• Black screen after installing ubuntu 12.04

  :) After installing Ubuntu 12.04 from a CD, everything goes perfectly until I restart the computer (after the installation process) im not able to see the login screen, I just get a black screen! so I press randomly keys and sometimes im able to see the background wallpaper but almost instantly the black screen appears. I think that I have to update the nVidia drivers or something like this I tried to start from the recovery mode, update my package, but still the same problem I can't start with the graphical interface as well, i get an error message 'no screen' !! I dont understand why I have this problem because before the installation im able to try ubuntu (from the cd) and works perfect. Thanks !!

• genetic algorithm for leveling/build test

  I'm starting o build a online PVP (duel like, one-to-one) game, where there is leveling, skill points, special attacks and all the common stuff. Since I never did anything like that, I'm still thinking about the maths behind the level/skill/special balances. So I thought good way of testing the best/combo builds would implement a Genetic Algorith. It'd be like that: Generate a big portion of random characters Make them fight, level them up accordingly to the victories(more XP)/losses(less XP) Mate the winners, crossing their builds, to try to make even best characters Add some more random chars, emulating new players Repeat the process for some time, or util find some chars who can beat everyone butts So I could play with the math and try to find the balance where the top x% chars would be a mix of various build types. So, is it a good idea, or there are some other easier method to do the balance? PS: I like this also, because it sounds funny

  Hello. So I have some experience programming in Java, and at the moment I am learning how to use Python. I have read on the process of game design and such. I also have media covered, got experience with graphics and audio. My question is geared more towards the actual tools to use for making games, developing. I am willing to commit to a long term development cycle, as I will be doing this as a hobby. I've heard of Flash, Gamemaker, etc. I don't intend to create my own Game Engine, so I was looking for a platform that is extensible and easy to program with an OOP mind frame. As a plus it would be great of said game could be played directly from a website. TIA!

• Recover partition after GParted resizing interrupted by unexpected shutdown

  As I was resizing my partitions using GParted, my laptop battery ran out, and the process was interrupted. Now, I am unable to mount the partition which I was trying to resize. I get the following error when I click to mount the partition on nautilus: Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda3, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so How can I go about recovering my data? Is there a safe way to attempt to force-mount the partition in question? Any help towards recovering my data is sincerely appreciated.

  What if I have an arbitrary renderTarget, that is smaller than the screen (say it is 1x1 pixel) and I want to make sure in the VertexShaderFunction that all my pixels end up exactly in that 1 pixel region? No matter what I do, they all seem to get culled at some point, though GraphicDevise.Clear() works OK. Where is the top left corner of the renderTarget Vertex-shader-vise? I tried output.Position = (0,0,0,0)/(0,0,0,1)/(1,1,1,1)/(-0.5,0.5,0,1) NOTHING works! Fullscreen quad is not an option 'cause I actually need to process geometry in the shaders to get the results I need.

  Introduction Oracle has a lot of software on offer.  Components of the stack can evolve at different rates and different versions of the components may be in use at any given time.  All this means that even the process of downloading the bits you need can be somewhat daunting.  Here, by way of example, and hopefully to convince you that there is method in the downloading madness,  we describe how to go about downloading the bits for Oracle Identity Manager  (OIM) 11.1.1.5.Firstly, a couple of preliminary points: Folks with Oracle products already installed and looking for bug fixes, patch bundles or patch sets would go directly to the Oracle support website. This Oracle document is a comprehensive description of the Oracle FMW download process and the licensing that applies to downloaded software.   Downloading Oracle Identity Manager 11.1.1.5     To be sure we download the right versions, first locate the Certification Matrix for OIM 11.1.1.5: first go to the Fusion Certification Page then go to the “System Requirements and Supported Platforms for Oracle Identity and Access Management 11gR1” link. • Multithreaded UI desktop application issues

  I am involved into development a rich UI project: desktop windows application. Application uses asynchronous invocations and in its turn it should be ready to process external messages (events). The problem is clear: at first time it was built as a simple prototype and it was not stress tested and all was fine. Then application was grown: the number of calls to server and number of events from server are high and performance is low. What is more users noticed that sometimes performance is extremal low. Asynchronous invocations based on thread pool (BeginInvoke, EndInvoke), external events are going from WCF service (.NET 3.5). My goal is synchronization of all tasks and putting priorities to every executions in desktop application. My question is: is there any practice how to reach my goal: patterns, task priority list, others? What should I do at first, second and next times? Thanks

• It is possible to hibernate an LXC container?

  I know about lxc-freeze and lxc-unfreeze, but as I understand it, these simply pauses the container, similar to sending SIGSTOP and SIGCONT to a process. If I reboot the host, then the containers will cease to exist, right? I would really like a way to save state to persistent storage so that I could resume them at some later time, even the host is rebooted or something like that. I can achieve exactly what I want using VirtualBox by using the "Save machine state" mechanism, but if I could do it with LXC, it would be completely awesome.

  Scene Graph seems to be the most effective way of representing the game world. The game world usually tends to be as large as the memory and device can handle. In contrast, the screen of the device captures only a fraction of the Game World/Scene Graph. Ideally, I wish to process(update and render) only the visible game objects/nodes on per-frame basis. My question therefore is, how to traverse the scene graph so, that I will focus only on the game notes that are in the camera frustum? How to organize data so that I can easily focus only on the scene graph nodes visible to me? What are techniques to minimize scenegraph traversal time? Is there such way as more effective traversal, or do I have to traverse whole scene graph on per-frame basis?

• Five new junior developers and lots of complex tasks. What's now?

  Our company has hired five new junior developers to help me to developer our product. Unfortunately the new features and incoming bug fixes usually require deeper knowledge than a recently graduated developer usually has (threading/concurrency, debugging performance bottlenecks in a complex system, etc.) Delegating (and planning) tasks which they (probably) can solve, answering their questions, mentoring/managing them, reviewing their code use up all of my time and I often feel that I could solve the issues less time than the whole delegating process takes (counting only my time). In addition I don't have time to solve the tasks which require deeper system knowledge/more advanced skills and it does not seem that it will change in the near future. So, what's now? What should I do to use their and my time effectively?

• How do I simulate overprinting in Adobe Reader?

  On both Mac and Windows when I print a document there is an advanced screen that allows me to select an option called Simulate Overprinting, however such an option doesn't appear on the Ubuntu version. Wikipedia on overprinting: Overprinting refers to the process of printing one colour on top of another in reprographics. This is closely linked to the reprographic technique of 'trapping'. Another use of overprinting is to create a rich black (often regarded as a colour that is "blacker than black") by printing black over another dark colour. This is an issue for us, as we're trying to print documents that need flattening (this is what overprinting does). Am I missing something here, is there a way to enable overprinting on printed PDFs? Note: Please don't confuse simulate overprinting with overprint preview, of which doesn't apply when printing. Just to show you what I'm looking for, this is the Print > Advanced screen... And this is what I see on the Ubuntu screen, not no option for overprinting

• Dual Monitor results in 'greyed' windows

  This occurs in Maverick and Natty. Single screen is fine, mirror of single screen is fine. If the mirror box is unchecked and the second monitor is turned on to extend the desktop then all windows are greyed out (like they do when a process has timed out and is unresponsive) and pop up menus are greyed out but icons, panels and background are fine and the windows do operate (just can't see them well enough to use) I have a D620 with intel graphics. This machine did work with dual monitors at some time in the past, however I have been using another machine, a D630 with nvidia and it works fine. Yes, there have been any number of updates. I also upgraded from Maverick to Natty to see if it would go away. No joy. Also, the D620 has a dual boot windows system and the windows xp system works fine with daul monitors There is a forum thread that goes into more detail and there are a number of users experiencing this problem.   People have been curious if there would be cross-browser compatibility for extensions due to Opera’s recent switch to the browser engine that Google Chrome uses. • DNS for domain shows old website for www version

  I bought 2 domains form GoDaddy but with both I am seeing the same problems in that the domain on the www version goes to the old site which is still being hosted. I have checked the IntoDNS website and in the www record it shows: Your www.example.com A record is: www.example.com -> example.typepad.com -> cname-cloudflare.typepad.com -> What can I do to stop this from happening? Will this eventually be automatically removed and fix itself? Though obviously it's not automatically fixed itself in the long drawn out expiry process... It's been quite a while for one of them and still hasn't propagated for the www. I'm not having any problems with the normal example.com part of the site.
