• Kubuntu permanent install won't attach sound card

  I installed Kubuntu Live version and sound card visible in the volume/mixer panel. After installing the permanent version I have a dummy output where my sound card should be, therefore no sound. I re-installed the live version three times and then to permanent but the same problem each time. There is a very brief error on boot up to the permanent version that says: error. cannot attach card default. no such file or directory. I'm running Kubuntu 12.04 on a Mac G4 PPC with no other OS. I'm very new to Linux. I am able to follow instructions to help resolve this, but I'm not familiar with the OS.

• kext for 10.4 - 10.6

  I have a filter scheme driver with four binaries for 10.4 PPC, 10.4 i386, 10.5 & 10.6 i386 and 10.6 x86_64. I need to put them all into one kext. I don't think I can just lipo them together because of the two different i386 binaries. How can I get them all into the same kext bundle?

• what does macosx-version-min imply?

  When I pass compiler flag "-mmacosx-version-min=10.5", what does it mean? I think it implies the result binary is x86, not ppc, but is it 32 bits or 64 bits? I'm compiling on snow leopard, so default output binary is 64 bits. I'm not passing -universal, it's not 32bit-64bit universal binary, I think.

• HTML5 enabled browser for Windows Mobile 6

  I did some research on Google but I couldn't find any HTML5 browser for Windows Mobile 6. The main resource I'm looking for in HTML5 is WebDatabase and/or localStorage. With a little research I found Iris (http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-iris-browser.html), a Webkit based browser with some HTML5 features, but localStorage and Web Database doesn't work on it. Does anyone know any browser with storage capability for Windows Mobile 6?

• How do I change the build's SDK version in Xcode?

  I'm using Xcode 2.5 on Mac 10.4.11 PPC. javac -version returns 1.5.x yet when I imported my source code and tried to build it in Xcode, I get errors all over because generics, annotations, and for-each loops are not supported in -source 1.3. I thought I found the setting to change the source version in Xcode in the above but it doesn't work. Any ideas?

• iMac G5 20" (First All-In-One White Screen) Cannot Connect To Internet

  The Scenario I've got an iMac G5 20" (First All-In-One White Screen) PPC. It has an Airport Extreme Network card in order to wirelessly to connect to the internet. For the most part I connect using ethernet as opposed to wirelessly, but recently have had the need to connect using the wireless. The Hardware BT Home Broadband Wireless Router. iMac G5 20" From about 5 years ago (First All-In-One White Screen) The Issue Even though I know for a fact that It has connected to the internet wireslessly in the past, for some reason it can discover the wireless router, but upon entering the password it fails to connect. I have tried multiple times to no avail. I have 2 other Mac's on the network and a pc that can all connect wirelessly. However both the mac's. Question Any ideas as to why my really old iMac G5 can't connect wirelessly anymore!?

• Streaming flash video does not work on my Mac OS X

  Flash videos do not work properly on my Mac. On this Vimeo video, for example, it shows only the beginning frame, and audio stutters like crazy, playing audio for a quarter second or so, then silence, then playing again, etc. I have Flash version 10,0,42,34 on Mac OS 10.5.8. It's a PowerBook G4 (PPC). I tried it in Firefox 3.5.5 and Safari 4.0.3. I tried reinstalling Flash, restarting the computer, and using a fresh user profile in Firefox (so that no extensions are interfering with the site), loading the video fully before playing, but nothing helps. I noticed that youtube videos work better, once loaded enough, although the picture does halt briefly once every 10 or so seconds, even when it's fully loaded.

• Remote Installing OS X 10.5 on a PowerBook G4

  I recently acquired a PowerBook G4 (always loved the PPC architecture over Intel when it comes to Apple), currently it has OS X 10.4 installed. Unfortunately I can't find the original 10.5 install disc I had, though I made an ISO of it some time ago, which I've now burnt to a DVD-R DL disc (the SuperDrive is a DVD-R only iirc). This disc keeps being ejected by the PowerBook G4 (reads other discs just fine, except one). So I've been pondering doing a remote install, however the instructions I've seen are for MacBooks - I have DVD or CD Sharing installed, but the part in the instructions (http://guides.macrumors.com/Complete_Steps_to_Perform_a_Clean_OS_X_Reinstall_on_Your_MacBook_Air#Using_Remote_Install) about the 'Install Assistant', I don't get such a thing - only the BootCamp Installer. So my question is: How do I go about doing a remote install on this PowerBook G4? Or is there another alternative, without forking out on a new drive?

  I'm going to install Magento on AWS Elastic Beanstalk t1.micro (free tier), on Windows or Linux + Nginx + Php-fpm + eAccelerator, CDN (cloudfront), MemcacheD. I will ask my developer to make my website as fast as it can be with as much as possible, minimum AWS utilization. My webstore will have <1000 SKUs and I'm not expecting the traffic without going into thorough SEO/PPC. Now I have three questions: Do I really need Nginx microcaching along with eaccelerator? Do I need AWS Elastic Load Balancer with t1.micro tier for the sake of scalability (as I have heard that magento is resource hungry application, may fully utilize t1.micro AMI) or can I replace AWS ELB with Nginx load balancer? In AWS Elastic Beanstalk?

  Recently, some discussions came up about 32 bit vs. 64 bit implementations of operating systems. While I was composing a message about this topic, I realized that I did not know if there was a correct term for the number of bits supported by an operating system. For example, various versions of Solaris and Linux have 32bit and 64bit releases. Is the distinction "architecture"? In my experience, that has referred to chip types (Intel vs. PPC). Is it a "release"? Typically, I think of a release as a version number a consistent feature set, that might run on different architectures. Maybe it is just "architecture", after all, even though a chip family might have used several different bit sizes over time, the chips themselves are different when you jump from 32bit to 64bit.

• How to upgrade OS on Mac Mini with external USB Drive?

  We have a G4 Mac Mini, circa 2005, running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and we want to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. We have a Leopard install disk, but the optical drive in this mini is broken. So we transferred the install disk image to a USB HDD, but now we can't figure out how to boot off it. From what I've read in Mac forums, some PPC Macs, including some G4's, have been able to boot from USB, even though it sounds like this wasn't officially supported, and it may well depend on the specific model of USB drive and Mac. My Mac says CPU is "PowerPC G4 (1.2)" and Boot ROM is "4.8.9f4". I was hoping I might just find somebody here who had that same Mac Mini and find out if they could make it work. I'd especially like to know any specifics about the USB drive they found success with. Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Mac PPC_7100 ROM for SheepShaver?

  Hello everybody, I still own a PPC 7100/80av, that I bought in early 1995. The Mac is still running fine, but I am not using it often these days. I recently came across SheepShaver and would like to take my old games and apps to the emulation. For SheepShaver I would like to use a copy of my 7100's ROM. Did anybody succeed in saving a working copy of this machines ROM? I tried CopyRom and GetRom, but all I ever saved was a 4MB file good for nothing. I am just wondering what I am missing. Any ideas would be very welcome. Thank you!

I have also downloaded an app for my iPhone which does the same thing, but it uses the same protocol that Server Monitor does.   I maintain a library of different kickstart configurations, mostly for CentOS 5 and 6. It has recently gotten to the point I want to deduplicate as much of this information as possible. I am aware of a couple options out there which can dynamically generate kickstart files. Not interested at this point unless I really need to do that route. I would like to create my Kickstart files using a template along the following line: deploy1-centos5.erb .... install=http://.../$arch/... repo=http://.../$arch/... .... My output naming schema is "deploy1-centos5-x86_64". I'd like to be able to create several kickstart files from a given template, one for 32 bit, one 64, ppc, etc. This would work perfectly if I could readily set the value of arch per each time the template is called to create a file. What is the most ready way to address this?

• What browser is sending user agent beginning mozilla/5.0+, tramslates & into &amp;

  We've got a website which has been running for a few years now. One of our customers has just started having an intermittent problem. Looking at our iis6.0 logs the service works correctly when they have a user agent beginning "mozilla/4.0+" but fails when the user agent begins "mozilla/5.0+". The particular customer only started having this problem on Wednesday. Does anyone know the browser/upgrade which changes the 4.0 to 5.0? The actual problem caused is that an "&" in a url parameter list is being encoded as "&amp;". Anyone seen anything similar? We have other users sending from browsers with the 5.0+ user agent without trouble. Sorry about the tags but don't have the rep to create new ones.   I am a web developer with four years of experience in PHP, MYSQL and experience in Javascript etc. One day I hope to develop a freelance career in web development. Areas of freelance that I am thinking of going towards includes Wordpress, Magento development along with bespoke applications. I am also thinking of doing some consultancy work for clients and businesses when I build up some more experience and technical knowledge. I want to offer a web development service to potential clients that plays on my strengths in what I know but most importantly has a market. Web development can cover so many subjects that its difficult to pick out the areas that have demand. I am also curious to find out if web developers offer services that bring in a monthly income e.g application maintenance or database maintenance? Is there a market for certain areas like WordPress plugins or bespoke applications? Are there certain things to avoid because of work duration, unrealistic client expectations or the fact that its impossible to find a market for it? As professional and experienced freelance web developers have you learned some important do's and don'ts? Is there certain services that the majority of web developers offer because its in high demand? This is the one area of web development freelancing that I cant get my head around. I know there is never a definitive answer but there must be some good practises and general consensus on this subject. Web designers design websites they offer a lump sum and get paid monthly sometimes to add new content, PPC and SEO consultants market sites to the top this will involve monthly payments, web development doesn’t seem so clear cut.

• What is the the maximum time for a user to return to Google for the visit to be flagged up as a bounce in GA?

  I know that Google measures bounce rates by how fast a user returns to the results page after clicking-through to a website. Roughly what is the maximum duration of the visit for the user to then return for it to be considered a bounce? i.e. <5 seconds, <30 seconds? I'm mainly interested as it appears a lot of users clicking through my PPC adverts (Adwords) are bouncing, despite my ads having a high quality score and the page's being entirely related to the adverts copy and at as best tied to what I think user's may be searching for from the key phrases I've selected so the high bounce rate (100% on some keywords) seems a bit strange. If a bounce isn't determined by time, but simply whether a user returns to the SERP after visiting my site or not after any amount of time that would make more sense but the average duration of visit for my keywords with a 100% bounce rate in GA is 00:00:00, which suggests a user immediately returned to the SERPs, which again, is odd. Is my GA data being skewed by https or anything like that? Scratching my head here.

• Extreme Portability: OpenJDK 7 and GlassFish 3.1.1 on Power Mac G5!

  Occasionally you hear someone grumble about platform support for some portion or combination of the Java product "stack". As you're about to see, this really is not as much of a problem as you might think. Our friend John Yeary was able to pull off a pretty slick feat with his vintage Power Mac G5. In his words: Using a build script sent to me by Kurt Miller, build recommendations from Kelly O'Hair, and the great work of the BSD Port team... I created a new build of OpenJDK 7 for my PPC based system using the Zero VM. The results are fantastic. I can run GlassFish 3.1.1 along with all my enterprise applications. I recently had the opportunity to pick up an old G5 for little money and passed on it. What would I do with it? At the time, I didn't think it would be more than a space-consuming novelty. Turns out...I could have had some fun and a useful piece of hardware at the same time. Maybe it's time to go bargain-hunting again.
