  • Completely unintuitive Apache/PHP memory-freeing behavior

    Okay, this one's weird. I have a Turnkey Linux server with a gig of dedicated RAM. It's running WP3.2 with a boatload of plug-ins. It's a new site, so it has very limited traffic (other than search engines, maybe 20 hits a week). Now, for a few weeks, every few days, it would max out on main RAM, start eating up virtual RAM, and then crash. It's had this behavior for a while and I've been trying to figure out which element was causing the crash. Nine days ago, I pointed my external server monitor to this server. I wrote a 5-line HTML file (not PHP and not WP) that the server monitor accesses every minute, to see if the server is up. So, now, nine days later, the server has been rock solid, up all the time, no memory leak at all. I changed NOTHING on the server itself to see this behavior change. Have you EVER seen anything like this? All the server monitor is doing is retrieving a single, super-simple HTML file and all the memory leak problems have gone away. Weird, eh?

When viewing this message, I've noticed that Outlook 2003 will NOT word wrap this text but Outlook 2007 will. What is the correct and expected behavior?     I have the following backup batch file: xcopy C:\test.txt \server\Data\user\"data test" /e /y /i The issue is why does it not only copy the file listed but proceeds to copy the whole root directory? When i remove the switches it only copies the file. There is nothing in the description of those switches that seems to cause the behavior... They are there because I'm picking up where someone else left and all the batch files use these 3 switches. Thanks

    I am using the d3.behavior.zoom to implement panning and zooming on a tree layout, but it is exhibiting a behavior I would describe as bouncing or numeric instability. When you start to drag, the display will inexplicably bounce left or right until it just disappears.   • Class design question (Disposable and singleton behavior)

    The Repository class has singleton behavior and the _db implements the disposable pattern. As excepted the _db object gets disposed after the first call and because of the singleton behavior any other call of _db will crash.   • Huge performance difference between two web servers, odd behavior seen using process monitor

    We have two Coldfusion servers that have a huge performance difference running the exact same code on the exact same input data. The code in questions instantiates a large amount of CFCs (Coldfusion Components, which are similar to objects in OOP languages). I compared the two servers by running Process Monitor and then calling the problematic code on both machines. I learned two things. First, Coldfusion opens CFC files every time it instantiates an object. Both servers do this, so it cannot be the cause of the performance difference. Second, the fast server opens the CFC files directly while the server with the performance problem seems to navigate its way through the path until it reaches the desired CFC file. It does this for every file, even the ones it has previously loaded, and because the code instantiates so many CFCs it becomes very slow. See below the partial Promon traces that show this behavior. It can take over 60 seconds for the slow server to do what the fast one does in 2 seconds. Can anyone tell me what causes this behavior? Is it a Coldfusion setting? Since Coldfusion runs on top of Java, is it a Java setting? Is it an OS option? The fast server is running Windows XP and I think the slow server is a Windows Server 2003. Bonus question: Coldfusion doesn't seem to perform any READ FILE operations on any of the CFC or CFM files. How can this be?   • Mimic the behavior of a machine added to a domain

    Hello, For some reason, the IT department at our company does not want to add Windows 7 and Windows Vista machine to the domain controller. I hate to always provide my network credentials everytime I access a shared folder on a machine that is joined to the domain. I also hate to always provide my password when I launch outlook or Visual Studio (Team Explorer). Is there a way to mimic the behavior of a machine that is added to a domain without actually adding the machine in the domain? For shares, I can create a batch file that will NET USE the different fileservers we use here but that is a huge security risk as I will type my password as plaintext. Thanks!

When I try to use Ctrl+Shift+/ it inserts a comment of this form: =begin My lines of code My lines of code My lines of code My lines of code My lines of code =end I would like the Ctrl+Shift+/ to be defaulted to toggle commenting with '# ' instead. I have gone to the key preferences and tried changing PyDev toggle comment to Ctrl+Shift+/ but it doesn't work. It must be picking that behavior from somewhere else. What do I need to change so that I get the IDE to behave like I want. Ted.

  • Strange 'locate' behavior and icon changing

    I'd like to change the icon of a program called Refit with a custom one. This program has various tools and when I try to change those icons all is ok but then I run the following command: $ locate refit.icns and the output is: $ /efi/refind/icons/os_refit.icns The problem is that I don't have any folder called refind and the path simply doesn't exist. I tried it with both: $ ls and $ sudo ls in the /efi directory. So my questions are actually two: how can I change the icon of that program? And why there is this strange behavior with the locate command? I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Thanks for your help.

  • Strange Windows DIR command behavior

    I discovered this quite by accident while looking for a file with a number in the name. When I type: dir *number* (where number represents any number from 0 to 9 and with no spaces between the asterisks and the number) at the cmd.exe command prompt, it returns various files do not appear in any to fit the search criteria. What's weird, is that depending on the directory, some numbers will work and not others. An example is, in a directory associated with a website, I type the following: dir *4* and what is returned is: Directory of C:\Ampps\www\includes\pages 04/30/2012 03:55 PM 153 inventory_list_retrieve.php 06/18/2012 11:17 AM 6,756 ix.html 06/19/2012 01:47 PM 257,501 jquery.1.7.1.js 3 File(s) 264,410 bytes 0 Dir(s) 362,280,906,752 bytes free That just doesn't make any sense to me. Any clue? The question is posed on stackOverflow because the DIR command is often combined with FOR in batch programs. The strange DIR behavior would seem to make batch programs potentially unreliable if they use the DIR command.

    Since I bought my iMac last year, I have a white pixel on the left of my screen. I'm ok with that, one pixel is not much and I know about dead pixels policies. My problem is about understanding this "dead" pixel. But this pixel has a strange behavior. At first, it seems to be always white, but it is actually working ok under certain conditions: the mouse pointer a contextual menu Dock icons a QuickLooks video played in fullscreen other spaces than "1" The "QuickLooks fullscreen video" and "other spaces" are the one that disturb me the most. In these modes, my pixel is working fine, so it must be a software problem since my pixel is working correctly in those modes. Any ideas?

    It seems they've put some Clippy-like behavior into Outlook 07. Assume you open an email message and open its attachment, given that you make no changes to the message or the attachment. If you close the attachment, then close the email - works as expected Close email - prompted to save changes to attachment I have some clerical users, and they tend to believe what the computer tells them. In this case, I'm having a hard time determining the reason someone determined that Outlook should lie in this case, and prompt someone to save a file that hasn't changed. Regardless, I've only been able to find examples of people failing to find a fix for this. Anyone have ideas? edit: I should have clarified, I suppose I'm looking for a workarounnd, as it's consistently reproduceable for any machine, and I suspect is therefore "working as intended"

My client initially get IP address from server A. At some stage, server A goes down. My poor client is sending REQUEST in RENEW and then REBIND state, with no response whatsoever.     Sometimes, when changing between the modes in Vim, I forget to take my finger off the Shift key. This innocent mistake is probably part of the luggage carried over from other terminals, but I have never seen my input treated this way. After changing from command mode to input mode, if I hit the Esc key while the Shift key is down, Vim will display <9b (Control Sequence Introducer) instead of switching to the command mode.     My website has an SSL cert (example url: https://subdomain.example.com). Under Apache it's set up for both port 80 and port 443. So under the following configuration, anyone who goes to http://subdomain.example.com is sent to https://subdomain.example.com . But for visits from Internet Explorer, the redirect doesn't happen. Instead, http visits get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page." with a list of client-side solutions to try. Any ideas on how to fix the config so IE visits have the same behavior as the other browsers (that is, send http to https automatically)?     I'm seeing some intermittent behavior on the touchpad. First it wasn't working at all. Then during restart, for a little while it seemed like the buttons attached to the joystick and external mouse were both swapped left/right. Then I went in to the dell touchpad control and disabled the touchpad and re-enabled it and nothing happened. Then a short while after disabling the joystick the touch pad started working. So I restarted to see if it would keep the settings and before login, the touchpad appeared to work, then after login it stopped working for a few minutes while login continued. Then after the login was almost completed it started to work again. It appeared to have retained the settings for the disabled joystick. It seems like perhaps there are conflicting mouse drivers trying to simultaneously or similar. This doesn't seem normal for the touchpad to be disabled for so long after login. What steps should I take to ensure the drivers are right?

  • Difference in behavior of reboot

    Hi, I have 2 machines running linux. In one machine, the reboot command is an executable normally found in all linux distributions. In the second machine the reboot command is a shell script customized using some other hardware tool commands to reboot the system. One behavior difference between the 2 machines is that when i execute reboot command on the first machine, it shows another shell prompt and then only reboots. But in the case of second machine, it reboots without showing a shell prompt. I expect the second machine to behave the same way as first machine when reboot command is given. Currently i am analyzing the source code of shutdown.c and halt.c normally found in linux distributions, so that i can find out the implementation which produces the shell propmt on reboot and use that in the shell script in second machine. Kindly give me some pointers on where i should start looking to find the implementation. Thanks

  • Odd FTP ASCII/BINARY transfer behavior after migrating to a new server

    I recently got a dedicated server and after migration to the new machine I started noticing problems with file transfers. My FTP client, despite being set to auto, keeps uploading php files in binary mode and the content of those files is messed up. Since I mostly upload files of different kinds it would be annoying to change from binary to ASCII every single time, beside, I never had such problems. What could be the cause of this behavior? My dedicated server runs CENTOS 6.4 and the ftp server is Pure-FTPd. I tried different FTP clients and they all have the same problem so I assume is soem misconfiguration on the server side. Thanks

    I have two windows open on the same machine (Ubuntu 9, ia32, server). I'll call these windows W1 and W2. W1: $ cd ~/test $ ls sample $ In W2 I run "make" from a parent directory that recreates file test/sample: $ make project . . $ cd test $ ls sample $ Now, returning to W1: $ ls $ cd ../test $ ls sample $ In other words, after I build from another window and the file test/sample is replaced, ls shows the file as missing in the 2nd window until I cd ../test back into the directory whereupon it reappears. I can give more details if required, but just wondering if this is a well-known behavior.
