  • Purpose of LAN Domain?

    - by Leonard Thieu
What is the purpose of creating a domain name for your LAN? I'm using DD-WRT on my router and assigned local.moofz.com as the LAN domain. I setup Apache HTTP servers on two of the computers on my LAN to test it out. I could reach them on oneil.local.moofz.com and vala.local.moofz.com, but I found out that I could also reach them via their hostnames oneil and vala. If I can reach them through their host names, then what would be the purpose of having a domain name for my LAN?

  • Windows file sharing connects over WiFi instead of LAN

    - by zacaj
I have a laptop and a desktop computer, and I need to sync lots of files to the laptop and back whenever I go on a trip, etc. I've got a LAN cable connected into an extra port on the desktop that I plug into the laptop so I can get gigabit file transfers instead of wireless G. They connect fine. If I do an FTP transfer, for instance, using the LAN IP addresses, it goes at ~40MB/s, as it should. However when I copy files using explorer and native windows file sharing it detects the other computer by name, not IP (eg \\DESKTOP-PC\ instead of \\192.168.0.100\) and always connects to it by its wireless IP address instead of the faster LAN address. Both computers are running Windows 7. I have tried editing the priorities of the adapters in Advanced Settings and putting the LAN adapters above the wifi ones, but this didn't have any effect

  • Can't communicate between lan ports on openwrt router

    - by ScaryAardvark
I've got a WBMR-HP-G300H Buffalo Airstation router on which I've installed the lates OpenWRT software. All is working well (ADSL, WIFI etc) except for one niggle. I can't communicate between lan ports. i.e. if I have one computer connected on lan port 1 and I try to ping another computer on lan port 2 then I get "destination unreachable". I can ping both computers from the router itself and can also ping each computer from a seperate laptop connected wirelessly. All computers are in the same subnet range (10.0.0.?/24). I suspect that I may need to configure a vlan on the switch but everytime I try and do this with various google'ed configuration I keep freezing out all lan-ports and I have to revert back using a wirelessly connected laptop. Here's my /etc/config/network: config interface 'loopback' option ifname 'lo' option proto 'static' option ipaddr '127.0.0.1' option netmask '255.0.0.0' config interface 'lan' option type 'bridge' option proto 'static' option netmask '255.255.255.0' option ipaddr '10.0.0.1' option _orig_ifname 'eth0 wlan0' option _orig_bridge 'true' option ifname 'eth0' config adsl-device 'adsl' option fwannex 'a' option annex 'a2p' config interface 'wan' option _orig_ifname 'nas0' option _orig_bridge 'false' option proto 'pppoa' option encaps 'vc' option atmdev '0' option vci '38' option vpi '0' option username '?????????????' option password '??????????????' • Microsoft products such as Visual Studio 2010 does not require to enter serial number

    - by MainMa
Hi, I am member of WebsiteSpark and was member of DreamSpark. Both programs enable to download software and provide serial keys to use. Some software like Windows Server has an ISO file to download and a serial number displayed on the website which I must enter during installation. Some other software does not have any serial key. For example, when I downloaded Visual Studio 2010, there was just a link to an ISO file. During installation, there was no such a field as serial number (whereas Visual Studio 2008 had this field at the beginning of installation process). There is the same thing with SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft Expression Studio 3. Even when I've downloaded the public trial RTM version of Windows Seven Enterprise, there were no serial number to enter. I don't think that such expensive products as SQL Server 2008 Enterprise are delivered without serials and online validation, so I suppose that the serial is embedded into the product itself, either in installation binaries or in a separate config file, so is already in the ISO I download so I do not have to enter it. So my question is, how it is done technically? Is each 2 GBs ISO generated on-demand on the server to embed a serial each time this ISO is requested? I suppose that if it is done, it has a huge impact on servers performance (no caching, no streaming...), so what may be the techniques used behind? I want to implement the same feature in a product I intend to ship (to simplify installation by avoiding to ask to enter serial number), but I really don't see how to do it with low impact on server performance.

  • How do I turn off WLAN automatically when LAN is connected?

    - by derroman
I use my Thinkpad laptop with a docking station. The docking station is connected to my router via LAN. When I walk around the house I use my laptop with WLAN. Is it possible (and how) to manage these devices with a script or something to work like this: If a LAN-Connection is up, the OS should turn off Wifi and if LAN-Connection gets lost (undocking) Wifi should turn on automatically. I use Ubuntu 11.04 64bit with Gnome 2. The system works on an Lenovo ThinkPad R500 with. • Virtualbox and Serial Port permissions

    - by Pandincus
I have a Windows XP Pro SP3 host machine running a Windows XP Pro SP3 guest machine. The host machine has one serial port, COM1, that I need to use in the guest machine. When I add the serial port to the guest machine and try to start it, I get the following error: Failed to start the virtual machine xxx Cannot open host device 'COM1' for read/write access. Check the permissions of that device (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED). Unknown error creating VM (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED). What are some of the things that might be causing this problem? How can I check "permissions" on a serial port?

  • VirtualBox serial port, limit of two?

    - by Evan Carroll
Using VirtualBox, Is there a limit of two serial ports per VM? I'm currently engaging in a task that requires more than two, but less than or equal to four ports. I'm at a loss of what to do to get COM3 and COM4 up? How do I do it if the Virtual Box GUI doesn't currently support more than two serial host devices? Can I configure them external to the GUI? Is there a hard-cap on two devices? And, if so, for the love of god, please entertain me with the reasoning? I know Windows and Linux don't impose such a limit, it would seem awkward to impose it in virtualization layer. This is for cheap dial-in project with proprietary Windows tools. I'm using a Quatech serial multiport adapter to provide the ports to multimodems.

  • Get HDD (and NOT Volume) Serial Number on Vista Ultimate 64 bit

    - by TheAgent
Hi all. I was once looking for getting the HDD serial number without using WMI, and I found it. The code I found and posted on StackOverFlow.com works very well on 32 bit Windows, both XP and Vista. The trouble only begins when I try to get the serail number on 64 bit OSs (Vista Ultimate 64, specifically). The code returns String.Empty, or a Space all the time. Anyone got an idea how to fix this? EDIT: I used the tools Dave Cluderay suggested, with interesting results: Here is the output from DiskId32, on Windows XP SP2 32-bit: To get all details use "diskid32 /d" Trying to read the drive IDs using physical access with admin rights Drive 0 - Primary Controller - - Master drive Drive Model Number________________: [MAXTOR STM3160215AS] Drive Serial Number_______________: [ 6RA26XK3] Drive Controller Revision Number__: [3.AAD] Controller Buffer Size on Drive___: 2097152 bytes Drive Type________________________: Fixed Drive Size________________________: 160041885696 bytes Trying to read the drive IDs using the SCSI back door Drive 4 - Tertiary Controller - - Master drive Drive Model Number________________: [MAXTOR STM3160215AS] Drive Serial Number_______________: [ 6RA26XK3] Drive Controller Revision Number__: [3.AAD] Controller Buffer Size on Drive___: 2097152 bytes Drive Type________________________: Fixed Drive Size________________________: 160041885696 bytes Trying to read the drive IDs using physical access with zero rights **** STORAGE_DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR for drive 0 **** Vendor Id = [] Product Id = [MAXTOR STM3160215AS] Product Revision = [3.AAD] Serial Number = [] **** DISK_GEOMETRY_EX for drive 0 **** Disk is fixed DiskSize = 160041885696 Trying to read the drive IDs using Smart Drive 0 - Primary Controller - - Master drive Drive Model Number________________: [MAXTOR STM3160215AS] Drive Serial Number_______________: [ 6RA26XK3] Drive Controller Revision Number__: [3.AAD] Controller Buffer Size on Drive___: 2097152 bytes Drive Type________________________: Fixed Drive Size________________________: 160041885696 bytes Hard Drive Serial Number__________: 6RA26XK3 Hard Drive Model Number___________: MAXTOR STM3160215AS And DiskId32 run on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit: To get all details use "diskid32 /d" Trying to read the drive IDs using physical access with admin rights Trying to read the drive IDs using the SCSI back door Trying to read the drive IDs using physical access with zero rights **** STORAGE_DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR for drive 0 **** Vendor Id = [MAXTOR S] Product Id = [TM3160215AS] Product Revision = [3.AA] Serial Number = [] **** DISK_GEOMETRY_EX for drive 0 **** Disk is fixed DiskSize = 160041885696 Trying to read the drive IDs using Smart Hard Drive Serial Number__________: Hard Drive Model Number___________: Notice how much lesser the information is on Vista, and how the Serial Number is not returned. • cannot read but can write on serial port through Android Emulator

    - by Aad
I am working on a program that is communicating with serial port over USB through Android emulator. emulator -qemu -serial /dev/ttyUSB0 The emulator is able to open the port and write into it. However, read is not happening. The program has a timeout for read maintained by a timer. The read happens in a separate 'read' thread. The main thread has a socketpair fd pair to signal the read-thread that the serial port is closed post timeout. In the read-thread, polling happens(poll() function call) over the 2 file-descriptors: one is serial port fd, the other is one of the socketpair. The board that I have connected to works fine with sending commands over 'cutecom' The poll never succeeds for serial port. However, poll succeeds for 'socketpair'ed fd and the thread ends on a close-signal sent from main-thread post timeout. Ouestions: Are there any special settings for read as even loop-back fails Are there differences between settings for read and write on a serial port?

  • Sharing a serial port between two processes

    - by peterrus
As it is not possible to directly share a serial port between two processes using Linux, I am looking for another way to achieve this, I have heard about socat but could not find a concrete example of how to realize the following: Split one physical serial port (/dev/ttyUSB0) into two virtual ports, one for reading and one for writing, as one process only needs to send data, and one only needs to receive data. I can no modify the sending application unfortunately.

  • Routing WIFI and LAN for specific traffic

    - by jakebird451
I have two network devices aboard my macbook pro: WIFI (en1): Used for general traffic. Connects to an ip of 192.168.19.* via DHCP LAN (en0): Used for specific traffic. Connects to an ip of 192.168.2.10 as a static IP. Does not connect to a router, only a switch for direct routing connection. I have 4 IP addresses I need to access on the LAN: 192.168.2.1 192.168.2.21 192.168.2.20 192.168.2.30 The rest of the traffic needs to go to WIFI. I have tried setting up a routing table for the specific ip addresses, but I only managed to mess up my network. I do not venture out into the world of networking too often, but this was the latest command I have been trying: sudo route add -host 192.168.2.30 -interface en0 This command killed my ability to use ping. It told me that ping could not allocate memory (is that even possible)? It also killed my wifi access. Logging out and back in fixed the issue. I really do not mind to make this solution permanent, so I am fine with a temporary routing. EDIT: If I currently have been trying: sudo route flush sudo route add default 192.168.19.1 This gets everything to work for about a minute. But after such minute it "forgets" the routing to WiFi while retaining LAN's (en0) routing. If I unplug and replug my LAN (en0) cable, the process works for another minute.

  • can't ssh within LAN, but can connect from outside

    - by Patrick B.
A strange issue: I have a desktop running Ubuntu 10.04 behind a Netgear WNR1000 router performing NAT. I would like to be able to ssh into the desktop from my laptop (running Windows 7 and Cygwin). When at home, both the desktop and the laptop are connected by wireless (the desktop is in a different room from the router). sshd seems to be running fine, since ssh localhost from the desktop works without trouble. Also, ssh my.ip.address from my laptop when it is not behind the router works fine (I am forwarding port 22 on the router to my desktop). However, ssh same.ip.address from within the LAN fails with "Connection refused". ssh 192.168.local.ip.address fails with a different message, "Connection timed out". I can connect if I first ssh to a machine outside the LAN. So far I haven't found anything with Google because with the search terms that seem like they would be relevant, the vast majority of people have the opposite problem - i.e., they can't connect from outside the LAN but can connect within it. I can port forward through a remote server when I'm at home, but this seems like a totally absurd way to connect two computers on the same home LAN. I have already tried stopping and starting sshd on the desktop. Any thoughts?

  • Raspberry Pi broadcast serial port data to local network

    - by D051P0
I didn't find anything to help me with this problem. What I want is: Serial device sends repeatedly some data to serial port. Raspberry Pi should get this data from RxD and stream it to local network via port 10001 without filtering it. So I can find this device on my pc. This should also work in other direction: Raspberry listen to port 10001 and forward all data from local network to TxD. I'm newbie in Linux World. How can I listen to some port on Raspberry Pi and send broadcast to the same port? I'm using Raspbian Wheezy with soft float. I have found a library Pi4j for Java, that I already use to get and write data from/to serial port. final Serial serial = SerialFactory.createInstance(); serial.addListener(new SerialDataListener() { public void dataReceived(SerialDataEvent event) { forward(event.getData()); } }); event.getData() is a String, which I want to broadcast in my local network. Is it generally a good Idea to use Java for that? I need also a String from port 10001, which I can forward to serial port.

  • Intel D510MO board - 1000Mbit LAN or not?

    - by T.J. Crowder
The Intel forum seems to be down (signing in fails with connection refused), but perhaps someone here knows the answer. The Intel D510MO product page says that the LAN is 10/100/1000, but when I look at the NM10 chipset it uses, it says it's just 10/100 (and the detailed PDF spec here backs that up pretty definitively). I don't immediately see anything saying the D510MO has a different LAN controller than the NM10's onboard one, and it would seem odd if it did given the purpose of the board (low power, small footprint; integrated). Does this board support 1000Mbit LAN or not? Anyone have direct knowledge of it? Thanks in advance.

  • Should a webserver in the DMZ be allowed to access MSSQL in the LAN?

    - by Allen
This should be a very basic question and I tried to research it and couldn't find a solid answer. Say you have a web server in the DMZ and a MSSQL server in the LAN. IMO, and what I've always assumed to be correct, is that the web server in the DMZ should be able to access the MSSQL server in the LAN (maybe you'd have to open a port in the firewall, that'd be ok IMO). Our networking guys are now telling us that we can't have any access to the MSSQL server in the LAN from the DMZ. They say that anything in the DMZ should only be accessible FROM the LAN (and web), and that the DMZ should not have access TO the LAN, just as the web does not have access to the LAN. So my question is, who is right? Should the DMZ have access to/from the LAN? Or, should access to the LAN from the DMZ be strictly forbidden. All this assumes a typical DMZ configuration.

  • Proxying MMS Stream on a LAN

    - by Matthew Iselin
A variety of users on our LAN would like to listen to an MMS stream, and in the interest of conserving bandwidth (and because our WAN connection is not fast at all) I was wondering if it was possible to set up a service which proxies the stream from the WAN and provides it to LAN computers, thus only downloading the stream once and then distributing it to clients. Any ideas? I have a Linux box serving as our LAN-WAN router, so it'd be ideal if something could sit on it and proxy the stream, but I also have Linux and Windows workstations. A free solution would be preferred.

  • Wake on Lan/Wan won't work after some time has passsed

    - by Vian Esterhuizen
I have the following set up: Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Wake On Lan Enabled Asus N66U Port Forwarding Static IP assigned to my computer Windows 7 Advanced Power Management - PCI Express - Off Intel 82579V - All options under Power Management checked I'm trying to set this up for Wake on Wan capabilities. If I shut down my computer and immediately try to Wake on Wan (and Lan) it works and starts up. While the computer is on, I've used a few WOL specific packet sniffers and the packet comes through on the correct port. After any period of time over a few minutes, waking on Wan or Lan won't work. The back "activity" light is blinking on my ethernet port on my computer, as well as on the router, so I would assume the network card is on and able to receive a signal. Any ideas? Suggestions? What can I do to troubleshoot the problem?

I have a Windows XP SP2 desktop PC. It connects to the internet with a LAN cable (there's a wireless router for my laptop in between). The problem should be software because: when i tried connecting the same LAN cable to my laptop it works when i plugin the LAN cable (onboard) the green light is on and the orange light flickers when i tried the other cable (that feeds the wireless router) i have the same problem it worked a few days ago, nothing specific changed I tried removing the ethernet card from the device manager, and windows automatically reinstalled it. What could cause this? What can I try?

  • Redirect traffic to local address so iOS speedtest app measures LAN speed

    - by ivan_sig
I have mounted a Speedtest Mini server on a local LAMP, so I can test my LAN speeds effortlessly just by opening the URL with a Flash enabled web browser, the thing is, I want my iOS and Android devices to test with the LAN server too, not with the WAN, as I'm trying to measure LAN-Only performance. Is there a way so I can redirect the traffic intended to an specific external IP (The one of the real server) to my local server?. I know the servers IP as a short Wireshark analysis gave me the data, but still searching for a way to make that redirect. I have Jailbreak and root on my devices, so playing with system files is not a problem. I've tried mounting a proxy and making redirects by the hosts file and domain names, but it looks like Ookla's app relies on IP address only.

  • USB-to-Serial showing gibberish at 115200 Baud

    - by Mose
I've got a serious problem which drives me crazy because I tried everything I could think of. First of all, I made a video: http://youtu.be/boghkuq7L_s but please read the following text for more information, not only view the video! When using a USB-to-Serial interface everything works as long as I don't go beyond 57600 Baud. At higher rates I only get giberish like this: év.b0JNLYÆÿ¿iëd0U²(kßÞb! ú]/xscB!ï¯!BoXûÿ1ïâÖCÿ6ÌAnè*íÌC)º¿BíÞØ.C.@ÆÃwHJÂs "YE:ñ.èFðÌCÊ÷ÞÄ !x H w6@BtbHJ ̪ Ì6ì H¾a¿bH.">îvy®;f<ßBÌ pL¨fæHE þ¼MBÞI What makes the problem so strange is, I exchanged every component and the problem still presists. I tried differtent OSes (Ubuntu, WinXP, Win7, OSX 10.7) with 32 and 64 Bit. I tried USB-to-Serial interface from FTDI and Prolific. I tried reading the output from my Raspberry PI and from an Asterisk Appliance. I changed the cables and the wiring. Nothing helped. In the video I made a example with a old Notebook with native COM and put the USB-to-Serial to the same connection as "sniffer" (only Rx and GND connected) to make sure the output and everything is ok as one can see on the native port. The voltage is ok. Settings for both are 115200 Baud, 8 Bit with 1 Stop and no flow control. Native is ok. USB is messed up. I used the newest drivers and double checked all connections. I have no idea what is wrong here. As I couldn't find anyone describing problems like this I question my long experiance in computer science and think I'm doing some completly wrong... Please help :-/

  • Diagnosing and debugging LAN congestion / connection issues

    - by John Weldon
What are the top N tools / methodologies used to diagnose and repair network issues? Given a LAN, for example, where users are able to consistently ping an outside server, but any data intensive connections are flaky; how would you begin solving the network issues? I imagine issues like congestion, bandwidth constraints, throughput constraints, etc. are all factors, but I don't know how to diagnose those issues. I'm especially interested in LAN environments (rather than WAN)

  • Stream music via M3U file in LAN in realtime

    - by Kush
What I want to do is to setup a "sort of" radio in my college LAN in which, when I play music in any of the media player installed in my computer, I can share the same to other PCs on LAN via just an M3U file. Also, other PCs should be playing the music on that M3U file, what is being played right now on my "music" server (just like a radio station). I'm looking for a free solution that works on Windows 7 (and if possible, also on Linux) Thanks.

  • Make Apache server available on a LAN via custom ServerName

    - by samwatt
Hi, is it possible to set up an Apache server on a machine which is part of a LAN, then allow machines on the LAN to access the server via a custom ServerName (instead of Localhost). I want to serve a simple website in an office space using a short ServerName (no ports etc if possible), but I want to make sure this is possible (after originally being certain it was!). THanks in advance.
