• Router to WIFI Client to Router (New solution for distance when repeater doesnt help)

  Ethernet to TL-WR340G with WIFI enabled Using TL-WA500 tried repeater mode which was not good enough and had password problems (could not connect if using either ASCII or Normal password in one way then in repeater worked other way) and also could not forward (repeat) WPA/WPA2 security. So since this repeater can also be as client, I made it as client and used another router (TL-WR740N) to get from wire connection from that client and all was working for a little bit. Every machine is set up to be auto DHCP. 1st when setting up client mode I found it working after doing reset. Then after some tens of minutes internet stopped working. When I removed WiFi client then all went back to normal. Where is the problem and how to make this work? • Windows 7 Professional doesn't mount my usb flash drive anymore

  I have a Kingston flash drive which works fine in every computer that I insert it. But in my Windows 7 it doesn't mount anymore. Why this is happening ? When I insert the flash drive it seems that the Windows 7 recognize it, but when I hover the icon don't show the flash drive to remove it, as usually does. Any idea ? Thanks. Any idea ? • Custom prompt doesn't work on Mac's terminal

  I like to use a custom prompt (current path in blue) on my unix machine: export PS1='\[\e[0;34m\]\w \$\[\e[m\] ' But when I try to use it on Mac's terminal it doesn't work: it fails to detect the end of the prompt and overwrites the prompt when I type commands. This also happens when I'm inputting a long command where it wraps over the same line instead of starting a new line. I don't understand why this is the case since I use bash on both machines. Any suggestions on how to remedy this?

• ajaxterm: cannot type some characters (j, b, u for sure)

  I googled and came up empty. Anyone have experience with ajaxterm? Given my login name is "jae", just as on this site, this inability to enter "j" kills ajaxterm for my purposes. It looked so good. Damn. EDIT: Dammit, it was just Firemacs with its idiotic keybindings. Removed all the ones which are really "emacsy", and all's fine now. And the disappearing window was due to me changing the rows/columns, which requires a restart (of a daemon that doesn't show up in pstree, weird).

  As long as I can remember, the preferred print driver has been PCL5 or PCL6. It seems that PCL5 is going the way of the dodo, and PCL6 has more problems than I care to list here (pcl xl errors). It seems that the most reliable print driver these days is the PS (postscript) driver. Just wondering what everyone elses' experience has been and what kind of driver they prefer?

• Where did this incorrect cached DNS lookup come from?

  Somehow, I've been having a chronic issue where my computer will get an invalid DNS lookup in its cache for either of the two Exchange servers I use from Mail.app. My workplace runs one of the Exchange servers and I run the other (they are totally unrelated, hosted by different companies, etc.). The problem manifests as a certificate domain error. When it happens, I can run nslookup mail.mydomain.com and I see the incorrect IP address (usually owned by either Apple or Akamai), but if I run nslookup mail.mydomain.com 8.8.8.8, I get the correct address. My real quest is to find out why this keeps happening, and to do that, I'd like to know which server is supplying me this bad DNS entry. Is there a way to check my DNS cache to see where this bad lookup came from?

  I'm using Windows 7 on my HP ProBook 4250s. The problem I face is that my system halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds. These jerks are not letting me concentrate or work properly. This happens even when I'm just typing in notepad while no other application is running. I tried to install every driver from HP's website and there's no item in device manager marked with yellow icon. • Microsoft signed driver appears as publisher not verfied

  Task at hand: Microsoft sign drivers on Win 7. I microsoft signed my driver package 3 times every time thinking I might have missed a step or something. However, I cannot seem to get rid of the Windows Security error message "Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software'. This is not the first time I have signed the driver packages. I was successfully able to sign other driver packages a few months ago. However, with this driver package I keep getting Windows security dialog box. Here's the procedure I follow - Create a new cat file using INF2CAT tool. Self sign the driver using a Versign Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority - G5.cer. Run the microsoft tests on DTM Servers and clients with the devices that use this driver. Create WLK submission package. Self sign the cab file. Submit the package for certification. The catalog file that comes back after successfully passing tests says Name of signer "Microsoft Windows Hardware Comptibility Publisher". When I check the validity of signature using SignTool, it says the signature is vaild. However, when I try to install the driver with new signed catalog file the windows complain. Any ideas? Edit 11/12/2012: Reply to Eugene's comment Thanks for the help, Eugene. Yes. I did sign two other driver packages before. One of them was modified version of WinUSB driver. I am using the same certificate I used when I signed those two driver packages a few months ago. It costs $250 per signing from Microsoft. I would think that Microsoft would complain about it during certification if the certificate is wrong. I use the following command to self sign the CAT file. • Stop VLC player from saving effects & filter settings

  VLC Player v1.1.11 Windows 7 Ultimate VLC player launches each new video with setting I used once to brighten a dark video. On a second computer, VLC player opens all videos rotated 270 which was a feature I used once. I now have to manually uncheck Image adjust on one computer & uncheck Transform on another for each video to have it play without these custom settings. I've custom mapped VLC Hotkeys that I use extensively. As a result, I do not want to "reset preferences" and lose my Hotkey mapping. • I can't connect to my network, except in safe mode

  My laptop cannot connect to my network all of a sudden except in safe mode. When it boots, it will show the networks available in the tray popup, but if I click connect on any, it says "Unable to connect" and the troubleshooter is useless. Shortly thereafter all the networks disappear. I have tried removing IPv6 support as I have seen that cause problems. No joy. I've also tried removing the wireless network adapter in Device Manager and reinstalling it, also no joy. I've also tried attaching a USB wireless adapter, and it has the same problem. If I boot in safe mode, then it has no problems at all. Three other devices in the house connect fine, so I am pretty sure it is nothing to do with the router. Any ideas what to check next? I am running Win7 Ultimate on a 2GHz Quadcore with 8GB RAM with a Broadcom 802.11n wireless card. EDIT: RE wired connections: What is very weird is that if i plug in a wired connection, then not only does it connect via the wired connection, but the wireLESS also starts working perfectly. And a soon as I unplug the wire, then the wireLESS stops working again! So it seems the wireless is right now working only in safe-mode, or when a wired connection is also plugged in.

  I can't really show the code in Unix, but I can explain it very clearly. In the terminal, when you type "df", you get information on the disk free space all in KILOBYTE units. KILOBYTES is currently set as the default in Unix. My problem is trying to change the default from KILOBYTES to MEGABYTES. After changing of the default, I should be able to type in "df" and all the disk free space should come up in MEGABYTES.

Edit: On Win8 Aero was removed but the taskbar is transparent (the desktop background picture is slightly visible 'behind' the taskbar). When I'm using the taskbar to switch programs I don't like seeing artifacts 'bleeding-through', I find it distracting.

• VMware Fusion won't boot my Boot Camp partition

  I have a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook that I would ultimately like to convert to a VMware virtual machine image. I've installed VMware Fusion and tried to start up my Boot Camp install using the Boot Camp button on the initial welcome screen. It brings up the "VMware Fusion is preparing your Boot Camp partition to run as a virtual machine" dialog, but afterward it shows an error dialog with the following message: Boot Camp partition preprocessing failed. You may not be able to boot your Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine. It then tries to boot the new VM, but it blue screens during the boot process. The info on the blue screen doesn't provide much in the way of help though. Running chkdsk has no effect. After searching around, some people recommended using VMware's stand-alone converter utility from within Windows to create an image, but the utility said it couldn't create an image because my disk uses a GUID Partition Table (GPT). I'm wondering if this is why it can't boot my BC partition from Fusion. Has anyone else run into this and found a fix?

  I have strange situation - after some upgrade couple of days ago fonts in KDE konsole broke. To make it more specific - standard fonts look more or less ok, but when I use my national characters (like acelnsózz) they all look broken - like from another font, or badly scaled. The same problem doesn't exist in gnome-terminal. I usually use Terminus font, so I used this for demonstration, but it shows in other fonts as well - if that will be necessary I will provide list.   I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious. I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users. Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways? (I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password. Yes, you're right. But that's not what this question is about. Thanks.)

• Software mirroring (RAID1) versus "Fake Raid" for new Windows 7 install

  I've just ordered two new hard drives for my main desktop and a copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I'd like to do a clean install of Win7 onto the new drives (leaving my old XP Pro boot partition around for a while in case something goes disastrously wrong, etc.). I want to have them set up in mirrored (RAID-1) mode. My understanding is that Win7 Pro can do software mirroring, but can I set this up directly at install time? If so, how? Note that I'd like the disk to be split into three partitions (OS/Apps&Data/Bulk data), all of which should be mirrored. Would it be better (more reliable or faster) to use my motherboard's hardware RAID support? My motherboard is an older nVidia nForce 680i SLI, which is not the most stable of motherboards, and I'm not sure how trustworthy its RAID1 configuration might be (or if Win7 could even detect and install onto a hardware-mirrored volume). Also, the performance characteristics of RAID1 are rather different than RAID0 or RAID5, and I'm wondering if Win7's software mirroring might actually be faster than hardware RAID1 (for example, I'm more of a Unix admin when I have to wear the sysadmin hat, and I've had great success deploying ZFS; most hardware RAID1 implementations have to read both disks and compare results to look for data errors, but ZFS can read from only one disk in the mirror and just use the built-in checksum, meaning it can have up to 2x the number of reads in-flight, as long as there's no data corruption). Edit: Okay, my question about whether Windows 7 can do software mirroring has been answered, and it can. I'm still unsure whether Windows software RAID or my motherboard's hardware "fake RAID" function is a better choice, though. Remember, I'm only interested in mirroring -- not the more complicated striping or parity operations that generally show the poor performance of crappy motherboard RAID solutions.

  I have a Dell Optiplex 330 and have recently done a Windows XP repair. After it was finished I was able to use the computer just fine. Now I take it back to it's original location and plug in the OEM mouse and keyboard and they both work until Windows XP loads. As soon as windows loads the lights go out on both the keyboard and mouse.

• Vantec NexStar NAS Enclosures - Writing large files

  I have one of these 'Vantec NexStar LX - NST-475LX-BK' drive enclosures. It is a NAS device. When I write a file to the device using eSata, or a SMB share I cannot write files over 4GB. I think this is because the drive is formatted with FAT32. But when I access the device using FTP it doesn't matter. I can write files of any size. E.g. I wrote one on there last night which was 30GB. Does this make any sense? Why? I guess the most important thing for me is data integrity.
