• Netcat I/O enhancements

  When Netcat integrated into OpenSolaris it was already clear that there will be couple of enhancements needed. The biggest set of the changes made after Solaris 11 Express was released brings various I/O enhancements to netcat shipped with Solaris 11. Also, since Solaris 11, the netcat package is installed by default in all distribution forms (live CD, text install, ...). Now, let's take a look at the new functionality: /usr/bin/netcat alternative program name (symlink) -b bufsize I/O buffer size -E use exclusive bind for the listening socket -e program program to execute -F no network close upon EOF on stdin -i timeout extension of timeout specification -L timeout linger on close timeout -l -p port addr previously not allowed usage -m byte_count Quit after receiving byte_count bytes -N file pattern for UDP scanning -I bufsize size of input socket buffer -O bufsize size of output socket buffer -R redir_spec port redirection addr/port[/{tcp,udp}] syntax of redir_spec -Z bypass zone boundaries -q timeout timeout after EOF on stdin Obviously, the Swiss army knife of networking tools just got a bit thicker. While by themselves the options are pretty self explanatory, their combination together with other options, context of use or boundary values of option arguments make it possible to construct small but powerful tools. For example: the port redirector allows to convert TCP stream to UDP datagrams. the buffer size specification makes it possible to send one byte TCP segments or to produce IP fragments easily. the socket linger option can be used to produce TCP RST segments by setting the timeout to 0 execute option makes it possible to simulate TCP/UDP servers or clients with shell/python/Perl/whatever script etc. If you find some other helpful ways use please share via comments.   I've got a very minimalistic setup of ubuntu precise, created using debootstrap. So please don't assume that any packages are installed just because they usually are. On that system, I'd like to play some sounds from a java applet. However, this always fails with the following error message: javax.sound.midi.MidiUnavailableException: Can not open line at com.sun.media.sound.SoftSynthesizer.open(SoftSynthesizer.java:1132) at com.sun.media.sound.SoftSynthesizer.open(SoftSynthesizer.java:1036) ... Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: No line matching interface SourceDataLine supporting format PCM_SIGNED 44100.0 Hz, 16 bit, stereo, 4 bytes/frame, little-endian is supported. at javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getLine(AudioSystem.java:476) at javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getSourceDataLine(AudioSystem.java:604) at com.sun.media.sound.SoftSynthesizer.open(SoftSynthesizer.java:1066) ... 35 more As the messages mention a soft synthesizer, and pcm lines, I expect that the lack of some midi daemon is not the issue here. As far as I can tell, the alsa kernel modules are loaded, including snd_hda_intel, snd_pcm, snd_seq_midi among others. I've also included the alsa-base and alsa-utils packages in my installation. alsa-mixer looks good, using “HDA Intel PCH” as its default device. What other packages, configuration settings or daemon startups does java require to make its sound output work?

• Cross platform development query

  I'm a Microsoft developer mainly, but there are a couple of small-ish projects I'd like to fiddle with which would benefit from being cross platform. The platforms I want to target are: Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and preferably iPhone, web (running in a browser). I need 3D (Around the level of support seen in something like Minecraft (I'm not writing Minecraft)), some networking. I'm pretty certain Java would work on all except iPhone. Looking at the "related questions" above it's offered up QT (no browser or phone afaik) and also HTML/CSS/Javascript (3D? package for desktop?) The other alternative is to have seperate versions for seperate platforms, developed with some common code where possible. That option isn't something I know anything about. Does anyone have experience of this sort of conundrum? I figured here was better than SO, because I imagine there are compromises which extend beyond technical choice. Finally, this is not a commercial operation, so some of the very expensive cross platform tools are out of the question unless they offer some sort of community edition. Thanks for your time.

• The Fantastic New WebLogic on Oracle Database Appliance 2.9 Release is Here!

  Last week was a big day in virtualised ODA-land as it saw the launch of WebLogic on ODA 2.9. Admittedly it doesn't sound like a very exciting release but it is one that we at O-box have been looking forward to for quite some time. Let me explain why, then we'll look into the details... The ODA X4-2 has 48 Intel Xeon cores. That is a lot of compute power. Whilst the largest O-box SOA Appliance single environment configuration can in theory use all those cores (currently with 40 vCPU of SOA!) the vast majority of O-box users will want smaller configurations. Prior to 2.9 the Oracle WebLogic implementation only supported one domain per ODA, so the conundrum O-box development faced last year was either: offer customers only one SOA environment on their O-box for now (but have the benefit of a standard, easily supportable WebLogic installation), or build our own WebLogic/OTD OVM templates from scratch. One of our driving goals with O-box is to give the best possible experience and make the appliance as supportable as possible. Therefore we took the gamble that we would stick with the Oracle's one-domain WebLogic configuration initially, and just hope that it would deliver multi-domain support for us in a timely manner (note: this is probably not a strategy that business textbooks would recommend!). Anyway, we've been working closely with Oracle Product Management for a few months now and I'm delighted to see 2.9 as the fruits of their labour. This also neatly ties in with several recent requests for O-box to include OSB as well as SOA/BPEL (which we have always wanted to have in separate domains). • Why kernel source is not installed

  I want to install kernel source in Ubuntu 12.04 which is not installed. I have checked the same using the following command : dpkg -s kernel Output is Kernel is not installed no information available Hence I have followed the following steps to install the same: 1.Installed the Dependencies by the following command: sudo apt-get install gcc libncurses5-dev git-core kernel-package fakeroot build-essential sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade Download kernel source by the following command: wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.x/linux-3.5.tar.bz2 tar -xvf linux-3.5.tar.bz2 cd linux-3.5/ 3.Compiled the source code to generate the .deb packages by the following command make-kpkg clean fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-spica kernel_image kernel_headers Install the .deb packages (two .deb packages generated, one is to install the kernel headers, another one is to install the kernel image) by the following command sudo dpkg -i linux-*.deb But after reboot it seems kernel is not installed (checked by dpkg -s kernel). Please tell where I am going wrong. Also, In step 3, I guess I am installing a new kernel (named spica kernel_image) but during the boot up this new kernel is not showing as option. Please help me

• How to create and administer multi-architecture PPAs?

  I have a program that needs to be recompiled for every ubuntu version. Currently I am packaging it using Ubuntu's PPA just for the current distribution. Eventually, I have to provide packages for the previous ubuntu version. I am not sure how to accomplish this. How does the Ubuntu PPA build server works - does it just look at the distribution field in the most current changelog entry (in the debian/changelog file) to determine for what distribution the package should be build? The debian specification allows to add multiple distributions into the distribution field. But this does not seam to help me. Some ubuntu documents talk about encoding the distribution name into the version number (in the debian changelog file). But how does this work in practice? A new version of the program is available, then what? Do I add for each distribution a new changelog entry and the PPA buildserver builds automatically for each distribution new packages after dput'ing it up? Or does the PPA buildserver just looks at the first changelog entry?

• Unable to start lightdm but can startx

  I am trying to make my own Live USB and I have successfully generated an ISO file with a newly installed, configured and customized Xubuntu 12.04 LTS installation. My problem is that, no matter I boot the ISO in VirtualBox or in GRUB with loopback, it just cannot start the lightdm. When booting, I can see the log messages on the screen, it stucks at Stopping System V compablities or Configuring Network security. And tty7 is frozen... If I switch to tty1, I can get a logged-in shell as ubuntu@ubuntu. The weird thing is: When I type sudo start lightdm or just sudo lightdm, it will switch to tty7 and the screen flashes. Then nothing happened. Return to tty1 and I can see lightdm running, process xxxx. But the process does not exist. It was just crashed immediately I think. (That's why the screen flashes.) However, when I type startx, I can get into the desktop! That's amazing for me. I am not very clear about the relationship between X Server and Display Manager, but I think lightdm is running when I see the desktop! Then, what's wrong with sudo start lightdm? I use this command every time I power on my laptop since I have a text parameter added in grub.cfg. It never "crashed immediately". I need to use sudo start lightdm because it gets me into "Xubuntu Session" instead of "Xfce Session", the prior is more beautiful... Could anyone help?

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on one (physical) hd and on the other one Windows. On both drives grub is installed to boot both operating systems. When I wanted to install SP1 for Win 7 I had to add a bootable flag to the partition from which Windows boots, otherwise the installation of SP1 does not work. I did so by booting into Ubuntu and using gparted to add this flag. After doing so the update for SP1 worked without any problems. When trying to boot back into Ubuntu grub complained that it couldn't find the kernel anymore! I tried to boot into a Ubuntu minimal cd and to restore grub using chroot, update-grub and grub-install which didn't work. I still had the problem that it was Unable to boot Ubuntu putting me in some minimal system called initramfs. It seems however that the uuid of the partitions changed. I guess this happened when I added the bootflag to the windows disk. Next thing I tried was to tell grub not to use the uuid for loading the kernel by uncommenting something in /etc/default/grub. Then I got the kernel booting but it suddenly stops (I guess when it is trying to mount the root file system) saying that the concerning uuid does not exist putting me into initramfs again. The strange thing is that there I coulnd't even manage to mount the root partition using /dev/sdb1 (on which it is in my case). I would be glad if there is a way to restore the system again without having to reinstall it.

Doing some research along with my wife, I found this simple security vulnerability from LinkedIn that can let anyone view a contact’s full profile even when you have a “not upgraded” LinkedIn account and that the contact is a “3rd + Everyone Else”. Here’s an example of what I am talking about. I just made a random search on LinkedIn for a contact whose name starts with Sacha. Do note, this is just a walkthrough and I am not publicizing any Sacha. I check the “3rd + Everyone Else” and find a “LinkedIn Member”. On clicking this person’s profile to view, I am presented with the following page, asking me to upgrade. Make a note of this page’s web address and you get the profile id from it. For example, for this contact, the page address is: http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=868XXX35 The Profile Id for this contact is 868XXX35. Now, open following page where the Profile Id is the same as the one we grabbed a moment earlier. https://touch.www.linkedin.com/?#profile/868XXX35 The mobile page exposes this contact information and you even get the possibility to connect to this person without an introduction mail (InMail). I hope someone from LinkedIn sees and issues a fix for this. I am pretty sure, it’s something that they don’t want the user to do without purchasing an upgrade package.

• Stuck With grub rescue> console

  Here is the background of my issue: I just recently installed the latest version of Ubuntu along side with Windows 8 Enterprise. However upon checking the disk size, it seems that some of the portions of the hd memory were gone so I decided to check the disk partition and have seen that is was being used by another file system. Thinking that the Ubuntu takes it boots stuff from my drive C: , I deleted that partition and formated so I can use it to store some movies, music etc. Now, as I switch on my machine, I am stucked with: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue> I googled a lot and saw the following command which seems no to me like sudo, chainloader etc, all of these command only returns unknown command in the console. What I just wanted is to boot from my Windows 8 OS. Just to add, I can't open the BIOS menu so I could choose what media to boot. As I open my machine it automatically takes me to grub rescue console. Here are the thing I already have: Ubuntu Installation Disk Windows 8 System repair Disk I just don't know how to boot into these things. Let me know what to do.

  I have an asus k55VM. The problem is that once done the partitions to install windows 7 finalize you and then ubuntu 12.10 the grub not to appear. On having created the table of partitions with gparted I did it in format msdos but then on having installed windows gently accepted me and he says to me that I must do it with format gpt therefore I erase the disc in the assistant of installation and believe a partition of 160 gb Later between with live CD to ubuntu and believe other partitions between which, one ext4 for ubuntu... I install and restart. On having restarted the grub does not go out but if the partitions appear of windows. To seeing if someone helps me am desperate. Thank you very much Tengo un asus k55VM. El problema es que una vez hechas las particiones instalar windows 7 ultimate y luego ubuntu 12.10 no aparece el grub. Al crear la tabla de particiones con gparted lo hice en formato msdos pero luego al instalar windows no me acepta y me dice que debo hacerlo con formato gpt por lo tanto borro el disco en el asistente de instalacion y creo una particion de 160 gb Posteriormente entre con live cd a ubuntu y creo otras particiones entre las cuales, un ext4 para ubuntu... • Resizing partition using Gparted gives "can't have overlapping partitions" error

  I just decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 on my Dell laptop. However I didn't do this manually but instead used the "Run Ubuntu alongside Windows 7" option upon installation, and now the partition that Ubuntu runs on has very little space (It's giving me warnings). I'm trying to use Gparted 0.12.1-5 (via a live CD) to give Windows less space and give Ubuntu more. I've managed to remove 100GB from the Windows partition so I now have some unallocated space between Windows and Ubuntu. This is what it looks like inside Ubuntu (not using the live CD, since it won't let me mount a USB to save a screenshot): http://i.stack.imgur.com/0keQq.png So first I take sda4 (extended?) and resize it to the left so it takes up all the unallocated space. Then I resize sda5 (ext4) as well so it takes up all the new space. However, when I hit apply, it fails on the first action (resizing sd4), saying "can't have overlapping partitions". Any ideas as to why this happens? I also tried resizing sda4 by just a few MB so that it definitely didn't overlap anything, but I still got the same error message. To clarify, I am doing it using the CD, I just took the screenshot from Ubuntu. Any help would be greatly appreciated! And again, I can't mount any USB (I'm following the guide on the gparted website but it says "Invalid argument" or something like that) so I couldn't attach the details file from Gparted. If this is needed, I may need some hints on how to solve the USB issue as well. :) Thanks

  Did you ever wonder what this message in your GlassFish server.log file means? JMXStartupService has started JMXConnector on JMXService URL service:jmx:rmi://192.168.2.102:8686/jndi/rmi://192.168.2.102:8686/jmxrmi It means you can monitor any GlassFish server process, remotely or locally, using any standard Java Management Extensions (JMX) client.  Examples: jconsole or jvisualvm.   Copy the part of the log message that starts with "service:" into the Add JMX Connection dialog of jvisualvm:  or into the New Connection dialog of jconsole: (The full string is truncated in the on-screen display, but if you copied from the server.log and pasted into the form it should all be there.) The examples above are for a DAS, and your host will probably be different.   The server.log files for other GlassFish servers (instances) will have similar log entries giving the JMX connection string to use for those processes.  Look for the host and/or port to be different. Note a few things about security: Here we've assumed you are using the default admin username and password.  If you are not, just enter a valid admin username and password for your installation.  Once connected, you have normal access to all the JVM statistics and controls. You can use JMX clients that support MBeans to view the GlassFish configuration.  When you connect to the DAS, you can also change that configuration, but you can only view configuration when you connect to an instance. Now we are about to start second stage of POC. But today my boss told me that my senior and channel partner team have issue with me ,regarding my communication. So before considering me on this project they want to resolve this issue or not considered me . I agree i have less communications skills. and I don't ask any question till i need to any one , i prefer to ask on stackoverflow. But i don't know, how this issue is being arise ,i had done all the things they asked , replied to all email and talk on phone. I always obeyed them. I always told them what they asked. what should i do that these type of issue doesn't arrive in future. And now boss told me to prepare a script to talk with my senior to resolve the issue. what should i talk to my senior? I want to work on this project , but i don't want to do so much request to work on this project. • Domain transfer and New Hosting Management

  I wanted to migrate from my older registrar to GoDaddy. Main reason because current registrar/hosting provider doesn't support .NET. My old registrar gave me control over the domain and hosting account. So, basically I have everything I would need. ( I know theory only ) I applied for Transfer of domain, bought a hosting package from GoDaddy and uploaded new web site. So, I am waiting for domain transfer and it tells me that I have to wait for 5-7 days for approval. Okay. But today, my old registrar told/taunted me that I really didn't need to apply for transfer. What could possibly I have done differently? My domain expires on this 15th. Now I don't know much about how all of this really works, but I am guessing he meant, "you should have waited for 15 days and let it expire after which you should buy the domain as it is expired". Is it really so(I doubt) or there are some other ways I could have got same result but without transferring domain? (like, changing DNS entries) I have read like all of the documentation available on namecheap/GoDaddy/Whois about domain transfers. But maybe because I am new to this it is all confusing to me. I would also like to know what to do with DNS settings after transfer succeeds. I want to kill the old website. So, what nameserver settings I need to change, new one or old one or both? I have old host+old domain registrar + old working site on one hand, on the other hand, new site + pending domain transfer + new DNS settings.
