  • C++: Platform indepentend game lib?

    - by Martijn Courteaux
Hi, I want to write a serious 2D game, and it would be nice if I have a version for Linux and one for Windows (and eventually OSX). Java is fantastic because of its platform independent. But Java is to slow to write a serious game. So, I thought to write it in C++. But C++ isn't very cross-platform friendly. I can find game libraries for Windows and libraries for Linux, but I'm searching one that I can use for both, by recompiling the source on a Windows platform and on a Linux platform. Are there engines for this or is this idea irrelevant? Isn't it that easy (recompiling)? Any advice and information about C++ libraries would be very very very appreciated!

  • Java JRE vs GCJ

    - by Martijn Courteaux
    Hi, I have this results from a speed test I wrote in Java: Java real 0m20.626s user 0m20.257s sys 0m0.244s GCJ real 3m10.567s user 3m5.168s sys 0m0.676s So, what is the but of GCJ then? With this results I'm sure I'm not going to compile it with GCJ! I tested this on Linux, are the results in Windows maybe better than that? This was the code from the application: public static void main(String[] args) { String str = ""; System.out.println("Start!!!"); for (long i = 0; i < 5000000L; i++) { Math.sqrt((double) i); Math.pow((double) i, 2.56); long j = i * 745L; String string = new String(String.valueOf(i)); string = string.concat(" kaka pipi"); // "Kaka pipi" is a kind of childly call in Dutch. string = new String(string.toUpperCase()); if (i % 300 == 0) { str = ""; } else { str += Long.toHexString(i); } } System.out.println("Stop!!!"); }

  • C# Why is a treeview node clicked when canceled is set to true?

    - by Martijn
In my winform application I have a treeview. To give the idea that a node is disabled I set the node's forecolor and I when the BeforeSelect fires I set e.cancel to true. However when a node's tag meets some criteria a node may be selected. So that's why I have a NodeMouseClick. But when a node may not be clicked I set the e.cancel to true in the BeforeSelect event. The problem now is, the NodeMousClick event is always fired and all the code is ececuted, even when I set e.cancel to true in the BeforeSelect event. Why is that?

  • C++: Question about freeing memory

    - by Martijn Courteaux
On Learn C++, they wrote this to free memory: int *pnValue = new int; // dynamically allocate an integer *pnValue = 7; // assign 7 to this integer delete pnValue; pnValue = 0; My question is: "Is the last statement needed to free the memory correctly, completly?" I thought that the pointer *pnValue was still on the stack and new doesn't make any sense to the pointer. And if it is on the stack it will be cleaned up when the application leaves the scope (where the pointer is declared in), isn't it?

  • C++: Where can I define the body for a private function?

    - by Martijn Courteaux
Hi, I have a header like this (header guards not shown): class GameSystem { public: GameSystem(Game *pcGame); virtual ~GameSystem(); void Setup(); private: void InitGame(); void RunGame(); void ExitGame(); Game *m_pcGame; /* Properties */ int m_nWidth; int m_nHeight; int m_nFps; bool m_bFullscreen; }; Where can I define the body for InitGame(), RunGame() and ExitGame()? Can I define it in my .cpp file? If so, how? Or am I obliged to make their body in my .h file? I'm using Eclipse and I began typing: void GameSystem:: and then he doesn't suggest the private functions.

  • C# What is the best way to determine the type of an inherited interface class?

    - by Martijn
In my application I work with criterias. I have one base Criteria interface and and other interfaces who inherits from this base interface: ICriteria | | ---------------------- | | ITextCriteria IChoices What I'd like to know is, what is the best way to know what Type the class is? In my code I have a dropdown box and based on that I have to determine the type: // Get selected criteria var selectedCriteria = cmbType.SelectedItem as ICriteria; if (selectedCriteria is IChoices) { //selectedCriteria = cmbType.SelectedItem as IChoices; Doesn't work IChoices criteria = selectedCriteria as IChoices;//cmbType.SelectedItem as IChoices; SaveMultipleChoiceValues(criteria); //_category.AddCriteria(criteria); } else { //ICriteria criteria = selectedCriteria; //cmbType.SelectedItem as ICriteria; if (selectedCriteria.GetCriteriaType() == CriteriaTypes.None) { return; } //_category.AddCriteria(criteria); } _category.AddCriteria(selectedCriteria); selectedCriteria.LabelText = txtLabeltext.Text; this.Close(); My question is, is this the best way? Or is there a better way to achieve this? The chance is big that there are coming more interfaces based on ICriteria.

  • ASP C# How to handle large files from database?

    - by Martijn
In my web application I am working with files. Some files are very large. I use Response.Write() to write the file to the browser. This goes well for the smaller files, but for large files this can take a while and the bandfwith is fully used. My question is, is it possible to split large documents and send it piece by piece to the browser? I hold the document as a property of an object.

  • Jquery How to use history plugin?

    - by Martijn
In my web application I am using ajax and now I'd like the back and forward browser buttons to work. So I went looking for a jquery history plugin and found this one: http://stilbuero.de/jquery/history In my code I use a function to load a page: function loadDocument(id, doc) { $("#DocumentContent").show(); // Clear dynamic menu items $("#DynamicMenuContent").html(""); $("#PageContent").html(""); // Load document in frame $("#iframeDocument").attr("src", 'ViewDoc.aspx?id=' + id + '&doc=' + doc + ''); // Load menu items $("#DynamicMenuContent").load("ShowButtons.aspx"); } As you can see I want my pages to load within an Iframe. Can someone tell me how I can use a history plugin so that the brwoser buttons will work? I don't really care which plugin it is, as long as the browser buttons work. I prefer an easy to use plugin.

  • Java Authenticator on a per connection basis?

    - by Martijn Laarman
I'm building an Eclipse plugin that talks to a REST interface which uses Basic Authentication. When the authentication fails I would like to popup my plugin's settings dialog and retry. Normally I could use the static Authenticator.setDefault() to setup an authenticator for all HttpURLConnection's for this, but since I am writing a plugin I don't want to overwrite Eclipse's default Authenticator (org.eclipse.ui.internal.net.auth); I thought of setting my custom Authenticator before loading and putting Eclipse's default back afterwards, but I imagine this will cause all sorts of race issues with multithreading so I quickly lost that notion. Google searches yield all sorts of results basically telling me it's not possible: The Java URLConnection API should have a setAuthenticator(Authenticator) method for making it easier to use this class in multi-threaded context where authentication is required. Source If applications contains few third party plugins and each plugin use its own Authenticator what we should do? Each invocation of "Authenticator.setDefault()" method rewrite previously defined Authenticator... Source Are there any different approaches that might help me overcome this issue?

  • C++: Print only one char

Hi, When I read one char* from std::cin and I want to write it to std::cout, it prints until it finds a \0 in memory. So what did was: char c; cin >> c; char* pChar = &c; pChar++; *pChar = '\0'; println(&c); // My own method: void println(char * str) { cout << str << endl; } But I don't think this is a safe action. Is there a safer way to do this?

  • I need to get form data from multiple forms on one page using $_POST

    - by CDeanMartin
    My project is a menu that displays daily specials at a cafe. The Pointy Haired Boss(PHB) needs to add/remove items from the menu on a daily basis, so I stored all dishes with MySQL, and created a page which will load all menu items as buttons. When clicked, the button will UPDATE the item, turning it on or off. I need form data to detect which button was pressed, so my query knows which $menuItem to UPDATE. That is the purpose of the hidden fields. <html><head></head> <body> <html><head></head> <body> <?php include("getElement.php"); $keys = array_keys($_POST); echo $keys[0]; echo $keys[1]; //if(isset($_POST["menuItem"])){ //toggleItem($_POST["menuItem"]); //echo print_r(array_keys($_POST));} ?> <form name="b" action="scratchpad.php" method="post" > <input type="hidden" name="b" value="Cajun Gumbo"/> <input type="submit" style="color:blue" value="Cajun Gumbo" /> </form> <form name="a" action="scratchpad.php" method="post" > <input type="hidden" name="a" value="Guacomole Burger"/> <input type="submit" style="color:blue" value="Guacomole Burger" /> </form> </body> </html> Can I get $_POST to identify which button was pressed?

  • How to teach computer science ?

    - by proferikson
I am just starting to teach computer science. It's just the basic level. I'm finding that I sometimes don't know how to approach topics in a way that lets students easily understand. I've found that the best thing is to use analogies. A terrible one, that worked well, was presenting recursion by using the process of eating a burger. (You eat one bite, then you eat the rest). Interesting real world examples do wonders here. I'd like to know the techniques you have used for teaching, or teachers you've had have used that proved particularly effective. I'd also like to know your best analogies and examples for topics in CS101, especially for those harder to grasp topics. I'm teaching the class in Java (as required).
