• effective retrieve for a voting system in PHP

    - by Adnan
Hello, I have a system where registered users can vote up/vote down comment for a picture. Something very similar to SO's voting system. I store the votes in a table with values as such; vote_id | vote_comment_id | vote_user_id | vote_date Now I have few a question concerned the speed and efficiency for the following; PROB: Once a user opens the picture page with comments I need, if that user has already voted UP/DOWN a comment to show it like; "you voted up" or "you voted down" next to the comment (in SO it the vote image is highlighted) MY POSSIBLE SOL: Right now when I open a picture page for each comment I loop thru, I loop thru my table of votes as well and check if a user has voted and show the status (I compare the vote_user_id with the user's session). How efficient is this? Anyone have a better approach to tackle this kind of problem?

  • php: showing my country based on my IP, mysql optimized

    - by andufo
I'm downloaded WIPmania's worldip table from http://www.wipmania.com/en/base/ -- the table has 3 fields and around 79k rows: startip // example: 3363110912 endip // example: 3363112063 country // example: AR (Argentina) So, lets suppose i'm in Argentina and my IP address is: 200.117.248.17 1) I use this function to convert my ip to long function ip_address_to_number($ip) { if(!$ip) { return false; } else { $ip = split('\.',$ip); return($ip[0]*16777216 + $ip[1]*65536 + $ip[2]*256 + $ip[3]); } } 2) I search for the proper country code by matching the long converted ip: $sql = 'SELECT * FROM worldip WHERE '.ip_address_to_number($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']).' BETWEEN startip AND endip'; which is equivalent to: SELECT country FROM worldip WHERE 3363174417 BETWEEN startip AND endip (benchmark: Showing rows 0 - 0 (1 total, Query took 0.2109 sec)) Now comes the real question. What if another bunch of argentinian guys also open the website and they all have these ip addresses: 200.117.248.17 200.117.233.10 200.117.241.88 200.117.159.24 Since i'm caching all the sql queries; instead of matching EACH of the ip queries in the database, would it be better (and right) just to match the 2 first sections of the ip by modifying the function like this? function ip_address_to_number($ip) { if(!$ip) { return false; } else { $ip = split('\.',$ip); return($ip[0]*16777216 + $ip[1]*65536); } } (notice that the 3rd and 4th splitted values of the IP have been removed). That way instead of querying these 4 values: 3363174417 3363170570 3363172696 3363151640 ...all i have to query is: 3363110912 (which is 200.117.0.0 converted to long). Is this right? any other ideas to optimize this process? Thanks!

  • Google Code Jam 2010 Large DataSets Take Too Long to Submit

    - by Travis
Hey Guys, I'm participating in the 2010 code jam and I solved two of the problems for the small data sets, but I'm not even close to solving the large data sets in the 8 minute time frame. I'm wondering if anyone out there has solved the large data set: What hardware were you running on? What language were you running on? What performance tuning techniques did you do on your code to run as fast as possible? I'm writing the solutions in Ruby, which is not my day to day language, and executing them on my Macbook Pro. My solutions for problem A and problem C are on github at http://github.com/tjboudreaux/codejam2010. I'd appreciate any suggestions that you may have. FWIW, I have alot of experience in C++ from college, my primary language is PHP, and my "sandbox" language is Ruby. Was I just a bit ambitious by taking a shot at this in Ruby, not knowing where the language struggles for performance, or does anyone see anything that's a redflag as to why I can't complete the large dataset in time to submit.

  • PHP PDO SQL Server Select statement not replacing question marks

    - by Metropolis
Awhile ago I wrote a database class which uses PDO in order to connect to SQL Server databases and also to MySQL databases. It has always replaced the question marks fine when using it on the MySQL databases, but for the SQL Server database I had to create a work around which basically replaces the question marks manually. Here is the code for that. if($this->getPDODriver() == 'odbc' && !empty($values_a) && substr_count($query_s, "?") > 0) { $query_s = preg_replace(array_fill(0, substr_count($query_s, "?"), '/\?/'), $values_a, $query_s, 1); $values_a = NULL; } Now, I understand that this completely defeats the purpose of the question marks and PDO, but it has been working fine for me. What I would like to do now though, is find out why the question marks are not getting replaced in the first place, and remove this workaround. If I have a select statement like the following SELECT * FROM database WHERE value = ? That is what the query looks like when I go to prepare it, but when I display the query results, it is a blank array. Just remember, this class is working fine with MySQL, and it is working fine with the work around above. So I know it has something to do with the question marks.

  • php resize image

    - by haohan
    I have a class to read and output the image content, if $width is set, it will resize the image, and then output it. If I call the function like this $image-readImage('123.jpg'); , it can output the image file correctly, but when I call $image-readImage('123.jpg'); , it just display a black image with resized width & height. And I tried to replace the code from @imagejpeg($thumb, null, 100); to @imagejpeg($image, null, 100); will works~ - protected function readImage($fileName, $width = 0) { if ($width <= 0) { return @file_get_contents($this-destination . '/' . $fileName); } else { $imageSize = @getimagesize($this-destination . '/' . $fileName); $actualWidth = $imageSize[0]; $actualHeigth = $imageSize[1]; if ($actualWidth <= $width) { return @file_get_contents($this-destination . '/' . $fileName); } $height = (100 / ($actualWidth / $width)) * .01; $height = @round($actualHeigth * $height); $image = @imagecreatefromjpeg($this-destination . '/' . $fileName); $thumb = @imagecreatetruecolor($width, $height); @imagecopyresampled($thumb, $image, 0, 0, 0, 0, $width, $height, $actualWidth, $actualHeight); ob_start(); @imagejpeg($thumb, null, 100); $bits = ob_get_contents(); ob_end_clean(); return $bits; } } Any experts know what happened and help me to solve it ? Thanks.

  • PHP: BBCode with SQL selection?

    - by rayne
I would like to code a bbcode with SQL selection. Basically I want the user to be able to input [user]Anotheruser[/user] in a text field, which then is converted in the front-end to an URL that looks like this: http://mydomain.com/user/[userid]/anotheruser. So in order to get the userid, I'd need to include an SQL selection, and additionally an if else to find out of the other user actually exists. Can I do this with a preg_replace as usually used for creating bbcode, or do I need to do something more complex?

  • File version maintainence via PHP FTP?

    - by Michael
Currently I'm working on a "plugin" that will be installed on many different sites and I was wondering on the best way for me to maintain the file version of this "plugin". Here's what I was thinking. Have a "master copy" of the plugin on a server, then connect via FTP to the target sites and upload the copy to their site overwriting whatever files they may have. I was wondering the best way to go about this. The "plugin" will have many different folders and files so transferring one file at a time will be too tedious. Is there a way to copy an entire folder over at a time? Or even better, is there a way to recurse through the folders and checking for file difference before uploading the new file? This is to make sure we are uploading a new file and not just the same one.

  • PHP - CURL vs fopen vs fsocketopen ?

    - by TatMing
I would write a WordPress plugin to parse all image source and check it's broken link or not. My idea is : Select all post&page's images by regex from MySQL Navigate the image url and get the response header (404 ,403 error etc) print a report Since i don't need actual to download the binary file, so in performance ,compare in CURL , fopen , fsocketopen Which one is worst to use? And one more question, which method can execute in multi-thread?

  • PCRE/PHP regex not matching last "item"

    - by superbarney
Here's a regex that I've cobbled up: /(.*={76}\s)?\s*(.*?)\s\-\-\s(\d{2}\/\d{2}\-\d{2}\s\d{2}:\d{2})\s\s(.*?)\s(http:\/\/service.*?)\s(\-{76})/is and here's the text I will be parsing: http://p.linode.com/7015 and here's the replacement for the matched text:
\n\t
$2
\n\t
\n\t
$4
\n\t
\n
\n\n I have almost come up with a regex needed to parse a block of text into RSS 2.0 XML markup. I've tested it with RegExr and RegexBuddy and it works perfectly except for the last "item" where there is no line breaks after the link (Line 269). In short, the problem is the "iProperty" article in the text is not matched. Any regex gurus willing to help me troubleshoot what's wrong? I've tried /(.*={76}\s)?\s*(.*?)\s\-\-\s(\d{2}\/\d{2}\-\d{2}\s\d{2}:\d{2})\s\s(.*?)\s(http:\/\/service.*?)\s*(\-{76})/is Here's the output that I get: http://p.linode.com/7016 but that didn't work as I expected (i.e. a newline would be optional). Thanks!

  • PHP Doctrine: Filter Table?

    - by ropstah
    I'm still not convinced after my previous question and some experience. Requirements: I don't want to use an SQL query everytime a filterBy() function is called and still be able to call -filterBy() on the returned table. Please find the comment @ ObjectsTable class: "How to instantiate another table and add records which match the filter criteria?" Usage: $globaltable = new ObjectsTable(); //globally accessible variable $globaltable->findAll(); //this call is made once at the beginning of the request $globaltable->filterBy('somefield', $someValue); //this function is used all over the place ObjectsTable class: class ObjectsTable extends Doctrine_Table { function filterBy($field, $value) { //How to instantiate another table and add records which match the criteria? } }

  • PHP Variable with Array

    - by Crays
Hi guys, i'm trying to make a "update user's power" page. It is something similar to those you can find in say, invisionfree forums. I need it to generate a list of members with checkbox [done] Add an option for it [done] What i don't know how to do is to update, to say, give all the selected users the selected power. Then i went searching for something and found most of them uses array to do this, but i never found one that actually explains how it works. The example i took (with my own modification) was this: while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { echo '
'.$id[]=$rows['id'].''; echo '

'; echo '
'.$row['uname'].'
'; echo '
'; } I'm not sure what exactly $id[]=$rows['id'] does I know after the row, my option[] would become an array of option[1], option[2], option[3] for what power should be given, i've got no problem with that but on how to update the database i'm got no clue... for($i=0;$i<$count;$i++){ $sql1="UPDATE ninos SET power='$power' WHERE id='$option[$i]'"; $result1=mysql_query($sql1); } So Say i have 5 users, Aye, Bee, Cee, Dee, Eee with IDs of 1,2,3,4,5 how can i make it so that my script would run like $sql1="UPDATE ninos SET power = '$power' Where id='1','2','3','4','5'"; Please help, thanks.

  • PHP array manipulation

    - by user295189
    I have the code below . it looks for the case and creates an array of rows and columns. $pv->results[$row1][1][0] actually is $pv->result->[rownumber][coulmnnumber][0]. Now this is for only 2 columns as you can see. However I want an array like $myArr = array(0=>1, 1=>7, 2=>8, 3=>9 ) to be added below for column. What it is doing, is adding 4 columns (0,1,2,3) into the code below. So now I will have 4 cases instead of 2 cases as I need to more columns. Also the case value will not be 1 and 2, it will be 1, 7, 8 and 9 respectively. How can I do that? Thanks. for($i=0;$i<count($pv->rawData); $i++){ SWITCH ($pv->rawData[$i]->my ID){ CASE '1': $row1++; $pv->results[$row1][1][0] = $pv->rawData[$i]->data; break; CASE '2': $row2++; $pv->results[$row2][2][0] = $pv->rawData[$i]->data; break; }

  • help, php calendar links

    - by Ray
Below is a partial table row that will create a line row of 3 columns. Two columns in each side is links, left is previous year and right is next year links. Center is links for january thru december. When you click a month links, the calendar will show that month you've clicked in the current year the calendar is on. For example, the calendar will open current month and year by default...March 2010. If you clicked previous year (2009), it will display current month (March) of last year (2009)...and then if you click Jun, the calendar will display June of whatever the year the calendar is currently on, which is June of 2009. my question is, what can i do to following code to do such thing. $Calendar.= "

"."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=" . $LastYear["year"] ."\"> $LastY
\n"; $Calendar.= "
"."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[0] ."\">Jan. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[1] ."\">Feb. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[2] ."\">Mar. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[3] ."\">Apr. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[4] ."\">May | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[5] ."\">Jun. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[6] ."\">Jul. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[7] ."\">Aug. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[8] ."\">Sep. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[9] ."\">Oct. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[10] ."\">Nov. | "."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=".$ThisYear["year"]."&month=" . $MonthArray[11] ."\">Dec.
"; $Calendar.= "
"."<a "."href=\"".$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]."?year=" . $NextYear["year"] ."\"> $NextY
\n"; Thanks in advance.

  • Mysql IN clause, php array

    - by robert knobulous
I know that this has been asked and answered before, but for the life of me I cannot find where I am going wrong. My code is below. $backa = array("1", "7", "8", "9", "12"); $backaa = implode(",", $backa); /* code to create connection object $wkHook */ $getOpt=$wkHook->prepare("select movementId, movementName from Movement where movementId IN ($backaa) order by movementName asc"); $getOpt->execute(); $getOpt->store_result($id, $name); Every time I run this I get one of two errors depending upon how I use the $backaa variable. More often than not I get a call to a non-object error indicating that $getOpt is not a proper Mysql query. I have tried every fashion of quoting, bracketing, etc for the $backaa variable but it's just not working for me. What obvious thing am I missing?
