• Computer wont install Windows Vista or Windows 7

  I had Windows Vista on my computer and wanted to upgrade to Windows 7 and thought that I would format my computer since it had been awhile. When I installed Windows 7 it wouldnt let me it would go through all the installation and then when my computer rebooted it would just be black screen with my mouse, I have tried mulitpule times now, and have just gone backs to Windows Vista, this no longer works and does the same thing as when I tried to insta I have a Nvidia GTX 275 video card, ASUS m2N-E SLI mother board,and a AMD 5200 Dual core processor

• Should I get integrated graphics if I already have a dedicated GPU?

  I want to upgrade my computer to the new Sandy Bridge CPU's, which features integrated graphics. However, you have to choose between two types of chipsets: H67 or P67. Now since I already own a GTX 460, so is there any added value to using the integrated graphics? Would there be a way of 'disabling' my GPU when I don't need it's additional power or would the integrated graphics simply allow me to add another screen?

Is there some special trick to getting this to work with my card so I could have up to 4 monitors running? I don't really want to buy the adapter until I know that it will work (or not work as it may be).

• Alienware m15x (older model) BSOD investigation

  A frined of mine asked me to help him with an Alienware m15x laptop that had a little service history. It was bought in june 2008, serviced in january 2009 for a random fps drop problem, Alienware returned it saying nothing was wrong. The laptop still had hiccups, but after juggling a few drivers and settings, the fps drops weren't as noticeable. Eventually it died in Sept. 2009. It would not boot up locking itself on a white/gray screen. (i think it was overheating .. clocking in 100 degrees Celsius). So back to Alienware it went. They replaced the GPU and all was fine. Up until these blue screens started showing up. One other thing that was updated was the HDD and a Windows 7 reinstall, in August. From then on it seems to have started its BSOD. Could this be the culprit? Why? 0_o The original Windows was Vista but it was upgraded with a digital download/purchase of Windows 7 Home Premium and activated after installing windows. No errors on the old HDD, just on the latest installation. LE:Due note that now the old HDD is used to see if issues re-occur. So please, I am in need of someone who can interpret these windows dump files: Minidump I may have come to some conflicting conclusions. So if someone can clarify each dump/date and the probable cause/error it had; and a final conclusion or solution, we would be very grateful. • Can't install Ubuntu on a Z68xP-UD3p board

  I have tried to install Ubuntu version 10, 11 and 12 64 bit on my Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P motherboard using live CD and placing the DVD in the drive and starting the machine. When I go to install Ubuntu I get a dark screen and no text at all. When I go with Live CD I reboot and then I go right into the install from the boot menu and still get darkness. Nothing appears. I have a i7 intel CPU with Nvida Gefore GTX 560 Ti video board.

• Purple line on left side of screen when I use graphics card's hdmi port

  My graphics card is a nVidia GeForce GTX 660 2GB. When I plug HDMI into mobo it works fine. When I plug it into the graphics card (with 2nd monitor too) it shows a purple vertical line on the left side. It adds 2 pixels to the width and I can't adjust it with my monitor. It doesn't come up when I print screen. I tried changing the driver to the binary one (at the top) but that made it not show up at all. What do I do? Are some graphics cards just not compatible?

• Why is ubuntu so sluggish?

  I have noticed the trend that ubuntu is getting increasingly slower with each release. It used to be much faster than windows, but now it is really much slower. I have an Asus G74Sx with an i7 processor, 8Gb of RAM, and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 560M graphics card. I am currently using ubuntu 12.10, but will probably be going back to 12.04. Ubuntu is running as the native operating system. There is really no reason for terminal to take more than 25 seconds to open. I love all of the stuff behind ubuntu, what it stands for and everything, but I need to at least be able to open gedit without waiting 3 minutes for it to open. Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but I would really like to know what is going on and if there is anything I can do to get Ubuntu running at a more appropriate speed.

• Blank screen after installing nvidia restricted driver

  I have a new machine with a MSI N560GTX Ti Twin Frozr II/OC graphic card and MSI PH67A-C43 (B3) main board. If i install the current nvidia restricted driver and reboot the machine on Natty (64-bit), then i only get a black screen after reboot and my system does not respond. I can´t see the login screen. On nvidia web page i saw that the current driver is 270.41.06. Is that driver used as current driver? Btw, i am an ubuntu/linux beginner and therefore not very familiar with ubuntu. What can i do to solve the black screen problem? EDIT: Setting the nomodeset parameter does not solve the problem. After ubuntu start, first i see the ubuntu logo, then strange pixels and at the end the black screen. HELP! EDIT2: Thank you, but setting the "video=vesa:off gfxpayload=text" parameters do no solve the problem too. Same result as in last edit. HELP. I would like to see Unity. • Brightness issues on MSI GT683

  I'm experiencing brightness related issues on my MSI GT683 (Intel Core i5-2410M, nVidia GeForce GTX 560M, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64, nVidia driver version 295.40). To start with, when I open brightness settings, the slider is working incorrectly - screen is the dimmest on about 1/3 of a bar, moving it to the left side increases brightness. Next, while pressing the keyboard buttons (Fn+up, Fn+down), brightness changes incorrectly - sometimes 2 steps up/down, but sometimes it's totally irregular - ex. in order to set the lowest brightness, I have to set the maximum, then hit Fn+down, then Fn+up. (after 2 moves from 8 to 2... What's even more strange, while changing brightness from keyboard on boot and on login screen, it works perfect. Tried adding acpi related switches to GRUB, but the brightness settings wouldn't work at all. Any help appreciated.

  I'm thinking about setting up dual monitors on my desktop PC, running Ubuntu 12.04 with a Nvidia GTX 570. I use the GPU for CUDA programming so it's set up with the CUDA drivers. Is it possible/easy to set up dual monitors with this configuration? The only questions I saw related to this were for GPUs without cuda drivers. If anyone knows how dual monitors work with CUDA drivers, it would be much appreciated. It was enough of a pain getting everything running with the GPU and CUDA in the first place, I'd hate to ruin it all by attempting dual monitors.

• Live CD boot/installation problem, blank screen - 12.04

  I'm trying to install ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64 from my usb stick. When booting from usb I instantly get a blank screen (with a grey box at the left bottom) I checked the live system with my laptop.works well except it also starts of with a black screen and a grey box at the bottom. I figure the Problem is my geforce gtx 570 since older versions of Ubuntu where only able to boot with xforcevesa and nomodeset. Unfortunately I can't change the boot parameters. I tried the alternate version for a text based install, but it has the same problem. If I press Esc in the alternate I get a message box with two buttons but no text. I would be happy for any advice on this matter

  I have seen lots of different posts on this issue, but I cannot figure out what to do. I hope we can collect the available information in one place, so that they can be useful for others. Is it possible to have multiple (3+) monitors running on two different graphics cards? I have 1x nVidia GeForce GTX 550 with 2 DVI ports and 1x Intel integrated graphics, with 2 DVI ports. I understand that they would be running on different instances of X servers. Is that correct? Could someone point me in the right direction to start? On Windows it's so simple, there is no additional thing to do other than going in display preferences and activating all 3+ monitors. They can even be laid out alternating one monitor from one graphics card with another monitor from the other card.

  I've been using Ubuntu since the 10.04 LTS version and i have a sound problem that still remain in my fresh install of the 12.04 LTS AMD64 version. This install has been performed by formatting the / partition and my documents were kept safe in the separated /home partition. The problem : When i listen to a audio or video source while browsing the web with Firefox, I have some sound artifacts when i'm scrolling and stops when i'm not doing it. This happens when i'm doing X11 related actions too, such as switching between virtuals desktops. • Picking up radio station when connecting monitor on latop

• How to convert an XFS file system to HFS+

  I have repeatedly convinced of the reliability of the XFS file system , and I was more than satisfied . I was happy with everything in Ubuntu 14.04 ( great software) , but there is a little "but ! " Basically, I work on OSX-Mavericks 10.9.3, which sees very Windows 8.1 and works wonders with NTFS, but does not see Ubuntu! Briefly describe the equipment: ASRock B75 Pro3-M i5 3330 GeForce GTX 650 Ti SATA 500GB running OS X Mavericks + Clover - a boot disk Toshiba 2TB running Windows 8.1 (x64) and Ubuntu 14.04 (amd64) If you boot from the Toshiba (where there is Ubuntu and boot Windows + GRUB) after restart boot from Clover, it is impossible. Tried a lot of options - as Clover installation and boot priority, and various settings for GRUB, but have not found an acceptable option and have no desire to reinstall again Clover (Mavericks reboots 20 seconds - excellent!) So please help on the file system - how to convert from XFS to HFS+ journaled. Mavericks to saw it all synced on Mac. Thank you for the sensible answer and help! Originally in Russian.

• Mint 13 no longer using NVidia card after restart

  Here's the story; I bought a new graphics card, along with other parts, about a week ago. I put them in, install new drivers everything's working fine. Now after a restart I boot into some lovely 1024x768 resolution with only one screen on. I check in the NVidia X Server settings to see if my screen was changed there, there's nothing there except Application profiles and nvidia-settings. I check hardinfo to see if the card is actually recognised; VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK106 [GeForce GTX 660] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) I don't really know much about the graphics end of things so I'm not sure what I should be doing here to fix this, I don't even know what I should be looking FOR even, so any help is much appreciated! • Switching between Discrete and Integrated GPUs

  Hello everyone, I develop CUDA applications on my Alienware M17x portable back-breaker, which has two discrete GTX 285M GPUs and one integrated GeForce 9400M GPU. I can currently switch between them using NVIDIA's software, but I would like the ability to do so within my applications for purposes of benchmarking and general convenience. Apparently this requires the "NDA version" of NVIDIA's Driver API, which I know not how to obtain. Would using this API be the only way to accomplish what I seek, and if so, how would I obtain it? A solution using Windows APIs would also be acceptable, though less preferable to one which would leverage a cross-platform API.
