• Which optional features would you recommend for a raytracer? [closed]

  I'm developing a basic triangle mesh raytracer on a short deadline. This means I can't implement every feature I come across, so I'm looking for some feedback about which features you think are most important, taking into consideration the performance of the feature and how much punch it packs. I'm especially looking for optimization techniques that allow for a faster rendering and simple techniques that make a big impact on the final scene quality. • A c++ program that computes the min and max of f(x) for a rectangle inputed by user

  So bassicly this is the problem quoted from my teacher : "You have to write a program in C++ that computes the minimal and the maximal value of function f(x,y) obtained on an integer point in a given rectangle [a, b] x [c, d]. Your program should prompt the user to input numerical values of a, b, c and d, as floating point numbers, which are expected to be in a range from -100 thru 100. In case when minimal or maximal values do not exists, your program should output appropriate messages. f(x,y)=x+x*x+x*x*x+y+y*y " So before anyone tell me that i should try do it myself , i'll tell them that ive been trying to do it myself for the past 8 days but my deadline is aproaching and i just cant figure it out its a really simple program but i just cant understand it ... I wont post my attempts because all i saw in these forums is that when someone posts their try and a milion people start to say dont look it this way thry this and bla bla and the guy who posted it was just wondering for minor thing ... so what ever thank you all in advance and thats it :)

• Domain resolution - local first then external

  I would like to know how I can configure my dns settings so that domain is resolved locally first, then if not resolved it goes to external DNS. I had this working before, I am using Ubuntu through a VM and need the local domain to resolve first but since I have upgraded I had to reconfigure network and now it works only external, local host file does not seem to even be used. Is there an easy way to check this out? I did slap it up in google but no specific answer seemed to match my case and I too tight on delivery deadline to test-and-try different approaches. You guys rock, thanks.

• haml with rails3 (git master) and devise: form_for syntax change breaks haml -- suggestions?

  i am trying to get haml working with a rails3 project; since i am quite far in the modeling i wanted to go to the haml views now -- seems that the current haml (git master) does not work together with the current rails3 git master because of some syntax changes in rails3 form_for does anyone have more information on the syntax changes? is there a temporary workaround to use haml with rails3? • Which OAuth library do you find works best for Objective-C/iPhone?

  I have been looking to switch to OAuth for my Twitter integration code and now that there is a deadline in less than 7 weeks (see countdown link) it is even more important to make the jump to OAuth. I have been doing Basic Authentication which is extremely easy. Unfortunately OAuth does not appear to be something that I would whip together in a couple of hours. http://www.countdowntooauth.com/ So I am looking to use a library. I have put together the following list. MPOAuth MGTwitterEngine OAuthConsumer I see that MPOAuth has some great features with a good deal of testing code in place but there is one big problem. It does not work. The sample iPhone project that is supposed to authenticate with Twitter causes an error which others have identified and logged as a bug. http://code.google.com/p/mpoauthconnection/issues/detail?id=29 The last code change was March 11 and this bug was filed on March 30. It has been over a month and this critical bug has not been fixed yet. So I have moved on to MGTwitterEngine. I pulled down the source code and loaded it up in Xcode. Immediately I find that there are a few dependencies and the README file does not have a clear list of steps to fetch those dependencies and integrate them with the project so that it builds successfully. I see this as a sign that the project is not mature enough for prime time. I see also that the project references 2 libraries for JSON when one should be enough. One is TouchJSON which has worked well for me so I am again discouraged from relying on this project for my applications. I did find that MGTwitterEngine makes use of OAuthConsumer which is one of many OAuth projects hosted by an OAuth project on Google Code. http://code.google.com/p/oauth/ http://code.google.com/p/oauthconsumer/wiki/UsingOAuthConsumer It looks like OAuthConsumer is a good choice at first glance. It is hosted with other OAuth libraries and has some nice documentation with it. I pulled down the code and it builds without errors but it does have many warnings. And when I run the new Build and Analyze feature in Xcode 3.2 I see 50 analyzer results. Many are marked as potential memory leaks which would likely lead to instability in any app which uses this library. It seems there is no clear winner and I have to go with something before the big Twitter OAuth deadline. Any suggestions?

• How does one control select lists using form API ?

  I know this is somewhat of a newb question but I am running into a deadline and 3 days of Drupal experience will just not cut it... $form['gender'] = array('#type' = 'select', '#title' = t('Gender: *'), '#options' = array(t('Male'), t('Female')), '#required' = TRUE, '#weight' = 2, ); How do I assign values to select values ? • JQuery: Selector that contains some text, but doesn't contain others

  Sorry if this question is mind numbingly easy to answer, but I'm a bit new to JQuery and I have a tight deadline. I am looking for a selector for textbox elements that have this format: id = "FixedName_#" "FixedName" will always be "FixedName", but I only want to find elements where the # is positive. So I would want to find "FixedName_1", and "FixedName_2" for example, but skip over "FixedName_-1" and "FixedName_-2". Thanks!

• Cant route VLAN over VPN between Cisco ASA 5505 and Cisco 870

  We've had an existing VPN between a 5505 and 870 for some time. We've just added VLANs to the network on the 5505 side. We can't seem to figure out how to get devices on the VLANs to communicate with devices on the 870 network which have no VLANs. We're thinking we might have to use a router of sorts to handle the routing before hitting the ASA. We thought PFsense might work well. We've been banging our heads against this thing for 2 days so any immediate help would be great. We're up against a deadline. Thanks!!!

  i am thinking to create a To Do list sort of thing for my Project work. it's sort of a To do list type thing, meant for Multiple Users. i mean each user will have his Login and Password , to access into his account or profile and from there he/she can Manage his own To-Do list. it's has to be Kind of like Remember the Milk sort of. Every user will have his own To Do list. i mean now as Different users will have Different To Dos to perform and so different To Dos Lists, if for data fields like in tabular form. Task || Priority || Deadline || Number of days required ||Status. -----||----------||----------||-------------------------||-------------------- -----||----------||----------||-------------------------||-------------------- -----||----------||----------||-------------------------||-------------------- So what i meant to ask , Can this type of thing be done using MySQL as database and and any web based server side language PHP, ASP, JSP. i mean Can this be done through RDBMS like MySQL, for here different member users will have different to do lists than each others to keep and maintain.

• 12-24 rack, 10-32 server thumbscrew. How to mount?

  We have just purchased a APC rack (model AR204A) with 12-24 threaded holes. We couldn't get a "square hole" model in time for our setup deadline. Unfortunately our rack servers (Lenovo RD240) appear to have 10-32 thumbscrews for securing the server to the rack. We've successfully mounted the server rails to the rack using 12-24 screws however the 10-32 thumbscrews in the server front won't "grab" the 12-24 holes in the rack, thus there is nothing to stop the server from sliding right off the rack if pushed from the back. The thumb screws on the server don't seem to be removable, so we can't simply use 12-24 screws instead. Any suggestions on how to work around this problem? Is there any way to "convert" a 12-24 hole to a 10-32 thread (or similar approach)? Thanks in advance.

• How to tell if linux disk IO is causing excessive (> 1 second) application stalls

  I have a Java application performing a large volume (hundreds of MB) of continuous output (streaming plain text) to about a dozen files a ext3 SAN filesystem. Occasionally, this application pauses for several seconds at a time. I suspect that something related to ext3 vsfs (Veritas Filesystem) functionality (and/or how it interacts with the OS) is the culprit. What steps can I take to confirm or refute this theory? I am aware of iostat and /proc/diskstats as starting points. • Ubuntu 11.04 hangs at "checking battery state" while booting

  When I try to boot Ubuntu 11.04, it just hangs when it gets to checking battery state. I know this issue is usually related to graphic drivers, but it worked like a charm for months now. Last time I was on Ubuntu I updated my system with the update manager, so maybe an update caused it. Anyway, I really need Ubuntu. I'm in the middle of work on a website and I have a deadline, so I need some help over here. Thanks. p.s. I tried reinstalling gnome-power-manager. Didn't work. And I'm not on a laptop.

• Linux IO scheduler on databases with RAID

  Hi, I have a linux database(MySQL) server(Dell 2950) with a 6-disk RAID 10. The default IO scheduler on it is CFQ. However, from what I have read and heard, there is no need for a scheduler like CFQ when reordering/scheduling is also done by underlying RAID controller; on the contrary since it does not account underlying RAID configuration into account performance may actually degrade with CFQ. The primary concern is to reduce CPU usage and improve throughput. Also, I have seen recommendations of using noop/deadline IO scheduler for databases primarily because of the nature of their R/W access.

• Does Google Chrome take over all other browsers no matter what?

  I can not use either IE or Firefox since I have downloaded Google Chrome. I don't even have Chrome set as my default anymore but it opens up anyway. I need to use IE in order to download updates for Windows Movie Maker and I can only download it using IE, thanks to good old Microsoft. And no where can I find a way to access IE on my computer. It is not shown in programs and no shortcut was created on my desktop in the download. Any suggestions? I got to get this video down and I am on a tight deadline. Thanks.

• EU Research for ICT - Call 7 - biggest ever at € 780 million

  Under the Digital Agenda for Europe, the Commission has committed to maintaining the pace of a 20% yearly increase of the annual ICT R&D budget at least until 2013. The EU's flagship policy programme calls for doubling of annual public spending on ICT R&D by 2020 and to leverage an equivalent increase in private spending to achieve the goals of Europe's 2020 strategy for jobs and growth. Call 7 is one of the biggest calls ever launched for information and communications technology (ICT) research proposals under the EU's research framework programmes. It will result in project funding of € 780 million in 2011. This funding will advance research on the future internet, robotics, smart and embedded systems, photonics, ICT for energy efficiency, health and well-being in an ageing society, and more. The €780 million call for proposals is part of the biggest ever annual Work Programme under the EU's 7th Framework Programme for Research. Almost €1.2 billion has been budgeted for 2011. €220 million were made available already in July 2010 for public private partnerships focusing on ICT for smart cars, green buildings, sustainable factories and the future internet. Universities, research centres, SMEs, large companies and other organisations in Europe and beyond are eligible to apply for project funding under ICT Call 7. • Arguments to homologate Firefox in a Company

  I developed a web project for my company and this project was designed to use Mozilla Firefox (including the javascript (jQuery)). However, now the company wants the project to be transferred to Internet Explorer. I know that in Google, there are several explanations about Mozilla Firefox, which I can demonstrate to the company. But is there any link showing that Internet Explorer runs the W3C standards and has several justifications for why using Mozilla Firefox? I searched on youtube and slideshare, but both have a very weak argument for me to select them and show to the company. The company where I work is still very naive to keep Internet Explorer. 1) The project is intranet. Only 400 internal employees can access the web. 2) The company argues that Mozilla Firefox is not approved by the company. Any suggestions? Any link which shows that the developers of the world hate Internet Explorer? A link explaining why developers do not like Internet Explorer? After the answers, I'm thinking of making a great slide with all the necessary arguments to the company homologue firefox. And yet, published in slideshare. EDIT: Someone here must be wondering why I have not designed, also for Internet Explorer. Welllll... As the deadline for project completion is always short, I developed the project focused only on Mozilla Firefox, because the browser Mozilla Firefox most respects W3C standards (and javascript too) than Internet Explorer.
