• Windows 7 Internet Sharing - How to have simultaneous Internet Access to my client

  The condition: I'm running on windows 7, I'm using a usb broad band for my computer, then my computer is connected to the router tp-link tl-wr340g (in this sense my computer is the internet source since my router has no usb port for this type of broad band). I set the broad band to have internet sharing. I got 3-4 client connected through the router. The problem is whenever a client is using the internet, other clients including me don't have internet connection, additionally, If I have the internet access other clients don't have internet access. In my setup in windows XP (bridging the broad band and the router network) it works perfectly fine, every one has simultaneous internet. To clarify, how can I have all clients including me have internet connection simultaneously in my windows 7 OS? //Additionally, the create "network bridge" setup is missing, from this link the "Bridge Connection is missing", how can I fix that?

The Debian laptop was rebooted many times and between each attempt, with and without the script auto-executing via /etc/rc.local. While adding the iptables-restore command to that file I disabled the script.

• Sharing iTunes Library Between Mac & PC Via A NAS

  Hi Everyone, I'd be really grateful if anyone can help me with this, I spent literally days trawling the net before I came across this site, which seems to have very knowledgable people! So, the problem is: For years I've had a couple of PCs and a NAS drive. I've been storing all my music on the NAS drive and then accessing the library on whichever PC I wanted to by pointing both PCs to the NAS drive iTunes files. The good thing is I can see all my playlists and song ratings etc. Now, I've just bought a Macbook Pro as well. And I want to be able to access the same music, song ratings etc on this machine. I've tried simply holding down option and navigating to the .itl files that my Windows machine created, but that doesn't work. Is there some way to use the same iTunes Library (apart from home sharing) on both machines? Thank you so much for reading this.

• batch file infinite loop when parsing file

  Okay, this should be a really simple task but its proving to be more complicated than I think it should be. I'm clearly doing something wrong, and would like someone else's input. What I would like to do is parse through a file containing paths to directories and set permissions on those directories. An example line of the input file. There are several lines, all formatted the same way, with a different path to a directory. E:\stuff\Things\something else (X)\ (The file in question is generated under Cygwin using find to list all directories with "(X)" in the name. The file is then passed through unix2win to make it windows compatible. I've also tried manually creating the input file from within windows to rule out the file's creation method as the problem.) Here's where I'm stuck... I wrote the following quick and dirty batch file in Windows XP and it worked without any issues at all, but it will not work in server 2k8. Batch file code to run through the file and set permissions: FOR /F "tokens=*" %%A IN (dirlist.txt) DO echo y| cacls "%%A" /T /C /G "Domain Admins":f "Some Group":f "some-security-group":f What this is SUPPOSED to do (and does in XP) is loop through the specified file (dirlist.txt) and run cacls.exe on each directory it pulls from the file. The "echo y|" is in there to automagically confirm when cacls helpfully asks "are you sure?" for every directory in the list. Unfortunately, however, what it DOES is fall into an infinite loop. I've tried surrounding everything after "DO" with quotes, which prevents the endless loop but confuses cacls so it throws an error. Interestingly, I've tried running the code from after "DO" manually (obviously replacing the variable with the full path, copied straight from the file) at a command prompt and it runs as expected. I don't think it's the file or the loop, as adding quotes to the command to be executed prevents the loop from continuing past where it's supposed to... I really have no idea at this point. Any help would be appreciated. I have a feeling it's going to be something increadibly stupid... but I'm pulling my hair out so I thought I'd ask.

• Windows file sharing connects over WiFi instead of LAN

  I have a laptop and a desktop computer, and I need to sync lots of files to the laptop and back whenever I go on a trip, etc. I've got a LAN cable connected into an extra port on the desktop that I plug into the laptop so I can get gigabit file transfers instead of wireless G. They connect fine. If I do an FTP transfer, for instance, using the LAN IP addresses, it goes at ~40MB/s, as it should. However when I copy files using explorer and native windows file sharing it detects the other computer by name, not IP (eg \\DESKTOP-PC\ instead of \\192.168.0.100\) and always connects to it by its wireless IP address instead of the faster LAN address. Both computers are running Windows 7. I have tried editing the priorities of the adapters in Advanced Settings and putting the LAN adapters above the wifi ones, but this didn't have any effect

• Why is file sharing over internet still working, despite all firewall exceptions for filesharing being disabled?

  Every exception in my windows server firewall that starts with "File and Printer Sharing" is disabled (ordered by name, so that includes domain, public (active), and private profiles). The Network and Sharing Center's options for everything except password protected sharing are off. Why would I still be able to access a network share on that server via an address like "\\my.server.com\" over the internet? The firewall is on for all profiles and blocking incoming connections by default. A "netstat -an" command on the server reveals the share connection is occurring over port 445 (SMB). I restarted the client to ensure it was actually re-establishing a new connection successfully. Is the "Password protected sharing: On" option in Network and Sharing Center bypassing the firewall restrictions, or adding some other exception somewhere that I'm missing? EDIT: "Custom" rules are not the problem. It's the "built-in" rules for Terminal Services that was the problem. Can you believe port 445 (File Sharing Port) has to be wide open to the internet to use Terminal Services Licensing?)

My pc is conected to the same wi-fi than my apple tv. I have the latest software. I have my firewall off. I turned off and on my router. Search for iphone, ipad remotes on, sharing my library on my local network on, in itunes. Ive checked that my id was the same. On top of that the Remote app doesnt seem to work either.   Dear friends, Please tell me whether it is possible for someone on the external network to see the network folder shares of an internal LAN network in DHCP (192.168.x.x) through a Comp-A on an external network in DHCP (123.123.x.x) both networks are on different subnets but Comp-A has access to both networks and can see all the shared drives of both the internal and external networks using firewall is not an option because file sharing is required everywhere. care is taken from viruses/trojans... remote desktop etc is disabled on Comp-A Please let me know.   What's the most dependable way to share files and folders on a OS X to Windows (I'm using 7). I've followed this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1812 However, this method does not seem dependable (Works only some of the time). My Macbook does not always show up under the Network on Windows. On certain occasions, turning off windows file sharing completely (in OS X preferences), restarting my Macbook and turning it back on helps. Is there any reason why this is happening? Is there an alternative method?

• Online FTP or file sharing service [on hold]

  We need to share large files with clients, e.g. clients upload a large file, we modify it and later make it available for download. Up until now we've used FTP but this has a number of drawbacks. A lot of management of files and setting up accounts etc. We are therefore considering online alternatives. Requirements: Cheap, 8-) Easy to use, ideally just requiring a web browser, but also possible for power users to connect e.g. via FTPS/SFTP No registration requried for users to upload/download files. We ourselves of course need to be able to login an view uploaded files and upload new files. No per user fee High bandwidth. As files may be GBs in size both upload and download speed cannot be too slow Secure. Encryption during upload/download. No way for users to access uploaded files. Once a user has uploaded a file they (or anyone else besides us) should be able to access the file. To download files users get a link with a password. Ideally the link expires after a set time. No software installation We do NOT need any sync features, backup, versioning etc. Just a quick, easy, secure way for us to share files with our clients. Services like JustCloud, DriveHQ etc seems bloated and "too much" for what we need. What other alternatives exist? Thanks!

• File corruption after copying files in Windows 7 64 bit using two methods

  I have 5000 pictures and other files in a directory taking up 35 GB. I want to duplicate this directory. Method 1: I do a simple copy and paste of the directory in explorer. I have the habit of checking the checksums after copying important files. In this case I noticed that around 2000 files failed the MD5 test. At a closer inspection of a randomly chosen JPEG with different checksums it turns out that some XMP metadata had changed. In particular, the tag <MicrosoftPhoto:DateAcquired> had changed the date from 2009 to today (possibly around the time I was copying the files). I have no idea what triggered this XMP data to be changed and exactly when it was changed and why for these particular files, but at least it seems to explain the checksum discrepancy. Method 2: As I want the exact files to be duplicated, I tried the program FreeFileSync to mirror the directory, hoping no XMP metadata would mysteriously change. A checksum test in addition to a thorough file comparison test in FreeFileSync lead to two similar but yet different results: 31 files fail the checksum test, 23 files fail the file comparison test. The smaller set is not entirely contained in the bigger set, although many files occur in both. What is alarming here is that not only JPEGs are flagged as altered but also som AVIs, MPGs and a large 7-zip file. Closer inspection of a JPEG indicates that it is indeed corrupt: the bottom half of the picture is simply plain gray. Due to the size of the 7-zip file, I have not been able to pin down the discrepancy. Note, in both methods, every file has its correct file size after being copied. Question: Any thoughts on what is possibly going on here? I have never had this problem before, and I am now terrified that files get corrupted after simple actions like copy/paste and file sync. Even if I manage to successfully copy the files somehow, I would still like an explanation to this.

However, getting all three of them to communicate with each other can be a bit of a challenge. Today we’ve put together a guide that will help you share files and printers in whatever scenario of the three versions you might encounter on your home network. Sharing Between Windows 7 and XP The most common scenario you’re probably going to run into is sharing between Windows 7 and XP.  Essentially you’ll want to make sure both machines are part of the same workgroup, set up the correct sharing settings, and making sure network discovery is enabled on Windows 7. The biggest problem you may run into is finding the correct printer drivers for both versions of Windows. Share Files and Printers Between Windows 7 & XP  Map a Network Drive Another method of sharing data between XP and Windows 7 is mapping a network drive. If you don’t need to share a printer and only want to share a drive, then you can just map an XP drive to Windows 7. Although it might sound complicated, the process is not bad. The trickiest part is making sure you add the appropriate local user. This will allow you to share the contents of an XP drive to your Windows 7 computer. Map a Network Drive from XP to Windows 7 Sharing between Vista and Windows 7 Another scenario you might run into is having to share files and printers between a Vista and Windows 7 machine. The process is a bit easier than sharing between XP and Windows 7, but takes a bit of work. The Homegroup feature isn’t compatible with Vista, so we need to go through a few different steps. Depending on what your printer is, sharing it should be easier as Vista and Windows 7 do a much better job of automatically locating the drivers. How to Share Files and Printers Between Windows 7 and Vista Sharing between Vista and XP When Windows Vista came out, hardware requirements were intensive, drivers weren’t ready, and sharing between them was complicated due to the new Vista structure. The sharing process is pretty straight-forward if you’re not using password protection…as you just need to drop what you want to share into the Vista Public folder. On the other hand, sharing with password protection becomes a bit more difficult. Basically you need to add a user and set up sharing on the XP machine. But once again, we have a complete tutorial for that situation. Share Files and Folders Between Vista and XP Machines Sharing Between Windows 7 with Homegroup If you have one or more Windows 7 machine, sharing files and devices becomes extremely easy with the Homegroup feature. It’s as simple as creating a Homegroup on on machine then joining the other to it. It allows you to stream media, control what data is shared, and can also be password protected. If you don’t want to make your Windows 7 machines part of the same Homegroup, you can still share files through the Public Folder, and setup a printer to be shared as well.   Use the Homegroup Feature in Windows 7 to Share Printers and Files Create a Homegroup & Join a New Computer To It Change which Files are Shared in a Homegroup Windows Home Server If you want an ultimate setup that creates a centralized location to share files between all systems on your home network, regardless of the operating system, then set up a Windows Home Server. It allows you to centralize your important documents and digital media files on one box and provides easy access to data and the ability to stream media to other machines on your network. Not only that, but it provides easy backup of all your machines to the server, in case disaster strikes. How to Install and Setup Windows Home Server How to Manage Shared Folders on Windows Home Server Conclusion The biggest annoyance is dealing with printers that have a different set of drivers for each OS. There is no real easy way to solve this problem. Our best advice is to try to connect it to one machine, and if the drivers won’t work, hook it up to the other computer and see if that works. Each printer manufacturer is different, and Windows doesn’t always automatically install the correct drivers for the device.   We're running a website which enables users to download documents about our company, such as: -wallpapers with the company logo. -company logos in various flavours. -media kits in pdf format. Since these files are quite big in size (some reach 1MB), we no longer want them to be downloaded from our website directly as it's consuming our bandwidth. Accordingly we've been looking into document sharing services. For instance we found Scribd which could allow us to share pdf files, but not our wallpapers and logos which are in png format. Is there a free service we can use for our users to reliably download any type of files we want to host? (ideally on a service which allows users to easily browse through our files).

  Hello Currently my job is to make websites with Django. I use many things like virtualenv, PIL, etc. The problem is, I can't stand Linux on my desktop. I like it on servers, It's greate to use it over the SSH. But for desktop? No way. But for the development Linux is quite essential. Of course almost everything is ported to Windows, but it's not as simple to use as in Linux. For example, Windows shell is awful in comparison with Linux. So I've tried Cygwin, but it's too damn slow. Every time django dev server reloads, it tooks almost 20-30 seconds. In comparison, then using "native" python on Windows or Linux, it reloads instantly. Even worse, Cygwin makes all my system very slow. I've been thinking about it and have thought up a way to go. I can share a folder with my application with some Linux box. The devserver and everything will run on that box, while I'll be happy editing files and running the browser on my Windows 7. SSH shell is much quickier and handy than Cygwin. Currently there are no Linux boxes in my home network (except for my android phone :) but I have several VDS boxes with Debian. So, how do I share a Windows folder with VDS box? I can't rely on my desktop IP but I can rely on the VDS's one. I need sharing to be as quick as possible (well, 2-3 seconds ping is OK) and "native" for both systems, so I could use a folder like a normal folder in both Windows and Linux.

  i'm trying to access the shares on a server. The credential box appears, and i enter in a correct username and password, and i get access denied. • VPN sharing on Mac OS X 10.5 machine

  I have a rather weird problem. I want to share a VPN connection that has been established by my Mac OS X 10.5 computer with another machine in my network. This is what I did: In the /etc/hostcongig file on the main computer I added the line: IPFORWARDING=-YES- I assigned a fixed IP address to my computer (192.168.178.30), a fixed one to the other machine (192.168.178.60) and my computer's IP address as gateway on the other machine. I connected to my VPN using the internal Mac OS X VPN client (PPTP connection) I run this script: #!/bin/sh natd -same_ports -use_sockets -unregistered_only -dynamic -interface ppp0 -clamp_mss ipfw -f flush ipfw add divert natd ip from any to any via ppp0 ipfw add pass all from any to any sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1 Source: Using (and sharing) a VPN connection on your Mac Now everthing works smootly, however speed is an issue. I get 1,8 MBit/s on my main machine and only 0,3 - 0,6 MBit/s on the other one. My question: What could possibly be wrong? Do I have to tweak MTU settings, is there any packet inspection ongoing that needs time....? Any help appreciated!

Here is a brief description of the computers involved and the issues I have encountered: 1: Dell desktop, Windows Vista Business-- This is the computer I want the others to connect to. It has a USB printer and eSATA hard drive enclosure that I have set up for sharing, with different accounts for the various users. 2: Fujitsu laptop, Windows XP Tablet edition-- No problems. Can connect to both the shared printer and hard drive. 3: Lenovo laptop, Windows Vista Business 64 bit-- No problems. Can connect to both the shared printer and drive. 4: Apple MacBook, OS 10.4-- Can connect to the shared drive, but not to the shared printer. I am aware that the printer issue is due to a known incompatibility between Vista and OS 10.4 and earlier with regards to Samba. It is not a big problem, however, as this computer can access a network printer. 5: Sony laptop, Windows Vista Home Premium-- Can connect to the shared printer, but not the shared drive. It can see computer 1 and its shared drive on the network, and appears to successfully log in to user accounts. However, if you try to access the shared drive, it says you do not have permission. I have tried both standard and administrator accounts, and none can access the drive from this computer. 6: MacBook Pro, OS 10.5 (there are two of these)-- Can connect to the shared printer, but not the shared drive. They can't see computer 1 on the network. For that matter, they also can't see each other or the older Mac, but can see and access shared folders on the XP machine (computer 2) and can see other PCs in the building. I was able to add the shared printer manually by typing in its network location, but was unable to manually add the shared drive in the same way. So, what I am looking for is suggestions on how to get computers 5 and 6 to connect to the shared drive. Since they can already connect to the shared printer (which is on the same computer as the shared drive), it seems reasonable that they should be able to access the drive as well.

• Why is Samba Access from Windows So Slow?

  I have set up a file server using Ubuntu 12.04 Server. The purpose is to serve several network drives to Windows users that have heretofore been served by numerous NAS drives. I have Samba set up with one share defined so far. I can connect to it fine from my test Windows 7 and Windows XP machines. When I do a directory listing on the share from Windows, it can take up to two minutes to get all the files listed--would have taken about 1.5 seconds when I was using the Buffalo NAS. Sometimes it times out with no response at all. I have used the default smb.conf and simply added the following for the share I have set up so far: [engineering] comment = Ubuntu File Server Share path = /networkdriveshares/engineering browsable = yes guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0755 I have tried changing the workgroup setting to the Active Domain name our Windows computer use but didn't notice any difference. The only other change I made to the default smb.conf was adding in the recommended socket settings: SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 socket options = TCP_NODELAY Lots of information about slow Samba shares online but I have tried all of the solutions I have found and none have made a lick of difference. If there is no solution, is there a better way to set up a file server to be used by Windows clients?

• Make a file non-deletable in USB

  Somebody used my USB drive and upon returning it to me, I found a autorun.inf that is undeletable. I tried changing it's file attribute which is only H (not even set as a system file) but it keeps on saying Access Denied. The USB is set on FAT32, upon asking my friend, he told me that he uses Panda USB Vaccine http://research.pandasecurity.com/Panda-USB-and-AutoRun-Vaccine/ How do they do this? Im trying to use some Disk Sector editor but have no idea which hex file they change to make this kind of file and make it deletable again. Formatting the drive removes it, but I'm curious as to how to be able to set those kind of file attribute.

• Windows EFS file sharing anomaly

  Fyi, I can confirm this happening in Windows Vista (Business) and Windows 7 Professional in WORKGROUP mode (as both a client and a server). I am not totally sure if this is a Superuser question or a ServerFault question. So there are two PCs, let's call them C (client) and S (server). Both servers have a user called U with the same password. Both C and S has the same private/public key pair for EFS. S shares a folder F with U given full permission. Also locally, the user U has the full permission on F. Now, U, from C, connects to F at the server S, everything works totally fine. I can read,write, delete files and create/delete folders in S. Things go weird from here. I encrypt the folder F in S. I can delete/modify files fine (so the files in F decrypted OK). However, U from C, cannot create a folder, or create a file getting Access Denied. But this Access Denied is very special. It takes over 10 seconds at C to receive the error and the explorer freezes while trying to create a folder, eventually returning error. In S, I can watch the folder created at the same time, and what I see is "New Folder" blinking like crazy and eventually disappearing when the client receives the error. i.e. it's created and deleted in a really rapid manner. What I do not understand is that permissions look fine, I can modify/delete files, and it looks like there is no problem with EFS because I can read/write files fine. Yet it fails to create a file or a folder. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, wbkang
