  • Comparing Nginx+PHP-FPM to Apache-mod_php

    - by Rushi
I'm running Drupal and trying to figure out the best stack to serve it. Apache + mod_php or Nginx + PHP-FPM I used ApacheBench (ab) and Siege to test both setups and I'm seeing Apache performing better. This surprises me a little bit since I've heard a lot of good things about Nginx + PHP-FPM. My current Nginx setup is something that is a bit out of the box, and the same goes for PHP-FPM What optimizations I can make to speed up the Nginx + PHP-FPM combo over Apache and mo_php ? In my tests using ab, Apache is outperforming Nginx significantly (higher requets/second and finishing tests much faster) I've googled around a bit, but since I've never using Nginx, PHP-FPM or FastCGI, I don't exactly know where to start PHP v5.2.13, Drupal v6, latest PHP-FPM and Nginx compiled from source. Apache v2.0.63 ApacheBench Nginx + PHP-FPM Server Software: nginx/0.7.67 Server Hostname: test2.com Server Port: 80 Concurrency Level: 25 ---> Time taken for tests: 158.510008 seconds Complete requests: 1000 Failed requests: 0 Write errors: 0 ---> Requests per second: 6.31 [#/sec] (mean) Time per request: 3962.750 [ms] (mean) Time per request: 158.510 [ms] (mean, across all concurrent requests) Transfer rate: 181.38 [Kbytes/sec] received ApacheBench Apache using mod_php Server Software: Apache/2.0.63 Server Hostname: test1.com Server Port: 80 Concurrency Level: 25 --> Time taken for tests: 63.556663 seconds Complete requests: 1000 Failed requests: 0 Write errors: 0 --> Requests per second: 15.73 [#/sec] (mean) Time per request: 1588.917 [ms] (mean) Time per request: 63.557 [ms] (mean, across all concurrent requests) Transfer rate: 103.94 [Kbytes/sec] received

  • anyone doing php-fpm and APC? cache files missing in /tmp

    - by Vangel
I have been using xcache for a long time. Recently I put together php-fpm and nginx. I see apc is installed and enabled in the configuration. I was assuming that apc will automatically opcode the files and store it somewhere. According to config it should be in /tmp/apx.xxxx but there is no such thing there. What am i missing? any clues to investigate would be of much help. Please note I am using php 5.3 fpm. thanks mates. UPDATE: i looked at apc.php it says things are fine. will just have to take its word for it.

  • Apache + SuExec + php-fpm - how to set them up?

    - by FractalizeR
Hello. I wonder if there is a good guide on how to setup Apache + SuExec + php-fpm? I have a server which I am going to use several separate website. So, I need php to be run as site-owner user. As I can see, php-fpm is a little different from php-fcgi. Is there a need in mod_fcgid from Apache in this case? How to set this all up? For now my site is running Apache + mod_suphp + php-cgi, so... it's good, but a little slow. I want to preserve security and gain an ability to use APC.

  • How to fix SCRIPT_NAME with PHP-FPM and Apache's mod_fastcgi?

    - by Kyle MacFarlane
I have the following in my Apache conf to get PHP-FPM working: FastCgiExternalServer /srv/www/fast-cgi-fake-handler -host 127.0.0.1:9000 AddHandler php-fastcgi .php AddType text/html .php Action php-fastcgi /var/www/cgi-bin Alias /var/www/cgi-bin /srv/www/fast-cgi-fake-handler DirectoryIndex index.php This works fine except that SCRIPT_NAME is always /var/www/cgi-bin and some scripts use SCRIPT_NAME to work out the location of the current script (vBulletin). Google has plenty of solutions for Nginx but not a word for Apache.

  • How do I enable PHP’s flush() with nginx+PHP-FPM?

    - by abrahamvegh
I’m using nginx with PHP-FPM (APC is installed). I need PHP’s flush() to work. Is this possible? Things I’ve tried so far: Disabling all output buffering in php.ini, as well as output compression. Disabling gzip in nginx’s configuration. Setting nginx’s fastcgi_* buffering settings and fastcgi_max_temp_file_size to zero. I’m sure I must be missing something, since I’ve run across many posts here and elsewhere where people claimed they’ve got it working, but I’m having no luck, it would seem.

I have problems with installing PHP and in Ubuntu. I followed the instructions on the PHP-FPM site, PHP FastCGI Process Manager but when doing ../configure && make to compile PHP I got a lot of not found messages (listed below), and I don't know how to fix them. I tried both the Integrated compilation and Separate compilation but both compilations ends up with the same messages. Is there a solution or workaround? • nginx, php-fpm, and multiple roots - how to properly try_files?

    - by Carson C.
    I have a server context which is rooted in a login application. The login application handles, well, logins, and then returns a redirect to "/app" on the same server if a login is successful. The application is rooted elsewhere, which is handled by the location block shown here: location ^~ /app { alias /usr/share/nginx/www/website.com/content/public; location ~ \.php$ { try_files $uri =404; fastcgi_pass unix:/tmp/php5-fpm.sock; include fastcgi_params; } } This works just fine, however the $uri getting passed to PHP still contains /app, even though I am using alias rather than root. Because of this, the try_files directive fails to a 404 unless I link app -> ./ in /usr/share/nginx/www/website.com/content/public. It's obviously silly to have that link in there, and if that link ever gets lost, bam dead website without an obvious cause. The next thing I tried... Was to remove the try_files directive entirely. This allowed me to rm the app link in my /public folder, and PHP had no problem locating the file and executing it. I used that to dump my $_SERVER global from PHP, and found that "SCRIPT_FILENAME" => "/usr/share/nginx/www/website.com/content/public/index.php" when the browser URI is /app. This is exactly right. Based on my fastcgi_params below, this led me to beleive that try_files $request_filename =404; should work, but no dice. nginx still doesn't find the file, and returns 404. So for right now, it will only work without any try_files directive. PHP finds the file, whereas try_files could not. I understand this may be a PHP security risk. Can anyone indicate how to move forward? The nginx logs don't contain anything relating to the failed try_files attempt, as far as I can see. fastcgi_aparams fastcgi_param QUERY_STRING $query_string; fastcgi_param REQUEST_METHOD $request_method; fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type; fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $request_filename; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_NAME $fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param REQUEST_URI $request_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_URI $document_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_ROOT $document_root; fastcgi_param SERVER_PROTOCOL $server_protocol; fastcgi_param GATEWAY_INTERFACE CGI/1.1; fastcgi_param SERVER_SOFTWARE nginx/$nginx_version; fastcgi_param REMOTE_ADDR $remote_addr; fastcgi_param REMOTE_PORT $remote_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_ADDR $server_addr; fastcgi_param SERVER_PORT $server_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_NAME $server_name; fastcgi_param HTTPS $server_https;

  • Memory usages in Linux drops frequently

    - by FunkyChicken
I run a CentOS 5.6 (64bit) machine that has Nginx (latest version) running, with php-fpm (latest version). Things run very well, but since about 2 weeks I noticed in my Munin graphs that about every 2 hours the 'cache' usages drops. Before it used be a steady fully graph, that didn't seem to reset every so often. PHP-FPM settings: pm.max_children = 300 daemonize = yes pm = static listen = /tmp/fpm.sock pm.max_requests = 1000 I have checked the php-fpm.log, and about once per 5 seconds a child process is killed, and restarted. But this is all the time, so this does not explain the sudden drops. I only run Nginx, PHP (via fpm), Munin and vsftpd on this machine. No crons run at exactly the time of the drops. My question: What could be causing these drops in cache usage?

  • PHP-FPM - Nginx - phpMyAdmin - 502 bad gateway

    - by Jesse
I have installed and configured PHP-FPM, Nginx, and then phpMyAdmin. When I access the main site everything works fine but as soon as I go to http://mysite.com/phpmyadmin I get a 502 bad gateway error. When I look in my error logs I see the following error repeated throughout: (111: Connection refused) while connecting to upstream, client: xx.xx.xx.xx Here is my default.conf for nginx: http://pastebin.com/YFEvAw81 I have tried many different configurations that I have found from users that have had the same issue but can't seem to get any of them to work.

  • Can't use PHP extension Mcrypt in Ubuntu 13.10 (Nginx, PHP-FPM)

    - by Marc-François
I installed a fresh Ubuntu 13.10 on my laptop. Like I usually do, I install the packages I need for Web development, which are nginx, php5-fpm, mysql, php5-mysql, php5-mcrypt and a few others. After editing some configuration files, this usually works. But today, since 13.10, an error appears instead of the Web page I expected. Laravel requires the Mcrypt PHP extension. The package php5-mcrypt has been installed and reinstalled. The command php -m doesn't seem to show mcrypt. Any idea where the problem could come from? I've done this setup many times and it always worked.

  • Switching from prefork MPM to worker MPM + php-fpm on ubuntu

    - by Shane
All tutorials I found were how to fresh install worker MPM + PHP-FPM, since my wordpress blog's already up and running with prefork MPM, correct me if I'm wrong in the simulated installation process: I'm on ubuntu and according to some tutorials, the following lines would do all the tricks: apt-get install apache2-mpm-worker libapache2-mod-fastcgi php5-fpm php5-gd a2enmod actions fastcgi alias Then you setup configuration in /etc/apache2/conf.d/php5-fpm.conf: <IfModule mod_fastcgi.c> AddHandler php5-fcgi .php Action php5-fcgi /php5-fcgi Alias /php5-fcgi /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5-fcgi FastCgiExternalServer /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5-fcgi -host 127.0.0.1:9000 -pass-header Authorization </IfModule> After all these, restart: service apache2 restart && service php5-fpm restart Question: 1) Would it cause any down time in the whole process for previously running sites with prefork MPM? 2) Do you have to change any already existent configuration files like php or mysql or apache2(would they take effect immediately after the switch without you doing anything)? 3) I've already have apc up and running, do you have to re-install/re-configure it after the switch? 4) How do you find out if apache2 is working in worker MPM mode as expected? Thanks a lot!

  • Do PHP-FPM (and other PHP handlers) need execute permissions on the PHP files they're serving?

    - by Andrew Cheong
I read in a post at Server Fault that PHP-FPM needs execute permissions. However, the answer in When creating a website, what permissions and directory structure? only grants read and write permissions to PHP-FPM. Maybe I don't quite understand how PHP handlers (or CGI in general) work, but the two claims seem contradictory to me. As I understand, when Apache / Nginx gets a request for foobar.php, it "passes" the file to an appropriate handler. That is, I imagine it's as if www-root (or apache or whomever the webserver's running as) were to run some command, /usr/sbin/php-fpm foobar.php Actually, no, that's naive, I just realized. PHP-FPM must be a running instance (if it's to be performant, and cache, etc.), so probably PHP-FPM is just being told, "Hey, quick, process this file for me!" In either case, I don't see why execute permissions are necessary. It's not like the webserver needs to literally execute the file, i.e. ./foobar.php Is the Server Fault answer simply mistaken?

  • Setup secure shared hosting (Apache, PHP, MySQL)

    - by Apaz
So I'm setting up a shared hosting with Apache, PHP, MySQL and the biggest question mark is how to do with PHP, since there is a million options out there how to configure it securely. The plan is: Chroot for MySQL (built in support for chroot) Chroot for Apache (mod_security) Each user executing their PHP-scripts as their own user (see below) Set open_basedir Disable all "evil" php-functions (allow_url_fopen, system, exec, and so on) Ive looked at suexec and suphp but they seems very slow; http://blog.stuartherbert.com/php/2007/12/18/using-suexec-to-secure-a-shared-server/ http://blog.stuartherbert.com/php/2008/01/18/using-suphp-to-secure-a-shared-server/ So I've looked some more and found some other solutions: apache2-mpm-itk + mod_php(?) mod_fcgid + php-fpm mod_fastcgi + php-fpm Ive tried a simple setup with mod_fastcgi + php-fpm and it seems to work, runs as correct user and so on, but the protection against directory traveling is still open_basedir(?) One solution for that could be to use php-fpm's chroot option, but that causes a lot of other issues like domain name resolver does not work sending mail does not work Tips?

  • 504 Gateway Time-out after php fatal error

    - by tiagojsag
I'm using nginx and php-fpm to develop a symfony2 based website, under ubuntu 12.10 (yes, I know I'm using a beta OS). Everything was working out fine until, due to an error on my code, I called an unexisting function, and got the following: Fatal error: Call to a member function (....) This isn't a problem (it's a bug in my code, easily fixable), but after this, no other page loads. My browser just keeps trying to load the page from the webserver, until nginx timeouts (after +- 30s, which should be some default timeout) and returns: 504 Gateway Time-out Restarting php-fpm solves the issue. Nginx logs show a timeout message, and nothing appears on php-fpm logs, even if I set them to debug level. I tried switching from fpm to fastcgi, and the same thing happens. I've looked around, but all similar error are related to big requests/file handling, which isn't the case. All the pages on my website load in a few seconds, even under development conditions (no caching, etc).

  • How can I use PHP Mail() function within PHP-FPM? On Nginx?

    - by TheBlackBenzKid
I have searched everywhere for this and I really want to resolve this. In the past I just end up using an SMTP service like SendGrid for PHP and a mailing plugin like SwiftMailer. However I want to use PHP. Basically my setup (I am new to server setup, and this is my personal setup following a tutorial) Nginx Rackspace Cloud PHP 5.3 PHP-FPM Ubuntu 11.04 My phpinfo() returns this about the Mail entries: mail.log no value mail.add_x_header On mail.force_extra_parameters no value sendmail_from no value sendmail_path /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i SMTP localhost smtp_port 25 Can someone help me to as why Mail() will not work - my script is working on all other sites, it is a normal mail command. Do I need to setup logs or enable some PHP port on the server? My Sample script <? # FORMS VARS // $to = $customers_email; // $to = $customers_email; $to = $_GET["customerEmailFromForm"]; $subject = "Thank you for contacting Real-Domain.com"; $message = " <html> <head> </head> <body> Thanks, your message was sent and our team will be in touch shortly. <img src='http://cdn.com/emails/thank_you.jpg' /> </body> </html> "; $headers = "MIME-Version: 1.0" . Found functions that did DB queries in php-fpm slowlog were taking over 1s to complete at times Found some simple queries in mysql slowlog taking well over 1s to complete that should take less than 1s. Most interesting - execution time seems to spike at times. A query will take .2s a couple times, then one time it will take 8s to run the same query. These results were verified by running raw SQL queries through mysql command line. Top does not reveal anything too interesting Only resource related thing i can see is load averages much higher than normal Up until today, mysql has been fine, there have been no major changes to the db since yesterday. Sometimes things are so bad, I am seeing bad gateway errors after 60s of execution time. Innodb is doing on average 300-1400 reads/sec. Mysql is doing 3-10 queries/sec slow query count in 2 hours uptime is 171 (with slow timeout at 1 second) Tried restarting mysql, nginx, php-fpm multiple times For example: UPDATE `catalogsearch_query` SET `query_text` = 'EW 90', `num_results` = '7532', `popularity` = '99180', `redirect` = NULL, `synonym_for` = NULL, `store_id` = '1', `display_in_terms` = '1', `is_active` = '1', `is_processed` = '1', `updated_at` = '2012-05-08 21:38:31' WHERE (query_id='31'); This query took 17sec to complete one time, rest of the time around .079 sec. But varies, sometimes 1sec, sometimes .004 sec. This is running the same query, over and over with a couple seconds time in between each. Most tables are innodb, and sometimes I noticed the lock time taking 90% of the query execution time, but most of the time lock time is insignificant. Any idea what's going on here?

  • PHP NOT EXECUTING IN PHP-FPM AND NGINX INSTALLATION

    - by nairobicoder
I am trying to set up nginx server to run a php app in debian. I followed this tutorial among others. Most seems the same. My recent configuration is based on the link above. When I try to run this php script, <?php phpinfo(); ?> I get the same output on the browser instead of php info result. Kindly someone help me figure out where I went wrong. Note: My error logs are clean, contains details on nginx server start only. Thank you.

  • PHP-APC Installation

    - by Leo
Trying to get my head around the way to install APC cache on PHP 5.3.13. That's a VPS with apache, configured preferably through whm/cpanel (although not only). I read a bunch of articles where it was suggested to use FastCGI with APC, as suPHP doens't do well with opcode caching, and fcgid_module doesn't do it right for APC either. Noted that fcgid_module is a newer package than FastCGI and that's what whm/cpanel installs for you but ok, that can be solved I guess. Then I'm reading that php-fpm is a much better alternative to manage the php processes, especially for APC. Ok. Then I realised that php-fpm is included in php core since 5.3 and got confused. Does that mean I don't have to use FastCGI/fcgid_module (and what should I use instead of them - mod_php or cgi?)? Or does that mean that I still need to get the older FastCGI module, and configure it to use one process per user (or just one process?)? Or would fcgid_module work as well? And how bad would it be just to go with mod_php/APC to avoid troubles of installing php-fpm and FastCGI (whm/cpanel doesn't support neither) given than Varnish would serve most of the static content anyway - no php process need to be created for static content. Any examples of their FastCGI/fcgid_module/php-fpm/APC configurations would be greatly appreciated as well.
