• Loading the preview function of AUCTeX 11.86 on macports Emacs-app 23.2.1 port.

  I've installed Emacs-app 23.2.1 via MacPorts and I'm trying to install AUCTeX 11.86 so that it will work on this installation. I've run the following configure line for AUCTeX and that seems to work. ./configure --with-emacs=/Applications/MacPorts/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs --with-lispdir=/Applications/MacPorts/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/site-lisp/ --with-texmf-dir=/usr/local/texlive/2010basic/texmf-local/ make and make install seem to work, and I've added the following line to my init.el (require 'tex-site) as per the installation instructions. However, when I open a TeX file, the Preview menu does not show up (although the LaTeX menu does.) The following are some of my tests: M-x load-library RET preview-latex RET doesn't seem to do anything. M-x load-library RET preview RET brings up the Preview menu. Is it safe to somehow add the load-library preview to my init.el? Or do I risk mucking up something? I'm new to Emacs and primarily trying to learn it because of the AUCTeX preview features, but I don't feel very safe in this environment yet.

• manage.py runserver throws an ImportError with my appname, MacPorts issue on OSX?

  I've been developing a Django app for weeks locally on OSX 10.6.3. Recently, I rebooted my machine and went to start my development environment up. Digging around, it's possible that this might be due to MacPorts. Initially, I had a rough time getting Django up and running and I no longer remember if I'm using the Django from a MacPorts install or from easy_install. How do I tell? (I'd prefer not to reinstall everything). Also, why is the camel casing in my app name gone in the ImportError message? When I search for "myapp" in my django project, I don't find it without camelcase anywhere. And what causes MacPorts to work for a while but then break? • Installing PHP-GTK with PHP 5.3 on OS X

  I'm having trouble getting php-gtk installed with php 5.3 on os x. I tried with different machine but I obtained every time time the same error: svn: OPTIONS of 'http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/trunk': could not connect to server (http://svn.macports.org) I can't understand the problem, the address is http so I think that is a problem of subversion with http address (the repository is the one for Macport for MAC OS but I think that the problem is not about the repository but is a subversion problem)

• Where is OS X's $PATH set?

  I have a little $PATH problem: I just reinstalled MacPorts, and my path contains the MacPorts directories as it should at the beginning of $PATH. However, despite me having no such setting in my ~/.bashrc, ~/.bash_profile or ~/.profile, /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin is somehow getting appended to the beginning of my $PATH: 0 07:15:11pm ~ $ echo $PATH /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin I'd like to remove it as the MacPorts version of Python is newer. This must be appended after all the above-listed files are read, but I can't think of where. There is no mention of this in /etc/profile, /etc/bashrc or /etc/paths. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Installing mysql on leopard: "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket"

  I migrated to a new machine and used migration assistant to copy across my files (which seemed to copy across the DBs) but I had to use macports to install Mysql (whereas last time I compiled from source via Dan Benjamin's guide). For some reason, mysql is intermittently throwing the following error; Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock' (2) It does this no matter what I try, which has included setting the socket in /opt/local/etc/mysql5/my.cnf. • Python on Mac: Fink? MacPorts? Builtin? Homebrew? Binary installer?

  For the last few days, I have been trying to use Python for some audio development. The thing is, Mac OSX does not handle uninstalling stuff well. Actually, there is no way to uninstall anything. Once it is on your system, you better pray that it didn't do any funny stuff. Hence, I don't really want to rely on installer packages for Python. So I turn to Homebrew and install Python using Homebrew. Works fabulously. Using pip, Numpy, SciPy, Matplotlib were no (big) problem, either. Now I want to play audio. There is a host of different packages out there, but pip does not seem willing to install any. But, there is a binary distribution for PyGame, which I guess should work with the built-in Python. Hence my question: What would you do? Would you just install the binary distributions and hope that they interoperate well and never need uninstalling? Would you hack your way through whichever package control management system you prefer and deal with its problems? Something else?

  I am following This Tutorial on installing MGTwitterEngine on my MAC osx 10.6.2. I am stuck on this step: sudo port install cmake it gives me the following error: dlopen(/opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/pextlib1.0/Pextlib.dylib, 10): no suitable image found. Help needed. P.S. In terminal preferences, Shells Open With is either /usr/bin/login or /bin/bash YAJL is supposedly installed at /Users/Rex I am using OSX 10.6.2

• Curious about python installation paths, especially on OSX.

  First: I'm running Macports. No problems with that, except: /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin which is the value of sys.exec_prefix, for my macports python even though: /opt/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/ seems to be quite a logical place to put things, /opt/local being the macports --prefix, as it were. Why does easy_install put things in this odd Frameworks/Python.framework thing? More importantly, can i use the methods here, to ensure that all my systemwide python, particularly the scripts which I really want in /opt/local/bin, things I use all over the place like (i|b)python for example are accessible?

• QT Creator 64-bit Snow Leopard

  I have a bunch of libraries that I need to link against that I installed via macports. They are 64-bit libraries. I'm working on an application written with QT Creator and the .pro is set up. I downloaded the QT SDK for Mac OS X, but it is 32-bit and so the compiled code won't link against the 64-bit binaries that I got from macports. Ok. So I downloaded the QT SDK source and built from source using -arch x86_64. Now I have a 64-bit version of the SDK (I think) but it didn't build a QT Creator app. So. I need to know one of 4 things: Either, 1.) I'm guessing that a simple make command will convince the QT SDK to build the creator for me. If this is true, then what is the command (make creator?). barring that, I need to know 2.) The easiest way to get MacPorts to redownload the libraries that I installed with a 32-bit version (I keep seeing a "+universal" mentioned, but I haven't seen it on a line, and simply calling ports +universal install XYZ doesn't seem to work--perhaps I need to uninstall and reinstall the package?). Also, is this a stupid idea? or 3.) Someone who actually has a prebuilt 64-bit QT SDK installer so I don't have to mess with this. It is ridiculous that QT doesn't already have this available, in my opinion--SL has been out since, what, last August? 4--and this would take the cake.) I don't understand why I can't simply put a "compile-for-64-bit stupid" command directly into the QT pro file and have it build. There isn't really a reason why a compiler compiled in 32-bits couldn't compile to 64-bits is there? Thanks.

• How to get httrack to work with SSL on mac os x? (libssl.so not found)

  I'm trying to use httrack website copier but the program is running and reporting "no-ssl" (ie: it does not have the capability to copy secure sites). From looking over this thread, it seems that the problem is either when I make & configure the program, or when I run the program, it is not finding the lib-ssl / open-ssl that I have installed. I think it is looking for /var/root/lib/libssl.so.1.0 The user on that forum states that he created a symlink which allowed httrack to find the ssl library in the non-default location. Perhaps that's what I need to do - but where do I create the link from and to? I'm not seeing that I have any libssl.so files installed on my system. Do I need the development package? If so, how do I install that? I used macports to install the current version of openssl that I have. I'm running OS X 10.6. • Purge complete Python installation on OS X

  I’m working on a recently-upgraded OS X Snow Leopard and MacPorts and I’m running into problems at every corner. The first problem is the sheer number of installed Python versions: altogether, there are four: 2.5, 2.6 and 3.0 in /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework 2.6 in /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/ (MacPorts installation) So there are at least two useless/redundant versions: 2.5 and the redundant 2.6. Additionally, the pre-installed Python is giving me severe problems because some of the pre-installed libraries (in particular, scipy, numpy and matplotlib) don’t work properly. I am sorely tempted to purge the complete /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework path, as well as the MacPorts Python installation. After that, I’ll start from a clean slate by installing a properly configured Python, e.g. that from Enthought. Am I running headlong into trouble? Or is this a sane undertaking? (In particular, I need a working Python in the next few days and if I end up with a non-working Python this would be a catastrophe of medium proportions. On the other hand, some features I need from matplotlib aren’t working now.)

But I'm failing miserably: py26-wxpython from macports won't install, stock python has wxwidgets included but also has some conflict between 32 bits and 64 bits, and it doesn't have numpy... what a mess !   I have my mac setup to use php / mysql / apache via macports. Recently it has gone a bit pear shaped: it seems that the local mac versions of apache and mysql are running blocking the macports services: (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:443 Web sharing in System preferences is off - How can I properly disable it? I tried turning it on an off again in System Preferences but it would not changed from off to on. Also if I kill the process it starts running again.

  I've been wanting to try out Nginx with PHP-FPM. I installed Nginx via Macports. I read that PHP 5.3.3 includes PHP-FPM, however, the PHP 5.3.3 configuration on Macports does not enable it. Can anyone explain or refer me to a tutorial on how to install PHP 5.3.3 with PHP-FPM for Nginx on OS X? I'd want to place it in /opt where Nginx is to keep it away from the PHP I'm using with Apache in /usr/local. I'm new to command-line stuff. Pardon my ignorance.

• how can I get back /usr/local/bin/mysql on Snow Leopard?

  From terminal and trying to uninstall macports, I ran a command, rm -rf / macports...., that erased bunch of stuff. I feel ashamed about this, not realizing the space after /. Since then, mysql is running but I cannot execute any of the mysql commands because it is not under /usr/local/bin/ I went ahead an reinstall mysql but without luck. What steps do you recommend on doing in order to be able to run mysql, mysqlduml, mysqladmin, from terminal? I can access databases from phpmyadmin, so mysql is running, don't ask me how.

• Mac OS X 10.6 executable not found without full path

  I just installed Apache via MacPorts. It seems that my Mac was absolutely confused about which version of the Apache executables to run. After moving the Apache executables that ship with the Mac to a directory that is not listed in the PATH variable, trying to run the httpd built by MacPorts fails even though the correct directory (/opt/local/apache2/bin) is listed in the PATH variable. If I navigate to the directory /opt/local/apache2/bin and type the command httpd I still get the error message -bash: httpd: command not found If I type the command with the full path /opt/local/apache2/bin/httpd it works fine. I've run the command alias to see if something was clashing but the only thing listed is: alias wget='curl -O' How do I find what is intercepting the command and preventing the executable being found in the directory, even when I'm inside the same directory? • How to make python_select work for '$>python' command?

  I installed a couple of pythons in different versions with macports, and the apple python 2.6 is also working. Now I need to run a program which requires MySQLdb package support in python, and this package was installed to the python I installed by macports. The program tells me that there is no MySQLdb installed, so I guess it is the apple python working for that program. I searched for some help and found python_select for switching between pythons. However after the command $>sudo python_select python25 told me that it selected the version "python25" for python, when I type $>python it is still apple python 2.6 that launches. The question is that how can I make python25(the one with MySQLdb) work for the program rather than apple python? Another important thing, the program is NOT a .py file and needs to be compiled before running. So do I need to re-install this program? My Mac OS version is Snow Leopard 10.6. Any answer is appreciated.
