T61 Earlier I have installed ubuntu live image using above two mentioned utilities, numerous times. But, on a 2gb kingston flash-drive. Today, i am trying to install the live-image on 4gb HP flash-drive. Both the utilities install, i can see the files in the drive, even the wubi-installer is working, it say press "reboot" to boot in live-ubuntu. But, when i press "reboot" it does not reboot my win7. Now, when i reboot, select boot-usb in bios, it say "no boot record". I am making my usb bootable, using the utility, even then nothing is working out. Did this a few times. Is 4GB usb a prob, does anyone knows how to partition my usb in 2-2gb and install it on one partition, and then use the live image. Is it possible.

• Quickbooks Error - Can't turn off auto updates

  My company uses quickbooks pro 2002 and unfortunately they won't upgrade at this time, the program keeps freezing and giving methe error: This action cannot be completed because this program is busy.. Then asks to switch or retry, I tracked it down to being an issue with IE since it's an old program and can't use the new versions of IE (the program uses IE for it's interface for some STUPID reason). Everyone says to disable auto updates but the problem is that I can't get to the options area to disable the updates (the options area uses IE!!!) so I'm screwed, I have to sit there and click retry 40-50 times several times a day and it's driving me nutz. I've been looking online for days but have not found a solution to this predicament. Is there a way to disable auto updates through the configuration files? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  After upgrade to Trusty (14.04) from Saucy (13.10), all apt operations are very slow. Even those that do not include downloading anything, or connecting to any servers. For example, displaying the apt policy # time apt-cache policy [...] real 0m8.951s user 0m5.069s sys 0m3.861s takes almost ten seconds! Mostly a weird lag right after issuing the command. And it's the same even if I issue the same command again. On another system it doesn't take a tenth of a second real 0m0.096s user 0m0.070s sys 0m0.023s The other system is a little beefier but there was no noticeable difference before the upgrade. It's the same with apt-get, anything apt-related. How do I find out the source of this lag and fix it?   Please pardon the newbie question, but I can't seem to figure this out. I followed the Voxilla's tut to the tee: http://voxilla.com/2009/10/15/voxill...p-by-step-1457 But in making calls, my softphones connect, yet no audio (in either direction). I know from poking around the forums that this is generally caused by two factors: NAT and audio codecs. I (being new to the arena), however, don't know which. I believe I have Asterisk and the clients restricted to just ulaw, and I also believe I have the correct ports open, and my externip set correctly (I think the Voxilla AMI does this automatically, since it's in the cloud). I'm a bit lost. I'd be happy to post whatever configuration files that might help, provided you tell me where they are on the filesystem. But like I said before, this is effectively a vanilla install of Voxilla's own FreePBX AMI. I'd appreciate any help or guidance here. Thanks!

• Can I use only a HDMI monitor?

  I recently found out there are such things as PC monitors with TV capabilities (or TVs that can be PC monitors), and the idea kind of tickles my fancy. I'm thinking of getting one of these gadgets, and if I do, I will connect it to my PC via HDMI (my graphics card has builtin HDMI), so that I also get sound to the TV. The reason for this is because I have a 2.1 sound system which I want to use both on the PC and the TV. Basically, I want the configuration to look like this: Cable --------> TV --> 2.1 Sound System PC --HDMI--> TV --> 2.1 Sound System My question is: can I use a setup like this? Can I not have a classic VGA monitor? Will I be able to see non-graphical interfaces (such as the BIOS, GRUB, a Linux terminal, ...) through HDMI on the TV? I use Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

• Apache on Windows random long wait times

  I have a development machine with Apache installed as a service on Windows. The installation is fresh out of the box, with no changes to configuration aside from adding the PHP module. From day one, I've had a problem that looks like this: Essentially, Apache is freezing for about 11 seconds before replying on random requests. This appears to happen more frequently when the host hasn't been connected to in a while, but this is not always the case. I've eliminated MySQL, PHP, and the specific application; this long wait problem will occur even when loading a static file such as favicon.ico. Thus, the only factor remaining is Apache, which is freezing for consistently around 10-11 seconds before replying. The problem is not the DNS problem that many people point to; as you can see, the DNS lookup is instant, and the problem occurs both on localhost and 127.0.0.1. Thanks for the time.

Some storage devices require specific firmware versions or settings to function properly with failover clusters. • Hard Drive upgrade advice for a Dell PowerEdge 1950

  My setup is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with 2x 140Gb Hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. The OS is Windows 2003 Web Edition and disk is partitioned into to two, a 12Gb C: partition and the remainder is the D: drive. Both are very close to full capacity. Ideally I want to replace those drives with 2x 1Tb drives while retaining all data. First of all is this possible without rebuilding the server? If so, will I need any 3rd party software, Symantec Ghost, Partition Master for e.g., to do this? Any general advice as to how to go about doing this?

• Restrict Administrators from changing system time - Windows XP machines (no domain)

  I need to write a script that will remove all users under Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > User Rights Assignment > Change the system time from the local group policy (gpedit.msc) on all Windows XP machines. These machines are not on the domain. I DO have a way to distribute and run the script automatically. Can someone point me in the right direction for creating a script like this?

• Django fails to find static files served by nginx

  I know this is a really noobish question but I can't find any solution despite finding the problem trivial. I have a django application deployed with gunicorn. The static files are served by the nginx server with the following url : myserver.com/static/admin/css/base.css. However, my django application keep looking for the static files at myserver.com:8001/static/admin/css/base.css and is obviously failing (404). I don't know how to fix this. Is it a django or an nginx problem ? • Software architecture for two similar classes which require different input parameters for the same method

  I am writing code to simulate a supply chain. The supply chain can be simulated in either an intermediate stocking or a cross-docking configuration. So, I wrote two simulator objects IstockSimulator and XdockSimulator. Since the two objects share certain behaviors (e.g. making shipments, demand arriving), I wrote an abstract simulator object AbstractSimulator which is a parent class of the two simulator objects. The abstract simulator object has a method runSimulation() which takes an input parameter of class SimulationParameters. Up till now, the simulation parameters only contains fields that are common to both simulator objects, such as randomSeed, simulationStartPeriod and simulationEndPeriod. However, I now want to include fields that are specific to the type of simulation that is being run, i.e. an IstockSimulationParameters class for an intermediate stocking simulation, and a XdockSimulationParameters class for a cross-docking simulation. My current idea is take the method runSimulation() out of the AbstractSimulator class, but to put a runSimulation(IstockSimulationParameters) method in the IstockSimulator class, and a runSimulation(XdockSimulationParameters) method in the IstockSimulator class. I am worried however, that this approach will lead to code duplication. What should I do?
