• Images from remote source - is it possible or is really a bad practice?

  I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries that I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since images might need good deals of space depending on how much images a user uploads an so on, I thought on using cloud services like dropbox, mega and google drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem is that for me this seems a useless solution because it would be slow to download the images from the remote source, making the user experience not so good. Is there any way to save images of a image gallery on remote source without getting the user experience bad because of speed? Or this is really not a good practice?

• What should be the correct ownership of /tmp /var /usr and subdirectories?

  For some reason I think the permissions of those were messed up from a small amount of disk corruption I had. This may be a dupe, I don't know but I googled it and didn't find any mention of it. I need to know how the permissions of them should be set up as currently my computer can't actually use the tmp directory and I can't download anything consequently. I have access to the recovery mode command line but while in sudo user prompts it doesn't seem to work correctly. Also something is wrong with package management and I get dpkg: error: unable to access dpkg status area: read-only file system. I know my system is really messed up but I don't want to have to reinstall AGAIN.

• Mouse and keyboard focus problem

  I have two Chrome windows side by side. I click a link in window#1, ok. Now I want to switch to window#2 and click anywhere in the window. Noting happens. Sometimes the cursor switch to make-bigger-window style. If I click in the top part of current window. And then in the top part of next window I can switch focus so the other window works. Another problem is that the keyboard focus can get stuck in one window. I can click on things in one window but when using the keyboard it will change the first window. Only by closing the window that has the focus, it will release keyboard. What is this madness? Another problem not related is that sometimes I get logged out. Just like that.

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome Classic (no effects) and because of the fact that some system options have disappeared with the new system release I've been struggling with this for a while and despite this seems very easy I can't do this :/ - does anyone know how to choose a GDM Theme? I'm quite sure that GDM is now in use on my Ubuntu - I set it up with: sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm Despite I moved the theme folder to /usr/share/gdm/themes nothing has changed by now, I've logged out and in a couple of times but everytime I get the standard log in window and wallpaper (different from mine). So I'll appreciate any kind of help from anybody, now I have absolutely no idea how to figure it out. Cheers.

• Is it legal to develop a game usung some version of D&D, something similar to Baldurs Gate?

  For a while now I've been thinking about trying my hand at creating a game similar in spirit and execution to Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and offshoots. I'd rather not face the full bulk of work in implementing my own RPG system - I'd like to use D&D rules. Now, reading about the subject it seems there is something called "The License" which allows a company to brand a game as D&D. This license seems to be exclusive, and let's just say I don't have the money to buy it :p. Is it still legal for me to implement and release such a game? Commercially or open-source? I'm not sure exactly which edition would fit the best, but since Baldurs Gate is based of 2nd edition, could I go ahead an implement that? in short: what are the issues concerning licensing and publishing when it comes to D&D?   Possible Duplicate: How do I upgrade to the development release (aka. Ubuntu+1)? I was suggested these commands when I searched for it on Google: sudo sed -i 's/precise/quantal/g' /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade But, I don't know whether that works or not. So my question is: How to upgrade 12.04 to the 12.10 daily build? How to rollback to 12.04 if the daily build breaks? You might ask me why I want to try something like that... it's probably because I want to check out all the new upgrades that have been done in quantal. Another bonus question: If I select the "precise-proposed" updates in Update Manager, how close will my 12.04 come off to the 12.10? Are these precise proposed updates same as "quantal-proposed"? What are the differences?

  I'm building a website for a student organization I am involved in at my college. Most of the site will be static - i.e. won't change from year-to-year, but certain pieces will. I am high-tech, but most of the others aren't, and I am graduating in the spring. So how should I go about building the website so as to allow those that take over in subsequent years to edit information? Examples: Events: I already plan on using a Google calendar for this Officers: There will be profiles/pictures for all the officers on the web page Connections: Partnerships with other organizations that we have currently, but may not in future, or may add more in future Should I use some form of CMS (Content Management System)? If so, how restrictive are they (e.g. Drupal) to what you can build and then how easy is it to edit. What other ways could I make a very nice-looking website but allow certain pieces to be edited later?

It is a content-heavy news site around products that I hope to eventually build into a more comprehensive authority for the [keyword] industry I'm covering w/ B2B services, merchandise, etc. The current domain is a bit generic & I think the new one will be more marketable. Relevant stats: 320k-350k pv's/month Google brings in 39% and Yahoo/Bing 4% of traffic 10-11% of monthly search strings contains " news" SEOMoz Open Site Explorer stats: Page authority: 65/100 Domain authority: 58/100 Linking root domains: 226 Total links: 35,700 I am familiar with what I need to do as far as 301 redirects, etc. I was assuming that I'd be ok after following Google's recommended procedures but now I am not so sure.

• No sound in World of Goo?

  I installed WorldOfGooSetup.1.41.deb and it didn't work. There was a segmentation fault error (core dumped) in terminal. I fixed that with: sudo cp /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libvorbis.so.* /opt/WorldOfGoo/libs32 sudo cp /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libvorbis.so.* /opt/WorldOfGoo/libs64 That error is new for me as I have never had it before with previous releases of Ubuntu. The game starts now but no sound effects or music is played. I can hear music with my computer, videos, etc, so it is not a volume control problem. I am using ubuntu 12.04 final release.

  When I installed Ubuntu Server 12.04, I selected the ethernet adapter because I will use that most often; however, I would like to use wifi sometimes as well. The error message said something along the lines of rfkill but I'm not connected to the Internet to download that particular program. Any help here would be great

• MySQL prevents server from booting unless password is entered

  I am kind of new with Ubuntu but I have been working on setting up a LAMP server with hamachi as a vpn client for management. The issue is that when we turn the server on or restart it we are required to enter the MySQL password before it will continue. Where can we script a password or disable this? • Drawing line from sprite with a touch

  I am working with cocos2d for the iPhone and I have a question about how to implement the following. I have a circle shaped sprite on my layer. When I touch the sprite and move my finger a line must be drawn from the sprite to where my finger is. When I move my finger on the screen the line must follow (straight line). When I release my finger the line should disappear. In a good looking way I should be able to restyle the line into an arrow. Can anyone move me in the right direction for this ? Kind regards

• nVidia GT 220 not working properly with Ubuntu 12.10

  I used to enable proprietary nVidia drivers on every previous Ubuntu release to get it working properly (elseway I was forced to a very low resolution and no graphic acceleration), and everything worked fine then. In particular, I noticed - still I don't know why - that the GPU fan on every OS gets noisy until the video drivers are loaded (runlevel 5, it seems, in Linux), and then slows down to a normal speed. Today I installed 12.10. Running the Live CD, surprisingly, everything was working fine: full resolution, acceleration, silent fan, and so on. The running driver was nvidia-current (GT 216). After installing and booting I found that the fan was overrunning. The installed driver is nouveau. I tried installing nvidia-current, or any other proprietary driver, even installing the kernel headers & source and then the drivers (as suggested here), but all I'm getting with proprietary drivers is, the irony, low resolution, noisy fan and no acceleration (thus obviously unity and compiz refusing to start). Does anybody know a way out?
