• Hard disk with bad clusters

  I have been trying to backup some files up to DVD recently, and the burn process failed saying the CRC check failed for certain files. I then tried to browse to these files in Windows explorer and my whole machine locks up and I have to reboot. I ran check disk without the '/F /R' arguments and it told me I had bad sectors. So I re-ran it with the arguments and check disk fails during the 'Chkdsk is verifying usn journal' stage with this error: Insufficient disk space to fix the usn journal $j data stream The hard disk is a 300GB Partition on a 400GB Disk, and there is 160GBs of free space on the partition. My os (Windows 7) is installed on the other partition and is running fine. Any idea how I fix this? or repair it enough to copy my files off it?

• Eclipse Check for Updates issue

  I install Eclipse from the Software Center so it links up and will be updated with the rest of my software. Because I am developing for Android, however, I have to install the ADT Plugin within Eclipse by going to Help Install new software (or something to that effect). Now, I do understand that I can update Eclipse through the actual Ubuntu software center/system, but in order to update plugins and extensions within Eclipse, I have to go to Help Check for Updates (which then scans all plugins for updates). The only issue, is that when I installed through the software center, the owner became root, and whenever I run it without root, I'm not able to update - I get the error message "Insufficient access privileges to apply this update." When I run it as root, all of my plugins disappear, because I guess I installed them as myself, not as root. I tried to install the plugins as root, but the Install New Software choice would not work. Ubuntu 12.04 and Eclipse 3.7.2-1

  I was installing TFS on my local laptop last week and just got around to setting up my initial collection using the TFS Console tool and “Bang!”  I received a message that told me that my local database didn’t have the full-text search option installed.  I remember the option in a (long) list of options and didn’t remember fiddling with it.   Whatever the reason, if you are installing TFS Basic on your box, make sure you have that little check ticked, or you won’t get the big fat one pictured above.  I installed SQL 2008 Developer edition which worked well for what I needed so far, and just needed to run the “Add Feature” option instead of the “Repair” option. • BASH Scripting: Check If running with sudo/superuser, if not, dont run, return error

  This is something I've been curious about. I make a lot of small bash scripts (.sh files) to do tasks that I routinely do. Some of those tasks require everything to be ran as superuser. I've been curious: Is it possible to, within the BASH script prior to everything being run, check if the script is being run as superuser, and if not, print a message saying You must be superuser to use this script, then subsequently terminate the script itself. The other side of that is I'd like to have the script run when the user is superuser, and not generate the error. Any ideas on coding (if statements, etc.) on how to execute the aforementioned?

• Check connection and reconnect wifi

  I'm building a wireless photoframe. The one thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to get my wifi connection back up using a recommended method. Right now I edited /etc/network/interfaces so wlan0 is started at boot: auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp wireless-essid ourssid This method works fine for booting. But I found that if I do not check the connection for a long time (could be a week) it might be down. So I should reconnect. What I do now to verify the connection is working is downloading a file from the server that can't be cached (http://server.ext/ping.php?randomize=123456) If I fail to retrieve the file I assume that the connection is no longer working and I run a shell script like #!/bin/bash ifconfig wlan0 up iwconfig wlan0 essid "ourssid" dhclient wlan0 And the connection comes back. But I can't find anything if this is in any way a good method. Can this be improved upon, or is this already right?

  I am trying to setup Appgate Ip tunneling driver on my ubuntu 12.04 by following appgate instructions listed below: Installation, Linux Make sure the kernel has support for the Universal TUN/TAP device driver, and then log in as root and create a new directory somewhere, and copy the files ag_iptd add_route add_gw_route add_hosts_entry ag_iptd clean_hosts_file del_route del_gw_route del_hosts_entry interface_down interface_up remove_dns_server set_dns_server fix_localhost into that directory. Then start the IPTD daemon by doing modprobe tun <directory-somewhere>/ag_iptd There is also an init script 'ag_iptd.init' that can be installed to automatically start the IPTD daemon every time the OS is loaded.Please check the documentation of your Linux distribution on howto do this. so is there any way to checkif my ubuntu 12.04 kernel has support for the Universal TUN/TAP device driver? and how to do so? • Check for bodies within a specific circle in Box2D

  I'm trying to find positions to insert new bodies into my world. For that, I'd like to have a "free" spot where this body wouldn't overlap with anything else. So my plan was to sample "random" positions and check whether they overlap with my "potential" new body. Since my bodies are always circular, I'd need to test within a given circle. So far, the only way to use box2d for this seems to use b2World::QueryAABB around my circle and manually doing an overlap test with all the fixtures it gives me (Box2D doesn't event seem to allow me to tap into its overlapping tests?!). It seems to me like Box2D should already provide such functionality - is there a way that lets me do this without reinventing most of the wheel again?

  I put the last Ubuntu iso on my USB stick using UNetBootin, after formatting it to fat32. I've already done that before with other operating systems and it worked. I can't actually boot Ubuntu from USB since I get a black screen with the error "Machine check error" on top the an automatic reboot happens. The error appears right after the boot, I can't see anything else before. I'm using my ASUS K53SV latop. Does anybody know how to solve this?

• Need to sanity-check my .htaccess, especially Limit GET POST line for Google repellent

  I need a sanity check on this .htaccess (from a WordPress site) I inherited from a 5 month+ old site. What's the symptom? Google + Bing crawl, but don't index any of the pages. Let me be clear: I'm not mad about "not ranking high." I think something is (accidentally) rejecting search engine indexing. I am not an expert on .htaccess, but one part especially looked funny, the Limit GET POST line. Is it not weird to have both Allow and Deny all, with no parameters? • Effective way to check if an Entity/Player enters a region/trigger

  I was wondering how multiplayer games detect if you enter a special region. Let's assume there is a huge map that is so big that simply checking it would become a huge performance issue. I've seen bukkit (a modding API for Minecraft servers) firing an Event on every single move. I don't think that larger games do the same because even if you have only a few coordinates you are interested in, you have to loop through a few trigger zone to see if the player is inside your region - for every player. This seems like an extremely CPU-intense operation to me even though I've never developed something like that. Is there a special algorithm that is used by larger games to accomplish this? The only thing I could imagine is to split up the world into multiple parts and to register the event not on the movement itself but on all the parts that are covered by your area and only check for areas that are registered in the current part. And another thing I would like to know: How could you detect when someone must have entered a trigger but you never saw him directly in it since his client only sent you an move packet shortly before entering and after leaving the trigger area. Drawing a line and calculate all colliding parts seems rather CPU intensive if you have to perform it every time.

• Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10: Filesystem check or mount failed

  I attempted to upgrade from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 today, and mid upgrade the system started flaking out, and eventually locked up entirely. I was forced to restart the computer, and am now unable to get the computer to boot up at all. When I boot currently, it takes me to the GRUB menu, and I can choose to boot normally, or boot in an older version. I have tried several things, which I list below, but no matter what, when I try to finish booting into Ubuntu, I receive the following error: Filesystem check or mount failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and continue booting after re-trying filesystems. Any further errors will be ignored root@ubuntu-computername:~# I have fun fsck -f and everything appears correct, no errors are reported. and it passes all 5 checks.
