  • SSE2 - SSE4.2 Compatibility

    Hello. I am considering the purchase of some software (AutoCAD) that requires the CPU to support SSE2. My PC's CPU is an Intel® Core™ i5-650 Processor, which supports SSE4.2. Basically what I am wondering is if SSE4.2 is simply a newer version of SSE2, so that it would be fullly backwards compatible. Thanks.

  • Converting videos to AVI with AVIDemux for compatibility

    I am trying to convert a couple of short videos to AVI (XviD) using AVIDemux. I find that while the resulting videos play fine in VLC, they do not play in an XviD DVD player (nor presumably Xbox 360, PS3, etc.). In fact, they do not even show in Windows Explorer (that is, Explorer cannot read their metadata or display thumbnails). I tried using all three of the AVI Muxer Output Format options, but none worked. Does anyone know what settings to use to produce compatible AVIs with AVIDemux? (I found an old thread where someone complained about AVIs not working on Xbox, but that was a few years ago from an older version.)

  • IBM BladeServer Chassis compatibility

    Hi, I'm looking at buying a 3 year old blade server. My question is, if I buy it and want to insert a current model blade, will it fit? Also, if the chassis goes "POP" and I need to replace it, will the current model chassis fit 3 year old blades? What about Power supply replacements? The chassis I'm looking at is this: IBM FRU / PN: M8677-3XM with DVD reader The blades are all IBM HS20's. We've had a good run with IBM hardware and although there is some nice ex-lease HP hardware available, my understanding is that backwards comparability is not so well maintained. Is this true?

    "Disable desktop composition" flag disables Aero (transparent glass border) effect for the duration of the application's run, which seems like all there is to "visual themes", but toggling the "Disable visual themes" option doesn't seem to do anything. What exactly are these "visual themes"? How does disabling them affect the system? From what I can guess, a "visual theme" is a custom window border style around window content area created using hooks and WDM API calls, though I am prepared to be corrected. I'm talking about the checked option:

  • Hard Drive Compatibility with Motherboard

    Here are the current specs to put things in context: ECS P4VXASD2+ V5.0 Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.8 GHz 2x 512MB PC2100 DDR266 SDRAM Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250 GB PATA (IDE) HDD Gigabyte 52x CD-ROM NVIDIA TNT2 Pro 16 MB OKIA 300W ATX PSU USB bracket Modem PCI Before, I actually had a 300 GB hard drive installed. However, I read the FAQ for the motherboard and discovered that a maximum of 250 GB hard drive was supported. So I ended up finding the one listed above and put that in. However, upon booting up, I reset the BIOS to defaults and auto-detected all the drives installed. The 250 GB came up as something like 251.0 GB. I didn't think much about it until I tried to boot up a Windows XP installation disc. It booted up successfully and run for about a minute before the computer randomly rebooted. I've made sure that all the jumpers and settings are correct and everything has been installed correctly. I've tried running it without the addons and one stick of RAM but still the same thing. What else could be causing this problem?

  • Force a browser to load the 'https' edition of a website, not the 'http'?

    This is similar to this previous question, but I believe it's a bit different*. Sites like GMail support a preference that pushes all traffic through the SSL edition of the site rather than the plain-text protocol. For sites that don't offer such preferences (or ones that may, but I have been unable to find, like facebook), is there a way using only the browser (perhaps with a plugin or addon) to always try SSL first, and fall-back to plain-text iff SSL fails? Is that solution available on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux? Just one? * The previous question was looking for external applications that would accomplish this goal.

    How should browser detection be done now that jQuery 1.3 has deprecated (and I'm assuming removed in a future version) $.browser.msie and similar? I have used this a lot for determining which browser we are in for CSS fixes for pretty much every browser, such as: $.browser.opera $.browser.safari $.browser.mozilla ... well I think that's all of them :) The places where I use it, I'm not sure what browser issue is causing the problem, because a lot of times I'm just trying to fix a 1 px difference in a browser. Edit: With the new jQuery functionality, there is no way to determine if you are in IE6 or IE7. How should one determine this now?

  • Test and Report Add-on Compatibility in Firefox

    Now that the new version of Firefox is out you probably have a favorite extension or two that has not updated yet. You can get that extension working again, test it, and report back to Mozilla on how well it does with the Add-on Compatibility Reporter extension. Before For our example we chose a great extension that unfortunately has not been updated yet. As you can see here Firefox is refusing to let the extension install. After As soon as you install Add-on Compatibility Reporter you will be presented with an information page on how the extension works and what you can do with it. You should definitely take a moment to read this as it is very helpful. After trying our non-compatible extension again we were able to proceed with the install process. Notice at the bottom that “compatibility checking” has been overridden. Success! As soon as we restarted our browser it was easy to see the “non-compatible icon” in the “Add-ons Manager Window”…but the extension did install though (terrific!). Clicking on the extension’s entry will reveal a new button in the lower right corner. Using the “Compatibility Drop-Down Menu” you can report if the extension is working as well as before or if it is actually having problems. The extension that we used for our example had no problems whatsoever so good news there. Whichever option you choose you will be presented with a small “Report Window” with information about the extension, your browser’s version number, and your operating system. Click “Submit Report” to send it on its’ way. You will see a confirmation message letting you know that your report was successfully submitted. While the extension itself has not been altered in any form at least you have it working again and have helped verify whether it still works well or not. Notice the “notation” present now in place of the “Compatibility Button” that lets you know that you have already taken care of that particular extension. Looking great… Conclusion If you have a favorite extension that you miss using in the newest release of Firefox then this is definitely an extension to add to your browser. Not only will your extension start working again but you can let Mozilla know how well it is working and (hopefully) help get the extension updated.     What do you use to detect visitor's mobile phone, down to the model if possible? Currently we maintain our own database but it's really getting behind due to lack of manpower to maintain it, so we decided to give 3rd party solution a try. These are my candidates but I don't have time to really try them all: DeviceAtlas - 1 year personal evaluation, but basic license is affordable. Their database look solid with daily update and user-contributed tests / updates. I am favoring this one at the moment. DetectRight - I was recommended this by a colleague but really can't find much from their site. 20k devices -- really? WURFL - Open source, database collaboratively derived from UAProf. So basically if you're going with UAProf solution, you're better off with WURFL. DetectMoBileBrowsers - This looks like the simplest of all. Too bad it's language dependent (PHP). Please share your experience or suggestions!

    Google has an Easter egg that draws 3D graph but when I tried it out on chrome it complained about no WebGL support. I've also tested it on Firefox whose WebGL support was enabled but ended up with the same problem. Thus, I suspect it's an issue of my GPU. Some googling led me to chrome://gpu and here's what I got Graphics Feature Status Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable HTML Rendering: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable 3D CSS: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration unavailable WebGL: Unavailable. Hardware acceleration unavailable WebGL multisampling: Unavailable.     We are on the verge of a conversion. For years, our company supported only IE for its internal (intranet) home-built tools. Since a few of our users are still on XP, which means IE only goes up to 8... a heavily JS / jQuery site wont even load! We have been in the process of converting to use Chrome instead, to make use of its javascript performance. But, it has now been suggested that we support all common browsers... internally for these tools. Which means more development time to scale-back some of these new applications, more time to test in all browsers, and we are already under staffed. Are there any good informational sites/posts out there, that already make this argument?

    Hello, I have a Visual Studio 2003 solution that I've opened with VS2008, and it converted successfully. However, it won't build because the code contains some things that were acceptable under Visual Studio 2003, but simply don't fly under Visual Studio 2008. Changing the code would be really difficult in my particular situation. Is there a flag or something that I can set which would use 2003-compatible compilation? Cheers, Frank

  • JQuery returns wrong value for IE Compatibility

    Hey , I'm using JQuery and there seems to be a problem when I run IE in compatibility mode (and generally any IE less than version 8). I'm trying to use attr("value") for a button control. In IE8, and other browsers, this works fine and the result of this code: alert($(this).attr("value")); is simply the value of set in the button attribute (e.g. Home, Settings, Help etc..) However, when this is run in IE compatibility view, I get the entire HTML as the output value: <SPAN class=ui-button-text>Home</SPAN> This causes my checks to fail. Is there a way to return just the Home section across all browsers? Thanks

    Hello, I am having a problem with my site in IE8 Compatibility mode. Below is a URL where you get the basic idea of what my websites dropdowns look like. The dropdowns are done in CSS and when you hover over one dropdown the submenu for the dropdown expands under the dropdown to the right of it. It works correctly in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and normal IE8. But when you go to compatibility mode it isn't working correctly.     Hi all - I am working on a jQuery script on http://www.qxl.dk/ and I can't seem to get IE7 (or more accurately, IE8 in IE7 compatibility mode) to load my content. The sidebar box on the right named "QXL Aktuelt" loads its HTML content from an external file using Ajax load(), then triggers a custom jQuery event ("aktuelt_loaded") that starts a carousel script (like a scrolling newsticker). Several other content sections on the same page are loaded through Ajax and they work just fine, so I'm wondering what's going wrong. Everything works as expected in Firefox 3.6 and IE8, but not in IE8's compatibility mode.
