• Windows XP: GNU find.exe moved my files and now they're lost

  I used a series of GNU find.exe commands to move media files to the current folder. Explorer show that the folders and files still exist in their original location but properties show zero size and files. I performed a chkdisk and that didnt help. Any ideas how to recover these files? • DTS to AC3 conversion for LG TV using mediatomb DLNA server

  I want to convert a MKV video file containing DTS audio to a stream with AC3 audio. I want to pass this resulting stream to mediatomb's transcoding feature. Mediatomb will transfer the stream via DLNA to a LG TV, which does not support DTS audio. I have tried the VLC command below but the TV does not recognize the stream, and playing the destination stream on PC does not produce sound. vlc -vvv -I dummy INPUT.file --sout \ '#transcode{acodec=ac3,ab=256k,channels=2,threads=4} \ :std{mux=ts,access=file,dst=DEST.file}' The following ffmpeg command give a stream that plays on the TV with sound, but the ffmpeg process gets killed (with signal 15) within 10-15 seconds, and then the TV restarts the playback from the beginning. This goes on in loops. ffmpeg -i INPUT.file -acodec ac3 -ab 384k -vcodec copy \ -vbsf h264_mp4toannexb -f mpegts -y DEST.file I want to have a working DLNA server which transcodes DTS to AC3, any help is appreciated.

  Fullscreen video on my new 1080p monitor is choppy when it comes from my laptop. The same video plays when not full screen. This goes for all video(Flash/MKV, etc), regardless of video resolution. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series card in my Thinkpad Edge, Turion X2 2GHz. The computer plays 1080p fine. Things I've tried: Updating Drivers Switching cables Turning Hardware Acceleration Changing video players process priority Rebooting Turning of laptop screen Turning off unused processes Nothing Works. What is the likelyhood that my laptop cannot power a 1920x1280 display?

• How to fix choppy video with VLC player?

  When playing most movies in VLC player, the video feed is choppy. Furthermore, the sound is near perfect. Another catch is, this video issue wasn't always an issue. I use to play movies with no problem with video or sound. I can not pin point what has changed between the it use to work fine and the time it started being choppy though. I have an ASUS G73JW-A1. This system should be more than enough to handle the demand of playing HD videos. Movies that are normally effected are HD videos. These video range from 4 to 9 gigs. In addition, the videos are in MKV, MP4 (or M4V), and AVCHD (or M2TS) formats. I get the same results when playing move directly off my hard drive or off an external. Finally, all the drivers have been recently checked and updated if needed.

  I regularly use Windows Explorer to browse my drives and data, and I notice little freezes and hiccups at times. It's especially noticable when browsing local or network folders with lots of video files (AVI, MKV, MPG, etc). I almost always browse in Details view, and the "Do not cache thumbnails" option is turned on. Even though I'm in "Details" mode, I'm convinced the sluggishness is due to Windows trying to generate thumbnails for the video files, so I want to disable thumbnail generation for these files. I occasionally use Thumbnails view for browsing image files, so I don't want to disable all thumbnails. But for future reference, this might be good to know. So I have three questions about disabling Windows thumbnail generation: How do I disable thumbnail generation for all non-image files? How do I disable thumbnail generation for all files? How do I disable thumbnail generation for one specific filetype? And finally, how do I undo (re-enable thumbnails) once I've performed one of the above?

  I have a bunch of Xvid files that each have an audio stream that I do not want. How can I strip the audio track I don't want using the Linux command line? I don't need the whole script (loop), just what command I would use to process each avi file individually (unless the cmd itself has batch modification built into it). I don't believe the file is in an mkv container, as mkvinfo doesn't find anything. • Full HD video playback acceleration with mplayer on Ubuntu Lucid

  I know that for an NVidia card I can sudo apt-get install nvidia-current mplayer, reboot, and then use mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffmpeg12vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,ffvc1vdpau,ffh264vdpau FILE.mkv to get accelerated video playback of H.264 and other codecs, so even full HD videos can be played back with only little CPU. (And there are many other options, e.g. XBMC also supports VDPAU.) But how do I get accelerated video playback if I have a recent ATI or Intel video card on Ubuntu Lucid? How do I figure out if my video card has acceleration built in? The solution has to work with mplayer or mplayer2. It's OK for me to recompile mplayer(2), but I'd prefer installing both the kernel and the X.org X server from a binary package repository.

  I'm a newbie in video encoding so I'm looking for some expert advice. I'm looking to transcode media files with ffmpeg or mencoder (or something other) on Ubuntu for my Nokia N900 running Maemo. I'd prefer mencoder, because of ffmpeg's crazy dependencies. Video output should be AVC/H.264 (probably hardware accelerated on device). Audio output in AAC (should have preferred Vorbis but not supported natively and requires .mkv which is also not completely supported). Output video should retain the original aspect ratio. Resolution of screen is 800x480 (16:10). (Explanation of why-this-value-is-chosen would be really appreciated). Thanks.

  Description I have a big (7.4G) .mkv file (1080p) which I want to convert to H.264 (using x264) Problem MediaCoder and GSpot are unable to detect the codec. They don't display anything. Just that the file is a matroska Container Video with a MIMEtype of video/x-matroska. No bitrate, profile etc. But the source tells me that is VC-1 encoded. Question So how do I encode this file. as in, using what encoding software, since MediaCoder has failed.

• Read ahead buffering while playing video file from optical disc

  I was wondering if there is a program for Windows 7 (64-bit), that reads ahead the file to be played back (usually MKV files in my case) to the RAM, so the disc that the video file resides in, won't spin for the entire duration of the playback, but only every time the cache is almost empty (with big enough cache so it won't need the drive for long periods). A program that I've used in the past (called DVDIdle), was doing that universally for every video player I wanted, but they've stopped updating it 6 years ago and now it doesn't seem to work with Windows 7 (tried using compatibility mode too). The method I am using now, is to either have the drive wearing down and buzzing all the time or manually copy the entire file to HDD, SSD or RamDisk and play it from there. The closest thing I've found, is a software that slows down the drive's spin speed, but I was looking for something more convenient, automated, without waiting for an entire file to be copied before starting playback or needing any HDD space, like I've used to in the past. • Frame rate upsampling codec/player/software?

  Hello, I recently noticed that when I play both HD and SD videos on my HDMI TV at 1080p 60Hz from my computer, the motion is not fluid as I would expect. As far as I know, it could be because the 24fps video needs to be upsampled by the codec to match the 60Hz output of the monitor. But, as far as I know, the upsampling is done by simply repeating each photogram for a certain amount of frames. I usually play MKV videos with VLC. Do you know if there is a player or codec that performs the upsampling by interpolation like some 100Hz TVs do? I recently saw an LG led TV play a 24fps 720p video at 100Hz with an incredible motion fluidity, and I simply wonder why can't my computer do! I have an NVidia card. Does PureVideo help? I'm a noob with these things. Thank you.

• Lots of artifacts while streaming HD content with VLC 0.9.9 on CentOS

  I'm trying to stream (multicast) a x264 encoded file using VLC. This in itself succeeds, but the stream has a huge lot of artifacts. This seems to suggest that the data cannot be transported fast enough. If I check network usage, though, it's only using about 15 mbit. I have a similar SD stream which functions perfectly. I think I could improve stream performance by not streaming the raw data, but I cannot seem to get this working. It seems that on keyframes all artifacts are removed for a short while (less than a second). This is the command I use: vlc -vv hdtest.mkv --sout '#duplicate{dst=rtp{dst=ff02::1%eth1,mux=ts,port=5678,sap,group="Testgroup",name="TeststreamHD"}}' --loop Which is all one long line.

  I am looking for application that will help me organize movies, clips and other videos I have. I tell it a folder to watch, and then I can mark every video there as watched/unwatched, set rating, add description, tag it. And possibility to open with preferred video player (for me — VLC). Option to get all info from imdb or other source will be very good. yFlicks would be a good one, but it uses quicktime, so it doesn't like any non standard codec and container (for example mkv), it doesn't work well on Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?

• How can I reorder parts of a video file

  I have download a mkv movie file which gave me 3 files suffixed .001, .002, and .003. When i join them together with different tools like winrar, 7zip, hjsplit, concatenated file shows only last 40 min/1.22 hrs of the total length of the movie. If I play all the (.001, .002, .003) parts with vlc player, I can see that .003 is the first part of the video and .001 is the last part. Can anyone tell me how can join this parts of movie with correct position or how I can convert .003 file into .001 file.

• Access to certain files but not others

  Hoping someone can help me as I have, thus far, been unable to solve the issue. I am running a media center utilizing Ubuntu 12.04. I was initially successful accessing media files from the desktop running Ubuntu via my Windows 7 laptop and Roku device. I started backing up a new batch of DVD's I had (into MKV files, like everything else in my media folders) and noticed I cannot access the new files from either the Roku or the laptop. I have not changed any settings in the media folder and verified the shared permissions. The parent folder (Media) is shared (with permission flow-down) while the subfolders (Movies, TV Shows, Music) are not. I have changed the permissions on this to include shared when the access problem arose but with no success. I can only access the original files uploaded an not new files added. Any suggestions???   So, Im trying to make a program to rename some files. For the most part, I want them to look like this, [Testing]StupidName - 2[720p].mkv But, I would like to be able to change the format, if so desired. If I use MatchEvaluators, you would have to recompile every time. Thats why I don't want to use the MatchEvaluator. The problem I have is that I don't know how, or if its possible, to tell Replace that if a group was found, include this string. The only syntax for this I have ever seen was something like (?<group>:data), but I can't get this to work. Well if anyone has an idea, im all for it.

  Hi, I am developing a program for converting videos for mobiles for eg converting mkv,avi,flv,ogg file to mp4 files.I have to display a preview window which should have the mobile specific dimension for eg. Sony Ericsson has 176 pixels x 220 pixels. My screen resolution is 1600x900 and when I change to some other resolution say 1024x768 for testing the preview window size changes. Can anyone suggest me how can I fix this. SUMMARY:When screen resolution is changed my preview window size should remain same(like if I measure using a scale along the screen). thanks.
