• Web Platform Installer issues deploying Azure SDK 1.4 on refreshed systems.

  Recently I have been doing quite a bit of testing on different means to deploy the Azure SDKs and such. After a very successful couple of systems, I started running into issues last night. Here is the problem, if I go to the Windows Azure Website, and go to Develop, then click on the SDK and Tools, then Get Tools & SDK, it launches the Web Platform Installer.  All seems well at that point, except it will go through the initial process, will find the SDK files for 1.4, but since the tools for Visual Studio are still 1.3, the location throws back a 404, which causes the Installer to fail.  NOTE:If you already had SDK 1.3 and the tools in place, it will go through. • What you do to restrict yourself from browsing internet unnecessarily?

  I find myself browsing internet all the time and most of the time unnecessarily. I do find some interesting stuffs, learn something new daily. But I think most of the time I browse internet without any purpose. When I finish my basic tasks such as checking email, reading couple of news and browsing stackoverflow, I either go to Digg or Stumble through different sites and I find myself lost. • Game maps with "counties" that are split along lines that aren't necessarily straight

  I want to create a game environment that supports a 2D map. This is a really basic map, but must be split along lines that are not necessarily straight. So imagine a country with county boundaries. I then want to be able to detect drag / drop events within these counties. What I'm really looking for here is a pointer to where to start on this (how it has been done before - any existing libraries out there), as I'm sure that what I'm trying to do is not new - although I can't find a beginners guide for this anywhere.

• How can I work out how many IP addresses there are in a given range?

  I'm wondering if there is a formula to work out the amount of IP addresses in a given range. I have a system that takes either a single IP address or a start and and end IP address: A single one might be: 145.16.23.241 A range might be: 145.16.23.122 - 145.16.23.144 The people inputting these aren't technical, nor are they receiving these details from technical people, so suggesting using CIDR notation isn't an answer for me. I want to be able to highlight that when entering a range such as: 122.100.10.12 - 128.10.200.140 it might not actually be a range and rather 2 singular IP addresses since such a range would comprise of x (large number of) IP addresses. Is there a basic formula to help me highlight this?

• Software to create a video slideshow?

  I have a bunch of pictures I'd like to make into a basic slideshow, as a video (e.g. mpeg/avi). What software is available to do this? I started using PiTiVi based on recommendation in another question, which seemed nice at first. However, it's very unstable - just crashed my whole system! Regardless, it won't let me do anything over 10 seconds because the timeline keeps jumping back to the start any time I try and move/resize a clip. All I need is to fade between some images. Anything out there?

But coming from basic TDD background, what I used to was, first write unittest for database models write test for views (at this point start with integration test as well, along with unittests) write more integration tests for testing UI stuff. What would be a correct way to approach BDD. Say I have a simple blog application. Given : When a user logs in. He should be shown list of all his posts. • Sensor based vs. AABB based collision

  I'm trying to write a simple collision system, which will probably be primarily used for 2D platformers, and I've been planning out an AABB system for a few weeks now, which will work seamlessly with my grid data structure optimization. I picked AABB because I want a simple system, but I also want it to be perfect. Now, I've been hearing a lot lately about a different method to handle collision, using sensors, which are placed in the important parts of the entity. I understand it's a good way to handle slopes, better than AABB collision. The thing is, I can't find a basic explanation of how it works, let alone a comparison of it and the AABB method. If someone could explain it to me, or point me to a good tutorial, I'd very much appreciate it, and also a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the two techniques would be nice.

• So with HTML5 what exactly.....is "supposed" to become phased out.

  So I know HTML5 is the "replacement" for Flash...however it's obviously not mainstream just yet......but what else is it supposed to replace. I ask this because web-dev has always been a secret kinda side-passion of mine (even though I a firmware programmer mostly doing C/Java stuff). And anyway I want to pursue a side thing at doing web design (I know basic XHTML/CSS + some CSS3) But what exactly is I guess...."pointless" to study? JavaScript I assume will always be a huge part of web design? (HTML5 isn't replacing that is it?) What about Ajax and CSS itself?) And then there's Flash....not sure if thats really worth putting effort into? Also there's Adobe Flex/Air......I'm a bit confused if you can't tell.

  Style Cop 4.4.0 is now out. This is a free download from http://stylecop.codeplex.com/ (please note the new location). This version is for VS2010. If you are usign an older version of Visual Studio you be prepared to keep to an older release like 4.3.0. The more I use StyleCop the more I like it. Code that is style cop compliant is much easier to pick up. It helps if you have GhostDoc (free) and Resharper (from jetBrains.Com)

  I'm trying to learn more about implementing basic SEO strategies and have been spending a lot of time refining my keywords using Google Analytics combined with manually checking them using Google's allintitle operator. However, I'm unclear on whether I should be using quotes with my allintitles. Example: allintitle: seo tips and tricks for beginners 191 results allintitle: "seo tips and tricks for beginners" 70 results My thought is that it would be more accurate to use it without quotes because that way you get a more well rounded idea of all those you are competing with. So, my question is does Google give more weight to exact matches in the title tag or does that not really matter? If someone searched for: seo tips and tricks for beginners, would they be more likely to see the ones that have that exact phrase in their title tag or does that not have any impact?

  We have a asp.net MVC web service framework for serving out xml/json for peoples Get requests but are struggling to figure out the best way (fast, easy, trivial for users coding with javascript or OO languages) to authenticate users. It's not that our data is sensitive or anything, we just want users to register so we can have their email address to notify them of changes and track usage. In our previous attempt we had the username in the URI and would just make sure that username existed and increment db tables with usage. This was super basic but we'd notice people using demo as a username etc so we need it to be a little more sophisticated. What authentication techniques are available? • Am I getting paid a reasonable wage for web engineering?

  I've been doing some research and it looks like most people in my line of work - WEB ENGINEERING/WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - that get paid hourly, make anywhere from $30-80 an hour for their work. With that said, I have SEVEN years of experience with web development including OOP-PHP, MySQL, jQuery, OOP-JS, interface design, ajax, database architecture, etc. I am also very strong with visual design and workflow - thus, I've made some really high quality interactive interfaces. I also have a lot of experience with Zend Framework, Symfony, Wordpress, Drupal, etc and a really strong portfolio to show for it. Here's the catch: I'm 20 years old, haven't graduated from college yet (I'm doing part time school and ~30 hours a week of web development.) But I've literally been doing web apps since I was 13 years old. So my question is: is $14 an hour a reasonable starting wage for working at a company part time?

• OpenGL Get Rotated X and Y of quad

  I am developing a game in 2D using LWJGL library. So far I have a rotating box. I have done basic Rectangle collision, but it doesn't work for rotated rectangles. Does OpenGL have a function that returns the vertices of rotated rectangle? Or is there another way of doing this using trigonometry? I had researched how to do this and everything I found was using some matrix that I don't understand so I am asking if there is another way of doing this. For clarification, I am trying to find out the true (rotated) X,Y of each point of the rectangle. Let's say, the first point of a rectangle (top,left) has x=10 y=10.. Width and height is 100 pixels. When I rotate the rectangle using glRotatef() the x and y stay the same. The rotation is happening inside OpenGL. I need to extract the x,y of the rectangle so I can detect collisions properly.

• How can I change my "Desktop bar"?

  The problem: In Gnome 3.4 when I click the main menu, it's white. The text of the menu is also white. Original text: I have a problem. When I installed the new version of Gnome (3.4) the "Desktop bar" (I'm sorry, I don't know what's the real name of that bar, but is the bar on the top on Ubuntu 11.10) every time I click on the username icon, or the battery, etc., the menu comes on gray or white and the letters are white. I know maybe this is a stupid question but it annoys me. Besides, my username doest not appear on the login screen. I tried to reset my settings, I delete gnome, and check the Unsettings and CompizConfig but the problem is still there. Maybe I miss something on the process of looking on any configuration tool but I don't think so... Sorry if the question is something basic or even stupid but I'm new on Ubuntu and I'm experimenting whit it.

• No idea of how to simulate car crashes

  I have a simple car game with all the basic collision detection and movement in Unity with C#. But when I was building the "engine" for the game I didn't include a detail I later decided to include. I want the possibility so that cars can get damaged and so that the model can change. For example the car looked like it was new and after a crash it looks like a wreck. Please help me by pointing to some resources or by telling me approximate ways of implementing this new feature.
