  • google video chat works faster on local LAN

    Recently the internet speed on our college LAN has dropped drastically. ( Avg file download speed 13 Kbps :( ). However g-talk's video chat remains unbelievably fluent when done with someone within the college's LAN. However video chat is practically impossible for anyone else who is not in the college network. My college has a proxy server through which all computers inside the college connect to the internet. I suspect its due to the proxy server. Also how g-talk maintains video chat? Is it something in the mechanism that speeds up video chat between two clients with the same IP? Since all computers use the same proxy,their IP would appear to be the same to google server.

  • Can't find a wireless access point's IP address after changing router IP/LAN settings

    I have a modem/router, Netgear DG834, and a wireless access point (AP), Netgear WG602. The AP is directly connected to the router. My old working configuration was: Router IP address : 192.168.0.1 Access point IP address: 192.168.0.10 My new configuration is: Router IP address : 192.168.1.1 Access point IP address: ???.???.???.??? I changed my router's IP address/LAN settings to set up a VPN with another Netgear router that had the same LAN configuration. The wireless network is still up and perfectly working, but I can't find the AP's IP address. I've tried broadcast ping but the AP won't respond. I looked at the router "attached devices", but it's not there. I've played around with Nmap and arp request but the AP is totally invisible. I can fix it by resetting it to factory settings, but I'm very interested in learning more about this problem. I'm also interested in network security and this fact of having an invisible AP well, it's something I'd like to understand.

  • D-Link router WiFi and LAN segment

    I have D-Link 2650 router. Some wireless and wired clients connected to it. The problem is there is no interconnection between wireless and wired devices. For instance, when I start webserver on PC connected to wired LAN, WiFi devices cannot access it (other wired devices can). However all devices are in the same subnet: 192.168.1.x. How can I connect WiFi and LAN devices to one network? Or maybe what I should know first (any information with which I can proceed)?

  • How does cross domain authentication work in a firewalled environment?

    This is a simplification and the names have been changed to protect the innocent. The assets: Active Directory Domains corp.lan saas.lan User accounts user01@corp.lan user02@corp.lan Servers dc.corp.lan (domain controller) dc.saas.lan (domain controller) server.saas.lan A one way trust exists between the domains so user accounts in corp.lan and log into servers in saas.lan No firewall between dc.corp.lan and dc.saas.lan server.saas.lan is in a firewalled zone and a set of rules exist so it can talk to dc.saas.lan I can log into server.saas.lan with user01@corp.lan - But I don't understand how it works. If I watch firewall logs, I see a bunch of login chatter between server.saas.lan and dc.saas.lan I also see a bunch of DROPPED chatter between server.saas.lan and dc.corp.lan. Presumably, this is because server.saas.lan is trying to authenticate user01@corp.lan But no firewall rule exists that allows communication between these hosts. However, user01@corp.lan can log in successfully to server.saas.lan - Once logged in, I can "echo %logonserver%" and get \dc.corp.lan. So.... I am a little confused how the account actually gets authenticated. Does dc.saas.lan eventually talk to dc.corp.lan after server.saas.lan can't talk to dc.corp.lan? Just trying to figure out what needs to be changed/fixed/altered.

  • DD-WRT No Internet connection over LAN

    I flashed the DD-WRT firmware on my TP-Link WR1043ND router and although after cloning the PC's MAC-Address it gets the correct IP from my ISP, the internet connection over LAN just won't work. The strange thing is it does work flawlessly over W-LAN, which tells me the problem should lie somehow in the default LAN settings or the PC. Any idea what the problem might be?     We are using Cables Unlimited USB-2925 USB-to-Dual-DB9 serial cables, which use the Moschip MCS7720 controller. We have downloaded the newest driver from http://www.moschip.com/mcs7720.php, but that driver was last updated in 2005. It does not seem to be working with Macs running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Does anyone know of any updates for this driver, or are there any ways to get the driver to work with Snow Leopard?

  • How to send from my Z88 to my PC

    I've got a Cambridge Z88 that I want to get working with my PC. Around 6 years ago - in 2004 - I made heavy use of my Z88 to do a whole bunch of writing on the train while commuting to and from work. The Z88 is solid state, lightweight and has a full size silent keyboard, so it works very well as a writing instrument. I still have the serial cable I soldered up back then and used successfully in 2004. It has these connections: Z88 9 pin ----- ------- 2 TxD ------> RxD 2 3 RxD <------ TxD 3 7 GND <-----> GND 5 4 RTS ------> CTS 8 5 CTS <-+ RTS 7 8 DCD <-+---- DTR 4 9 DTR ----+-> DCD 1 +-> DSR 6 Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find my notes from 2004 that describe how I got it to work back then. I've spent several hours trying to Google a result, but to no avail. I'm pretty sure the cable is fine - after all, it's what I used successfully six years ago, and I've checked it out with a multimeter - so I'm focusing on the PC end of things, which is where I'd like some assistance. Q1: In my recent attempts, I've been using both Hyperterminal (as built into Windows XP) and the command line (copy com2: con:), but with no success. What's a good (better!) serial communications application to use? Is there one that allows me to see as deep as the signalling that's occurring on the wire? Q2: If you have a Z88 that works correctly with your PC, what software do you use on the PC end, and what's the pinout of your cable? I'm pretty sure that the Z88 itself is working properly: When using the built in Import/Export tool to send a file, I see different behaviour when my serial cable is connected compared to disconnected. When disconnected, the transmission appears to work, with a progress meter counting up and then finishing; when connected, nothing happens 'cept a timeout if I wait long enough.

  • How can I listen to multiple Serial Ports asynchronously in C#

    I have an application that listens to a piece of hardware on a USB to Serial converter. My application should monitor more than one serial port at the same time. I loop the serial ports I need to listen to, and create a thread for each port. In the thread I have my data handing routine. When I assign one port, it runs flawlessly. When I listen to the other one, it also works. When I open both ports however, the second port always throws an UnauthorizedAccessException when calling serialPort.Open(). It does not matter in what order I open the ports, the second one always fails. I listen to the ports using serialPort.ReadLine() in a while loop. Can .NET open more than one port at the same time? Can I listen to both? Or should I use another (thread safe?) way to access my serial port events?

    Hi, all Currently I am doing a project involves a bluetooth communication setup between a PDA and a small embedded device. This small embedded device can only be communicated with a virtual serial port over a bluetooth link. The PDA is the ipaq running with windows mobile 6, and I am using c#. I had done a program which can communication with the serial port over bluetooth. But the only issue is every time I run this program, I have to active the bluetooth radio, and manually pairing this device with the pda via the bluetooth manager. What I want to do is when running this program, it can establish the bluetooth connection between the pda and the embedded module. So I am using functions from the 32feet prject. This is one issue is I cant make the virutal serial port part, as I think the 32feet project can only make virual serial ports for the window bluetooth stack but not the widcomm bluetooth stact, which the ipaq is using. Therefore, are there any existing c# classes or stacks that can make virtual serial port under widcomm for windows mobile 6. Thanks

    I would like to search files in my lan easily. (over 500k files on SMB shares, it would take ages with other ways) I mean, i just need to do a quick search on file names, i don't care content indexing at all, as most of my files are in a proprietary format, and the file name is explicative enough. But, date range filters are a must for me. I just need a quick search like voidtools' everything can do, but in a network way The files are on a WHS box (lol, Videos and Music share names are not appropriate for a company, but a license for that win2003-based os is cheaper than an xp home one!) I tried: Lansearch pro: it is not good for me, as i need a quick index Network Search Engine: it would be perfect, but does not offer a date range filter Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express, but it is horrible! First, does NOT index filenames, and then, my Core2Duo is not powerful enough to run it smoothly. Google Desktop with a proxy on localhost to make it run on the lan, but i don't like the hacked result. The preinstalled Windows Search 4.0 but it sucks totally in choosing the relevance of data - uninstalled Docco... what's that? I am considering to try: Ibm omnifind DocFetcher (can it work as a client? did not investigated yet) Strigi (it looks like that it can work as a client, right?) Any ideas/suggestions?

Reading and writing operations are performed with standard select()/read() loop and write(), and there is probably nothing wrong in them, but initialization code (or absence of some part of it) damages something in the tty subsystem. With or without this termios initialization, strange things happen in system after the application exits. Sometimes plain cat (or hd) exits immediately printing nothing or same stuff each time, sometimes it is waiting and not displaying any of the data that is surely sent onto the port; and close() (read() too, but not every time) emits a strange WARNING to dmesg referring to usb-serial.c. I checked the hardware and firmware tens of times (even on different machines) and I am sure it is working as intended; moreover, I stripped the firmware to just print same message over and over. How can I use serial port without destroying anything? Thanks.

  • Broad Band LAN connection through existing 6 wire phone line ( no phone connected )

    I have an (up to but never achieved ) 10 mb broadband signal coming into my house along the telephone line. The modem then connects the broadband signal via a LAN connection and Wi-Fi signal to my computers and iPad. My workshop desk is 54 yards (approx. 50m) downhill from the modem (part of a separate building) – too far to give a good direct signal. The inside corner of the workshop (by a window) receives a weak signal. I have a disconnected telephone cable consisting of 6 wires going from the house to the workshop. The telephone is no longer used in the workshop - we use our mobile number for business calls. A broad band signal using the cable would not have to share with a phone. What would be the most economic price/efficient way to get the broadband signal to the workshop? I am writing in hope that since the telephone didn't need the six wires, an Ethernet connection might be similar and not need all the eight wires for a LAN connection. In theory could use the telephone wire to pull an Ethernet cable trough the underground pipe but I doubt if the cable would survive the strain. The broad band connection in the workshop does not have to have network facility. My skill level is high enough to do house wiring, plumbing and gas fitting; so given any sound advice and a wiring diagram or instructions I can probably work out the rest myself.

    USB serial ports, especially devices which emulate serial ports, don't quite behave the same as old serial ports, which causes a few problems with some software. old serial ports, always existed, they never come and go out of existence. With USB devices that emulate serial ports, they come and go depending on whether they are powered / reset etc. Is there a way under windows to make the USB serial port permanently exist regardless of the presence of the device? (not just come back as the same name as it was before).

  • Help accessing Beagle over serial with Minicom/GTKTerm

    I am trying to access a brand new Beagle Board from Ubuntu or Mac over serial using the setup seen here: http://specialcomp.com/beagleboard/RevC1.htm I got Minicom and GTKTerm installed on the Ubuntu box. I set up the correct baud rate, turned off flow control, and have tried ttyUSB0 and ttyS0. Once minicom is configured properly, I should just see the init text from the board appear if I have minicom open in terminal while I plug in the board, correct? dmesg shows ttyUSB0 on the computer has been connected to ttyS0 on the beagle.
