  • Algorithms to trim leading zeroes from a SQL field?

    I just came across the interesting problem of trying to trim the leading zeroes from a non-numeric field in SQL. (Since it can contain characters, it can't just be converted to a number and then back.) This is what we ended up using: SELECT REPLACE(LTRIM(REPLACE(fieldWithLeadingZeroes,'0',' ')),' ','0') It replaces the zeroes with spaces, left trims it, and then puts the zeroes back in. I thought this was a very clever and interesting way to do it, although not so readable if you've never come across it before. Are there any clearer ways to do this? Any more efficient ways to do this? Or any other ways to do this period? I was intrigued by this problem and would be interested to see any methods of getting around it.

  • String.split() - matching leading empty String prior to first delimiter?

    I need to be able to split an input String by commas, semi-colons or white-space (or a mix of the three). I would also like to treat multiple consecutive delimiters in the input as a single delimiter. Here's what I have so far: String regex = "[,;\\s]+"; return input.split(regex); This works, except for when the input string starts with one of the delimiter characters, in which case the first element of the result array is an empty String. I do not want my result to have empty Strings, so that something like, ",,,,ZERO; , ;;ONE ,TWO;," returns just a three element array containing the capitalized Strings. Is there a better way to do this than stripping out any leading characters that match my reg-ex prior to invoking String.split? Thanks in advance!

I need to emulate a ternary operator in such a way that the tokens leading up to '?' remain intact. e.g. convert the expression c ? p : q to c something. The simple if(c) p else q fails my criteria, as it requires putting if( before c. My first attempt (still using c/p/q as above) is c match { case(true) = p; case _ = q } another option I found was: class ternary(val g: Boolean = Any) { def |: (b:Boolean) = g(b) } implicit def autoTernary (g: Boolean = Any): ternary = new ternary(g) which allows me to write: c |: { b: Boolean = if(b) p else q } I like the overall look of the second option, but is there a way to make it less verbose? MySubResource is defined as: public abstract class MySubResource { protected abstract Results getResults(); @GET public Results get() { return getResults(); } @GET @Path("xml") public Response getXml() { return Response.ok(getResults(), MediaType.TEXT_XML_TYPE).build(); } @GET @Path("html") public Response getHtml() { return Response.ok(getResults(), MediaType.TEXT_HTML_TYPE).build(); } } Results is processed by corresponding MessageBodyWriters depending on the mimetype of the response. While this works it results in paths like /people/Bob/html or /people/Bob/xml where what I really want is /people/Bob.html or /people/Bob.xml Does anybody know how to accomplish what I want to do?

  • [PHP] MySql Proccesslist filled with "Sleep" Entries leading to "To many Connections" ?

    Hi, i'd like to ask your help on a longstanding issue with php/mysql connections. Every time i execute a "SHOW PROCESSLIST" command it shows me about 400 idle (Status: Sleep) connections to the database Server emerging from our 5 Webservers. That never was much of a problem (and i didn't find a quick solution) until recently traffic numbers increased and since then MySql reports the "to many connections" Problems repeatedly, even so 350+ of those connections are in "sleep" state. Also a server can't get a mysql connection even if there are sleeping connection to that same server. All those connections vanish when a apache server is restated. The PHP Code used to create the Database connections uses the normal "mysql" Module, the "mysqli" Module, PEAR::DB and Zend Framework Db Adapter. (Different projects). NONE of the projects uses persistent connections. Raising the connection-limit is possible but doesn't seem like a good solution since it's 450 now and there are only 20-100 "real" connections at a time anyways. My question: Why are there so many connections in sleep state and how can i prevent that. Thank you for your time, if theres anything unclear or missing please let me know

    While looking over various PHP libraries I've noticed that a lot of people choose to prefix some class methods with a single underscore, such as public function _foo() ...instead of... public function foo() I realize that ultimately this comes down to personal preference, but I was wondering if anyone had some insight into where this habit comes from. My thought is that it's probably being carried over from PHP 4, before class methods could be marked as protected or private, as a way of implying "do not call this method from outside the class". However, it also occurred to me that maybe it originates somewhere (a language) I'm not familiar with or that there may be good reasoning behind it that I would benefit from knowing. Any thoughts, insights and/or opinions would be appreciated.

    Hello, I'm using NSPredicates to fetch entities based on a name attribute. Creating a predicate for names beginning with letters was easy (@"name BEGINSWITH %@", searchLetter), however now I'd like to fetch all entities with a name that begins with a numerical value, or rather a non-alphabetical number. What would be the appropriate predicate expression here? Right now I don't want to get too deep into predicate programming, as this is all I need right now and time flies. So, please, don't point me to the Predicate Programming Guide, I just need that expression.. :) Thanks alot guys!
