• Windows VirtualBox can't browse network

  I'm running Windows XP as a VirtualBox guest OS under Ubuntu 11.10, and I can't browse the Windows network. It seems like I can connect to some specific network shares, maybe only ones that are already mapped to drives. If I disable ufw, it all works fine, and when I enable it again, the network browsing continues to work. I tried looking at /var/log/ufw.log and saw it blocking port 138. When I allowed that port, then I saw it blocking port 137. I found this answer, and it led me to bug 360975. The bug originally asked for both nf_conntrack_pptp and nf_conntrack_netbios_ns to be added to the defaults, but in comment 11, Jamie decided not to include nf_conntrack_pptp in the fix. I tried adding it in, and it seemed to solve my problem, but then the problem came back. How can I let the Windows guest OS browse the local network?

  AFAIK, there are 2 ways to make search engines aware of a sitemap's location: Include an absolute link to it in robots.txt Submit it to them directly. The relevant URLs are: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=SITEMAP_URL http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?sitemap=SITEMAP_URL Where SITEMAP_URL is the absolute URL of the sitemap. Currently, I do both. Regarding (2), I have a job that runs automatically every day which submits the sitemap to Bing and Google. I don't think there's any reason to do (1) and (2), but I'm paranoid, so I do. I imagine you can avoid both (1) and (2) if you just make your sitemap accessible at a conventional URL (like robots.txt). What's the simplest and most reliable way to ensure that search engines can find your sitemap?

  I am using 14.04 with unity. Quite regularly it happens to me that I want to shutdown the computer, but in the right corner menu I accidently hit Suspend in stead of Shutdown. Is it possible to add a dialogue box on the suspend menu? So that I don't always have to come back from suspend to finally shutdown afterwards. Or is it possible to make the shutdown button like 3 times bigger than the suspend button?

  I run a website that includes a blog which was hand-coded by myself and is hosted on the same domain. My partner in this endeavour thinks it would be a good idea to open up a blogger/wordpress blog and duplicate the on-site blog on this off-site blog. AFAIK the main reason for doing this is the SEO benefits of the inbound links that this off-site blog will create. I think this is a bad idea, because: Effectively what we're doing is creating a (very small scale) link farm We're more likely to be punished than rewarded (in SEO terms) for duplicating our content across domains This introduces a problem of synchronising our content across domains. For example, if a blog post is edited on the on-site blog, then ideally the off-site blog should be similarly updated. I know very little about SEO, so would be interested to hear what more informed readers have to say.

  I know that an SSL wildcard certificate (*.example.org) can be used to support many names under the domain (a.example.org, b.example.org, c.example.org). I also know that the * is only good for matching a single level of name. That is, *.example.org will not work on a.b.example.org. What if I used a certificate with the name ..example.org? I'd like to build a certificate with the following name configuration: CN=example.org subjectAltName=DNS:example.org, DNS:*.example.org, DNS:*.*.example.org, DNS:*.*.*.example.org I've tried building a few like this as self-signed certificates, but I've not had good results. For example, chrome tells me "Server's certificate does not match the URL." Is it possible to have nested wildcards in a certificate, or do the popular browsers not support this?

  I found a ton of formulae and what not, but 3D isn't my forte so I'm at a loss of what specifically to use. My goal is to convert the data in an 3D .obj file (vertices, normals, faces) to CSS3D (width, height, rotateX,Y,Z and/or similar transforms).   Hi, I'm looking for the JDK source code for Java 1.5 update 18 (on win XP). I don't want to install a JDK, I don't want the source code for the entire VM, just the source for the JDK libs, so that when I navigate to a Java class in Eclipse, it opens up the source code. Is it possible to download just src.zip (or a zip that contains src.zip)? I don't want to install a new JDK/JRE just to get access to src.zip as I'm concerned that this will have undesirable side-effects such as modifying JAVA_HOME. Thanks, Don

  Hi, I'm having a couple of problems with the JQuery tablesorter plugin. If you click on a column header, it should sort the data by this column, but there are a couple of problems: The rows are not properly sorted (1, 1, 2183, 236) The total row is included in the sort Regarding (2), I can't easily move the total row to a table footer, because the HTML is generated by the displaytag tag library over which I have limited control. Regarding (1), I don't understand why the sort doesn't work as I've used exactly the same JavaScript shown in the simplest example in the tablesorter tutorials.   I'm preparing to upgrade to Win 7 and am trying to ensure that I will be able to reinstall all the relevant applications. Since most applications require product keys, I'm curious if the installation process for Win 7 preserves those keys in any way (say for Office 2007,...) or do I have to locate and reenter every key? Second, for appications that require a key and then check with their home server (Norton Internet Security, for example).   Hi, My Grails app has a User class and a Role class. The User class has an authorities property which holds the roles assigned to that user, e.g. class User { static hasMany = [authorities: Role] // This method is called automatically after a user is inserted def afterInsert() { this.authorities.size() } } If I create a user and assign them a role, a NullPointerException is thrown from the GORM event method afterInsert(), because authorities is null. If I comment out afterInsert() the user is saved correctly along with the assigned role. Is there some reason why I can't access associations from GORM event methods. Is is possible that this event is fired after the User row is inserted, but before the row is added to the User-Role join table? Thanks, Don

  Hi, My understanding is that there are two obvious places in a Grails app where one can do meta-programming: The init closure of Bootstrap.groovy The doWithDynamicMethods closure of a plugin The meta-programming I'm referring to here should be visible throughout the metaprogramming, typical examples include adding (or replacing) methods of 3rd party classes. String.metaClass.myCustomMethod = { /* implementation omitted */ } The disadvantage of (1), is that the metaprogramming won't be applied when the application is dynamically reloaded. The disadvantage of (2) is that I need to create and maintain an entire plugin just for the sake of a little metaprogramming. Is there a better place to do this kind of metaprogramming? Thanks, Don

  Hi, I have a Freemarker template which contains a bunch of placeholders for which values are supplied when the template is processed. I want to conditionally include part of the template if the userName variable is supplied, something like: [#if_exists userName] Hi ${userName}, How are you? [/#if_exists] However, the FreeMarker manual seems to indicate that if_exists is deprecated, but I can't find another way to achieve this. Of course, I could simple providing an additional boolean variable isUserName and use that like this: [#if isUserName] Hi ${userName}, How are you? [/#if] But if there's a way of checking whether userName exists then I can avoid adding this extra variable. Cheers, Don

  Hi, I'm writing a Maven plugin that merges CSS files together. So all the CSS files that match /foo/bar/*.css might get merged to /foo/merged.css. A concern is that in a file such as /foo/bar/baz.css there might be a property such as: background: url("images/pic.jpg") So when the file is merged into /foo/merged.css this will need to be changed to background: url("bar/images/pic.jpg") The recalculated URL obviously depends on 3 factors: original URL original CSS file location merged CSS file location Assuming that the original and merged CSS files are both on the same filesystem, is there a general formula (or Java library) that can be used to calculate the new url given these 3 inputs?   Hi, The following example of using the sendMail method provided by the grails mail plugin appears in this book. sendMail { to "[email protected]" subject "Registration Complete" body view:"/foo/bar", model:[user:new User()] } I understand that the code within {} is a closure that is passed to sendMail as a parameter. I also understand that to, subject and body are method calls. I'm trying to figure out what the code that implements the sendMail method would look like, and my best guess is something like this: MailService { String subject String recipient String view def model sendMail(closure) { closure.call() // Code to send the mail now that all the // various properties have been set } to(recipient) { this.recipient = recipient } subject(subject) { this.subject = subject; } body(view, model) { this.view = view this.model = model } } Is this reasonable, or am I missing something?   Hi, I have a Groovy class similar to class MyClass { Foo foo } Under certain circumstances I don't want to initialize foo and want to stub out all the calls to it. Any methods that return a value should do nothing. I could do it like this: Foo.metaClass.method1 = {param -> } Foo.metaClass.method2 = { -> } Foo.metaClass.method3 = {param1, param2 -> } While this will work, it has a couple of problems Tedious and long-winded, particularly if Foo has a lot of methods This will stub out calls to any instance of Foo (not just foo) Although Groovy provides a StubFor class, if I do this: this.foo = new groovy.mock.interceptor.StubFor(Foo) I get a ClassCastException at runtime. Although this would work if I could redefine foo as: def foo But for reasons I won't go into here, I can't do that. Thanks, Don

  Hi, My Grails app has the following Spring bean defined in spring/resources.groovy calendarService(CalendarService) { bean -> bean.initMethod = "init" } This method looks something like: class CalendarService { void init() { User.findByEmail("[email protected]") } } When I call the dynamic finder findByEmail I get a MissingMethodException. My guess is that I'm trying to call this method too early, i.e. before the domain classes have had the dynamic finders added to their metaclass. One solution would be to call CalendarService.init() myself from Bootstrap.init, rather than instructing Spring to call it, but is there a better solution? Thanks, Don

• Google Calendar API DoS prevention

  Hi, It appears that the Google calendar API effectively locks you out if you create and delete a few (less than 10) calendars within a short space of time. This has made it basically impossible for me to test my app, because it creates/deletes a calendar for each user that is added/removed from the app. Currently, I'm "working around" this issue by creating a new Google account each time I get locked out of the Calendar API. Clearly, this solution is less than satisfactory. Is there any way I can avoid this over-zealous DoS prevention? Thanks, Don

  Hi, I'm looking for a tool that checks JS code, which can be integrated into a Maven build. I need a tool that will check for errors such as use of reserved words as identifiers trailing semi-colon, e.g. var obj = { a: 1, b, 2, } JSLint seems like a perfect candidate, but the problem is that it is too strict, because it also checks for various coding patterns which are (arguably) bad style, but do not actually generate errors in a browser. Examples of such issues include Disallow ++ and -- and Allow one var statement per function If possible, I would like the errors to fail the build, and I would like the other rules to only print warnings (or disable them completely).   Hi, I had a look in the reference doc, and Spring seems to have pretty good support for sending mail. However, I need to login to a mail account, read the messages, and download any attachments. Is downloading mail attachments supported by the Spring mail API? I know you can do this with the Java Mail API, but in the past I've found that very verbose and unpleasant to work with.   Hey guys, I've been looking around for some time now, but I can't find a way to combine these elements: I want a 100% width div, with 1 row of elements. I need to scroll through this div, just like: http://jqueryfordesigners.com/demo/scrollable-timelines.html So with a hidden overflow and such. But now I want some sort of smooth ease when I let go of the mouseclick, so it'll be like a sort sweep. So when I drag the screen from left to right, and let go of the mouse, it'll move on for 1 sec and linearly slowing down. Hm, am I making sense? Does anyone know of any scripts or some tips to put me back on track? Don
