  • PostgreSQL failover cluster on Windows Server

    - by user36997
We are looking for advice on how to setup a basic failover cluster for our application: We will be using 4 machines running Microsoft Windows Server (most probably 2003). All four will always run our application, which is essentially a web service. Load balancing is "outsourced" - somebody else handles the distribution of the web requests among the servers. Only one of the servers will be running the PostgreSQL server actively at any given time. Another server (of the four) also has the DB installed, but is on standby/passive. The DB data is stored on shared storage. No copying data between servers. Reads are done very frequently by many end-users, and in rather small chunks of data. Writes are done much less frequently, by less users, and in very large bulks of data. Now, how can one configure Microsoft Cluster Service to keep only one instance of the DB server and 4 instances (1 per server) of our application at all times? And does PostgreSQL integrate neatly with MSCS at all? Update: Instead of keeping the data on shared storage, I also consider using log shipping to replicate data on a couple of DB servers. There are two issues with this option: Log shipping only makes sure that I have a second server that gets all of the data and is ready to take over. How do I implement the actual failure detection and failover switch? Switching back: Suppose the master fails and the system automatically fails over to the slave, and later the master comes back online. I understand that with WAL shipping this will require to reconfigure the log shipping once again, and that switching back is far from seamless. Is that so?

  • PostgreSQL user authentication against PAM

    - by elmuerte
I am trying to set up authentication via PAM for PostgreSQL 9.3. I already managed to get this working on an Ubuntu 12.04 server, but I am unable to get this working on a Centos-6 install. The relevant pg_hba.conf line: host all all 0.0.0.0/0 pam pamservice=postgresql93 The pam.d/postgressql93 is the default config shipped with the official postgresql 9.3 package: #%PAM-1.0 auth include password-auth account include password-auth When a user tries to authenticate the following is reported in secure log: hostname unix_chkpwd[31807]: check pass; user unknown hostname unix_chkpwd[31808]: check pass; user unknown hostname unix_chkpwd[31808]: password check failed for user (myuser) hostname postgres 10.1.0.1(61459) authentication: pam_unix(postgresql93:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=26 euid=26 tty= ruser= rhost= user=myuser The relevant content of password-auth config is: auth required pam_env.so auth sufficient pam_unix.so nullok try_first_pass auth requisite pam_succeed_if.so uid >= 500 quiet auth required pam_deny.so account required pam_unix.so account sufficient pam_localuser.so account sufficient pam_succeed_if.so uid < 500 quiet account required pam_permit.so The problem is with the pam_unix.so. It is unable to validate the password, and unable to retrieve the user info (when I remove the auth entry of pam_unix.so). The Centos-6 install is only 5 days old, so it does not have a lot of baggage. The unix_chkpwd is suid and has execute rights for everybody, so it should be able to check the shadow file (which has no privileges at all?).

  • Postgresql connection refused

    - by Jonathan
I'm trying to remotely connect to my postgresql database. I have two virtual machines set up both running ubuntu 14.04. I am trying to connect to the second vm using the first vm using psql -h 10.0.1.23 -U postgres -d postgres But I receive the error: Could not connect to server: Connection refused Is the server running on host "10.0.1.23" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? I have changed the pg_hba.conf and added host all all 10.0.1.64/24 md5 host all all * md5 host all all 0.0.0.0/0 md5 And changed the postgresql.conf listen_address=" * " In an attempt to allow all incoming connections. I have also tried to change the firewall settings, but I am unsure of whether or not the ports are properly listening for the connection. Edit: Output of netstat -an | grep -E '^tcp[^6].*LISTEN' tcp 0 0 127.0.1.1:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:23 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:5432 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN

  • Postgresql Data Aggregation over WAN Securely

    - by Zach
Hey guys, Need some advice on how to proceed with this situation: My current scenario is that I have several postgresql (50+) boxes deployed throughout various locations and data centers and a beefy postgresql box setup at a homebase location. All of the deployed boxes have identical database layouts. I'm looking for a solution that would allow for a few things. I realize some of these options overlap and some might only contain mutually exclusive solutions. However, I'm interested to hear your thoughts :) Remotely query the deployed boxes and pull the results back to the homebase box for processing. Nightly (remote) "sync" or dump the deployed boxes' databases to a master database on the homebase box. Remotely push a table entry to all of the deployed boxes from the homebase box. Ensure security of data in transit, and remotely deployed boxes. Up to this point I've been floating on a homebrew multithreaded python/perl system that SSH's into these boxes remotely, which are ACL'ed off to the homebase server and pulls (or pushes) the raw query results over the ssh connection. I have even touched #2 (remote syncing) as I know that would get nasty really quick. I'm interested in any ideas for a more elegant solution that can scale up and stick to my FreeBSD/Linux environment.

  • g++ problem with -l option and PostgreSQL

    - by difek
Hi I've written simple program. Here a code: #include <iostream> #include <stdio.h> #include <D:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.4\include\libpq-fe.h> #include <string> using namespace std; int main() { PGconn *conn; PGresult *res; int rec_count; int row; int col; cout << "ble ble: " << 8 << endl; conn = PQconnectdb("dbname=db_pm host=localhost user=postgres password=postgres"); if (PQstatus(conn) == CONNECTION_BAD) { puts("We were unable to connect to the database"); exit(0); } } I'm trying to connect with PostgreSQL. I compile this code with following command: gcc -I/"d:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\" -L/"d:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.4\lib\" -lpq -o firstcpp.o firstcpp.cpp This command is from following site: http://www.mkyong.com/database/how-to-building-postgresql-libpq-programs/ And when I compile it I get following error: /cygnus/cygwin-b20/H-i586-cygwin32/i586-cygwin32/bin/ld: cannot open -lpq: No such file or directory collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Does anyone help me? • Load Balancing and Failover for Read-Only PostgreSQL Database

    - by Eric J.
Scenario Multiple application servers host web services written in Java, running in SpringSource dm Server. To implement a new requirement, they will need to query a read-only PostgreSQL database. Issue To support redundancy, at least two PostgreSQL instances will be running. Access to PostgreSQL must be load balanced and must auto-fail over to currently running instances if an instance should go down. Auto-discovery of newly running instances is desirable but not required. Research I have reviewed the official PostgreSQL documentation on this issue. However, that focuses on the more general case of read/write access to the database. Top google results tend to lead to older newsgroup messages or dead projects such as Sequoia or DB Balancer, as well as one active project PG Pool II Question What are your real-world experiences with PG Pool II? What other simple and reliable alternatives are available?

  • Minimal files to run a fully-functional PostgreSQL in Windows

    - by fxam
I would like to bundle PostgreSQL into my application. I downloaded the PostgreSQL 9 beta zip without the installer. After extraction, there are 8 directories. I found out that at least the following directories are required to run PostgreSQL properly, at least under my experiments. bin lib share The question is, are the above three directories really sufficient to run a fullly functional PostgreSQL? Do I need the 'include' and 'symbols' directories? Also, can I remove 'share\locale' if I don't use these locales?

  • XAMPP with PostgreSQL

    - by fred smith
I'm looking for a package like XAMPP, but instead of MySQL it would use PostgreSQL. I've done some searching and haven't turned up anything other than doing a full server setup of both.

  • How to see active connections and "current activity" in PostgreSQL 8.4

    - by Evgeny
I'm investigating an issue with DB connections being left open indefinitely, causing problems on the DB server. How do I see currently open connections to a PostgreSQL server, particularly those using a specific database? Ideally I'd like to see what command is executing there as well. Basically, I'm looking for something equivalent to the "Current Activity" view in MSSQL.

  • How to restore PostgreSQL database from .tar file?

    - by Stephen
I have all PostgreSQL databases backed up during incremental backups using WHM, which creates a $dbName.tar file. Data is stored in these .tar files, but I do not know how to restore it back into the individual databases via SSH. In particular the file location. I have been using: pg_restore -d client03 /backup/cpbackup/daily/client03/psql/client03.tar which generates the error 'could not open input file: Permission denied' Any assistance appreciated.

  • PostgreSQL encrypted backups

    - by Nikhil Gupte
Is it possible to ensure that dumps taken from a PostgreSQL db are always encrypted? The data in the database is highly sensitive and we cannot afford un-authorized personnel, including Sys Admins who need to backup the db, to access the actual data.

  • I'm managing SQLite, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases and want a tool for this locally

    - by littlejim84
I develop web applications on Mac OSX in SQLite, MySQL and PostgreSQL and these are then put on the webserver. I want to be able to take the brunt out of looking at the terminal locally when dealing with these databases - is there any software available (free or otherwise) that can handle all three of these database technologies in a GUI for the Mac that is actually decent and worth it?

  • PostgreSQL, Ubuntu, NetBeans IDE (Part 1)

    - by Geertjan
While setting up PostgreSQL from scratch, with the aim to use it in NetBeans IDE, I found the following resources helpful: http://railskey.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/postgresql-installation-in-ubuntu-12-04/ http://ohdevon.wordpress.com/2011/09/17/postgresql-to-netbeans-1/ http://ohdevon.wordpress.com/2011/09/19/postgresql-to-netbeans-2/ For quite a while I had problems relating to  "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432", which had something to do with "postmaster.pid", which I somehow solved via a link I can't find anymore, and which may not have been a problem to begin with. A key moment was this one, which was useful for setting the password of a new user I'd created: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7695962/postgresql-password-authentication-failed-for-user-postgres This was useful for setting up a table in my database, which I did by pasting in the below into NetBeans after I made the connection there: http://use-the-index-luke.com/sql/example-schema/postgresql/where-clause Now I have a database set up with all permissions everywhere (which turned out to be the hard part) correct: The next step will be to create a NetBeans Platform application based on this database. I'm assuming it shouldn't be any different to what's described in the NetBeans Platform CRUD Tutorial.

  • How to tune down the Hyperic built-in postgresql database for a small setup

    - by Svish
We are testing out Hyperic 4.5.1 in a quite small environment for now. Currently there are just 1-5 agents and there probably won't be any more than 10-15. When I run ps ax there are 20(!) postgres processes running. For a small setup like this, that can't be necessary, can it? I'm a software developer and don't have much experience with setting up servers and such though, so don't really know. Either way, what settings are appropriate for a small Hyperic setup like this? Current, default and untouched configuration file, hqdb/data/postgresql.conf: # ----------------------------- # PostgreSQL configuration file # ----------------------------- # # This file consists of lines of the form: # # name = value # # (The '=' is optional.) White space may be used. Comments are introduced # with '#' anywhere on a line. The complete list of option names and # allowed values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation. The # commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values. # # Please note that re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it # to the default value, unless you restart the server. # # Any option can also be given as a command line switch to the server, # e.g., 'postgres -c log_connections=on'. Some options can be changed at # run-time with the 'SET' SQL command. # # This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a # SIGHUP. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the # server for the changes to take effect, or use "pg_ctl reload". I am trying to install postgresql on ubuntu. I tried installing postgresql using apt-get install postgresql Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... • [newbie]Webservice - Threads - close if no active threads, if any activen, then wait till its compl

    - by Raj
Hi I have an ASP.Net webservice running. When the system date changes, i want to close all the threads and restart them again, if the thread/s aren't doing any work. If any of the thread/s is in the process of doing some work(active threads), then i need to wait till the current thread/s complete its process and then close. This will prevent from aborting any current process. Any ideas on how i can perform such a task? Thanks PS:I am new to ASP.NET and Multithreading.

  • Python: some newbie questions on sys.stderr and using function as argument

    - by Cawas
I'm just starting on Python and maybe I'm worrying too much too soon, but anyways... log = "/tmp/trefnoc.log" def logThis (text, display=""): msg = str(now.strftime("%Y-%m-%d %H:%M")) + " TREfNOC: " + text if display != None: print msg + display logfile = open(log, "a") logfile.write(msg + "\n") logfile.close() return msg def logThisAndExit (text, display=""): msg = logThis(text, display=None) sys.exit(msg + display) That is working, but I don't like how it looks. Is there a better way to write this (maybe with just 1 function) and is there any other thing I should be concerned under exiting? Now to some background... Sometimes I will call logThis just to log and display. Other times I want to call it and exit. Initially I was doing this: logThis ("ERROR. EXITING") sys.exit() Then I figured that wouldn't properly set the stderr, thus the current code shown on the top. My first idea was actually passing "sys.exit" as an argument, and defining just logThis ("ERROR. EXITING", call=sys.exit) defined as following (showing just the relevant differenced part): def logThis (text, display="", call=print): msg = str(now.strftime("%Y-%m-%d %H:%M")) + " TREfNOC: " + text call msg + display But that obviously didn't work. I think Python doesn't store functions inside variables. I couldn't (quickly) find anywhere if Python can have variables taking functions or not! Maybe using an eval function? I really always try to avoid them, tho. Sure I thought of using if instead of another def, but that wouldn't be any better or worst. Anyway, any thoughts?
