  • findViewById returns null in new Intent

    - by drozzy
    I am having a problem where in the started Intent, the findViewById returns null. Is there anything special I should know about starting a new intent? It goes something like this for me: //in the MainList class Intent stuffList = new Intent(this, StuffList.class); then in the new Stuff's constructor: public class StuffList extends ListActivity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); this.setContentView(R.layout.stuff_list); ... this.setListAdapter(new StuffAdapter(this, my_cursor)); and in the StuffAdapter I do my usual view and data retrieval. Note the line where findViewById returns null: class ViewWrapper{ View base; TextView label = null; ViewWrapper(View base){ this.base = base; } TextView getLabel(){ if(label == null){ label = (TextView)base.findViewById(R.id.my_label); // returns NULL } return label;} } class StuffAdapter extends CursorAdapter{ StuffAdapter(Context context, Cursor cursor){ super(context, cursor); } @Override public View newView(Context context, Cursor cursor, ViewGroup parent) { LayoutInflater inflater = getLayoutInflater(); View row = inflater.inflate(R.layout.stuff_list, parent, false); ViewWrapper wrapper = new ViewWrapper(row); row.setTag(wrapper); return(row); } @Override public void bindView(View row, Context context, Cursor cursor) { ViewWrapper wrapper = (ViewWrapper)row.getTag(); TextView label = wrapper.getLabel(); // also NULL //this throws exception of course label.setText(cursor.getString("title")); } } The curious thing is that in the class that calls intent (MainList class), I do Exactly the same thing (i list a bunch of objects), and it Works! however when I try to do it in an Intent - it can't seem to find the view by id.

  • Android, NetworkInfo.getTypeName(), NullpointerException

    - by moppel
    I have an activity which shows some List entries. When I click on a list item my app checks which connection type is available ("WIF" or "MOBILE"), through NetworkInfo.getTypeName(). As soon as I call this method I get a NullpointerException. Why? I tested this on the emulator, cause my phone is currently not available (it's broken...). I assume this is the problem? This is the only explanation that I have, if that's not the case I have no idea why this would be null. Here's some code snippet: public class VideoList extends ListActivity{ ... public void onCreate(Bundle bundle){ final ConnectivityManager cm = (ConnectivityManager) getSystemService(Context.CONNECTIVITY_SERVICE); ... listview.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener(){ public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) { ... NetworkInfo ni = cm.getActiveNetworkInfo(); String connex = ni.getTypeName(); //Nullpointer exception here if(connex.equals("WIFI")doSomething(); } }); } }

  • Popup window size in android

    - by Bostjan
    I'm creating a popup window in a listactivity in the event onListItemClick. LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater) this.getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); View pop = inflater.inflate(R.layout.popupcontact, null, false); ImageView atnot = (ImageView)pop.findViewById(R.id.aNot); height = pop.getMeasuredHeight(); width = pop.getMeasuredWidth(); Log.e("pw","height: "+String.valueOf(height)+", width: "+String.valueOf(width)); atnot.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { pw.dismiss(); } }); pw = new PopupWindow(pop, width, height, true); // The code below assumes that the root container has an id called 'main' //pw.showAtLocation(v, Gravity.CENTER, 0, 0); pw.showAsDropDown(v, 10, 5); Now, the height and width variables were supposed to be height and width of the layout used for the popup window (popupcontact). But they return 0. I guess that is because the layout isn't rendered yet. Does anyone have a clue, how can I control the size of the popup window without needing to use absolute pixel numbers?

  • I can not get the text from a selected item in a listview...pleeeeasss help.

    - by Miguel
    I always get an ClassCastException error... i do not what else to do... - I'm using a data biding concept to populated the listview from a sqlite3 database. - I just want to get the selected item text after a long press click. This is the code of the activity: public class ItemConsultaGastos extends ListActivity { private DataHelper dh ; TextView seleccion; private static String[] FROM = {DataHelper.MES, DataHelper.ANO}; private static int[] TO = {R.id.columnaMes, R.id.columnaAno }; public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.muestrafechas); this.dh = new DataHelper(this); Cursor cursor = dh.selectAllMeses(); startManagingCursor(cursor); this.mostrarFechas(cursor); ListView lv = getListView(); lv.setOnItemLongClickListener(new OnItemLongClickListener(){ @Override public boolean onItemLongClick(AdapterView<?> arg0, View arg1,int row, long arg3) { //here is where i got the classCastException. String[] tmp = (String[]) arg0.getItemAtPosition(row); //tmp[0] ist the Text of the first TextView displayed by the clicked ListItem Log.w("Gastos: ", "El texto: " + tmp[0].toString()); return true; } }); } private void mostrarFechas(Cursor cursor) { SimpleCursorAdapter adapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this,R.layout.muestrafechasitem,cursor, FROM, TO); setListAdapter(adapter); } } ///// This is the xml where a define the rows to show on the listview <TextView android:id="@+id/espacio" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text=" " /> <TextView android:id="@+id/columnaAno" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="20sp" android:layout_toRightOf="@+id/espacio"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/separador1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text=" -- " android:layout_toRightOf="@+id/columnaAno" android:textSize="20sp" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/columnaMes" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_toRightOf="@+id/separador1" android:textSize="20sp"/>

  • How to disable items in a List View???

    - by Techeretic
    I have a list view which is populated via records from the database. Now i have to make some records visible but unavailable for selection, how can i achieve that? here's my code public class SomeClass extends ListActivity { private static List<String> products; private DataHelper dh; public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { dh = new DataHelper(this); products = dh.GetMyProducts(); /* Returns a List<String>*/ super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.myproducts, products)); ListView lv = getListView(); lv.setTextFilterEnabled(true); lv.setOnItemClickListener( new OnItemClickListener() { @Override public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> arg0, View arg1, int arg2, long arg3) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), ((TextView) arg1).getText(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } } ); } } The layout file myproducts.xml is as follows <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:padding="10dp" android:textSize="16sp"> </TextView>

  • Is there a design pattern to cut down on code duplication when subclassing Activities in Android?

    - by Daniel Lew
    I've got a common task that I do with some Activities - downloading data then displaying it. I've got the downloading part down pat; it is, of course, a little tricky due to the possibility of the user changing the orientation or cancelling the Activity before the download is complete, but the code is there. There is enough code handling these cases such that I don't want to have to copy/paste it to each Activity I have, so I thought to create an abstract subclass Activity itself such that it handles a single background download which then launches a method which fills the page with data. This all works. The issue is that, due to single inheritance, I am forced to recreate the exact same class for any other type of Activity - for example, I use Activity, ListActivity and MapActivity. To use the same technique for all three requires three duplicate classes, except each extends a different Activity. Is there a design pattern that can cut down on the code duplication? As it stands, I have saved much duplication already, but it pains me to see the exact same code in three classes just so that they each subclass a different type of Activity.

  • Android: Adding header to dynamic listView

    - by cg5572
    I'm still pretty new to android coding, and trying to figure things out. I'm creating a listview dynamically as shown below (and then disabling items dynamically also) - you'll notice that there's no xml file for the activity itself, just for the listitem. What I'd like to do is add a static header to the page. Could someone explain to me how I can modify the code below to EITHER add this programatically within the java file, before the listView, OR edit the code below so that it targets a listView within an xml file! Help would be much appreciated!!! public class Start extends ListActivity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); DataBaseHelper myDbHelper = new DataBaseHelper(null); myDbHelper = new DataBaseHelper(this); try { myDbHelper.openDataBase(); }catch(SQLException sqle){ throw sqle; } ArrayList<String> categoryList = new ArrayList<String>(); Cursor cur = myDbHelper.getAllCategories(); cur.moveToFirst(); while (cur.isAfterLast() == false) { if (!categoryList.contains(cur.getString(1))) { categoryList.add(cur.getString(1)); } cur.moveToNext(); } cur.close(); Collections.sort(categoryList); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.listitem, categoryList) { @Override public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View view = super.getView(position, convertView, parent); if(Arrays.asList(checkArray3).contains(String.valueOf(position))){ view.setEnabled(false); } else { view.setEnabled(true); } return view; } }); } @Override protected void onListItemClick(ListView l, View v, int position, long id) { if(v.isEnabled()) { String clickedCat = l.getItemAtPosition(position).toString(); Toast.makeText(this, clickedCat, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); finish(); Intent myIntent = new Intent(getApplicationContext(), Questions.class); myIntent.putExtra("passedCategory", clickedCat); myIntent.putExtra("startTrigger", "go"); startActivity(myIntent); } } }

  • ListView exception for Images + Text

    - by drozzy
    I am trying to create a simple Icon+Text ListView but it does not work. I am using 2.1 Android SDK. My main class is very small slightly modified from the tutorial: public class Stuffs extends ListActivity { static final String[] COUNTRIES = new String[] {"A", "B","C"}; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item, R.id.title, COUNTRIES)); } } and my list_item.xml file is this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation = "horizontal"> <ImageView android:id = "@+id/icon" android:src="@drawable/icon" /> <TextView android:id = "@+id/title" android:padding="10dp" android:textSize="16sp" > </TextView> </LinearLayout> I have also created a "drawable" directory in my res directory and copied a "icon.png" into it. But any time I try to run this the application hangs up unexpected in my android emulator. Am I missing something?

  • Android Notepadv1 Tutorial - Persistent mNoteNumber?

    - by Chris L.
    So I did the Notepadv1 tutorial. It worked great. No problems. I would however like some explanation on why the mNoteNumber remembers the last number of the item I created. So the class starts as follows: public class Notepadv1 extends ListActivity { private int mNoteNumber = 1; That's fine, I understand that. The only other time the mNoteNumber variable is used is when you add an item it creates a note with that number and then increments it to the next number as follows: private void createNote() { String noteName = "Note " + mNoteNumber++; Those are the only two references to the variable mNoteNumber. When I press the Home button and then reopen the app, I add a new note but instead of adding a second "Note 1" it remembers that the last note I added as "Note 3" so it makes "Note 4". So I don't get it. Does Java/Android remember the last state of variables? If anyone could give me some explanation that would be great THANKS!

  • ListView getting deleted onbackpress

    - by adohertyd
    I have a listview in my mainactivity that makes a call to a database to populate it. When an item on the listview is clicked it starts a new activity showing the details of the item that was clicked. When the back button is pressed the listview is not displayed again. What could be the problem? This is the entirety of my mainactivity: public class MainActivity extends ListActivity { Button bAddMod; private ModuleDB db; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); db = new ModuleDB(this); db.open(); fillList(); db.close(); bAddMod = (Button) findViewById(R.id.btnAddMod); bAddMod.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { Intent i = new Intent(MainActivity.this, AddModule.class); startActivity(i); } }); } private void fillList() { ListView lv = getListView(); Cursor curs = db.getData(); startManagingCursor(curs); MyCursorAdapter adapter = new MyCursorAdapter(getApplicationContext(), curs); lv.setAdapter(adapter); lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() { public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id){ Intent k = new Intent(MainActivity.this, ModuleDetails.class); k.putExtra("mod_id", id); startActivity(k); } }); } }

I used the Debugger and it does executes these statements, but the dialog doesn't show. }

  • android nested lists

    - by Raogrimm
    i'm new to programming android and i have found some useful things for my app, but i can't seem to find how to make a list filled with an string array display a new list that is going to be populated with a string array. i would like to have the user choose an item from the top_menu list and from there go to the desired area and have that array appear. this is what i have so far: public class HelloListActivity extends ListActivity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); String[] top_menu = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.top_menu); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item, top_menu)); ListView lv = getListView(); lv.setTextFilterEnabled(true); lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() { public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) { ??? } }); } all my arrays are working fine, i just don't know how to repopulate a new list with the other array depending on the choice the user made. any help is greatly appreciated

  • Creating a ListView and setting the background color of a view in each row.

    - by Tarmon
    Hey Everyone, I am trying to implement a ListView that is composed of rows that contain a View on the left followed by a TextView to the right of that. I want to be able to change the background color of the first View based on it's position in the ListView. Below is what I have at this point but it doesn't seem to due anything. public class Routes extends ListActivity { String[] ROUTES; TextView selection; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); ROUTES = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.routes); setContentView(R.layout.routes); setListAdapter(new IconicAdapter()); selection=(TextView)findViewById(R.id.selection); } public void onListItemClick(ListView parent, View v, int position, long id) { selection.setText(ROUTES[position]); } class IconicAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<String> { IconicAdapter() { super(Routes.this, R.layout.row, R.id.label, ROUTES); } } public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { LayoutInflater inflater = getLayoutInflater(); View row = inflater.inflate(R.layout.row, parent, false); TextView label = (TextView) row.findViewById(R.id.label); label.setText(ROUTES[position]); View icon = (View) row.findViewById(R.id.icon); switch(position){ case 0: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Red); break; case 1: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Red); break; case 2: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Green); break; case 3: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Green); break; case 4: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Blue); break; case 5: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Blue); break; } return(row); } } Any input is appreciated and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! • Web image loaded by thread in android

    - by Bostjan
    I have an extended BaseAdapter in a ListActivity: private static class RequestAdapter extends BaseAdapter { and some handlers and runnables defined in it // Need handler for callbacks to the UI thread final Handler mHandler = new Handler(); // Create runnable for posting final Runnable mUpdateResults = new Runnable() { public void run() { loadAvatar(); } }; protected static void loadAvatar() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub //ava.setImageBitmap(getImageBitmap("URL"+pic)); buddyIcon.setImageBitmap(avatar); } In the getView function of the Adapter, I'm getting the view like this: if (convertView == null) { convertView = mInflater.inflate(R.layout.messageitem, null); // Creates a ViewHolder and store references to the two children views // we want to bind data to. holder = new ViewHolder(); holder.username = (TextView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.username); holder.date = (TextView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.dateValue); holder.time = (TextView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.timeValue); holder.notType = (TextView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.notType); holder.newMsg = (ImageView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.newMsg); holder.realUsername = (TextView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.realUsername); holder.replied = (ImageView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.replied); holder.msgID = (TextView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.msgID_fr); holder.avatar = (ImageView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.buddyIcon); holder.msgPreview = (TextView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.msgPreview); convertView.setTag(holder); } else { // Get the ViewHolder back to get fast access to the TextView // and the ImageView. holder = (ViewHolder) convertView.getTag(); } and the image is getting loaded this way: Thread sepThread = new Thread() { public void run() { String ava; ava = request[8].replace(".", "_micro."); Log.e("ava thread",ava+", username: "+request[0]); avatar = getImageBitmap(URL+ava); buddyIcon = holder.avatar; mHandler.post(mUpdateResults); //holder.avatar.setImageBitmap(getImageBitmap(URL+ava)); } }; sepThread.start(); Now, the problem I'm having is that if there are more items that need to display the same picture, not all of those pictures get displayed. When you scroll up and down the list maybe you end up filling all of them. When I tried the commented out line (holder.avatar.setImageBitmap...) the app sometimes force closes with "only the thread that created the view can request...". But only sometimes. Any idea how I can fix this? Either option.

  • Drag N Drop utilizing simple cursor

    - by Cameron
    I'm using CommonsGuy's drag n drop example and I am basically trying to integrate it with the Android notepad example. Drag N Drop Out of the 2 different drag n drop examples i've seen they have all used a static string array where as i'm getting a list from a database and using simple cursor adapter. So my question is how to get the results from simple cursor adapter into a string array, but still have it return the row id when the list item is clicked so I can pass it to the new activity that edits the note. Here is my code: Cursor notesCursor = mDbHelper.fetchAllNotes(); startManagingCursor(notesCursor); // Create an array to specify the fields we want to display in the list (only NAME) String[] from = new String[]{WeightsDatabase.KEY_NAME}; // and an array of the fields we want to bind those fields to (in this case just text1) int[] to = new int[]{R.id.weightrows}; // Now create a simple cursor adapter and set it to display SimpleCursorAdapter notes = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.weights_row, notesCursor, from, to); setListAdapter(notes); And here is the code i'm trying to work that into. public class TouchListViewDemo extends ListActivity { private static String[] items={"lorem", "ipsum", "dolor", "sit", "amet", "consectetuer", "adipiscing", "elit", "morbi", "vel", "ligula", "vitae", "arcu", "aliquet", "mollis", "etiam", "vel", "erat", "placerat", "ante", "porttitor", "sodales", "pellentesque", "augue", "purus"}; private IconicAdapter adapter=null; private ArrayList<String> array=new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList(items)); @Override public void onCreate(Bundle icicle) { super.onCreate(icicle); setContentView(R.layout.main); adapter=new IconicAdapter(); setListAdapter(adapter); TouchListView tlv=(TouchListView)getListView(); tlv.setDropListener(onDrop); tlv.setRemoveListener(onRemove); } private TouchListView.DropListener onDrop=new TouchListView.DropListener() { @Override public void drop(int from, int to) { String item=adapter.getItem(from); adapter.remove(item); adapter.insert(item, to); } }; private TouchListView.RemoveListener onRemove=new TouchListView.RemoveListener() { @Override public void remove(int which) { adapter.remove(adapter.getItem(which)); } }; class IconicAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<String> { IconicAdapter() { super(TouchListViewDemo.this, R.layout.row2, array); } public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View row=convertView; if (row==null) { LayoutInflater inflater=getLayoutInflater(); row=inflater.inflate(R.layout.row2, parent, false); } TextView label=(TextView)row.findViewById(R.id.label); label.setText(array.get(position)); return(row); } } } I know i'm asking for a lot, but a point in the right direction would help quite a bit! Thanks

My first progressbar is hidden but the second one is not displayed. I think I've done somthing wrong using the threads and handlers but I dont' know why. I was first using handler.sendMessage in place of handler.handleMessage but when I had several task in my connectionManager, the progressbar was updated only at the end of all tasks. Thank you in advance for your help

  • Android 1.5 - 2.1 Search Activity affects Parent Lifecycle

    - by pacoder
    Behavior seems consistent in Android 1.5 to 2.1 Short version is this, it appears that when my (android search facility) search activity is fired from the android QSR due to either a suggestion or search, UNLESS my search activity in turn fires off a VISIBLE activity that is not the parent of the search, the search parents life cycle changes. It will NOT fire onDestroy until I launch a visible activity from it. If I do, onDestroy will fire fine. I need a way to get around this behavior... The long version: We have implemented a SearchSuggestion provider and a Search activity in our application. The one thing about it that is very odd is that if the SearchManager passes control to our custom Search activity, AND that activity does not create a visible Activity the Activity which parented the search does not destroy (onDestroy doesn't run) and it will not until we call a visible Activity from the parent activity. As long as our Search Activity fires off another Activity that gets focus the parent activity will fire onDestroy when I back out of it. The trick is that Activity must have a visual component. I tried to fake it out with a 'pass through' Activity so that my Search Activity could fire off another Intent and bail out but that didn't work either. I have tried setting our SearchActivity to launch singleTop and I also tried setting its noHistory attribute to true, tried setResult(RESULT_OK) in SearchACtivity prior to finish, bunch of other things, nothing is working. This is the chunk of code in our Search Activity onCreate. Couple of notes about it: If Intent is Action_Search (user typed in their own search and didn't pick a suggestion), we display a list of results as our Search Activity is a ListActivity. In this case when the item is picked, the Search Activity closes and our parent Activity does fire onDestroy() when we back out. If Intent is Action_View (user picked a suggestion) when type is "action" we fire off an Intent that creates a new visible Activity. In this case same thing, when we leave that new activity and return to the parent activity, the back key does cause the parent activity to fire onDestroy when leaving. If Intent is Action_View (user picked a suggestion) when type is "pitem" is where the problem lies. It works fine (the method call focuses an item on the parent activity), but when the back button is hit on the parent activity onDestroy is NOT called. IF after this executes I pick an option in the parent activity that fires off another activity and return to the parent then back out it will fire onDestroy() in the parent activity. Note that the "action" intent ends up running the exact same method call as "pitem", it just bring up a new visual Activity first. Also I can take out the method call from "pitem" and just finish() and the behavior is the same, the parent activity doesn't fire onDestroy() when backed out of. if (Intent.ACTION_SEARCH.equals(queryAction)) { this.setContentView(_layoutId); String searchKeywords = queryIntent.getStringExtra(SearchManager.QUERY); init(searchKeywords); } else if(Intent.ACTION_VIEW.equals(queryAction)){ Bundle bundle = queryIntent.getExtras(); String key = queryIntent.getDataString(); String userQuery = bundle.getString(SearchManager.USER_QUERY); String[] keyValues = key.split("-"); if(keyValues.length == 2) { String type = keyValues[0]; String value = keyValues[1]; if(type.equals("action")) { Intent intent = new Intent(this, EventInfoActivity.class); Long longKey = Long.parseLong(value); intent.putExtra("vo_id", longKey); startActivity(intent); finish(); } else if(type.equals("pitem")) { Integer id = Integer.parseInt(value); _application._servicesManager._mapHandlerSelector.selectInfoItem(id); finish(); } } } It just seems like something is being held onto and I can't figure out what it is, in all cases the Search Activity fires onDestroy() when finish() is called so it is definitely going away. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be most appreciative. Thanks, Sean Overby

  • ListView items not responding to tap

    - by Justin Williams
    I'm just getting my feet wet with Android and have built a UI that contains a TabHost with three tabs. Each tab is powered by its own Activity. The first Tab contains a listview with a prepopulated set of rows and is built from a custom ArrayAdapter. The problem I'm running into is that none of the ListView rows are tappable. In other words, when I tap on them there is no orange selection. If I use the scroll ball on my Nexus One it will select, but any touch gestures don't seem to be responding. All the UI is being handled using XML files with a main.xml housing the TabHost - LinearLayout - TabWidget/FrameLayout and a nearby_activity.xml file containing my ListView UI <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <TextView android:id="@+id/android:empty" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="@string/nearby_no_events" /> <ListView android:id="@android:id/list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1.0" android:choiceMode="multipleChoice" android:divider="#d9d9d9" android:dividerHeight="1px" android:cacheColorHint="#eee" /> </LinearLayout> And the relevant code from my Activity that is set to show in the selected tab. public class NearbyActivity extends ListActivity { private ArrayList<Event> m_events = null; private EventAdapter m_adapter = null; public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.nearby_activity); getEvents(); this.m_adapter = new EventAdapter(this, R.layout.eventrow, m_events); setListAdapter(this.m_adapter); } private void getEvents() { m_events = new ArrayList<Event>(); for (int i = 0; i < 100 ; i++) { Event e = new Event(); e.setEventName("Event " + i); e.setVenueName("Staples Center"); e.setStartDate(new Date()); m_events.add(e); } } private class EventAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<Event> { private ArrayList<Event> items; public EventAdapter(Context context, int textViewResourceId, ArrayList<Event> items) { super(context, textViewResourceId, items); this.items = items; } @Override public View getView (int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View v = convertView; if (v == null) { LayoutInflater vi = (LayoutInflater)getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); v = vi.inflate(R.layout.eventrow, null); } Event e = items.get(position); if (e != null) { TextView nameText = (TextView)v.findViewById(R.id.eventName); TextView venueNameText = (TextView)v.findViewById(R.id.venueName); if (nameText != null) { nameText.setText(e.getEventName()); } if(venueNameText != null) { venueNameText.setText(e.getVenueName()); } } return v; } } } My listview row's are populated by an XML file as well. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight" android:orientation="vertical" android:padding="4dip"> <TextView android:id="@+id/eventName" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:inputType="text" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="marquee" android:textSize="18sp" android:textColor="#000" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/venueName" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="@id/eventName" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:layout_marginRight="55dip" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="end" android:scrollHorizontally="true" android:textSize="13sp" android:textColor="#313131" android:layout_alignWithParentIfMissing="true" android:gravity="center_vertical" /> </RelativeLayout> Thanks for any help you can offer.

Below is what I have at this point but it doesn't seem to due anything. public class Routes extends ListActivity { String[] ROUTES; TextView selection; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); ROUTES = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.routes); setContentView(R.layout.routes); setListAdapter(new IconicAdapter()); selection=(TextView)findViewById(R.id.selection); } public void onListItemClick(ListView parent, View v, int position, long id) { selection.setText(ROUTES[position]); } class IconicAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<String> { IconicAdapter() { super(Routes.this, R.layout.row, R.id.label, ROUTES); } } public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { LayoutInflater inflater = getLayoutInflater(); View row = inflater.inflate(R.layout.row, parent, false); TextView label = (TextView) row.findViewById(R.id.label); label.setText(ROUTES[position]); View icon = (View) row.findViewById(R.id.icon); switch(position){ case 0: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Red); break; case 1: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Red); break; case 2: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Green); break; case 3: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Green); break; case 4: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Blue); break; case 5: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Blue); break; case 6: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Gray); break; case 7: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Yellow); break; case 8: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Brown); break; case 9: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Brown); break; case 10: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Brown); break; case 11: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Purple); break; case 12: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Red); break; case 13: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Gold); break; case 14: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Orange); break; } return(row); } } Any input is appreciated and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! Thanks, Rob

Here is mycode below; Thanks for any help. I am not good at java please change the code where necessary and I can then refer to it. public class starters extends ListActivity { private static class EfficientAdapter extends BaseAdapter { private LayoutInflater mInflater; private Bitmap mIcon1; private Bitmap mIcon2; private Bitmap mIcon3; private Bitmap mIcon4; private Bitmap mIcon5; private Bitmap mIcon6; private Bitmap mIcon7; private Bitmap mIcon8; private Bitmap mIcon9; private Bitmap mIcon10; public EfficientAdapter(Context context) { // Cache the LayoutInflate to avoid asking for a new one each time. mInflater = LayoutInflater.from(context); // Icons bound to the rows. mIcon1 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters1); mIcon2 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters2); mIcon3 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters3); mIcon4 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters4); mIcon5 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters5); mIcon6 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters6); mIcon7 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters7); mIcon8 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters8); mIcon9 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters9); mIcon10 = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.starters10); } public int getCount() { return DATA.length; } public Object getItem(int position) { return position; } public long getItemId(int position) { return position; } public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { // A ViewHolder keeps references to children views to avoid unneccessary calls // to findViewById() on each row. ViewHolder holder; // When convertView is not null, we can reuse it directly, there is no need // to reinflate it. We only inflate a new View when the convertView supplied // by ListView is null. if (convertView == null) { convertView = mInflater.inflate(R.layout.starters, null); // Creates a ViewHolder and store references to the two children views // we want to bind data to. holder = new ViewHolder(); holder.text = (TextView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.text01); holder.text = (TextView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.secondLine); holder.icon = (ImageView) convertView.findViewById(R.id.icon01); convertView.setTag(holder); } else { // Get the ViewHolder back to get fast access to the TextView // and the ImageView. holder = (ViewHolder) convertView.getTag(); } // Bind the data efficiently with the holder. holder.text.setText(DATA[position]); holder.icon.setImageBitmap((position & 1) ==1 ? mIcon1 : mIcon2); return convertView; } static class ViewHolder { TextView text; ImageView icon; } } @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setListAdapter(new EfficientAdapter(this)); } private static final String[] DATA = { "Original nachos", "Toasted chicken and cheese quesadillas", "Chicken, lime and coriander nachos", "Spicy bean and cheese quesadillas", "Tuna and corn quesadillas", "Cheesy bean and sweetcorn nachos", "Crispy chicken, avocado and lime salad", "Beef and baby corn tostada", "Spicy mexican rice with chicken and prawns", "Chilli potato boats"}; }
