• Need HP recovery partition info

  I'm configuring a new HP Pavillion DV4 with a 320 GB disk. I made the recovery DVDs, then did a couple other things (including deleting the recovery partition), and finally decided to restore the system. Unfortunately, the recovery process fails; the three DVDs are read (the recovery program says "Reformatting the Windows partition" and "Copying files required to restore the hard drive") but after it finishes reading the 3rd, and the progress bar reaches 100%, it fails with error 0xe0f00013 - Googling it didn't return anything at all. I'm afraid this may be because I deleted the partitions. So, I'm kindly asking for one of the following, in order of preference, from a HP Pavillion DV4 with a 320 GB hard disk or a similar enough one : 1) A dump of the MBR 2) The type and size of all the partitions in a "new" system so I can try to make a partition table resembling the original one. BTW, I thought the recovery DVDs were supposed to work even if the entire disk was wiped - isn't that the case? Thanks!

• Recover an HP recovery partition

  I have a (semi)-dead hard drive with an HP recovery partition on it. My goal is to Buy a new hard drive Copy the recovery partition to a drive ( dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=~/recovery.bak ) Make a new partition of 12000 mb with Windows 7 Copy back recovery partition to the new drive ( dd if=~/recovery.bak of=/dev/sdb1 ) Then press F11 when the laptop boots. However, this doesn't work. Any idea why? Edit: I suspect the F11 doesn't work because the laptop tries to boot the laptop, because my partition is the primary partition of the drive. Does anyone have any experience dealing with stuff like this?

  in July this year, we have changed the URL structure of the website from: Post: domain.com/blog/post/986/dance/heart-beats-dance-video-by-chinatsu/ Category: domain.com/blog/index/cosplay/ to Post: domain.com/dance/heart-beats-dance-video-by-chinatsu-986/ Category: domain.com/cosplay/ Everything was (supposedly) properly redirected with 301 redirects and it first seemed that the traffic returned after a couple of days, but it has now been close to 2 months and things keep going worse although Google is slowly indexing the changes. What is worrying me even more is that the Pages crawled per day from Webmaster Tools started drastically dropping a few days ago and has just reached a new low in months (from over 2000 to 700). Should I be worried or will things sort out eventually?

• Deleted Partition Recovery

  Recently i was installing ubuntu 12.04 on my system. There were 4 partitions on my system and i selected one of the four partition for the installation and chose the option of re sizing the partition. Initially my partition was of size 100+GB and i created another partition out of it of size 15GB (EXT4). Now the moment i changed this partition structure my original partition got lost along with its data and i am left with 50GB partition and 50GB unallocated free space. Now the data that i have lost is meant a lot to me and i want to recover that data. So is there any way i can recover it ? And i haven't checked "format" option while resizing the partition.   I have upgraded the HDD in a Samsung laptop and would like to restore the "Press F4 for recovery" partition. My new disk has three partitions, System, Windows, and Recovery. I did a dd of the recovery partition from the old HDD to the new. I also set the diag flag on the new HDD. F4 recovery still is not working. tldr: I mapped my new disk like my old disk with the exception of exact sizes. I did the recover partition from old to new via livecd. F4 recovery does not work

  IE is not filling the password field automatically when i click on the bookmarked url. But it's working on firefix,chrome etc. I tried with autocomplete="on" but no use. IE will fill the password only When i select a usename from the possible user names which the browser had kept for each login. And when i logout, user name will be filled in without the password. ( only in IE for other browsers both are filled). Thanks....

• Supermicro BIOS recovery - SUPER.ROM

  I have a Supermicro X9SCL+-F motherboard that I flashed a beta BIOS to, then the flash went bad when I tried to flash back to the latest stable. I am attempting to recover using their SUPER.ROM recovery from a flash drive without success. I read in the manual that if I hold down Ctrl +Home  while powering on the server I can do a BIOS recovery from a flash drive. I hold down those keys, hear the desired two beeps and I can see the activity LED on the flash drive activate. Unfortunately, instead of the monitor turning on and allowing a BIOS recovery as the manual indicates, I hear five beeps, followed shortly after by 3 beeps. I grabbed the latest BIOS from their site (x9scm2.508.zip) and extracted it to my flash drive and renamed it to SUPER.ROM. Their instructions are not clear if any ROM can serve as the SUPER.ROM file, or if I need a special SUPER.ROM file to initiate the recovery at which time I can supply a known good ROM. Does anyone have any expertise in ROM recovery for Supermicro boards? Am I missing some key step? Can any known good ROM file function as the SUPER.ROM file for recovery?

• Acer recovery disks not bootable?

  We got a new Acer laptop with Vista installed at work. As it's getting ready to go out in the field, we wanted to do a burn-in test on it. We made the recovery DVDs before we ran the test. Part of the burn-in was bonnie++, which does a destructive read/write test of the hard drive. The machine passed with flying colors, but after trying to boot to the recovery DVD to being re-installing the system, the machine began to try PXE boot after a while. After doing some googling, it appears these 'recovery' disks expect a certain recovery partition to exist on the hard drive, and are in fact not bootable at all, and are useless in absence of the recovery partition. Is this the case, and is this "The Way Things Are" with all PC manufacturers and Windows Vista+ nowadays? How do I get my hands on actual bootable DVDs? I've emailed Acer support. I see an option on their site to purchase recovery disks, but I have the suspicion that these are the same non-bootable disks that I burned on the new system. Will Acer provide actual boot disks?

• How to prevent wireless network asking password when briefly out of range

  When I'm connected to a wireless network from quite far away I sometimes briefly lose the connection. Then Network Manager prompts me to re-confirm the password as if it suspected that was the problem that caused the loss of connection (the password is already filled in in the dialog box). Is this normal behaviour? Can I prevent it from happening and have Network Manager automatically reconnect without the password dialog box when the wireless network comes back into range? I'm using 10.04 (32bit, Gnome) on an Acer Aspire one.

  I lost my Ubuntu user account password... I saw some other questions on this topic that had answers telling me to restart the computer, press the left shift key after BIOS, go to root, type "passwd [username]" and all this other stuff, but none of that worked. After I typed a new password and retyped it, it gave me an error message saying something like "Authentication Manipulation Error." There was another question complaining about this, but there weren't any useful answers that worked. Does anybody know of a way for me to retrieve or reset my password? Am I doing something wrong with that method I mentioned?

  I have bought a laptop with Ubuntu 12.04, which runs fine but wants to update. I don't have the password and it won't let me update anything. I have downloaded 12.04 in order to re-install it and it tells me it isn't suitable for my processor. The machine is a Dell latitude D505. I tried downloading the i386 version and on booting with the disc, I get: This kernel requires features not present on CPU. pae. Unable to boot. All I'm trying to do is to let software updater do it's stuff but as it asks for a password, I can't proceed. I've tried changing password in root shell but that doesn't work. Any ideas? Nothing seems to be working with this problem, so maybe I'll just wait for the next official release and try again.

  I was asked a while ago to setup a server such that only authenticated users can access files. It was like a test server for clients to view WIP sites. More recently, I want to do something similar for some of my files. Tho they are not very confidential, I wish that I am the only one viewing it. I thought of doing the same, Create a robots.txt User-agent: * Disallow: / Setup some password protection, .htpasswd seems like a very ugly way to do it. It will prompt me even when I log into FTP. I wonder if software method like password protected posts in Wordpress will do the trick of locking out the public and hiding content from Search Engines? Or some self made PHP script will do the trick?

• Proper password handling for login

  I have read a lot about PHP login security recently, but many questions on Stack Overflow regarding security are outdated. I understand bcrypt is one of the best ways of hashing passwords today. However, for my site, I believe sha512 will do very well, at least to begin with. (I mean bcrypt is for bigger sites, sites that require high security, right?) I´m also wonder about salting. Is it necessary for every password to have its own unique salt? Should I have one field for the salt and one for the password in my database table? What would be a decent salt today? Should I join the username together with the password and add a random word/letter/special character combination to it? Thanks for your help!

• Cannot save password in Evolution?

  I'm using evolution in lubuntu. Configuring the email accounts is OK. Then a window appears asking for the mail password. There is an option to add the password to the keyring. When this is checked nothing happens. The window doesn't close either. When I repeat the same steps with the option to add the password unchecked, it works fine. But I have to enter the passwords every time I start evolution. I guess it's a problem with the keyring (just a guess). How can I fix this ?

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS I thought that everything in my Documents folder was being backed up by Ubuntu1, as everytime I put a file in my documents folder a box popped up stating backing up file. When I looked at the Left hand list of programmes on my desktop screen there was an extra Box in the list. Clicked the Box and it stated encryption Password required. It seems the latest files have not been backed up as an Encryption Password is required. Can anyone explain for me, what is this Encription Password and how do I get it.

  My mom's Vista Home Premium (32 bit) password was changed. My mom said that she didn't change it and she doesn't think anyone else here did either. So.. Could this have been done remotely? I'm running Ophcrack now, what else can we do? (I haven't tried safe mode yet.) I'm a techie and somewhat baffled. Help! Edit: ophcrack found empty LM but no NT hash is displayed. Entering safe mode... Edit2: I'm an idiot. Well sort of. Ophcrack could not crack the password which was just lowercase English letters, but for some reason, I was able to login using the orignal password in safe mode. Once in safe mode I "changed the password" back to it's original value and was then able to login in regular mode... It's time to run a virus scan.

When the recovery disk attempted to reformat the hard disk, it failed at 22%. The error message provided was not very informative, just the error code "0x400110020000 1005". A google search turned up some people with a similar problem who asserted that HP has been know to ship corrupted recovery DVDs. The recovery disk did manage to reformat the the recovery partition before failing though, so recovering from the partition is no longer an option. It would be possible to reinstall from an off-the-shelf retail copy of Vista and then pull the drivers from HP's website, but I don't have access to a copy of Vista, and it would really be outrageous to have to purchase a new OS when I have a perfectly valid license already. Thought about biting the bullet and upgrading to Windows 7, but my understanding is that without Vista installed I'd be unable to use the upgrade version, and be forced to purchase the more expensive non-upgrade retail copy (!). Can anyone suggest a possible solution to this Catch-22? I've run out of ideas.

• SqlServer2005 Enterprise Fast Recovery, SqlAgent Availability, and Replication

  I have a database under SqlServer2005 Enterprise 64bit sp3, that is in phase 3 of 3 of recovery after a reboot without normal shutdown. It looks like with fast Recovery, the database became available when recovery moved into phase 3. However, it seems (based on message in SqlAgent log), that SqlAgent is "started" but not available to run jobs until recovery completes. I have other databases on the same server that are transactional publications. It seems to me that if I let users update the published databases, transactions will start to build up in the log, but won't be moved to the distribution database or onto the subscribers because SqlAgent isn't running jobs. Putting in the install DVD trying to do a repair actually brings up the very same System Revoery dialog again. Nothing has changed configuration wise. Any ideas?
