  • Stumbling Through: Visual Studio 2010 (Part II)

    I would now like to expand a little on what I stumbled through in part I of my Visual Studio 2010 post and touch on a few other features of VS 2010.  Specifically, I want to generate some code based off of an Entity Framework model and tie it up to an actual data source.  Im not going to take the easy way and tie to a SQL Server data source, though, I will tie it to an XML data file instead.  Why?  Well, why not?  This is purely for learning, there are probably much better ways to get strongly-typed classes around XML but it will force us to go down a path less travelled and maybe learn a few things along the way.  Once we get this XML data and the means to interact with it, I will revisit data binding to this data in a WPF form and see if I cant get reading, adding, deleting, and updating working smoothly with minimal code.  To begin, I will use what was learned in the first part of this blog topic and draw out a data model for the MFL (My Football League) - I dont want the NFL to come down and sue me for using their name in this totally football-related article.  The data model looks as follows, with Teams having Players, and Players having a position and statistics for each season they played: Note that when making the associations between these entities, I was given the option to create the foreign key but I only chose to select this option for the association between Player and Position.  The reason for this is that I am picturing the XML that will contain this data to look somewhat like this: <MFL> <Position/> <Position/> <Position/> <Team>     <Player>         <Statistic/>     </Player> </Team> </MFL> Statistic will be under its associated Player node, and Player will be under its associated Team node no need to have an Id to reference it if we know it will always fall under its parent.  Position, however, is more of a lookup value that will not have any hierarchical relationship to the player.  In fact, the Position data itself may be in a completely different xml file (something Id like to play around with), so in any case, a player will need to reference the position by its Id. So now that we have a simple data model laid out, I would like to generate two things based on it:  A class for each entity with properties corresponding to each entity property An IO class with methods to get data for each entity, either all instances, by Id or by parent. Now my experience with code generation in the past has consisted of writing up little apps that use the code dom directly to regenerate code on demand (or using tools like CodeSmith).  Surely, there has got to be a more fun way to do this given that we are using the Entity Framework which already has built-in code generation for SQL Server support.  Lets start with that built-in stuff to give us a base to work off of.  Right click anywhere in the canvas of our model and select Add Code Generation Item: So just adding that code item seemed to do quite a bit towards what I was intending: It apparently generated a class for each entity, but also a whole ton more.  I mean a TON more.  Way too much complicated code was generated now that code is likely to be a black box anyway so it shouldnt matter, but we need to understand how to make this work the way we want it to work, so lets get ready to do some stumbling through that text template (tt) file. When I open the .tt file that was generated, right off the bat I realize there is going to be trouble there is no color coding, no intellisense no nothing!  That is going to make stumbling through more like groping blindly in the dark while handcuffed and hopping on one foot, which was one of the alternate titles I was considering for this blog.  Thankfully, the community comes to my rescue and I wont have to cast my mind back to the glory days of coding in VI (look it up, kids).  Using the Extension Manager (Available under the Tools menu), I did a quick search for tt editor in the Online Gallery and quickly found the Tangible T4 Editor: Downloading and installing this was a breeze, and after doing so I got some color coding and intellisense while editing the tt files.  If you will be doing any customizing of tt files, I highly recommend installing this extension.  Next, well see if that is enough help for us to tweak that tt file to do the kind of code generation that we wantDid you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   • [LINQ] Master &ndash; Detail Same Record(II)

    In my previous post, I introduced my problem, but I didn’t explain the problem with Entity Framework When you try the solution indicated you will take the following error: LINQ to Entities don’t recognize the method 'System.String Join(System.String, System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[System.String])’ of the method, and this method can’t be translated into a stored expression. The query that produces that error was: 1: var consulta = (from TCabecera cab in 2: contexto_local.TCabecera 3: let Detalle = (from TDetalle detalle 4: in cab.TDetalle 5: select detalle.Nombre) 6: let Nombres = string.Join(",",Detalle ) 7: select new 8: { 9: cab.Campo1, 10: cab.Campo2, 11: Nombres 12: }).ToList(); 13: grid.DataSource=consulta;   Why is this error happening? This error happens when the query couldn’t be translated into T-SQL. Solutions?     Thanks to the implicit casting in compound assignments and increment/decrement operators, the following compiles: byte b = 0; ++b; b++; --b; b--; b += b -= b *= b /= b %= b; b <<= b >>= b >>>= b; b |= b &= b ^= b; And thanks to auto-boxing and auto-unboxing, the following also compiles: Integer ii = 0; ++ii; ii++; --ii; ii--; ii += ii -= ii *= ii /= ii %= ii; ii <<= ii >>= ii >>>= ii; ii |= ii &= ii ^= ii; And yet, the last line in the following snippet gives compile-time error: Byte bb = 0; ++bb; bb++; --bb; bb--; // ... okay so far! bb += bb; // DOESN'T COMPILE!!! // "The operator += is undefined for the argument type(s) Byte, byte" Can anyone help me figure out what's going on here? The byte b version compiles just fine, so shouldn't Byte bb just follow suit and do the appropriate boxing and unboxing as necessary to accommodate?

    I would like to pass a parameter defined in the XAML (View) of my application to the ViewModel class by using the RelayCommand. I followed Josh Smith's excellent article on MVVM and have implemented the following. This seems obvious as the method CommandWithAParameter is being called with the literal String "Apple". However, looking up the execution stack, I can see that "Orange", the CommandParameter I set in the XAML is the parameter value for RelayCommand implemenation of the ICommand Execute interface method. That is the value of parameter in the method below of the execution stack is "Orange", public void Execute(object parameter) { _execute(parameter); } What I am trying to figure out is how to create the RelayCommand ACommandWithAParameter property such that it can call the CommandWithAParameter method with the CommandParameter "Orange" defined in the XAML. Is there a way to do this? Why do I want to do this? Part of "On The Fly Localization" In my particular implementation I want to create a SetLanguage RelayCommand that can be bound to multiple buttons. I would like to pass the two character language identifier ("en", "es", "ja", etc) as the CommandParameter and have that be defined for each "set language" button defined in the XAML. I want to avoid having to create a SetLanguageToXXX command for each language supporting and hard coding the two character language identifier into each RelayCommand in the ViewModel.

  • Dolby Digital Live (DDL) on Asus Rampage II Gene (Creative X-Fi Extreme)

    Hi there, I have an Asus Rampage II Gene motherboard which has X-Fi extreme built in. I can get it to work with Windows 7 ok using the Creative drivers, however when I try and install the DDL/DTS add on pack from Creative I get the error message: "There are no supported audio device available. You need to close the application. Click OK to close the application now" I don't understand it because I have the Creative software installed ok and supporting the sound without any problems. In Device manager the audio device comes up as 'High definition audio device' and uses driver: 6.1.7600.16385 from Microsoft. I tried using the Creative drivers which show up as 'soundmax HD audio' however these do not allow any of the Creative products to run properly. Please can anyone offer any help? Or even just confirm that DDL can work with my onboard sound? Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit 6GB DDR3 XFX GS8800 384mb Asus Rampage II Gene Intel i7 920 (2.66)

  • AMD Phenom II X4 965 crossfire motherboard

    I am trying to build a cheap mining rig. I wanted to use the AMD Phenom II X4 965 (HDZ965FBGMBOX) processor as it got very good reviews and benchmarks, and is inexpensive. However, I am having trouble finding motherboards with crossfire support for 2 GPUs. AMD's website only lists five compatible motherboards, of which only one has crossfire support. Worse, it is expensive and seems to be obsolete and no longer available. I have trouble believing that there are only five compatible motherboards for that CPU. Are there any low-end motherboards that are both compatible with the AMD Phenom II X4 965 and have CrossFire support? (Is there a way to find this sort of information, like a central site that lists motherboards and their technical specifications?)

  • Unable to boot from SATA II and vista

    Trying to use a SATA II hard drive on toshiba satellite notebook. The hard drive has vista installed on it from another notebook. After inserting the hard drive, the boot starts.. shows "Microsoft windows" the progress bar, and reboots, in a loop. The existing hard drive is SATA with xp on it. The replacement one is SATA II with vista on it. I wanna troubleshoot. But, don't know where to start. Any help is much appreciated!!

    I've written a matlab program for standard backpropagation algorithm, it is my homework and I should not use matlab toolbox, so I write the entire code by myself. This link helped me for backpropagation algorithm. I have a data set of 40 random number and initial weights randomly. As output, I want to see a diagram that shows the performance. I used mse and plot function to see performance for 20 epochs but the result is this: I heard that performance should go up through backpropagation, so I want to know is there any problem with my code or this result is normal because local minimums.     hello guys, i ve got a problem with my programm. here is the link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2734432/TabbedInterface.7z once u have opened both tabs, u ll start loosing the references to other collections of the current item in the view. that is because these ids are nullable and once you switch over to the other tab they ll become null. my question is why and how can i corrent that behavoir? if you change the int? to int there are no more problem, but i need them to be nullable!

    Hi there, I'm trying to get a local LAMP setup on my Ubuntu desktop. I'm successfully got PHP install but I'm having trouble with MySQL If PHP tries to connet to MySQL I get this error: Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) in /var/www/testing.php on line 3 Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) If I try via command line I get much the same error: owen@desktop:~$ mysql ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (13) Weirdly "/var/run/mysqld" does not exist.
