• Degraded RAID5 and no md superblock on one of remaining drive

  This is actually on a QNAP TS-509 NAS. The RAID is basically a Linux RAID. The NAS was configured with RAID 5 with 5 drives (/md0 with /dev/sd[abcde]3). At some point, /dev/sde failed and drive was replaced. While rebuilding (and not completed), the NAS rebooted itself and /dev/sdc dropped out of the array. Now the array can't start because essentially 2 drives have dropped out. I disconnected /dev/sde and hoped that /md0 can resume in degraded mode, but no luck.. Further investigation shows that /dev/sdc3 has no md superblock. The data should be good since the array was unable to assemble after /dev/sdc dropped off. All the searches I done showed how to reassemble the array assuming 1 bad drive. But I think I just need to restore the superblock on /dev/sdc3 and that should bring the array up to a degraded mode which will allow me to backup data and then proceed with rebuilding with adding /dev/sde. • Home server hard drive: 186k start-stop cycles in 325 days?

  I set up a home server about a year ago, using Ubuntu server (10.04 LTS at the moment), four disks in RAID 5 for storage (WD Green 1.5 TB) and a laptop drive for the OS. Today the output of smartctl, a command line utility for checking the SMART attributes of a hard drive, tells me that the primary OS drive has had no less than 186,000 start-stop cycles in 325 days and may be nearing the end of its lifespan. The smartctl output is in "normalized values", in this case a number between 200 and 000, where 200 is "brand new" and 000 means "worn out". My disk gets 001. So I wonder what happened: 186k start/stop cycles in 7820 hours is about one start/stop per 2.5 minutes around the clock. This seems somewhat excessive for a computer that sees actual use once or twice per day. (The RAID disks are normal, averaging to one start/stop per day, as expected.) Does anyone have similar experiences, or pointers to what might be the issue here? Specifically I'd like to know Why the massive start/stop count? Do I have some sort of configuration issue? Could there be a background service that is causing trouble? Could having a laptop disk as the OS drive be part of the problem? Can anyone confirm or deny this? • PPP connection between PalmOS and Ubuntu (over ttyUSB0?) without crashy "visor" kernel module

  I have a Palm Treo 680 which I'd like to use as a media remote, using Palm MPC. Almost the exact instructions on that page used to work perfectly for establishing a PPP connection over the USB cable; I think I last tried it in Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty). In Karmic, I find that /dev/ttyUSB{0,1} are not present by default, and when I modprobe visor to get them, the Palm immediately crashes and reboots, as seen in Ubuntu bug 522753 (it reboots again as long as the module is still loaded and USB is still connected). The usbserial module has the same result. From reading that bug and elsewhere, it appears that the visor module is abandoned, and jpilot and friends use some other approach to talk to PalmOS over USB these days, which might not even involve a ttyUSB device. My question is, therefore: How do I create a PPP connection between PalmOS and Karmic without crashing the Palm?

  Hello, I'm curious what the best tools are to use for analyzing problems with a WiFi network. Here's the scenario: I have a WiFi router (Belkin N+) that's setup in AP mode. I have three RT-N13U's that I've purchased to use as 'repeaters', but I've had so many problems when more than one of them is running (bad routes) that I've only got one active. Sometimes certain boxes on my network can't talk to others, and drops are quite frequent and quite aggravating. I'm running Mac, Windows, and Linux (Gentoo) boxes on this network, so any software, or steps I should take that work for any of those boxes should be sufficient. • Cannot uninstall XP SP3 update

  I need to uninstall Service Pack 3 because it broke a program I rely on (FrameMaker). I have done this before on other computers using Microsoft's SP3 uninstall instructions. However, on this computer, SP3 is not listed in Add/Remove Programs (and, yes, I have checked the "Show Updates" checkbox), there's no "$NtServicePackUninstall$" restore directory, and either Windows didn't create a restore point for the SP3 install or it has fallen off of the list of restorable points. Does anyone know of any other options?

• Tablet pen loses pressure sensitivity after screensaver

  Tablet: Genius MousePen 8x6 System: Windows 7 64-bit The question says it all. When I first boot up my machine, the tablet works fine, with pressure sensitivity functionality. However, if I leave the machine long enough for the screensaver to start up, when I return, the tablet works just like a mouse, and does not respond to changes in pen pressure. Unplugging and replugging the device does not fix the problem. Disabling and enabling the device in device manager does not fix the problem. When I try to use the tablet config tool -before- screensaver, the pressure config works fine. It gives you a little area where you can draw to test out the pressure. When I try to use the same tool -after- screensaver, the moment I click on that drawing area, the config tool freezes.

• Installing Trac on Windows under Apache 2.2?

  Trac is a python-powered bug-tracking and project-management app. According to Trac's wiki, there are several options for installing Trac, a standalone server (tracd), or under a dedicated webserver using one of these options: FastCGI - Not available on windows. mod_wsgi - No version of mod_wsgi available for Apache 2.2.22 and Python 2.7.3-amd64 that actually runs on my system! mod_python - no longer recommended, as mod_python is not actively maintained anymore) CGI -should not be used, as the performance is far from optimal) That leaves me with zero ways to run Trac on Windows. Apache 2.2.22 with ModWSGI loading, crashes the Apache2.2 service on startup without any error logs. Disabling the line in the apache configuration to load mod_wsgi restores sanity. I just want an installation of Trac on windows with Authentication enabled. I am unable to get authenetication to work using basic tracd like this: tracd -p 8000 --basic-auth="c:\tmp,c:\tmp\Passwords.md5.txt,mycompany" c:\tmp\RootFolder And I am unable to get Mod_WSGI installed. I'm going to keep trying to figure out a combination that works, I suspect I should have installed 32 bit python instead of 64 bit python, to start with. Did I do wrong to install Python 64 bit 2.7.3? I tried again with all 32 bit components, and still can't get MOD_WSGI to work with apache 2.2.22. I'm going to try to compile mod_wsgi myself with Visual C++ Express 2010, but it seems to me that it ought to be easier than this to get Trac running on windows, with authentication. Is there a way to run Trac on Windows, under Apache, with authentication? The last "Trac on windows" article died in 2008, leaving only this internet archive link for "Trac on windows" setup.

  I had a partition with Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows' System Reserved partition and the empty space of the beginning of disk. I moved two partitions to the beginning of disk using Ubuntu Live CD and GParted. After that, the Windows Loader didn't boot and throw an error about missing files. I fixed it using the commands: bootsect /nt60 sys /force /mbr bootrec /rebuildbcd bootrec /fixboot bootrec /fixmbr When I used "Automatic repair" option from "Advanced boot" menu, it throw an error like: Windows can't fix your boot problems. For more information see file C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt In this file I found a description of the system repair actions and at the end of file: Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully. Now, when I use the Advanced boot menu from Windows 8 (PC settings - General - Advanced startup) I receive an error: Restart your PC to try again. It looks like something didn't load correctly. Restarting might fix the problem. If this happens more than once, you might also be able to find help by searching online for the specific error code. Erorr code: 0x8007090. 0x80070490 is the error code ERROR_NOT_FOUND. What are the missing boot files and how can I restore them?   I use IE7 & IE8 disk images from microsoft and Virtual Box to test my websites in IE. One day I stopped being able to connect to the internet with virtual box, seemingly after trying to alter proxy related settings to view Hulu.com outside of the U.S...
