  • Any tips to extend battery life under 'Bootcamped' Win 7

    I have a late 2008 MacBook and have recently installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp. Under OSX I can get about 4 hours of web browsing and general usage but under 7 that is slashed to about 2 hours. I know it's not a 'Windows being rubbish thing' but is there any settings I can change or updated drivers to improve this? (I'm already using Bootcamp 3.1).

  • Convert a Linksys WAG54GP2 ADSL router into Access point only to extend my Wifi range

    I have a wireless lan running on my ASDL2 connection. The router (Seimens Gigaset sx763) is provided by the ISP and is generally good. However I have couple of dead spots at the far end of the house and since I have my old router sitting in the drawer I thought that I'd try to convert it into simple WAP. However downloading the manual from linksys it seems to be that the manual is from an earlier firmware, but the very first option on the very first page seems promising: Wan Mode: Router or ADSL However after this I'm a bit lost. I know that the wireless card on this box will need a mac address and it must get its address from the master router (I thought static might be best). However the again the manual is out of date I have the option of DHCP: ON or OFF or RELAY I've not even got to the more complex options yet. Question is can this device even work this way (seems like it but I cannot find any docs on it), and if so how? Edit: Having now fiddled around I'm of the opinion that this cannot be done.

  • Using a Netgear WGR614v9 to extend wireless signal from Netgear DG934GT

    I'm wondering if someone could please provide me the steps for extending/repeating my wirless signal so that I can have greater wireless range throughout my house. I have 2 wirless Netgear routers, a DG934GT ADSL router (base unit) and WGR614v9 cable router (repeater). I've flashed both routers with the latest firmware and have turned on the wireless repeating function in the WGR614v9 but I can't get internet access when connected to the repeater, I can only get it when connected to the base unit. Can this be achieved by running an ethernet cable between the two routers as thus far I've only tried to get them to contact each other wirelessly. Any help would be appreciated

    i have a patch panel and hardwiring already setup in my office. The patch panel is 24-port and all the ports are engaged. All my switch ports are engaged. Now, I have a printer connected to a wall point (RJ45) which I want to shift to a new room where there is no LAN setup. I want to have two RJ45 wall plugs in the new room so that I can connect one RJ45 port to have my LAN in the new room and the other RJ45 wall port I want to use for my printer. There is no option other than LAN (no wireless). Please help me and tell me how do I get the two RJ45 wall plate plugs in the new room up and keep my LAN running. It is a little urgent for me. Please help.

    I have extended the space of my SAN vDisk from 1TB to 1.2TB, but Windows Explorer doesn't show the new size. After resize the vdisk in the SAN Manager, the Disk Management utility shows the 200GB unallocated space, then I resized the partition to use the unallocated space to get a 1.2TB partition, the process was succesfully, but in the Windows File Explorer the disk still have 1TB of total space. Win version: Windows Storage Server Enterprise 2007. Do I need to restart the server? How can I use the new extra space without rebooting?

    I moved into a new place and my old Wi-Fi router just doesn't have the range to get into all the rooms. I've been investigating a lot of options and I'm wondering what other folks have done here. Moving the current location of my primary Wi-Fi router is not an option thanks to our cable provider and our landlord. Buy a bigger, beefier router (seems expensive). If so, should I go for one of those draft 802.11n ones to avoid microwave/other Wi-Fi router interference? Set up a router with DD-WRT as a repeater Leech the neighbors' open Wi-Fi access point. Alright, I was kidding about the last one but I'm genuinely curious as to what my best option is.

  • LDAP: Extend database using referral

    My company uses an off-site LDAP server to handle authentication. I'm currently working on a local VPN for my branch that needs to use the off-site LDAP to check user's usernames and passwords, but I don't want every employee to have access to the VPN - I need to be able to control whether users can authenticate with the off-site LDAP based on whether they're allowed to use the VPN. My current solution involves having our own local LDAP server, which has a referral to the off-site server (I got most of my information from here: http://www.zytrax.com/books/ldap/ch7/referrals.html). This means that when local users try to check their credentials with the local server, it redirects them to the off-site server, which checks the credentials. This works for authentication, but not for authorization. It would be easiest to add a vpn_users group or is_vpn_user attribute on the off-site server, but, well, that's above my pay grade. Is there any way I can use the local server to control whether users have access to the VPN without needing to change the off-site server? If I could somehow use it to have a local vpn_users group without the users in it having to be located on the local server, that would probably work, but I have no idea how to set that up or if LDAP even supports such a configuration. For reference, I'm using the openvpn-auth-ldap (https://code.google.com/p/openvpn-auth-ldap/) plugin.

  • Safely remove external USB drive fails due to $extend

    When connecting an external USB 3.0 hard drive to my USB 3.0 ports I can never safely remove it. Somehow windows always keeps the journal files open: "Always" as in this time I only connected the drive, copied a 10GB VM and wanted to disconnect it afterwards (like 15 minutes after copying, so all copying was done). As you can see there is no other program keeping a handle on the disk besides System. I tried restarting explorer.exe as well as RemoveDrive.exe from Uwe Sieber. No luck, the locks on the hard drive always remain. My only solution is just unplugging it (whereas I'm afraid of damaging the data?) or restarting the computer (always helps, doesn't it?). Might it have something to do with me only having a SSD hard drive and the external disk is a regular drive? Might it have something to do with the USB 3.0 drivers (NEC Electronics USB Hub)? I never have this problem when using the regular USB 2.0 ports. Any ideas on how to properly unmount the disk?

My Problem is: - I want to use a virtual desktop or resolution expander for windows 7 - I want to multiply per 2 a window resolution (i.e. seeing only 25% of one window on a screen) I tried simple tricks that didn't work for me, and installed a virtual desktop (Dexspot, a great one), but I can't manage to strech a window (Google chrome) over the 4 desktops simultaneously.     i live in a university campus and i can get wifi signal on the outside of my window but not in the house. The solution i use at the moment is a usb wifi dongle outside connected to my laptop but the lack of an internal antenna make the connection quite unreliable at times. So i was trying to find another solution to improve the reception of my network. One idea is to setup a router on the outside (in a place with stronger signal) and redirect the connection inside the house with an ethernet cable but the problem is that our Uni Wifi is managed by a capitve portal (BlueSocket with DNS redirection to login page) and the authentication has to happen on the mac address that connect to the net (so the client appliance in this case). If I use a router with Mac-Clone capability i will be able to be redirected trough the captive portal on my laptop computer and login from there or i need to setup my router to fill in the login page by itself? There are other hardware/software solutions i can use to get what i want? Thank you all

    Is it possible to set timeout directives within a location block to prevent nginx returning a 504 from a long running PHP script (PHP-FPM? location /myurlsegment/ { client_body_timeout 1000000; send_timeout 1000000; fastcgi_read_timeout 1000000; } This has no effect when making a request to example.com/myurlsegment. The timeout occurs after approximately 60 seconds. PHP is configured to allow the script to run until completion (set_time_limit(0)) I don't want to set a global timeout for all scripts.

If I purchase a wireless N router, with greater range than my current G router will the range of the wireless G signal go as far as the wireless N signal? I say this because Wireless N routers are supposed to be compatible with wireless G devices. Is the wireless G a lesser signal coming out of the router? Sorry if I confused you, I am a little confused myself.

  • ListView item won't extend width to fill_parent

    I have a custom ViewGroup that inflates a ListView from an xml layout. The list item layout is inflated from another xml file. All of the views are set to fill_parent. The ListView fills its parent, but the ListView items don't. I've tried putting the ListView in a LinearLayout and assigning weight to it. Tried RelativeLayout as well. Also, I've built the ListView programmaticaly, without using the xml layout. Even changed the LayoutParams before adding the view to the ViewGroup. I've also taken in consideration these posts as well: Width of clickable area in ListView w/ onListItemClick, In Android, how can I set a ListView item's height and width?, Android Listview width prob. Any ideas to why the items don't extend to fill width? And how to extend them?     Hi, say I have this class: class animal { function noise() { print 'woof'; } function move() { print 'moved'; } } class dog extends animal { } What I would like to do is when i run $dog-noise() or $dog-move(), it would run something first prior to calling animal class's noise/move.     Hi Folks, I'm curious what would be the best practice to extend the Date constructor. The problem I'm facing is, that the Internet Explorer (< 7+8) can't parse a date like new Date('2010-05-11'); I have to admit that this is not a standard method to parse, anyways FireFox and Chrome perform well on that kind of date string. Now I'm wondering, should I just split/parse/rebuild the string before calling new Date() or is there a more elegant solution ?
