  • Personal | Going For A Long Drive

    - by Jeff Julian
This weekend, we were planning on going to Mt. Rushmore, but with the weather the way it is, we decided to head south instead. So what are we going to do? A tour of different restaurants on the show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Not very original I know since there are web sites and iPhone apps dedicated to locating the establishments, but it definitely sounds like it could be some fun. We are going to leave KC tonight and go through St. Louis, Memphis, Little Rock, Dallas, Oklahoma City, and back to KC. The kiddos are excited and we have plenty of movies, coloring books, etc in the car for the trip. This will be the first time we will get to use our turn around seats in the mini-van with our pull out table. I will have my laptop and phone if anything goes wrong with the site while I am gone and John will be back in KC as well. I hope to pushing some photos and reviews of the restaurants as we travel. • What must one know when approaching web development?

    - by Tal Koren
I just started working as a novice Web Developer. I know PHP pretty well, as well as some basic jQuery. Anyway, my boss told me I should explore and learn about MVC, Memcache, Design Patterns, how Apache servers work and how to set one up etc. What I want to ask is actually this: What should I learn further? Web Development is a big area and most odds are that I'll never stop learning, but what are the basics I should learn about? What are the fundamentals? Currently I'm focusing on Server Side Development, but a very big part of me also wants to become a front-end ninja, so please consider that in your comments. Thanks in advance, you rock. :)

  • Yes, you can benefit from both data and backup compression

    - by AaronBertrand
Earlier today, MSSQLTips posted a backup compression tip by Thomas LaRock ( blog | twitter ). In that article, Tom states: "If you are already compressing data then you will not see much benefit from backup compression." I don't want to argue with a rock star, and I will concede that he may be right in some scenarios. Nonetheless, I tweeted that "it depends;" Thomas then asked for "an example where you have data comp and you also see a large benefit from backup comp?" My initial reaction came about...(read more)

  • How to handle geo sitemaps?

    - by Floran
I have a site with company profiles. I already have a sitemap.xml However, now I'm reading on KML geo sitemaps: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/understand-and-rock-the-google-venice-update I wondered how that may apply to a site with company profiles. Do I place 1 large KML file showing all the locations of businesses in the KML format? Or do I need to make that more specific? locatins-in-LA.kml for example? And what is the relationship between a kml file and a sitemap.xml? It seems that I need to have a reference to the kml files that should be included in the sitemap.xml, but if that is the case, I don't know how. Help! :)

  • Canada vs Norway

During the winter Olympics, I had a little bet with Sondre Bjells.  Sondre is the RD for Olso, Norway, a rising rock star in the .NET world and a very great guy.  The bet was that if Canada would win Gold against Norway in the man curling final, I would wear something funny and Norwegian like a Viking hat at Mix while Sondre would wear a Canadian jersey. Well, guess who won? You know what?  I glad that Norway didnt win because I fear I would have had to wear the famous Norwegian...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Black screen and blinking cursor for a while during Startup

    - by Soumyadip Mukherjee
I've installed the Ubuntu 12.04.1 "rock solid" release. Everything works fine apart from the fact that during start-up the usual purple screen and Ubuntu logo doesn't appear. Only a black screen and blinking cursor is visible. Then after a while, for a fraction of a second, the Ubuntu logo and purple screen comes and disappears to the login page. I tried Plymouth but it didn't help in solving the problem. It did end up changing the logo to a more artistic one. Can any one please help? Ubuntu is installed on my ASUS 1225c netbook.

  • Examples of interesting implementations of character stats?

    - by Tchalvak
I've got this BBG going ( http://ninjawars.net ), and the character stats currently are simplistic. I'm looking to add a few stats to the current 1/2 (strength and maximum hitpoints, essentially). I've come up with: (strength (unchanged), speed, stamina, and some others that are somewhat interesting wildcard stats). However, I'm not satisfied with how boring the effects of some of these stats are, because they're very linear. Better stat, better effects of the stat, but the stats don't interact with each-other, there's no Rock-Paper-Scissors interaction, having more is always better all the time. So what I'd really like is to see examples of interesting character stats or effects of stats? Examples that I can think of off hand: Call of Cthulu's Insanity stat (things get really weird/chaotic if you start losing sanity) White Wolf stats, to a certain extent (the stats themselves have some basic effects, and all skills effectiveness base themselves off of stats as well) What are some other ways people have used stats to check out?

  • 2D pathfinding - finding smooth paths

    - by Kooi Nam Ng
I was trying to implement a simple pathfinding, but the outcome is less satisfactory than what I intended to achieve. The thing is units in games like Starcraft 2 move in all directions whereas units in my case only move in at most 8 directions (Warcraft 1 style) as these 8 directions direct to next available nodes (they move from a tile to next neighboring tile). What should I do in order to achieve the result as in Starcraft 2? Shrink the tile size? On the picture you can see a horizontal line of rock tiles being obstacles, and the found path marked as green tiles. The red line is the path I want to achieve.

  • JavaOne+Oracle Develop or OOW? - You don't need to choose

    - by shay.shmeltzer
So you went to the JavaOne/Oracle Develop registration and noticed that this pass doesn't include entry to the Oracle OpenWorld (OOW) sessions. Then you looked at the OOW pass and noticed this one doesn't include access to Oracle Develop and JavaOne. What's up with this? What if you want to see session in all of the above? Well turns out you don't need to pay for two complete passes (each around $2,000) - if you actually choose OOW registration and go through the registration steps - after you finish inserting your personal info you'll get a chance to extend your OOW pass to include Oracle Develop and JavaOne for only an additional $100. Cool! Extra bonus this year - even if you are just getting the JavaOne/Oracle Develop pass you get to go to the Wednesday night party with the big rock shows.

  • What are the most important programming skills you need to improve as a team Leader or project manager?

    - by Aba Dov
I decided to ask this question after I read the valuable answers to the great question What is the single most effective thing you did to improve your programming skills? and after attending Ad Burns "Secrets of a rock star programmer". It made me think about me and what programming skills I try to improve. I came to realize that there should be a difference in the programming skills you try to improve as developer and the programming skills you should improve as a team leader or project manager. My question is: What are the most important programming skills you need to improve as a team Leader or project manager? What would you recommend to others that want to improve?

  • ADF EMG at Oracle Open World 2012: Forms to FMW

    - by ultan o'broin
A super menu of sessions from the Oracle Application Development Framework Enterprise Methodology Group (that's ADF EMG to the rest of you) folks is now lined up for Oracle Open World 2012 (OOW12). These sessions fall under the category of "The Year After the Year of the ADF Developer" and cover everything for developers of enterprise apps with the Oracle toolkits, be they coming from an Oracle Forms background or on Oracle Fusion Middleware (FMW). Sessions also explain the architecture, building and deployment of Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) apps. Anyone interested in developing enterprise applications with ADF should be beating a path to these now. Guaranteed rock star developer (and wannabe) stuff! A great return on investment for your attendance at OOW12. See you there!

  • Estimated budget for RockBand 3 character creator feature [closed]

    - by milesmeow
I want to get an idea of the budget required to make something akin to the Rock Band 3 character creator. We won't have the same level of detail for creating the base character, i.e. no face feature customization. We essentially want some very basic body sizing and want a bunch of clothing and accessories that the characters can try on. The clothing and accessories need to adapt and fit to the body types/shapes. The character should also support movement...and the clothes should move with the body. I've asked a similar question here regarding the development effort but not necessarily a budget. Do you think it's a $1M job? Most of the effort will go into creating the character models and the clothing models. The rest of the effort will go towards the user interface to navigate the customization features.

Okay, so I'm a java developer (or at least I think I am),and also a student at the same time I want to get a job when I graduate,I'll be graduating in a year or so (hopefully) (Note: my major has nothing to do with programming) Now, I'm between a rock and a hard place I also want to nail the foundations to become a good software developer. I want to be able to write programs that solve problems, not just glue code The software market in my country for java developers is just a few developers working with Java EE (struts,spring,hibernate....etc) I'm currently learning C++ with this book. I've also watched most of the 1st lecture of this course and I understood pretty much everything I watched To sum it up, I have three options Learn Java EE Learn C++ Learn Scheme Which is better for me at this point?

  • Are there any additional considerations to make when designing a site structure if you plan to use persistent connection technologies?

    - by Psytronic
As the title states, I'm thinking of making a simple-card-game based website, using persistent connection technology (Something like signalR) for the actual game part of it. I've never planned a site to use this technology, and wondering for those who have, are there any additional things that need to be taken into consideration for the site structure? I'm planning on using the asp MVC framework for the whole thing, and starting off with some simple game (e.g. card based Rock/Paper/Scissors) for proof of concept (to see if I can get it working how I think it would in my head).
