  • Software for watching TV.

    - by D Connors
So, I just got a new ENUTV-2 USB TV Tuner Box, and it works fine overall. The driver seems to be OK, but the utility provided by encore doesn't seem to be working 100% in win 7. The only real issue is that I can't mute it, or change the volume level. So I'd like to know: Is there good (free) software out there for watching TV? Thanks

  • How to get Google Chrome on my TV for under $100

    - by pattern86
How can I get the Google Chrome web browser on my TV for under $100? ($200 MAX) I have a TV with HDMI and component inputs (but no bluetooth so firmware modding is out.) I want the solution to work with bluetooth peripherals--I already have a wireless Apple keyboard and Magic Mouse. I don't want a laptop or a desktop computer, unless it's in the general form factor of an HTPC or Mac Mini. Is there a way to make this happen?

  • Apple TV photo fail

    - by Tony
I just bought the new (2nd gen) Apple TV. Everything works beautifully, except for Photos. I have 25,000 pictures on my computer, which creates 3 issues with Apple TV 1) It takes roughly an HOUR to load my photos, every time! (if I navigate anywhere else, its has to reload all over again next time) 2) It condenses all of my folders-sub-folders-sub-sub-folders into just the top folder. Having only 5 top folders with 5,000 pictures each is pretty much useless. 3) It has an artificial cap of 20,000 pictures, after which it won’t load more. The first two are the big ones, since they pretty much make the product unusable. I have called apple support (they just said “sorry…too bad”), and have checked all the online forums I can. Also it is definitely not a connection issue, as it streams HD Netflix movies with ease. Does anyone else here have this issue, and/or hopefully some solutions?

  • EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) at random during use of app. Bug in AppKit?

    - by Ger Teunis
    I'm currently testing a new version of an app of mine on OSX 10.5 An user reported some weird crashes during use of the application, sadly not reproducible by me. At first sight it seems to happen randomly, once he had the crash while opening an NSOpenPanel and once during focusing an NSTextField and once during NSView switch in a parent view. If you have any idea which area I should look at it would be greatly appreciated! I'm completely lost here. App is compiled in XCode 3.2.1 with SDK 10.5 and targetted at 10.5 He send me these crashes: Crash 1 Process: NZBVortex [43622] Path: /Users/cero/Downloads/NZBVortex.app/Contents/MacOS/NZBVortex Identifier: com.NZBVortex.NZBVortex Version: 0.5.5 (0.5.5) Code Type: X86-64 (Native) Parent Process: launchd [97] Interval Since Last Report: 1951 sec Crashes Since Last Report: 1 Per-App Interval Since Last Report: 1858 sec Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 1 Date/Time: 2010-03-23 23:43:49.671 +0100 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a) Report Version: 6 Anonymous UUID: 98AB0386-590B-4E0D-B7AC-3F7AA4E7238E Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Application Specific Information: objc[43622]: alt handlers in objc runtime are buggy! - Hide quoted text - Thread 0 Crashed: 0 libobjc.A.dylib 0x00007fff82baef6e _objc_fatal + 238 1 libobjc.A.dylib 0x00007fff82bb2ea4 objc_addExceptionHandler + 302 2 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x00007fff842b1090 _CFDoExceptionOperation + 528 3 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff81f75e26 _NSAppKitLock + 81 4 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff81f80f8f -[NSView nextKeyView] + 56 5 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff81f81018 -[NSView _primitiveSetNextKeyView:] + 72 6 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff820732b1 -[NSView _recursiveSetDefaultKeyViewLoop] + 242 7 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff82073300 -[NSView _recursiveSetDefaultKeyViewLoop] + 321 8 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff82073300 -[NSView _recursiveSetDefaultKeyViewLoop] + 321 9 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff82073300 -[NSView _recursiveSetDefaultKeyViewLoop] + 321 10 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff82073300 -[NSView _recursiveSetDefaultKeyViewLoop] + 321 11 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff82072fc3 -[NSView _setDefaultKeyViewLoop] + 279 12 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff82072e70 -[NSWindow recalculateKeyViewLoop] + 36 13 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff821dd149 -[NSSavePanel(NSSavePanelRuntime) _loadPreviousModeAndLayout] + 39 14 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff821dcf9e -[NSSavePanel(NSSavePanelRuntime) runModalForDirectory:file:types:] + 71 15 com.NZBVortex.NZBVortex 0x000000010000b7ee -[MainWindowViewController openNZBFileButtonClick:] + 62 16 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff821c96bf -[NSToolbarButton sendAction:to:] + 77 17 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff821c8bb7 -[NSToolbarItemViewer mouseDown:] + 5362 18 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff82082783 -[NSWindow sendEvent:] + 5068 19 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff8204fd46 -[NSApplication sendEvent:] + 5089 20 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff81faa562 -[NSApplication run] + 497 21 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff81f772f0 NSApplicationMain + 373 22 com.NZBVortex.NZBVortex 0x0000000100012a69 main + 9 23 com.NZBVortex.NZBVortex 0x0000000100001a84 start + 52 Crash 2 Process: NZBVortex [43600] Path: /Users/cero/Downloads/NZBVortex.app/Contents/MacOS/NZBVortex Identifier: com.NZBVortex.NZBVortex Version: 0.5.5 (0.5.5) Code Type: X86-64 (Native) Parent Process: launchd [97] Interval Since Last Report: 727 sec Crashes Since Last Report: 1 Per-App Interval Since Last Report: 616 sec Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 1 Date/Time: 2010-03-23 23:11:20.000 +0100 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a) Report Version: 6 Anonymous UUID: 98AB0386-590B-4E0D-B7AC-3F7AA4E7238E Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Application Specific Information: objc[43600]: alt handlers in objc runtime are buggy! • HDMI Audio stops after TV turned off

    - by Ryan
After the 12.04 Update my HDMI audio stops working anytime I turn off my 2nd monitor(plasma TV). Graphics card is a Radeon 6800 which has DVI out to 1st monitor, HDMI out to receiver which the TV gets it's Audio/Video. Audio is always via my receiver sound. Things work fine as long as it boots with the TV and Receiver on. Turn off the TV and BART's HDMI audio will go away, and the HDMI option vanishes from the sound menu. I had an occasional HDMI issue with 11.10 but turning on/off the TV would fix the sound. How can I hardcode things so that it always uses HDMI out of audio? I suspect the TV is sending a signal upon that 12.04 is now listening for. Turning the TV back on does NOT resolve this, and I'd suggest having the ability to override this new "feature" via sound menu.

  • Apple IIe Software Disks

    - by Mike Grace
I just got a working Apple IIe but I don't have any system or software disks. I did some searches on Google to look for sources for disks but haven't been able to find many resources that I could actually buy disks from. What are some good places to purchase disks for my Apple IIe? Are there some good groups on the web where others are using and restoring Apple IIes?

  • What makes an Apple hard drive special?

    - by Michael Shnitzer
The Mac Pro has a specific hard drive for sale in the Apple Store for $549.00. The drive has the following specs: Serial ATA 3GB per second 7200 RPM Amazon has a hard drive with the same specs for $169.99. The only difference I can tell is that the Apple hard drive label says it has "Apple HDD Firmware". What exactly is the benefit of this firmware and is there something I am missing that make up for the price difference in these two drives? Update: My initial comparison between the two drive was unfair. Apparently 2TB drives that are 3 GB/S and 7200 RPM are quiet a bit more than $169.99. Dell has a 2 TB SATA Caviar Black from Western Digital that is $319.99, which is closer to Apple's price.

  • Media Center - TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second

    - by Bob
I have a problem watching TV in Media Center. The TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second, pauses 1/2 second, plays 1 second - it is constant and does not vary. I know the problem is Media Center because I can use Pinnacle's TVCenterPro and there is no skipping/pausing. I was using cable, and switched to DirecTV (satellite). Trying to do "Set up TV signal" in Media Center seems to be what broke it. I get an error "IR Hardware not detected." I can use the remote to "try again" - so the IR hardware works fine (Media Center's remote/sensor). I tried plugging the IR Blaster into both ports, and I tried a different USB port for the IR receiver. I can't complete the setup. Media Center was playing it okay before I tried to run setup. (I ran setup to try to do recording with Media Center.) Pinnacle PCTV 800i HD PCI card, ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, AMD Athlon Dual Core 2.5 GHz, 1.75 GB RAM.

  • PCI Tv Tuner not receiving signal

    - by C-dizzle
I inherited an Angel II PCI Dual TV Tuner card, popped it into my computer's PCI slot, plugged in my coax cable, but am having trouble getting any type of signal to it. The computer I am using is Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, I know the card works because the computer recognizes it and installs the drivers, or at least I assume it works because of that. I'm trying to use Windows Media Center to watch/record tv. Here are a few things I have tried to get it working: Uninstalled/Reinstalled the newest drivers Tried hooking up an antenna to the coax input instead of my cable Instead of using cable splitter, went directly from wall output into card with coax cable Tried using different output on splitter in case the out port was bad I haven't tried a different coax cable yet, it should be fine since it's pretty new. Since this is my first time setting up a TV Tuner card, is there anything specific that I need to do with it? Is there any configuration that needs to be done on it? Do I need to have a digial receiver? I was getting pretty frustrated with it so I wanted to turn here to the experts, I'm sure someone can help me figure it out.

  • Evolution Of High Definition TV Viewing

    - by Gopinath
The following guest post is written by Rob, who is also blogging on entertainment technology topics on iwantsky.com Gone are the days when you need to squint to be able to see the emotions on the faces of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman as the lovers bid each other adieu in the classic film Casablanca. These days, watching an ordinary ant painstakingly carry a leaf in Animal Planet can be an exhilarating experience as you get to see not only the slightest movement but also the demarcation line between the insect’s head, thorax and abdomen. The crystal clear imagery was made possible by the sharp minds and the tinkering hands of the scientists that have designed the modern world’s HDTV. What is HDTV and what makes people so agog to have this new innovation in TV watching? HDTV stands for High Definition TV. Television viewing has indeed made a big leap. From the grainy black and whites, TV viewing had moved to colored TVs, progressed to SD TVs and now to HDTV. HDTV is the emerging trend in TV viewing as it delivers bigger and clearer pictures and better audio. Viewers can have a cinema-like TV viewing experience right in the comforts of their own home. With HDTV the viewer is allowed to have a better viewing range. With Standard (SD) TV, the viewer has to be at a distance that is from 3 to 6 times the size of the screen. HDTV allows the viewer to enjoy sharper and clearer images as it is possible to sit at a distance that is 1.5 or 3 times the size of the screen without noticing any image pixilation. Although HDTV appears to be a fairly new innovation, this system has actually existed in various forms years ago. Development of the HDTV was started in Europe as early as 1940s. However, the NTSC and the PAL/SECAM, the two analog TV standards became dominant and became popular worldwide. The analog TV was replaced by the digital TV platform in the 1990s. Even during the analog era, attempts have been made to develop HDTV. Japan has come out with MUSE system. However, due to channel bandwidth requirement concerns, the program was shelved. The entry of four organizations into the HDTV market spurred the development of a beneficial coalition. The AT&T, ATRC, MIT and Zenith HDTV combined forces. In 1993, a Grand Alliance was formed. This group is composed of researchers and HDTV manufacturers. A common standard for the broadcast system of HDTV was developed. In 1995, the system was tested and found successful. With the higher screen resolution of HDTV, viewing has never been more enjoyable. • Blurry Digital TV Signal in Media Center

    - by hazmat
I recently reformatted my box and I reinstalled XP Media Center 2005. My TV signal is perfect if I plug it directly into the tv; and at any rate even shows I recorded previous to the reformat are blury. I have installed all updates (including Media Player 11) and I have installed a codec pack for different file types. I have no clue why it wouldn't display right. When I play the previously recorded shows in VLC they come out perfectly clear... Any ideas?

  • Configure TV Capture card to not use external audio jack for TV audio output

    - by Adam D.
I had this working with MythTV on Ubuntu 9.1. Then a power surge killed the motherboard. After replacing the motherboard, ram and cpu, the card does not produce any audio except through the output jack on the back of the card. I do not want to use a cable to go from the back of the card to the audio in on the built in sound card of the new mother board. FYI, the old motherboard did not have an on-board sound card. There was a separate audio card installed. There's some configuration that has to be done to have it work the same way again. I just have no idea where to start. • Steve Jobs Proposes New Apple Campus. It’s As Beautiful As An iPad.

    - by Gopinath
After the launch of iOS 5, OS X Lion and iCloud Steve Jobs proposed Apple’s plans for construction of a new campus in Cupertino. In a presentation to Cupertino City Council, Steve proposed to construct a spaceship style beautiful building that can house 12000 employees. Apple recently purchased 150 acres of land from HP and others in Cupertino and this land will be used for their new campus. The architectural design of the new campus looks awesome just like their products: iPad / iPhone. It’s a four storied circular building with all curved glasses that can accommodate 12000 employees.,  “We do have a shot at building the best office building in the world,” Jobs told the Council members, “Architecture students will come here to see this.”. The facility is going to be eco-friendly with 80% of landscaping with most of the parking going to underground. The current campus has 3700 trees and Apple is planning to increase them to 6000 trees. The campus will be powered with its own renewable energy source and electric grid as backup. Steve described It’s a pretty amazing building. It’s a little like a spaceship landed. It’s got this gorgeous courtyard in the middle… It’s a circle. It’s curved all the way around. If you build things, this is not the cheapest way to build something Check out the embedded video of Steve Jobs at the City Council meeting An Apple Fan boy quickly photoshopped the new campus to something more interesting This article titled,Steve Jobs Proposes New Apple Campus. It’s As Beautiful As An iPad., was originally published at Tech Dreams. • What would be the best way to get Apple to donate their JVM-work to OpenJDK?

    - by Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
It has been announced that Apple deprecates their JVM. It is a really nice piece of work giving an excellent user experience for Swing application on OS X, and it would be a pity if it just went away. As I see it the only realistic long term alternative to Apples own JVM is the OpenJDK unless Oracle chooses to take over the Apple JVM which I doubt as OS X is not a core platform for Oracle. But for this to work Apple needs to donate their enhancements to OpenJDK, and it needs to be under the GPL. They did so already with WebKit so there is precedent. What would be the best way to make them do so? Make a stackexchange poll? Get James Gosling and other high profile Java persons to say so? Email Steve Jobs? Suggestions? EDIT: Well, Apple has now promised to do so :) Shows that asking on StackExchange really MAKES A DIFFERENCE! Great!

  • PS3 controller -> PC -> emulators -> TV

    - by abrereton
I'm researching a media PC for the living room. Playing videos, audio and streaming Internet is straightforward enough. I would also like to run a gaming console system. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this. So far I've discovered that a PS3 controller (thankfully it uses USB and Bluetooth) can be connected to a PC. I've also found that MAME, MESS and PCSX2 are all the emulators I need (I can even emulate a TI-83 calculator with MESS). These emulators can re-map keys, so for example I can make the Nintendo's A button to the PS3 X button, or the SNES key pad could be the PS3 keypad or the analog stick. There are also front-ends to these emulators which can do fancy things like image scaling, anti-aliasing and double-buffering to improve the image quality of an 8-bit Mario on a 50 inch plasma. My set up would be this: PS3 controller connecting over Bluetooth to the PC, PC with Windows, PS3 controller drivers, all my emulators, Network drive with all my ROMs, PC connected to TV via HDMI TV playing Super Mario Kart Does this sound feasible? Does anyone have experience of doing anything like this? Is this a good idea or should I grow up and stop living in the past?

  • Apple Magic Mouse on Windows XP SP3

    - by index
Using generic Windows bluetooth drivers + Apple Wireless Mouse drivers as Bluetooth HID service. The mouse is connected. It just does not do anything. It does not show up under mice in hardware manager, just as Bluetooth HID. Not using the Apple drivers does not work either. I'm using a logilink BT0007

  • Best way to clean the Apple Mighty Mouse?

    - by lostInTransit
As much as I love Apple products' designs, I still don't like the mighty mouse. The scrolling keeps stopping in between very frequently. I tried the instructions provided on Apple's site and it does make the scrolling smooth but only momentarily. Isn't there any way to open it up and clean like a normal mouse? Or any other way to clean it better?

  • Backup strategy for developer-focused Apple environments?

    - by ewwhite
It's interesting to see the technological split between structured corporate environments and more developer-driven/startup environments. Some of the Microsoft technologies I take for granted (VSS, Folder Redirection, etc.) simply are not available when managing the increasing number of Apple laptops I see in DevOps shops. I'm interested in centralized and automated backup strategies for a group of 30-40 Apple laptops... How is this typically done safely and securely, assuming these are company-owned machines (versus BYOD)? While Apple has Time Machine, it's geared toward individual computer backups and doesn't seem to work reliably in a group setting. Another issue with these workstations is the presence of Vagrant/Virtual Box VMs on the developers' systems. Time Machine and virtual machines typically don't work well unless the VMs are excluded from the backup set. I'd like a push-based backup process with some flexible scheduling options. I know how to handle the backend storage, but I'm not sure on what needs to be presented to the client systems. Due to the nature of the data here, cloud-based backup may not be a viable option. Any suggestions about how you handle this in your environment would be appreciated. Edit: The virtual machine backups are no longer important. They can be excluded from the process and planning.
