• Which one should I choose AMQP or XMPP for real-time browser-based game?

  Hi, I'm choosing between AMQP (RabbitMQ) vs XMPP (eJabberd) for my browser-based flash-free javascript powered real-time turn-based game. I don't know much about AMQP and XMPP protocol. I would like to use PHP for user-authorization and some data store-retrieve with MySQL. As far as I found out, RabbitMQ has PHP clients but eJabberd not. What I understood is javascript client calls PHP script and manipulate necessary processing and then pass to AMQP or XMPP server to pass the data to opponent player. There is a good book 'Pro XMPP Programming with JS and jQuery' from Wrox but there is no example with PHP. So following are my questions. 1) Which protocol is suit for my game? 2) Shall I choose RabbitMQ just for it's PHP client support?

• MySql UDF using shared library won't load

  I am attempting to create a mysql UDF which will match a fingerprint using Digital Persona's free linux SDK library. I have written a trivial UDF as a learning experience which worked fine. However, when I added a dependency to Digital Persona's shared object I can no longer get MySql to load my UDF. I added includes to DP's headers and compiled my UDF using: gcc -fPIC -Wall -I/usr/src/mysql-5.0.45-linux-i686-icc-glibc23/include -shared -o dp_udf.so dp_udf.cc I also tried adding the -static argument, but whenever I restart MySql, I get the error: Can't open shared library 'dp_udf.so' (errno: 0 /usr/local/mysql/lib/plugin/dp_udf.so: undefined symbol: MC_verifyFeaturesEx) MC_verifyFeaturesEx is a function defined "dpMatch.h" which I included, and is implemented in libdpfpapi.so which I have tried placing in the same location as my dp_udf.so and in /usr/lib. Am I doing something wrong with my call to gcc (my C++ skills are rusty) or does MySql not allow UDFs to use additional shared objects?

• License problem embedding Mono?

  I'd like to embed Mono into an .exe file but the problem is the license, because a LGPL library can only be linked with LGPL code. However, I'd like to build a commercial app, so I ask if is possible to use a stub that launches a DLL version of the Mono runtime and executes my app. Or do you know a better way to do this? I need a cross-platform framework and Mono seems good, but there are some problem to pack it in one file, so you know a "free" way to do this?

  I want to forward declare a static member function of a class in another file. What I WANT to do looks like this: BigMassiveHeader.h: class foo { static void init_foos(); } Main.cpp: class foo; void init_foos(); int main(char** argv, int argc) { foo::init_foos() } This fails out with "error C2027: use of undefined type 'tt_py_ns::foo'" Is there a way to accomplish what I want to do with out making init_foos a free function, or including BigMassiveHeader.h? (BigMassiveHeader.h is noticeably effecting compile time, and is included everywhere.)

• AJAX Beginner: If then statement

  In menu.html, I have my menu items(a href links), let's call them, menu_1, menu_2, .... In map.js displays the contents of a map, it calls an API to display some layers and maps. I have a lot of maps to show but i only want to call the api once. Using AJAX, I was wondering if it's possible to have an if/then or select/case in my js, so that if menu_1 is clicked, then implement map_1 etc. without having the page to reload. The only way I thought I could do this is using Post/get .. so when you click on menu_1 it takes you to page.php?page_id=1 . JS will read that and display the map. I'm new to JS and AJAX so please feel free to butcher me

  Hello, I was told more than once that Delphi handles dynamic classes better than static.Thereby using the following: type Tsomeclass=class(TObject) private procedure proc1; public someint:integer; procedure proc2; end; var someclass:TSomeclass; implementation ... initialization someclass:=TSomeclass.Create; finalization someclass.Free; rather than type Tsomeclass=class private class procedure proc1; public var someint:integer; class procedure proc2; end; 90% of the classes in the project I'm working on have and need only one instance.Do I really have to use the first way for using those classes?   offshore outsourced programmers charge fraction of what costs a North American developer. should I still pursue my major as computing science ? Why would companies spend more on North American/local developers where they can get the same quality if not better job done offshore ? I am just concerned for the development labor market, the free market wants the lowest cost provider. not just programming but many high skilled labor such as engineering, scientists, artists and etc. perhaps i should become a lawyer ?

• Texture allocations being doubled in iPhone OpenGL ES

  The below couple lines are called 15 times during initialization. The tx-size is reported at 512 everytime, so this will allocate a 1mb image in memory 15 times, for a total of 15mb used.. However, I noticed instruments is reporting a total of 31 allocations! (15*2)+1 glTexImage2D(GL_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_RGBA, tx-size, tx-size, 0, GL_RGBA, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, spriteData); free(spriteData); Likewise in another area of my program that allocates 6 256x256x4 (256kB) textures.. I see 13 sitting there. (6*2)+1 Anyone know what's going on here? It seems like awful memory management, and I really hope it's my fault. Just to let everyone know, I'm on the simulator.

• Application of a rule based expert system

  Hi, The company I am working now has developed a Rule-based Expert System. It is a web-based system and supports Flow Chart, Decision Table, Fuzzy Rules and Forward Chaining Rules. It is something like iLog but less complex and powerful. However, one serious problem we are facing now is that we have NO CUSTOMER so far. We have spent 4 yrs to develop that product. Because my company is a start-up and has no reference, no one is confident in our product. Without feedback, we cannot improve our product. • is there a multiple payment providers (paypal, ogone, ...) php module for use in a web app?

  We are building an ecommerce app where we want our users to pick out a (any provider we can make compatible with our app) payment provider. Up to today, we only support paypal and we have implemented this rather manually. We are looking for some sort of a module (free or commercial) to easily plugin in more payment providers to let customers accept payments through them. Our customers would use this to accept payments for sales in their web shops. Any ideas on such "modules"? I know of the Zend_Payment module but that's not updated anymore or isn't out yet at all. We run PHP in the Zend Framework if that matters.

• Two windows fullscreen on two different screen.

  Hi! I'm actually working on an app to display an image onto a Dome. The dome projection system is constitued of two projector and a pc running a GentoO Linux and KDE, with nvidia TwinView system. Since here i've used SDL to display a fullscreen windows, and it display my app onto the two screen. But i just figured that i need to project two different images, one on each projector. That's why i search for a solution to display a fullscreen window on the first screen (projector) and another on the second. But SDL fullscreen just extend the window to the two screens. I can use any librairie (since it light and free, as i will wrap it into my small "API"), or change display setting. BTW it would be nice to have openGL support, since SDL manage only one window ^^"

While No.1 framework is Intraweb, there is a lot of interest around ExtJS, that has 2 incarnations: 1) the opensource ExtPascal 2) the closedsource Raudus Now the products are different, Raudus never supports the latest ExtJS version (while ExtPascal does because as far as I read it "almost automatically updates itself to the latest ExJS version"), Raudus "seems" much RAD (much similar to Intraweb from the RAD point of view). Anyway why chose one or the other? Why Raudus since it is free cannot become Open Source?

• Developing ebooks- software?

  I've written a few documents for friends or blogs on software testing, job hunting and android development. I've been toying with the idea of producing some programming-related ebooks. However, developing these in Word or OpenOffice seems too amateurish compared to some of the fantastically produced books out there. I'm proficient in LaTeX but have never seen it used to produce ... 'marketable' works - just technical papers, maths, etc - which is great for code but not for distribution. Has anyone seen any good (preferably free / open source) tool or software for developing/compiling professional-looking marketable ebooks (probably to .pdf or .exe format - but I can take care of that part if need be)? And more importantly, ones that are easy to use to format any code samples or snippets that I may choose to include. Much appreciated.

  How to access block level storage via the kernel (w/o using scsi libraries)? My intent is to implement a block level storage protocol over network for learning purpose, almost the same way SCSI works. Requests will be generated by initiator and sent to target (both userspace program) which makes call to kernel module and returns the data using TCP protocol to initiator. So far, I have managed to build a simple "Hello" module and run it (I am new at kernel programming), but unable to proceed with block access. After searching a lot, I found struct buffer_head * bread(int dev,int block) in linux/fs.h, but the compiler throws error. error: implicit declaration of function ‘bread’ Please help, also feel free to advice on starting with kernel programming. We are moving to VS2010 now. We do not have MSDN licenses for our company right now. We are looking to buy just the VS2010 no MSDN. It is very pricey to get 6 of VS2010 premium. We need to get our database into source control. We are currently email scripts around, and it very difficult to keep track off. Are there any non-microsoft solutions that would be the same features and be free?

  Hi all, I always here that Java being open-source is a big benefit, but I fail to see how Java being open-source should draw me to use it as opposed to .NET which is closed-source. This website has some Q&A sections (What is the significance of these developments to the industry? in particular) that give a little info, but is being free the only (or the biggest) advantage to Java being open-source? • Image gallery control for ASP.Net with filtering capabilities

  I'm writing an ASP.Net application which needs to display a large number of thumbnails, preferably in a paginated format. These thumbnails will be stored on the server's hard disk, but will have their filenames listed in a SQL Server database. What I want to do is to be able to filter the images being displayed based on criteria within the database. I've looked at the NotesForGallery control, which I really like, but it doesn't seem to have a way to do that. --if I'm wrong, please correct me. Are there any other image gallery type controls, preferably free, that can do what I need? I'm hoping someone can recommend a control or solution that will point me in the right direction. • OCR Web Service

  I am searching for an OCR web service (eventually open source, preferably free) that simply receives an image and returns the text of the image in writing. I've looked at tesseract, OCRopus and GOCR but the only open server I could find is WeOCR. Unfortunately the detection rates (at least during my tests) are sub-par and the speed is not much better. Does anyone have any experience with OCR web services? I guess the license of tesseract allows the operation of such a service, are there any out there?

  I need someone to explain the following names; Asynchronous Delegates. Asynchronous methods. Asynchronous events. I'm currently going over this for my 70-536 exam and I am covering all my bases so far. The threading chapter and online resources have been good to me on my second read through. • Alternative to BerkeleyDB?

  I'm looking for a dbm-like library that I can use in place of Berkeley DB, which I'm currently using. My main reason for switching is the licensing fees for BDB are pretty high (free for open source apps, but my employer does not want to open source this particular app for various reasons). I've looked briefly at qdbm but it doesn't look like it will fill my needs -- lots of keys (several million) and large data items ( 1-5 megabytes). Before I continue my search I figured I'd ask because it seems there are tons of dbm-like libraries out there.
