• 2D non-tile based map editor

  I am currently developing a relatively simple 2D, topdown oriented adventure game for the iPhone and was wondering what would be the easiest way to create the maps for my game. I figured I would need some kind of visual editor that would give me immediate feedback and would allow me to place all objects in the world exactly where I want them. I could then load the saved representation of the world I create in the editor in my game. So, I am looking for a simple map editor that allows me to do this. All the objects in my game are simply textured rectangles build up from two triangles. All I need to be able to do is position different rectangles/objects in the map, and give them a texture. I am using texture atlases, so it would be useful to be able to assign portions of textures to the objects. I then need to be able to extract all the objects from the saved representation of my maps, together with the name/identifier of the texture(atlas) they use, and the area of the texture atlas. I have looked at some tile-based map editors like Tiled and Ogmo, but they don't seem to be able to do what I want. Any suggestions? EDIT: a more concrete example: something like the GameMaker level editor, but then with added export functionality in a handy format.

• C#.NET (AForge) against Java (JavaCV, JMF) for video processing

  I'm starting to get really confused looking deeper and deeper at video processing world and searching for optimal choices. This is the reason to post this and some other questions to try and navigate myself in the best possible way. I really like Java, working with Java, coding with Java, at the same time C# is not that different from Java and Visual Studio is maybe the best IDE I've been working with. So even though I really want to do my projects in Java so I can get better and better Java programmer at the same time I'm really attract to video processing and even though I'm still at the beginning of this journey I want to take the right path. So I'm really in doubt could Java be used in a production environment for serious video processing software. As the title says I already have been looking at maybe the two most used technologies for video processing in Java - JMF and JavaCV and I'm starting to think that even they are used and they provide some functionality, when it comes to real work and real project that's not the first thing that comes to once mind, I mean to someone that have a professional opinion about this. On the other hand I haven't got the time to investigate .NET (c# specificly) options but even AForge looks a lot more serious library then those provided for Java. So in general -either ways I'm gonna spend a lot of time learning some technology and trying to do something that make sense with it, but my plan is at the end the thing that I'll eventually come up to be my headline project. To represent my skills and eventually help me find a job in the field. So I really don't want to spend time learning something that will give me the programming result I want but at the same time is not something that is needed in the real world development. So what is your opinion, which language, technology is better for this specific issue. Which one worths more in terms that I specified above?

• Fog shader camera problem

  I have some difficulties with my vertex-fragment fog shader in Unity. I have a good visual result but the problem is that the gradient is based on the camera's position, it moves as the camera moves. I don't know how to fix it. • What is the correct UI interface to learn for creating Windows phone 8 apps? [closed]

  I am a veteran Delphi 6 programmer transitioning to C# development. My first project is a open source library that will have a minimal user interface since it is meant to be used as a Component primarily on desktop PCs running Visual Studio. My next project is going to be a Windows 8 phone app and I intend for that platform to be my primary focus for future C# development, not the desktop. My concern is that I waste as little time as possible learning a presentation framework that will benefit or distract me from writing Windows 8 phone apps. The plethora of framework names I have already encountered include, WinForms, WPF (Windows Presentation Framework), Silverlight, Silverlight Mobile, Metro and there may be others. Given my goal outlined in the first paragraph above, I have a few questions: 1) Which of the frameworks should I use for the small amount of UI work I will do with the desktop Component project that will help me the most, or hurt me the least, when I move to Windows 8 phone app development? 2) Which is the correct framework to study for developing Windows 8 phone apps? 3) Any awesome tutorials, resources or books you have run into targeted towards veteran programmers from other platforms?   Later this week, I will be heading to our annual South Florida .Net Code Camp, an all-day free “Geek Fest” taking place on February 12th, 2011.This year’s code camp will be conveniently taking place at Nova Southeastern University in Ft Lauderdale.   With more than 700 already registered, this year’s event is bound to exceed last year’s registration and attendance.   I have helped firms evaluate software demos and delivered demos in diverse industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, life sciences, and travel (to name just a few). Here are a few suggestions. First, which vendor has the best fit for your industry? Make sure that the vendor demo staff tell you clearly throughout the demo (not just in a passing comment), what portion of each business process and screen is standard, what has been configured, what has been custom coded, and what has been provided by a partner. If you don't keep asking, what you buy may be less useful than what you saw. This will lead to added (and unbudgeted) costs and time. Second, what are the roles of the primary users? What are their top-most needs, such as exception-oriented dashboards or rapid data entry? Can you get a demo for each key role, showing how the software fits a typical workday? Have the vendor repeatedly tell you what is standard, configured, custom coded, or provided by a partner. Third, how well does the demo balance ease of use with completeness of business processes? One common approach is to hide needed fields or steps that are of low visual value.   I am currently developing a relatively simple 2D, topdown oriented adventure game for the iPhone and was wondering what would be the easiest way to create the maps for my game. I figured I would need some kind of visual editor that would give me immediate feedback and would allow me to place all objects in the world exactly where I want them. I could then load the saved representation of the world I create in the editor in my game. So, I am looking for a simple map editor that allows me to do this. All the objects in my game are simply textured rectangles build up from two triangles. All I need to be able to do is position different rectangles/objects in the map, and give them a texture. I am using texture atlases, so it would be useful to be able to assign portions of textures to the objects. I then need to be able to extract all the objects from the saved representation of my maps, together with the name/identifier of the texture(atlas) they use, and the area of the texture atlas. I have looked at some tile-based map editors like Tiled and Ogmo, but they don't seem to be able to do what I want. Any suggestions? EDIT: a more concrete example: something like the GameMaker level editor, but then with added export functionality in a handy format.

To resolve it I tried google read lots of but then find the following article MSIEXEC - The power user's install steps to solve the error: 1. Execute the following command from command prompt: msiexec /i program_name.msi /lv logfile.log where program_name.msi is the new version /lv is log Verbose output   2. open up the logfile.log in the editor 3. find the GUID in it I found it like the following Product Code from property table before transforms: '{GUID}' 4. Above mentioned article suggest  to search it in the registry but to find the uninstall command. Try if you like to see it in the registry. you need to search twice to to get there there you I tried the following command as it mentioned in the above mentioned article but it didn’t work for me. so I keep digging until I got Windows 7 and Windows Installer Error “Another installation is in progress” It mentioned the use of msizap.exe 5.   by combining the commands from both the articles I able to uninstall the service successfully execute the following command from the visual studio command prompt if you already have installed or get it from Microsoft website http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa370523%28VS.85%29.aspx   msizap.exe TWP {GUID} it did the trick and removed the installed service successfully

• What are the pros and cons about developing under MAC OS? [closed]

  Sometimes i get the chance to program under MAC OS, i knew about this OS since Apple shipped its computers with a PowerPC by Motorola ( since Panther, more or less ), these days they are all X86 and i see no particular advantages about adopting this platform, also i see only downsides for the main part, i do not want to cause flames, please reply if you have a good answer or you can contribute in some constructive way. I'm trying to write a list of the natively supported languages, or the languages that comes only under MAC OS with some particular technology, my list is this: Objective C with Cocoa/Carbon I'm not considering personal preferences here, if a person X likes to code under Xcode it's probably ok to have a MAC, if a person Y likes to code under Visual Studio it's probably ok to not having a MAC, my purpose is to clarify what MAC OS is good for. I also do not get why people glorify the MAC for historical reasons, I mean a language like Java just comes for MAC only in the 7th edition of its JDK, things like GCC are just a porting and many technologies are out of the question like C# ( I'm sorry, i do not consider MonoDevelop like a serious alternative ) , .Net, ASP, DirectX, and many others are just, again, porting or free software, like PHP, MySQL, Javascript, XML, CSS, OpenGL, etc etc. My question is: what is so special about being a programmer under MAC OS? There is something that I have not seen? I also noticed that a significant portion of MAC users end up using their MAC like a normal Windows PC with Parallels or something like that. I can afford to buy a MAC, show me why this machine is so unique.

• Links to C++ AMP and other content

  A few links you may be interested in. This week was a big week for Microsoft with the unveiling of the developer story for Windows 8 Metro-style apps. The recorded sessions are available on channel9. Note that you can use C++ AMP in both Metro and desktop apps, and in fact even on Windows 7. Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview is now available. To download it, here is a link to a link plus context. As I previously shared, I was also speaking at BUILD on C++ AMP, and here is a direct link to that recording. Kate Gregory has started a book on C++ AMP and she has graciously shared the first 1-2 draft chapters for free online – get the link from her blog post which is also where you can leave her feedback. • ASP.NET MVC Application In Action - I (DailyJournal)

  Its been long due I was planning to write an article on creating some useful ASP.NET MVC application. I have code named it "DailyJournal". Its a simple application which allows creation of multiple activities and assign tasks to these activities. Its' kind of "Yet another Task/Todo application". The credentials which you can use with the attached demo application is shown below.   Collapse Copy Code User Name : admin Password : admin123 Framework/Libraries Used ASP.NET MVC jQuery + jQuery UI (for ajax and UI) ELMAH for Error logging Warning Ahead This is just a rough draft and so I am putting down some of the known limitation. Some points of warning before we move further with this application. This is just an early prototype. As such many of the design principles have been ignored. But, I try to cover that up in the next update once I get my head around this. The application in its current state supports the following features Create users Assign Activities to users Assign tasks to activities Assign a status to a task The user creation/authentication is being done by the default Membership provider. Most of the activities are highly visual i.e. you can drag-drop task to different areas, in-place edition of task details and so on.   The following are the current issues with the design which I promise to refactor in the second version. No Validations Fat Controller XSS/CSS vulnerable No Service model/abstraction yet. For the demo LINQ to SQL is implemented. No separation of layers UI Design et el... • Windows CE and the Compact Framework are dead?

  This is one of the question that I’ve been asked more and more frequently at my public speeches and each time I meet customers. The announcement of the new Windows Phone 7 platform and the release of Visual Studio 2010 generated a bit of confusion around Windows CE and some of the technologies it supports. Windows CE is still alive and a lot of good programmers are working on the new releases (I had a chance to know some of them during the MVP summit in February). Here’s a blog post from Olivier Bloch that describes the situation and provides some good news about the OS: http://blogs.msdn.com/obloch/archive/2010/05/03/windows-ce-is-not-dead.aspx As you can read here, Windows Phone 7 keeps its “roots” inside Windows CE. Regarding the .NET Compact Framework, this article from the excellent “I know the answer (it’s 42)” blog from Abhinaba (it seems that we share a passion for photography, Douglas Adams and embedded development), explains that the .NET CF is the foundation of XNA and Silverlight implementation on the WP7 platform: http://blogs.msdn.com/abhinaba/archive/2010/03/18/what-is-netcf.aspx So Windows CE is here to stay, powering one of the most interesting smart phone platforms and ready to power also your devices. • Execute a SSIS package in Sync or Async mode from SQL Server 2012

  Today I had to schedule a package stored in the shiny new SSIS Catalog store that can be enabled with SQL Server 2012. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh479588(v=SQL.110).aspx) Once your packages are stored here, they will be executed using the new stored procedures created for this purpose. This is the script that will get executed if you try to execute your packages right from management studio or through a SQL Server Agent job, will be similar to the following: Declare @execution_id bigint EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name='my_package.dtsx', @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=N'BI', @project_name=N'DWH', @use32bitruntime=False, @reference_id=Null Select @execution_id DECLARE @var0 smallint = 1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'LOGGING_LEVEL', @parameter_value=@var0 DECLARE @var1 bit = 0 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'DUMP_ON_ERROR', @parameter_value=@var1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[start_execution] @execution_id GO The problem here is that the procedure will simply start the execution of the package and will return as soon as the package as been started…thus giving you the opportunity to execute packages asynchrously from your T-SQL code. This is just *great*, but what happens if I what to execute a package and WAIT for it to finish (and thus having a synchronous execution of it)? You have to be sure that you add the “SYNCHRONIZED” parameter to the package execution. Before the start_execution procedure: exec [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'SYNCHRONIZED', @parameter_value=1 And that’s it . PS From the RC0, the SYNCHRONIZED parameter is automatically added each time you schedule a package execution through the SQL Server Agent. If you’re using an external scheduler, just keep this post in mind .
