  • SQL Server compare table entries for update

    I have a trade table with several million rows. Each row represents the version of a trade. If I'm given a possibly new trade I compare it to the latest version in the trade table. If it has changed I add a new version, otherwise I do nothing. In order to compare the 2 trades I read the version from the trade table into my application. This doesn't work well when I'm given 10s of thousands of possibly new trades. Even batching reads to read in a 1000 trades at once and compare them the whole process can take several minutes. All the time is spent in the DB. I'm trying to find a way to compare the possibly new trades to the ones in the trade table without so much I/O. What I've come up with so far is adding a hash column to each row in the trade table. The hash is of all the trade fields. Then when I'm given possibly new trades I compute their hash, put the values into a temporary table, then find ones that are different. This feels very hacky. Is there a better way of doing it?     I've read that all stl containers provide a specialisation of the swap algorithm so as to avoid calling the copy constructor and two assignment operations that the default method uses. However, when I thought it would be nice to use a queue in some code I was working on I noticed that (unlike vector and deque) queue doesn't provide this method? I just decided to use a deque instead of a queue, but still I'm interested to know why this is?

Obviously, to implement a comparison it not difficult, it is enough to compare all keys and their associated values.     I've installed Ubuntu on my computer but I did a mistake during the installation and it created two swap's. In fact I had tree partitions (system, home, swap) but the installator crashed so I restarted the installation and it has installed everything in the system partition. So now I separated the home in the appropriate partition but I've two swap partitions. How can I delete one ? If I delete one, how will it go ?

    I'm trying to compare two entries in a database, so when a user makes a change, I can fetch both database entries and compare them to see what the user changed, so I would have an output similar to: User changed $fieldName from $originalValue to $newValue I've looked into this and came accross array_diff but it doesn't give me the output format I need. Before I go ahead and write a function that does this, and returns it as a nice $mtextFormatDifferenceString, can anyone point me in the direction of a solution that already does this? I don't want to re-invent the wheel..

  • How atomic is a SELECT INTO?

    Last week I got an interesting situation that prompted me to challenge a long standing assumption. I always thought that a SELECT INTO was an atomic statement, i.e. it would either complete successfully or the table would not be created. So I got very surprised when, after a “select into” query was chosen as a deadlock victim, the next execution (as the app would handle the deadlock and retry) would fail with: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 6, Line 1 There is already an object named '#test' in the database. The only hypothesis we could come up was that the “create table” part of the statement was committed independently from the actual “insert”. We can confirm that by capturing the “Transaction Log” event on Profiler (filtering by SPID0). The result is that when we run: SELECT * INTO #results FROM master.sys.objects we get the following output on Profiler: It is easy to see the two independent transactions. Although this behaviour was a surprise to me, it is very easy to workaround it if you feel the need (as we did in this case). You can either change it into independent “CREATE TABLE / INSERT SELECT” or you can enclose the SELECT INTO in an explicit transaction: SET XACT_ABORT ON BEGIN TRANSACTION SELECT * INTO #results FROM master.sys.objects COMMIT

    Windows 7 with 1gb RAM Hi. I am installing Ubuntu 12 onto a 20gb ext3 partition. I have 100gb free disk space. The install asked me to choose a swap space. Do I have to allocate another partition for the swap space, and if so, what size should it be? I installed without allocating a swap space. Can I allocate a swap space after the install? The install asked me for a mount point. I chose /. Is this okay? I also want to ensure that GRUB2 will be installed within the UBUNTU partition. Is there an option for this on the install? First, here’s how to compare: PL/SQL to PL/SQL or a SQL statement to another SQL statement So now that that’s settled, why don’t we take a look at how to compare a single table, to another table – whether it’s in the same database or a different database. Database Diff There’s no additional licensing requirement here. If you have SQL Developer, you can use this feature. if you’re going to compare 1 table to another, make sure you ONLY have ‘tables’ checked And then, use this dialog to select your table(s): Move over the object(s) you want to compare over to the right hand side. And now we can move onto the results. The differences, side-by-side, and the script to make B look like A Common lines with differences are highlighted in blue, new lines are highlighted in red. So that’s why they are different, but here’s the script to synch up the differences: Read the script, TEST the script, apply the script. And that’s it. Well, that’s mostly it.     I am trying to make an availability calender and need to know how can I compare date when fetching it. My DB is id start_date end_date status Now suppose I want to fetch booking in next month, i.e. from 2010-03-01 to 2010-04-01. How should I fetch this data ? I did try comparing directly using an and condition but it didnt help. The format in DB is yyyy-mm-dd and I used the same to compare. But direct comparison does not work.

  • Compare images to find differences

    Task: I have a camera mounted on the end of our assembly line, which captures images of produced items. Let's for example say, that we produce tickets (with some text and pictures on them). So every produced ticket is photographed and saved to disk as image. Now I would like to check these saved images for anomalies (i.e. compare them to an image (a template), which is OK). So if there is a problem with a ticket on our assembly line (missing picture, a stain,...), my application should find it (because its image differs too much from my template). Question: What is the easiest way to compare pictures and find differences between them? Do I need to write my own methods, or can I use existing ones? It would be great if I just set a tolerance value (i.e. images can differ for 1%), put both images in a function and get a return value of true or false :) Tools: C# or VB.NET, Emgu.CV (.NET wrapper for OpenCV) or something similar
