• slow record deletion with large ntext values

  I'm having trouble deleting some records via a stored procedure from a table in SQLServer 2008R2 that has ntext columns. The stored proc is timing out and running the query directly takes a very long time. The initial query was a straight "delete from y where x = z" and I've also tried running it in batches of 1000 with transactions but it is still slow and timing out in a stored proc. The majority of the records in the table will not be deleted each time (it's not just a once-off query but will be run other times). The ntext columns are not used in the where clause and I can't change the column types. Any suggestions on the quickest way to delete records with large ntext values? Thanks

• Oracle checking existence before deletion in a trigger

  I have analyzed a hibernate generated oracle database and discovered that a delete of a row from a single table will spawn the firing of 1200+ triggers in order to delete the related rows in child tables. The triggers are all auto-generated the same - an automatic delete of a child row without checking for existence first. As it is impossible to predict which child tables will actually have related rows, I think a viable solution to preventing the firing of the cascaded delete down a deeply branched completely empty limb, would be to check for the existence of a related row before attempting to delete. In other dbms', I could simply state " if exists....." before deleting. Is there a comparable way to do this in oracle?

  Hi, I'm relatively new to C++ and OOP in general and currently trying to make such a class that allows to dereference and delete a dead or invalid pointer without any care of having undefined behavior or program fault in result, and I want to ask you is it a good idea and is there something similar which is already implemented by someone else? or maybe I'm doing something completely wrong?   I have a master and slave database running on different nodes. The master DB is subjected to huge no. of inserts/updates. The master DB size is close to 6 GB, while the log files are now occupying a space of more than 120 GB. I am running out of disk space and need to get rid of the log files. Will deleting the log files in anyway affect the slave DB ? Presently, the slave is just a couple of seconds behind the master. Is there someplace where I can see what steps I need to follow to delete those files eg. 1)Shut down the slave 2)Shut down the master 3)Delete the log files 4)Start the Master 5)Start the Slave Do I need to inform the slave that the log files have been deleted ?? • Prevent anonymous access to form and application pages in SharePoint 2010

  When you create a Publishing site that has anonymous access enabled, you will notice that anonymous users will not be able to access pages that reside in the “_layouts” virtual directory (e.g. http://siteX/_layouts/viewlsts.aspx). This is because the publishing infrastructure activates a hidden feature that prevents anonymous users from accessing these types of pages. However, if you were to create a site collection based of  Blank Site Template, you would notice that these pages are accessible by anonymous users. The fix is quite simple. There is a hidden feature that you would need to manually activate via stsadm. The feature is called “ViewFormPagesLockDown” (and is available in the Features folders in the 14 hive) To activate it: stsadm -o activatefeature -filename ViewFormPagesLockDown\feature.xml -url http://ServerName Once activated anonymous users will be promoted to enter credentials when they try to access form and application pages.   I'm in the process of writing an eclipse plugin for my programming language Whiley (see http://whiley.org). The plugin is working reasonably well, although there's lots to do. Two pieces of the jigsaw are: I've created a "Whiley Builder" by subclassing incremental project builder. This handles building and cleaning of "*.whiley" files. I've created a content-type called "Whiley Source Files" for "*.whiley" files, which extends "org.eclipse.jdt.core.javaSource" (this follows Andrew Eisenberg suggestion). The advantage of having the content-type extend javaSource is that it immediately fits into the package explorer, etc. In principle, I could fleshout ICompilationUnit to provide more useful info, although I haven't done that yet. The disadvantage is that the Java builder is trying to compile my whiley files ... and it obviously can't. Originally, I had the Java Builder run first, then the Whiley builder. Superficially, this actually worked out quite well since all of the errors from the Java Builder were discarded by the Whiley Builder (for whiley files). However, I actually want the Whiley Builder to run first, as this is the best way for me to resolve dependencies between Java and Whiley files. Which leads me to my question: can I stop the Java builder from trying to compile certain java-like resources? Specifically, in my case, those with the "*.whiley" extension. As an alternative, I was wondering whether my Whiley Builder could somehow update the resource delta to remove those files which it has dealt with. Thoughts?

  As I understand it, in Ubuntu 11.04 setting the AutoHide setting on Compiz Config - Unity (see here) not only hid the launcher but prevented the launcher from influencing window placement. However, since updating to Ubuntu 11.10 when I open a new window it gets indented the space of the launcher. I just want new windows to open flush left. This is annoying, because I like to have two windows on my large screen, one taking up the left half of the screen and the other taking up the right half of the screen. Indenting causes them to overlap. How can I stop Ubuntu 11.10 thinking that the launcher takes up desktop space when placing windows? The following screen shot shows what I'm talking about. I've just opened chromium and the window is indented by the width of the launcher.

  Note: this question is distinct from "How to disable automatically connecting to WiFi?", as I do not wish to disable automatic WiFi connection in general. Problem: The Ubuntu WiFi module connects automatically in priority with WiFi networks without a password, even if there is a already known password-protected WiFi network nearby. Worse, most of the times these "unprotected" networks are in fact hotspots that require authentification from the browser. Example: I am at home, and most of the times my Ubuntu laptop will connect by itself to a nearby hotspot instead of choosing my local ADSL box (password-protected, with a password that is already known by the computer). I then have to select my own WiFi network manually. Is there a way to disable automatic connection to /all/ hotspots ?
