  • How to code UI / HUD in Entity System?

    I think I already got the idea of the Entity System inspired by Adam Martin (t-machine). I want to start using this for my next project. I already know the basic of Entity, Components, and Systems. My problem is how to handle UI / HUD. For example, a quest window, skill window, character info window, etc. How do you handle UI events (eg. pressing a button)? These are stuff that doesn't need to be processed every frame. Currently, I'm using MVC to code UI but I don't think that'll be compatible for Entity System. I've read that Entity System is embedded on a larger OOP. I don't know if UI is outside of ES or not. How do I approach this one?

  • What is the best way to learn how to develop secure applications

    I would like to get into computer security in my career. What are the best ways to learn how to program securely? It seems to me that besides textbooks and taking classes in the subject that perhaps learning how to "hack" would be one of the best ways to learn. My reason for thinking this is the thought that the best way to learn how to prevent someone from doing what you don't want them to is to learn what they're capable of doing. If this is the case, then this poses another question: How would you go about learning to hack in an ethical manner? I definitely don't want to break laws or cause harm in my quest.   • C# Concisely by Judith Bishop &amp; Nigel Horspool

    In my quest to read all the books I have lying on my bookshelf I have finally got round to finishing C# Concisely (ISBN 0-321-15418-5). While this book was fairly old, I found it to be quite useful for a student wanting to learn C# for the first time, and a nice way to review and make I hadn’t missed something when I was learning the language. The book is simple and explains the basic concepts in a clean manner, but is really intended for the beginner programmer – it also had a few chapters dedicated to winforms, which was an indication of its age. None the less, I will keep it on the bookshelf so when I come across someone who is wanting to learn the language I can give them it as a gift.

  • CMS without templates

    I am looking for a CMS where I can layout the page from scratch using HTML/PHP/CSS and simply enter code such as:- FOR EACH (listOfArticles) SORT mostRecent CATEGORY news LIMIT 5 <div class="articleTitle">{title}</div> <div class="arcielBody">{body}</div> END to get a list of the five most recent articles of a certain category in the relevant place. Does such a thing exist anymore? Unless my mind is playing tricks on me, the CMSs of five or ten years ago had this approach. I am thinking of MovableType and the now defunct CityDesk. It seems to me that CMSs these days have a 'templates first' approach. I.E. you must always choose a template before doing anything - which I find really painful. Learning how to design these structured templates also seems overly painful. So can anyone help me in my quest? Thank you, Mark

  • How to program something with the expectation that it will work the first time?

    I had a friend in college who programmed something that worked the first time, that was pretty amazing. But as for me, I just fire up the debugger as soon as I finally get whatever I'm working on to compile - saves me time (kidding of course, I sometimes hold out a little bit of hope or use a lot of premeditated debug strings). What's the best way to approach the Dijkstrain ideal for our programs? -or- Is this just some sort of pie-in-the-sky old fools quest for greatness applicable only to finite tasks that no one should hope for in our professional lives because programming is just too complex?

  • Master Data Management - The Trend Towards Multi-Domain and Other Realities

    In my quest to keep my fingers on the pulse of MDM, I recently found a pretty interesting article.  The article was published in Information Week and provides some interesting statistics from a recent survey conducted by the analyst firm, The Information Difference.  Let's take a look: Of the 130 organizations surveyed, 53% have live operational MDM implementations 81% of those with live operational MDM implementations report broad success - a huge improvement over 2011's 54% 64% developed a business case prior to their MDM deployment, while a daring 32% went ahead without a business case.    The article goes on to talk about the shift in vendors from focusing on customer data and product information management to one that is oriented around multi-domain master data management as well as other realities around MDM.  Take a look at the article.   • Money investments for software developers [closed]

    Let's say you (or your company) have an amount of money that you would like to invest in improving your career, and probably make more money in the long run by landing a better job or raising your productivity. There are some classical investments that anyone would suggest: spend on programming books, since they pay for themselves very quickly; buy a better chair, since you will stay on that all day; attend conferences to improve your network of contacts. I'm looking for more examples to weigh my options in the quest for improvement. Google does not help as it only shows job ads for programmers in the financial sector.

  • StructureMap for Silverlight

I know there are other IOC containers for Silverlight like Unity, Ninject, and a few others, but I particularly like the ease of use with StrutureMap.   • next line character a huge influence on xmlparser?

    I have question about a basic xml file I'm parsing and just putting in simple nextlines(Enters). I'll try to explain my problem with this next example. I'm( still) building an xml tree and all it has to do ( this is a testtree ) is put the summary in an itemlist. I then export it to a plist so I can see if everything is done correctly. A method that does this is in the parser which looks like this if([elementName isEqualToString:@"Book"]) { [appDelegate.books addObject:aBook]; [aBook release]; aBook = nil; } else { [aBook setValue:currentElementValue forKey:elementName]; NSString *directions = [NSString stringWithFormat:currentElementValue]; [directionTree = setObject:directions forKey:@"directions"]; } [currentElementValue release]; currentElementValue = nil; } the export for the plistfile happens at the endtag of books.   • Help finding old sql tool that rewrote queries

    There was this old sql server tool called Lectoneth or something like that, you'd put sql queries in it, and it would rewrite it for you. I think quest bought them out, but I can't find where to download a free copy of that software. Really helps when you have no dba, and have lots of sql queries to rewrite. Thanks Craig

  • What was the single byte change to port WordStar from CP/M to DOS?

    I was re-reading Joel's Strategy Letter II: Chicken and Egg problems and came across this fun quote: In fact, WordStar was ported to DOS by changing one single byte in the code. (Real Programmers can tell you what that byte was, I've long since forgotten). I couldn't find any other references to this with a quick Google search. Is this true or just a figure of speech? In the interest of my quest to become a "Real Programmer", what was the single byte change?

  • How can I move my Dynamic Data folder?

    I accidentally moved my Dynamic Data' folder into myImagesfolder. The project still compiles, but it's just not right. However, when I try to move it back to the root in Visual Studio, I get an error that the destination folder already exists. If I moveDynamic Data` back to the root outside of Visual Studio, the project no longer compiles because the compiler can't find any dynamic data files. My infancy with git prompted me to ask here before embarking on an unpleasant 2am quest.
