  • Is it okay to store user data in XML files?

    - by rity
I have an app that is being used by a few users (< 12 users). There are less than 2000 records so I decided to use an XML file and store the file under \company\product\p.xml. Is this okay or am I breaking some design guidelines without realizing it? EnvironmentL .net/c#/winforms

    - by TJ
I work for an ecommerce company, and we're gearing up to make some updates to our warehouse system. During a meeting we were asked if there are any viable solutions available that could be integrated into our current systems. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions, or experiences they could share. Typical requirements: inventory management pick and pack shipping integration with USPS and UPS returns returns Thanks in advanced

  • Can you suggest some UI related flex 3 interview questions for a senior pos?

    - by mohan talluri
Our Company is looking for a sr.flex developer. As part of interview process customized UI understanding and implementation is also included. I am Usability&design Lead for the same product team have some understanding of flex 3 but am not sure if pure UI/usability questions can be answered by flex developer. So can you suggest some UI related questions to see if he/she has competency to refer a prototype(html/mockup's) and build the same UI in flex.

  • Hardest concept to grasp as a beginner

    - by noizetoys
When you were starting to program, what was the hardest concept for you to grasp? Was it recursion, pointers, linked lists, assignments, memory management? I was wondering what gave you headaches and how you overcame this issue and learned to love the bomb, I mean understand it. EDIT: As a followup, what helped you grok your hard-to-grasp concept?

  • Faster code with another compiler

    - by Andrei
I'm using the standard gcc compiler in math software development with C-language. I don't know that much about compilers or compiler options, and I was just wondering, is it possible to make faster executables using another compiler or choosing better options? The default Makefile sets options -ffast-math and -O3 and I think both of them have some impact in the overall calculation time. My software is using memory quite extensively, so I imagine some options related to memory management might do the trick? Any ideas?

  • Semantic #region usage

    - by Luca
What's your opinion about using #region folding using application semantic, instead of folding for "syntax". For example: #region Application Loop #region User Management #region This Kinf of stuffs instead of #region Private Routines #region Public Properties #region ThisRoutine // (Yes, I've seen this also!) In this logic, I'm starting fold even routine bodies. I'm starting to love #region directive (even using #pragma region when using C++!).

  • iPhone Application failing to come back from sigkill

    - by overscore
I have no idea if this is intended behaviour, but whenever the application exits (say, the user is double-clicking the home button and pressing on the red dash on the icon) I get the dreaded SIGKILL. Now, when I try to launch the app again all I get is the old screen state and a frozen (I presume ?) program. It could be because of clunky memory management, but NSZombieEnabled doesn't seem to agree. Any thoughts ?

  • How do I display new products AUTOMATICALLY on the Magento home-page?

    - by Atriya
I need to display 3 or so new products automatically on the Magento home-page. This means the administrator should NOT have to mark the product as new using the 'New from Date' and 'New to Date' attributes in the 'General' tab. I know how to create a separate category containing new products automatically (http://www.tridian.com/developer-blog/adding-new-arrivals-to-magento/), but how do I display them on the home page?

  • C# or windows equivalent of OS X's Core Data?

    - by Nektarios
I'm late to the boat and have only just now started using Core Data in OS X / Cocoa - it's incredible and is really changing the way I look at things. Is there an equivalent technology in C# or the modern Windows frameworks? i.e. having managed data types where you get saving, data management, deleting, searching all for free? Also wondering if there's anything like this on Linux.

  • When is `x IS NOT NULL` not the same as `NOT(x IS NULL)`

    - by Mark Hurd
For what x is The expression x IS NOT NULL is not equal to NOT(x IS NULL), as is the case in 2VL (quote from this answer, which is quoting Fabian Pascal Practical Issues in Database Management - A Reference for the Thinking Practitioner -- near the end of that answer) My guess is when x IS NULL is NULL, but I cannot guess when that would be (i.e. I haven't checked the SQL standard).

  • Recommend ONE favorite SSIS component that does SFTP/FTPS

    - by Kevin Fairchild
Sometimes normal FTP doesn't quite cut it... When you need to do secure FTP via SSIS packages, what ONE product would you recommend? Before answering, please see if someone has already suggested the same thing and, if so, vote it up. NOTE: Ideally, it needs to handle both SSH and SSL FTP connections, but I'd consider two separate components if it makes the most sense....

  • Is it a good practice to always use smart pointers ?

    - by Dony Borris
Hi, I find smart pointers to be a lot more comfortable than raw pointers. So is it a good idea to always use smart pointers? ( Please note that I am from Java background and hence don't much like the idea of explicit memory management. So unless there are some serious performance issues with smart pointers, I'd like to stick with them. ) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Explaining your system to a client

    - by Sir Graystar
I'm currently developing a small Database Management System for a local company. How would you go about explaining how the system you have designed to a client? If they are non-technical and have no understanding of programming, how would you go about showing what the system will do and how it will do it? I guess some sort of visual representation of the system but this seems very patronising to me.
