  This allows your Windows Azure compute applications running in our cloud to use the existing NTFS APIs to store their data in a durable drive. The drive is backed by a Windows Azure Page Blob formatted as a single NTFS volume VHD.   The Page Blob can be mounted as a drive within the Windows Azure cloud, where all non-buffered/flushed NTFS writes are made durable to the drive (Page Blob).   If the application using the drive crashes, the data is kept persistent via the Page Blob, and can be remounted when the application instance is restarted or remounted elsewhere for a different application instance to use.   Since the drive is an NTFS formatted Page Blob, you can also use the standard blob interfaces to uploaded and download your NTFS VHDs to the cloud. • How do I port my Ubuntu from my Desktop to Laptop

  Hi, I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my desktop box. I have got a new laptop and I will be using it from now on. But I will have to do the setup all over again (setting up applications/updates). Plus many of my preferences and tweaks I've had in my desktop will be lost and those too I will have to all over again. Is there an easy way where I can just take image or something and use it in my laptop?? Any help/pointers/links are much appreciated.

• Where to find algorithms work?

  The funnest parts of my projects have been the back-end algorithms work. I have worked on projects where I implemented Gaussian Mixture models, a Remez algorithm and a few Monte Carlo schemes. I loved figuring out how these processes worked and tuning them when they didn't. I recently graduated and my problem lies in the work I was able to find. The only jobs I have found, with my Electrical Engineering degree, are for writing user applications. Tasks such as fashioning web interfaces or front-ends for hardware devices. When I speak with potential employers about my interests they say they have no work of the sort. Where does one find work that involves implementing these kind of schemes?

• How to completely remove wicd from 12.04?

  I had issues with WiFi so I removed Network Manager. I booted Windows OS (dual booting Windows 7 and 12.04) to download wicd 1.7.2.4. Extracted it and installed. However, wcid worked properly with Wired Connection but could not connect to WiFi. So, I re-installed Network Manager which works properly now, and wicd connects to WiFi too. As soon as I disconnect from Network Manager, wicd connects only to wired. At this point, I wanted to remove wicd but apt-get returns no wicd installed, can't see it in Synaptic or Software Center, but only in Applications list under Dash home. Of course wcid icon shows connections, and resulting connected, so my system shows both applets for wicd and network manager in the top panel. When running dpkg commands, wicd is not listed as installed package. Any suggestion how to remove wicd? Consider that I started with Ubuntu just few months ago so my knowledge base is limited.

• Is there a point to writing in C or C++ instead of C# without knowing specifically what would make a program faster?

  I wrote a small library in Python for handling the xbox 360's STFS files to be used on my web applications. I would like to rewrite it for use in the many desktop programs people are writing for 360 game modding, but I'm not quite if I should continue using C# or delve into C++ or even C. STFS is an in-file file system used by the xbox 360 and the job of the library would be extracting/injecting files, which could take noticeable amounts of time to do. What I know in C# comes from internet tutorials and resources, as would anything I learn about C++, so what I'm asking is if it's better to bring myself to a slightly lower-level language without knowing beforehand the features of the language that increase performance, or continue assuming that compiler optimizations and that my lack of experience will mean that the language I choose won't matter.

  I am developing an application with different behavior depending on the arguments : - "-config" starts a Gtk window to change options, start and close the daemon. - "-daemon" starts a background process that does something every X minutes. I already know how to use fork/system/exec etc... But I would like to know the main logic of such application to : - restart or refresh the daemon when configuration change. - keep only one instance of the daemon. I have red that killing the daemon to restart it is not a clean way to do. How other applications do ? (ubuntuone, weather forecast, rss feed working with notification area) Thanks for your help. PS : I don't want to create a system-wide daemon, just a user application with a background process.

• What norms/API for monitoring my servers?

  I have a dozen server applications installed on my customers intranets (they can send http requests over the internet but cannot be called from outside). They're written in various technologies, mainly java and Go. I want them to regularly push information about their state towards a central server which is visible on internet. Some of this information is generic (is it ON ?), some is specific (size of a cache in an application for example). The main goal is to be able to make a small web page on which I could instantly check the state of every servers. And maybe later add some kind of notification in case of problem. Obviously I can do this by writing a few dozen lines of code each side (or a little more if I put this data in a database) but in order to ease future evolution, it could be interesting to use some existing norms or libraries. So, what are the current opensource free and light solutions to do this, preferably with no central configuration when I add a server ? I'd prefer a norm over a library.

• MEF to the rescue in Task-it

  One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. As a matter of fact, Microsoft announced at MIX this week that its new Silverlight Analytics Framework would use MEF for composition. • cannot boot Ubuntu after removing packages?

  I have problem now with booting into Ubuntu because I removed some packages from package manager and its dependencies by mistake. After I saw desktop removing applications one by one and the theme starting to disappear. After I tried to restart the login, I tried to fix it usinh recovery mode but it's not working. I am sure there are important packages removed, the problem is that I have no backup for my files .. Also, I need my firefox stored passwords. , I tried to boot to Ubuntu live CD but files encrypted in home folder and no access to it !! is there away to access it ?

• Creating a SOLID Visual Studio Solution

  The SOLID acronym describes five object-oriented design principles that, when followed, produce code that is cleaner and more maintainable. The last principle, the Dependency Inversion Principle, suggests that details depend upon abstractions. • Problem installing LibreOffice; please help!

  I followed the instructions for installing LibreOffice found here, which are basically the same instructions found all over askubuntu and the web in general. I followed the instructions (including removing OO first) for gnome; all that is in my Applications menu now is LibreOffice (OO used to have OpenOffice Spreadsheet, OpenOffice Presentation, etc.) When I open LibreOffice, I get the splash screen/menu, but all of the choices for creating new docs are greyed out. It also will not open any office/type files (no errors; they just don't open.) The terminal commands indicated that installation was successful, but obviously something is missing. I'm guessing I can just reinstall OO from the software center, but I'd really like to give LibreOffice a try, given the lack of ongoing development on OO. Can anyone help me out?

Also these were created with nib file (xib) no storyboard. Can I create my files with storyboard or do I have to continue creating files with xib? • Game Patching Mac/PC

  Just wondering what types of solutions are available to handle patching of PC/Mac games that don't have any sort of auto updater built into them. In windows do you just spin off some sort of new install shield for the game that includes the updated files, hope you can read a valid registry key to point to the right directory, and overwrite files? If so how does that translate over to Mac where the game is normally just distributed as straight up .app file? Is there a better approach than the above for an already released product? (Assuming direct sells, and not through a marketplace that features auto-updating like Steam.) Are there any off the shelf auto-updater type libraries that could also be easily integrated with a C/C++ code base even after a game has been shipped to make this a lot simpler, and that are cross platform? Also how do auto-updaters work with new OS's that want applications and files digitally signed?
