• Is it possible to install Ubuntu 10.10 and/or Ubuntu 11.04 on a late 2009 iMac?

  I would like to install Ubuntu on my iMac 10,1 (21.5 inch display). I would prefer to instal Natty Narwhal, but would surely settle for Maverick Meerkat (which I have a install dvd of). I have an install of OS X Snow Leopard AND a Bootcamp Partition of Windows 7. I would like to keep all these partitions and setup a triple boot system. If it can work, I'm also wondering if it'd be safe to install all updates from the update manager once it's installed. Thank you in advance. :)

• Java - Using Linear Coordinates to Check Against AI [closed]

  I'm working on some artificial intelligence, and I want my AI not to run into given coordinates as these are references of a wall/boundary. To begin with, every time my AI hits a wall, it makes a reference to that position (x,y). When it hits the same wall three times, it uses linear check points to 'imagine' there is a wall going through these coordinates. I want to now prevent my AI from going into that wall again. To detect if my coordinates make a straight line, i use: private boolean collinear(double x1, double y1, double x2, double y2, double x3, double y3) { return (y1 - y2) * (x1 - x3) == (y1 - y3) * (x1 - x2); } This returns true is the given points are linear to one another. So my problems are: How do I determine whether my robot is approaching the wall from its current trajectory? Instead of Java 'imagining' theres a line from 1, to 3. But to 'imagine' a line all the way through these linear coordinantes, until infinity (or close). I have a feeling this is going to require some confusing trigonometry?   What's better in terms of user experience? Provide the user an email account where he can report bugs, or a link to the projects github issues page (which requires a github account but may be easier to submit bugs to)? EDIT The application is a Bash script hosted on github. The GNU Coding Standards suggests using an email address, which may or may not an appropriate solution. Target audience is the CLI power user.

• Will setInterval give me Delay?

  I am setting up a JavaScript Server for my Game. Am I understanding this correctly: If I use setInterval to call a function every second, and takes 2 seconds to process. Then I am going to "stack up" requests indefinetly the Client will become more and more out of sync? If I use setTimeout, and specify 1 second. Then the function will run (again, lets say 2 seconds) and then start the timeout. And not stack up requests.

• Announcement: How-To Series Explaining Customizations Step By Step

  Yesterday we officially launched our new YouTube channel.  Today we are announcing another initiative that we have been working on for a while: to help you learn common customization tasks, we are going to publish a series of detailed How-To documents with lots of screenshots.  Many of these will also be the script for a YouTube video, giving you the choice to see it in action or go through the steps yourself guided by a PDF document. The focus of the initial set of How-Tos will be JDeveloper/ADF customizations, but over time we will expand into other areas.  Today's first document is meant to get everyone up to the point where a JDeveloper environment is up and running: a white paper that shows you how to set up JDeveloper, configure the integrated WLS domain, and make a very, very simple customization work. • HDA NVidia (GT520) - Sound Issue

  I have an GT520 graphics card and I am trying to get the sound working with my XBMC setup and I'm having trouble. Things I have completed: aplay -l List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 then lspci 01:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation HDMI Audio stub (rev a1) and alsamixer which is set to unmuted Everything looks well, so ran: aplay -D hw:0,3 /home/ollie/Music/alex.mp3 Playing raw data '/home/ollie/Music/alex.mp3' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono aplay: set_params:1059: Sample format non available Available formats: - S16_LE - S32_LE with no luck.. then speaker-test Playback device is default Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels Using 16 octaves of pink noise Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory also tried running through ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/gpu-hdmi-audio-document/gpu-hdmi-audio.html#upgrading_alsa_driver and http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW-TO:Setup_audio_over_HDMI_on_nVidia_GeForce/nForce_controller plus 20 other websites with selective "fixes" etc.. but no luck _< I am a complete beginner with Ubuntu so this is a really steep learning curve for me, not sure I'm learning much though as its all just headaches atm!   In recent months our blog has covered many aspects of the overall Oracle Cloud platform, whether it's PaaS (Java Cloud Service, Database Cloud Service) or SaaS (Sales Cloud Application Composer). Teams within Oracle have been busy building demos and proof-of-concept applications using the same technologies, and we have now started posting some of these as code samples on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN).  The zip files include both the source code and helpful information to get you started using the code.  Everything is covered under a BSD license.  In future blog posts we will dive deeper into some of these applications. • attempted WUBI install corrupted Vista

  Tried to install WUBI through Google Chrome on my Vista machine. Got through the usual warning about running new software, selected "continue" and waited for a prompt about where to install WUBI. Never got one...waited about 30 minutes (computer still running fine)...decided to reboot and try again. OOOOOPS. Was not able to reboot Vista. Ouch. When I run a Vista recovery CD it tells me there is an "X:" drive on what used to be my C: drive and it cannot find a Vista install to recover. Anyone seen this ? It is making me very happy... THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

• Web service request ignores basic WSDL XML element restrictions

  Hi all, I have encountered some difficulties while trying to validate an incoming soap message to a service I have running on JBoss AS (v. 5.1.0). In my code, I have explicitly set some fields to be required, eg: public class MyClass { @XmlElement(required=true, nillable=false) private List<myOtherObjects> myList; } This requirement is also reflected in the WSDL (note the lack of minOccurs="0"): <xs:element maxOccurs="unbounded" name="myList" type="tns:myOtherObjects" /> However, when I do a test soap message that has myList set to empty or null, these restrictions are completely ignored, forcing me to validate manually within the application logic on the service. I did some searching on the Internet and found out that, on WebLogic, the validation does not seem to be enabled by default, though it can be turned on by modifying the weblogic-webservices.xml file. (http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=783972&tstart=115) I’m wondering if there is something similar that I have to do with JBoss AS to enable automatic validation before the soap message reaches the service. • Strange behaviour using Drag and Drop in word 2003 automation in headers

  Hi! I am developing a template based addin for Word 2003 which allows the user to drag and drop elements from a listbox into the word document. Unfortunately I'm getting a really strange behaviour when trying to drop elements in the document's header. Open the template and type something in the header Close the header and insert some content on the page Add a page break. Switch to page layout mode where and set zoom level to "Two Pages" Open the header Slowly Drag and Drop an list item from the list box to the header. See multiple Page Setups dialogs occur which cause Word to crash. Here is my code: // in ThisDocument.cs public MyUserControl _control; public void Init() { _control = new MyUserControl(); ActionsPane.Controls.Add(_control); ActionsPane.Visible = true; } // in MyUserControl.cs public void listBox1_MouseDown(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { DoDragDrop("something", DragDropEffects.Copy); } Have I done somethinkg wrong with implementing Drag and Drop? • Squid handling of concurrent cache misses

  We're using a Squid cache to off-load traffic from our web servers, ie. it's setup as a reverse-proxy responding to inbound requests before they hit our web servers. When we get blitzed with concurrent requests for the same request that's not in the cache, Squid proxies all the requests through to our web ("origin") servers. For us, this behavior isn't ideal: our origin servers gets bogged down trying to fulfill N identical requests concurrently. Instead, we'd like the first request to proxy through to the origin server, the rest of the requests to queue at the Squid layer, and then all be fulfilled by Squid when the origin server has responded to that first request. Does anyone know how to configure Squid to do this? We've read through the documentation multiple times and thoroughly web-searched the topic, but can't figure out how to do it. We use Akamai too and, interestingly, this is its default behavior. (However, Akamai has so many nodes that we still see lots of concurrent requests in certain traffic spike scenarios, even with Akamai's super-node feature enabled.) This behavior is clearly configurable for some other caches, eg. the Ehcache documentation offers the option "Concurrent Cache Misses: A cache miss will cause the filter chain, upstream of the caching filter to be processed. To avoid threads requesting the same key to do useless duplicate work, these threads block behind the first thread." Some folks call this behavior a "blocking cache," since the subsequent concurrent requests block behind the first request until it's fulfilled or timed-out. Thx for looking over my noob question! • How to display objects with dynamic fields in wpf data grid?

  Hi! I want to display and edit some objects in a WPF data grid and I'm looking for a good way to do so. All objects I want to display have the same fields, but every execution the fields of my objects can differ. Here is a piece of the interface to illustrate what I mean: public interface IMyObject { IEnumerable<string> GetFieldNames(); IEnumerable<Type> GetFieldTypes(); object GetField(string name); void SetField(string name, object value); } How can I generate a data grid which displays this kind of objects? I thought of XAML generation to define the columns, but I'm still facing the problem of accessing the fields. I think I could realize this with value converters, another option would be to dynamically create a type which exposes the dynamic fields with properties. • IIS 7 Request routing

  Not sure the title is right. I have my site configured in IIS7 and I have another partner site which runs on a different port eg. http:// localhost:1234 /mysite. Can I have my parent site to have a virtual site http:// localhost /mysite to route requests to the partner site http://localhost:1234 /mysite. I should not redirect but I should basically proxy the requests. Any help here is appreciable. Thanks in advance.

• Windows server backup fails at 40%

  I´m configuring windows server backup as full system backup. It starts fine, but when it´s making system drive (c:) backup it stops at 40% every time i try. It only backups 7.28 GB of the total 18.19 GB. I tried changing destination drive and also checking c: filesystem in order to find any problem, but it seems to be ok and the problem is still the same. I got a message telling that the backup is completed with warnings. The warning details says that it didn´t complete backup because of input/output error in source or destination. Thanks for your help.

• Why does Cacti keep waiting for dead poller processes?

  sorry for the length I am currently setting up a new Debian (6.0.5) server. I put Cacti (0.8.7g) on it yesterday and have been battling with it ever since. Initial issue The initial issue I was observing, was that my graphs weren't updating. So I checked my cacti.log and found this concerning message: POLLER: Poller[0] Maximum runtime of 298 seconds exceeded. Exiting. That can't be good, right? So I went checking and started poller.php myself (via sudo -u www-data php poller.php --force). It will pump out a lot of message (which all look like what I would expect) and then hang for a minute. After that 1 minute, it will loop the following message: Waiting on 1 of 1 pollers. This goes on for 4 more minutes until the process is forcefully ended for running longer than 300s. So far so good I went on for a good hour trying to determine what poller might still be running, until I got to the conclusion that there simply is no running poller. Debugging I checked poller.php to see how that warning is issued and why. On line 368, Cacti will retrieve the number of finished processes from the database and use that value to calculate how many processes are still running. So, let's see that value! I added the following debug code into poller.php: print "Finished: " . $finished_processes . " - Started: " . $started_processes . "\n"; Result This will print the following within seconds of starting poller.php: Finished: 0 - Started: 1 Waiting on 1 of 1 pollers. Finished: 1 - Started: 1 So the values are being read and are valid. Until we get to the part where it keeps looping: Finished: - Started: 1 Waiting on 1 of 1 pollers. Suddenly, the value is gone. Why? Putting var_dump() in there confirms the issue: NULL Finished: - Started: 1 Waiting on 1 of 1 pollers. The return value is NULL. How can that be when querying SELECT COUNT()...? (SELECT COUNT() should always return one result row, shouldn't it?) More debugging So I went into lib\database.php and had a look at that db_fetch_cell(). A bit of testing confirmed, that the result set is actually empty. So I added my own database query code in there to see what that would do: $finished_processes = db_fetch_cell("SELECT count(*) FROM poller_time WHERE poller_id=0 AND end_time>'0000-00-00 00:00:00'"); print "Finished: " . $finished_processes . " - Started: " . $started_processes . "\n"; $mysqli = new mysqli("localhost","cacti","cacti","cacti"); $result = $mysqli->query("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM poller_time WHERE poller_id=0 AND end_time>'0000-00-00 00:00:00';"); $row = $result->fetch_assoc(); var_dump( $row ); This will output Finished: - Started: 1 array(1) { ["COUNT(*)"]=> string(1) "2" } Waiting on 1 of 1 pollers. So, the data is there and can be accessed without any problems, just not with the method Cacti is using? Double-check that! I enabled MySQL logging to make sure I'm not imagining things. Sure enough, when the error message is looped, the cacti.log reads as if it was querying like mad: 06/29/2012 08:44:00 PM - CMDPHP: Poller[0] DEVEL: SQL Cell: "SELECT count(*) FROM cacti.poller_time WHERE poller_id=0 AND end_time>'0000-00-00 00:00:00'" 06/29/2012 08:44:01 PM - CMDPHP: Poller[0] DEVEL: SQL Cell: "SELECT count(*) FROM cacti.poller_time WHERE poller_id=0 AND end_time>'0000-00-00 00:00:00'" 06/29/2012 08:44:02 PM - CMDPHP: Poller[0] DEVEL: SQL Cell: "SELECT count(*) FROM cacti.poller_time WHERE poller_id=0 AND end_time>'0000-00-00 00:00:00'" But none of these queries are logged my MySQL. Yet, when I add my own database query code, it shows up just fine. What the heck is going on here?

• Random software/shutdown problems Mac mini

  Hello I have a Mac mini using OS X 10.5.8. Recently I've been having problems that are becoming increasingly severe. Particular symptoms: Firefox "quits" but the dot on the dock remains. If I try shutting down at this point I can't and have to use the power button. I can't start Firefox either. Significantly higher than normal crash rate for CS4 Illustrator Photoshop and Dreamweaver. If Firefox remains open when sleeping the Mac, on waking up firefox is completely unresponsive and must be restarted. Can cause problem 1. Today I lost all my FTP settings for Dreamweaver CS4 Bluetooth switches on when booting despite being switched off. Network password retention is somewhat erractic. Tried running Apple Hardware Test as described in the manual. Cannot access install disk by pressing D at startup. My pen tablet (Bamboo) lost my preferences. Tried unstalling software and now cannot re-install. I've never had problems of this level outside warranty before so I don't know much about debugging Macs. Solutions attempted: Disable bluetooth (see problem 5) Disable time machine Run appple harware test (see problem 7) Tried using activity monitor but don't know which processes are normal Tried uninstalling more recent software. I don't have any idea what to do. It seems like a hard disk failure but I don't have the know how to continue.

• Using DNS in iproute2

  In my setup I can redirect the default gateway based on the source address. Let's say a user is connected through tun0 (10.2.0.0/16) is redirect to another vpn. That works fine! ip rule add from 10.2.0.10 lookup vpn1 In a second rule I redirect the default gateway to another gateway if the user access a certain ip adress: ip rule add from 10.2.0.10 to 94.142.154.71 lookup vpn2 If I access the page on 94.142.154.71 (myip.is) the user is correctly routed and I can see the ip of the second vpn. On any other pages the ip address of vpn1 is shown. But how do I tell iproute2 that all request at e. g. google.com should be redirected through vpn2?

• Create Windows AMI with instance storage

  I have a business use case and workflow where local/instance/ephemeral storage for an EC2 instance is ideal. Unfortunately I'm coupled to a Windows platform for this particular task and the EC2 Windows offering appears to have some deficiencies related to AMI creation. In essence, I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to attach local instance storage to a Windows EC2 instance using the typical command line interface (because the Amazon Website GUI doesn't support it) and then to somehow create an AMI based upon that. I've tried creating a snapshot and then creating a Windows AMI based upon the snapshot, but of course the docs say this is unsupported and makes an unbootable AMI. In short, here's what I'm trying to do: Be able to run a Windows instance (EBS/S3 instance doesn't matter) Attach local instance storage as drive D: Persist that configuration as an AMI such that I can start lots of them as necessary from either the GUI, command line, or REST API. Be able to take a launched instance, update software, shutdown, and create another AMI based upon that. Wash, rinse, repeat. One other potential option which isn't horrible, but isn't ideal is to create an AMI which has 2 EBS volumes already attached (system+apps and data). Essentially, every time I startup an instance based upon the AMI it'll create 2 new EBS volumes of pre-determined size. I'm trying to avoid that scenario if possible.
