• Odd Drag and drag bug in nested attributes Rails

  I've got this weird bug when trying to use drag and drag for two models (one nested within another). I've a category model which has many apps. In my category index page, I tried use "content_tag_for" to sort categories and apps within each category. But for some odd reason only the first element has drag, drop enabled. I can drag and drop categories all I want, but I can't drag the app in the second category, just the first category. Copy and paste gets ridiculously hopeless with HAML, so here's a Pastie instead. I made a sample app on heroku for you to check out here. Drag and drag work for both category and app, so I'm guessing it has to do something with the ul or li. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

• What can't I build in Silverlight?

  First, I know that Silverlight needs to be embedded in a website, usually an asp page. I understand I need a delivery boy. My question is this; What types of apps/projects are so filled with technological hurdles as to make them ridiculous to do in Silverlight versus ASP.net? I know that with perseverance and flexibility I can probably make EVERY app in Silverlight, in some version or another, but which ones would be blatantly simple in, say ASP.net(or even WPF) but quite complicated in Silverlight? Basically what I am asking is if there is any reason I shouldn't consider Silverlight my first stop for every problem, obvious exceptions not with standing(a service or console). For me specifically, at this point, I am only building in house apps.

• Which version of MSXML should I use?

  Seems like this would be a common question, though I could not find it on SO. Which version of MSXML should I use in my applications, and more importantly, how should I decide? There is MSXML3, 4, 5 and 6. I recently posted some code in calling-wcf-service-by-vbscript that used MSXML v4. AnthonyWJones posted that I shouldn't use 4, but instead 3 or 6, but probably 3. Certainly not v5! Why? I'd like to know more about the criteria for selecting the version of MSXML to use in my apps. Bonus question: Does anyone have a summary of the differences between the various versions of MSXML over time? Summary so far: MSXML6 Should be first choice. was released in 2006, and includes perf and compliance fixes. Use this if you can. It's good. There are no merge modules; to bundle the MSXML6 runtime with your app, MS suggests packaging the MSXML6 msi file. MSXML6 is an upgrade from MSXML3/4 but does not replace them, because it discontinues some features. You can get the MSI here. MSXML3 Second choice. Most widely deployed version. Originally shipped in March 2000. Actively maintained, no new features. Currently supported, if you are on SP5 (shipped in 2005) or later. SP7 is current (also from 2005). MSXML5 was released only as part of MS-Office. Currently supported by Microsoft, but only as part of Office, not for building apps. Don't build apps that depend on MSXML5: Verboten. MSXML4 originally shipped? Currently in "maintenance mode". Microsoft is encouraging people to move off MSXML4 to MSXML6. • Learn MacRuby or Objective-C?

  Well, my fisrt question was a bit too general so i ll try again and hope this one is better. The way i see it is: Ruby-MacRuby or IronRuby or Rails Obj-c-Mac Development So Ruby has clearly more potential in desktop and web platforms and now with MacRuby, OSX native (and commercial) apps are on the way. If i get it wrong please correct me. For me that i will do a fresh start should i go with the modern Ruby or start learning c+obj-c? Will a newcomer benefit much (in learning & coding time, frustration, complexity) by learning/using macruby for osx apps rather objective-c? Or its pretty much the same? I hope some day to hang around here and help others.

• Android USB driver for Xperia X10a

  I've been trying for a couple hours now, and have hit all of the sites Google found, but i cannot get the Android USB driver on my XP box to talk to my new Xperia X10a. I found the lines that some kind soul posted, and has been syndicated repeated, but they don't work for me. The idea is to add them to the Google.NTx86 and Google.NTamd64 sections of the android_winusb.inf file: ;Xperia X10 %SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0FCE&PID_E12E %CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0FCE&PID_E12E&MI_01 I tried a number of variations of the first line, including "Sony Ericsson X10a", which is what XP shows me in both the "found new hardware" wizard and the device manager, but no luck. The result is always the same. Here are my steps: Plug in the phone via USB "found new hardware wizard" appears Choose "No, not this time" and "next" Choose "Install from a list or specific location..." and "next" Choose "Search for best driver...", check "Include this location...", and browse for the "usb_driver" folder in the Android SDK installation. Click "next" It does a quick search and then says "Cannot install this hardware", "... because the wizard cannot find the necessary software". I've tried more things that i can recall now, including deleting registry entries, but it just won't work. Any help would be appreciated at this point. Regards, m@

  I'm considering utilizing the ASP.NET Membership Provider for a few different web apps/tools with a single login approach. REQUIREMENTS User logs in to my.domain.com and sees a list of apps/tools that they have permission to use. The user selects the tool they'd like to use and clicks the link. When the tool opens, it is able to identify that they are currently logged in and who they are to identify any unique permissions to the application. I know that each app could simply point to the same back end Membership Provider DB, however will each app require a login or will it be able to identify if the user is already logged in?

I have no specific requirement as of yet because I am in the evaluation phase. No real optimization, nice. memcachedb claims on the order of 17,000 to 23,000 inserts per second, 44,000 to 64,000 reads per second. I'm also wondering how the others stack up speed wise.

I currently have 2 ASP.NET MVC apps in my solution. First I run the first one by setting it to be startup project. Then I have set the persist security of the cookie to true so I can access it from any where under localhost. The cookie writes fine and I get logged in and all godd for now. BTW the url for this login page is: http //localhost/MyAccount/Login Now then I stop the solution and set the other MVC apps to be the startup. Then I run it. But once it crashes in Firefox I have a look in the Page Info and then security and Cookies and its there and its the same cookie. What am I doing wrong?

  I'm following the demo code from article of phpsqlgeocode.html In the db, I inserted some Chinese addresses, which is utf8 encode.   I would like to deep link directly to a GWT app page within a Facebook iFrame Canvas. The first part is simple using GWT's History token with URLs like: http://www.example.com/MyApp/#page1 which would open page1 within my app. Facebook Apps use an application url like: http://apps.facebook.com/myAppName which frames my Canvas Callback URL http://www.example.com/MyApp/ Is there a way to specify a canvas callback url (or bookmark url) which will take the user to a specific page rather than the index page? Why? you may ask. Besides all the benefits of deep links... I want the "Go To Application" url to take users to an index page w/ marketing material (the canvas callback url) I want the "Bookmark URL" to take (likely returning) users to a login page and bypass downloading the marketing content (and that huge SWF file).

  There is a strong tendency of making web apps and even seems that very soon a lot of features will be available online so that for every day use people will have all necessary software free online and they will not need to install any software locally. Only specific (professional) tools that usually people don’t use at home will not be available as a web app. So my question, how do you imagine selling software that was necessary for everyday use and was not free (seems they can't make money any more by selling their product – no need of those products). And what disadvantages have web apps, that is to say, what is bad to use software online compared with having the same software locally (please list)? Please do not consider this question not connected with programming, as I would like to have a little statistics from professional programmers who are aware from nowday’s tendency of software and programming. • Understanding NSHTTPCookieStorage for the iPhone

  Maybe I'm missing something, but from Apple's documentation for NSHTTPCookieStorage, I can't help but wonder how this is safe to use. Does this mean that cookie storage is shared across all apps on the iPhone? If my app makes an Http call that results in some cookies being saved, do all apps now have access to these cookies? Methods like: cookiesForURL: Returns all the receiver's cookies that will be sent to a specified URL. make it look even more suspicious. Can someone explain how this is OK, and what the class does? Also, assuming my understanding is flawed and this is indeed sandboxed per-app, do calls made using NSURLRequest automatically save/retrieve cookies from this store or is it the developers responsibility to set request headers before dispatching the request?

• IE7 - visited links revert to unvisted after page refresh

  Hello, A number of our users have just upgraded from IE6 to IE7. the upgreaded users are reporting an issue with visited links reverting to their unvisited color after a page refresh. This only happens to links that are using javascript instead of a hard coded URL: <script lang="JavaScript"> <!-- function LoadGoogle() { var LoadGoogle = window.open('http://www.google.com'); } --> </script> <a href="javascript:LoadGoogle()">Google using javascript</a> <a href="#" OnClick="javascript:LoadGoogle()">Google using javascript OnClick</a> The above links will revert back to the unvisited color whenever the page is refreshed. It doesn't matter if the page is refreshed because of a post back, manually hitting the refresh or f5 button, or from an auto-refresh function. Please note, the above code is an over simplification of what is actually happening, but I believe it illustrates the issue well enough. This is causing a problem for our users because we are providing them with a list of items that are all opened into new windows via javascript when they are clicked; and refresh the parent page when the users are finished with them. Each time the parent page is refreshed all of these links revert back to their unvisited color, so our users are losing track of which items they've worked on. I've been digging around and it looks like this is intended behavior. IE7 doesn't register these links with the browsers history. Does anyone know a work around that will allow us to keep these javascript links in the visited state without having to do a major overhaul of the apps code? Thank you.

  After hours of trying to debug a third-party application having trouble with fopen(), i finally discovered that php -r 'echo(file_get_contents("http://www.google.com/robots.txt"));' fails, but php -r 'echo(file_get_contents("http://173.194.32.81/robots.txt"));' Succeeds. Note that as the webserver user, I can ping www.google.com and it resolves just fine. I straced both executions of PHP, and they diverge like this: For the numerical v4 URL: socket(PF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_IP) = 3 fcntl(3, F_GETFL) = 0x2 (flags O_RDWR) fcntl(3, F_SETFL, O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK) = 0 connect(3, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(80), sin_addr=inet_addr("173.194 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLOUT}], 1, 0) = 0 (Timeout) ...[bunch of poll/select/recvfrom]... close(3) = 0 For the domain name: socket(PF_INET6, SOCK_DGRAM, IPPROTO_IP) = 3 close(3) = 0 PHP didn't even try to do anything with that socket, it seems. Or even resolve the domain, for that matter. WTF ? Recompiling PHP with or without ipv6 support did not seem to matter. Disabling ipv6 on this system is not desirable. Gentoo Linux, PHP 5.3.14, currently giving a try to PHP 5.4 and see if it helps. Anyone has an idea ? EDIT: php -r 'echo gethostbyname("www.google.com");' Works and yield an ipv4, while php -r 'echo(file_get_contents("http://[2a00:1450:4007:803::1011]/"));' Seems to return a blank result. EDIT 2: I didn't even notice the first time, that the v6 socket opened when the name is used is a SOCK_DGRAM.

• Why doesn't jquery .load() load a text file from an external website?

  In the example below, when I click the button, it says "Load was performed" but no text is shown. I have a clientaccesspolicy.xml in the root directory and am able to asynchronously load the same file from silverlight. So I would think I should be able to access from AJAX as well.
