  • Do certain corporations hold more weight on a resume?

    Would a developer/tester position at Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc. (any large tech. company of which most people have heard) be more valuable on a resume than working as a developer/tester somewhere where tech. isn't the main objective (shipping company, restaurant chain, insurance company, etc.)? Let's say you have two offers, and you only plan to stay with whichever company for 5 years, before trying to get a better position at a different company. One at Google that has a starting salary of $60,000, and one at some insurance company that has a starting salary of $80,000. I guess what I'm trying to say is... with university's, if someone graduates from MIT or Carnegie Mellon, they can pretty much get a job anywhere. Does someone seem more valuable after having worked at a company like Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc.? In other words, would taking the lower paying job be better in the long run since it's at Google, or would it be better to take the higher paying job at the insurance company?

  • Should I put an app I wrote on my résumé even if it has low ratings?

    Last summer I wrote an iPhone app for the Toronto Film Festival. The development was pretty rushed, and the design goals were changed multiple times. In particular, the central film list view controller was redesigned three times in the week before launch. I forgot to update one of my functions to match the changed design, and the app shipped with a serious bug. While the app was fairly popular, this bug crippled the app and it got a lot of poor reviews. I fixed the bug as soon as I got a crash report, but it got stuck in the iTunes review process for the duration of the film festival. Should I put this app on my résumé? The app has poor ratings and most of the reviews mention crashes, but it's also the only work experience I have. Additionally, how should I approach this topic in an interview?   • ubuntu 12.04 returns to login screen on resume from suspend. Is there a fix?

    When I resume from a suspend, Ubuntu 12.04 will come back ok for about 10 seconds, and then the screen blanks out. After about another second or so, it returns to the login screen for Unity 2d. It normally runs Unity 3d. How can I fix this? I've lost a lot of work from this problem. I sometimes get a error report window asking me to report a Compiz crash after rebooting. I think it may be Compiz or the Xorg server causing the problem. I'm not really sure. Thanks if you can provide help.

  • Listing technologies on a resume for a software position when your background is game programming?

    So I'm thinking about applying for a entry level position in the software industry but my limited experience working and all my notable experience in college is with game technologies. Sure, the languages transfer over well but most of the technologies I have experience with are all related to graphics programming, engines of various types, and such, and do not transfer over at all. I feel like it would be inappropriate to just take my game programming resume and basically replace the word game with software for the reasons mentioned but on the other hand if I take them out I will only have languages and some technologies that I have some small passing experience with- which will obviously not reflect well on me. Should I leave them out or put them in, and if so how can I spin them to be appropriate?

  • Does attending the upcoming Devdays 2011 have some value for a resume?

    This fall I'm 99% going to London to attend the awesome Devdays 2011; I have many reasons to go there and some of them are: Professional stuff Great people Awesome topics Unicorns Passion London :) Obviously all the cool technologies that will be discussed are light years far from my daily work but useful for my side projects and maybe for some future employment. Now, to get to the point; a coworker said to me that he won't come with me because Devday London is expensive, and something expensive should reward you with a certificate, a certificate that could have some value to the eyes on an employer. Is he right? Do you think that attenting to this kind of event have some value on a resume? Should it be highlighted? Does it have any value for a future employer?

  • I'm working on my resume for a job fair this week; any tips? [closed]

    This will change as I update the document, but here is my resume. The job fair I'm going to is really huge (very good chance that it will determine where I intern this summer), so I would definitely appreciate any possible assistance in polishing this up. Any advice possible will be appreciated, ranging from spacing or absurdly minor formatting issues, to rearranging bullet points, to browser incompatibilities, to major changes in anything I've organised or written. At the moment, my only specific question is whether easter eggs are acceptable (specifically, if representatives who understand the reference will generally frown upon my inclusion of "Hacked The Gibson", given the context). Also, if anyone wants to evaluate it (e.g. font size, final arrangement, etc.), here is a PDF snapshot of the document at the time this question was submitted (the final version will have a different file name and appropriate metadata, for the record). I mean, in lan usar A's maximum donload file size is 300 MB , and user B's maximum download file size in 200 MB. I want to block downloading when user try to download more than 300 MB file.User should not allow to download 300MB file at a time. Or how to set quota for maximum download per day, is there possible to do it ? How can i do this ?

  • Android Resume Activity

    In my app, I start an activity and then on button click, display an http url (using Intent - VIEW_ACTION) So when in the middle of the activity, if the user clicks the button called "Google", it opens up google.com in the browser. When I hit the back button, it comes back to my original activity screen. How can I get my activity to resume from where it left of? Thanks George

  • IE8 Download's Writing to C:\?

    Every time I download something using IE8 (running on Win 7) I get asked where to save the file, I choose my downloads folder, then the download continues and when complete I get the following message: "C:\ is not accessible. Access Denied." And I so I can't access any files I download. So why on earth would IE8 be trying to write to the root, and where can I change this?     I know about bittorrent but have never used it since it tends to be mostly used for illegal download of movies and software. Typically whenever I see a legitimate use for it (Linux distros) there is also a regular download option so I haven't had the need for a client until today. There is a large (500Mb) file I want to download that appears to only be accessible via bit torrent. For a one time use, is there an online resource that converts the torrent to a normal http no-special-client-software download? If not, what is an easy to use and light client to install/uninstall on WinXP for a one time use?

  • download/export emails from webmail

    hello, I'm just switching my hosts and I want to move the emails from my accounts too. In order to have my current emails on the new host I want to download/export them and to import at the other host. In order to do this I use one of the webmail (squirrelmail, roundcube, horde) clients available on my current host. The problem is that except for roundcube, I don't see any download/export option available. And in roundcube I can only select one email at a time and download it as eml. My question is how do I export/download all the emails from one account and import them at the new host? I know this is possible because I remember doing this some time ago using squirrelmail, but I can't find anything related to this now. Thank you.

    Both µTorrent and FlashGet are being throttled and I don't know why or how. I use both and they usually report a download speed of 70kbps for torrent speed. FlashGet would report a speed of 70kbps yet actually download at another speed which is about the same as the actual which is a consisten 70kbps. Now, all of a sudden, my torrent downloads are only up to 20kbps. FlashGet still shows a reading of 70kbps, maybe even 80kbps. But, the average actual speed of download is really only 20kbps. I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and no matter where the internet is coming it's the same thing. I have no idea what could be limiting my download rates.

    When I attempt to download this file, sometimes it only downloads about 700KB (the file is 40MB) then I get the message that the download is complete. If I try to download the file again, it works properly. The problem seems prevalent in IE, although I've had it happen in Chrome sometimes too. I have the following code: <input type="button" value="Agree to Terms and Download" onClick="location.href='/downloads/setup.exe';" /> If it matters, this is over a secure connection. I also tried zipping the file, and had the same issues.

  • Blank screen after Switch User or Resume

    About half the time when I switch users or resume from standby or resume the screen goes blank (black). If I work the cursor keys I can hear the system bell when it gets to the end of the user list. I can also successfully login, going from memory, but screen stays black. Sometimes closing and re-opening the lid will light up the screen again. Pressing the special Function key to enable/disable external monitor connection has no effect [Fn]-[F5],[Fn]-[F6]. If none of the previous work I need to put the computer into hibernation or full power off to restore screen function. If I watch closely when switching users I think I can see the screen initially start to light up and then quickly fade to black. The computer is an Acer Aspire 3500, model ZL6, running Ubuntu 10.10 installed 2 days ago. No proprietary drivers are in use. I'll provide a list of hardware details as soon as I can figure out how to generate that (didn't there used to be an entry for hardware details under the System menu?). Possibly related questions: No resume after Hibernate or Standby When I resume from suspension - the screen is blank Switch user fails to complete successfully For what it's worth, blank after resume also used to happen occasionally when the laptop was running XP-Home, but nowhere near as often, perhaps 6 or 8 times a year. UPDATE: I found System Administration System Testing and ran the Monitor test. It went very very dark, but the window elements could be discerned, and the whole screen flashed (from very very dark to black). On the third repeat of that same test the screen went to full blaupck and stayed there. Moving the mouse, via touchpad, or touch keys did not wake it up again. I had to close the lid and put the computer into hibernate, and press the power button to restore it.   • Should I expect to know a lot about every language I put on my resume as a college student?

    If I am asked to program an algorithm, say binary search, in languages other than Java during an interview, I will have a hard time trying to remember the syntax. Is it okay to tell my interviewer that I can only code this in Java, because I have worked with other languages before but have not used them for a while? If not, what suggestions do you have (i.e. what languages and parts of those languages among these should I pick up the syntax of before my interview)?
