  • C# locale-aware MaskedTextBox mask for DateTime values

    - by Timothy
C# locale-aware MaskedTextBox mask for DateTime values I'm working through FXCop/Code Analysis's Globalization warnings and would like to know the proper, locale-aware way to set and get DateTime values through a MaskedTextBox. My form has a MaskedTextBox element with its Culture property set to "en-US", and its Mask property set to "00/00/0000" (the predefined Short date format). maskedTextBox.Text = now.ToString() displays without leading-zeros as "42/42/010_", yet I would like it to be represented as "04/24/2010".

  • LINQ-to-SQL: How can I prevent 'objects you are adding to the designer use a different data connecti

    - by Timothy Khouri
I am using Visual Studio 2010, and I have a LINQ-to-SQL DBML file that my colleagues and I are using for this project. We have a connection string in the web.config file that the DBML is using. However, when I drag a new table from my "Server Explorer" onto the DBML file... I get presented with a dialog that demands that do one of these two options: Allow visual studio to change the connection string to match the one in my solution explorer. Cancel the operation (meaning, I don't get my table). I don't really care too much about the debate as why the PMs/devs who made this tool didn't allow a third option - "Create the object anyway - don't worry, I'm a developer!" What I am thinking would be a good solution is if I can create a connection in the Server Explorer - WITHOUT A WIZARD. If I can just paste a connection string, that would be awesome! Because then the DBML designer won't freak out on me :O) If anyone knows the answer to this question, or how to do the above, please lemme know!

  • QTcpServer not emiting signals

    - by Timothy Baldridge
Okay, I'm sure this is simple, but I'm not seeing it: HTTPServer::HTTPServer(QObject *parent) : QTcpServer(parent) { connect(this, SIGNAL(newConnection()), this, SLOT(acceptConnection())); } void HTTPServer::acceptConnection() { qDebug() << "Got Connection"; QTcpSocket *clientconnection = this->nextPendingConnection(); connect(clientconnection, SIGNAL(disconnected()), clientconnection, SLOT(deleteLater())); HttpRequest *req = new HttpRequest(clientconnection, this); req->processHeaders(); delete req; } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { QCoreApplication a(argc, argv); HTTPServer http(0); http.listen(QHostAddress::Any, 8011); qDebug() << "Started: " << http.isListening() << http.serverAddress() << ":" << http.serverPort(); return a.exec(); } According to the docs my acceptConnection() slot should be called whenever there is a new connection. I can connect into this tcp port with a browser or telnet, and I don't get any errors, so I know it's listening, execution never goes to my acceptConnection() function? And yes my objects inherit from QObject, I've just stripped the code down to the essential parts above. There's no build errors....

  • ctypes and PySide

    - by Timothy Baldridge
I'm building an app with PySide, there's some image manipulation that needs to be done and using Python code for this is way too slow. Therefore I hacked out a .dll file that will do it for me. The function definition is as follows: extern "C" { QRectF get_image_slant(QImage *img, float slantangle, float offset) { Now I can load this function in via ctypes. But I can't seem to get ctypes to accept a QImage. I tried calling it like this: ext.get_image_slant(QImage(), 0, 0) And the reply I get is: File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ctypes.ArgumentError: argument 1: <type 'exceptions.TypeError'>: Don't know how to convert parameter 1 I tired casting the QImage to a c_void_p and it doesn't like that either. From what I can tell QImage() in python should map exactly to a QImage * in C, but Python doesn't seem to understand that.. Is there any way to force the casting?

  • What makes MVVM uniquely suited to WPF?

    - by Reed Copsey
The Model-View-ViewModel is very popular with WPF and Silverlight. I've been using this for my most recent projects, and am a very large fan. I understand that it's a refinement of MVP. However, I am wondering exactly what unique characteristics of WPF (and Silverlight) allow MVVM to work, and prevent (or at least make difficult) this pattern from working using other frameworks or technologies. I know MVVM has a strong dependency on the powerful data binding technology within WPF. This is the one feature which many articles and blogs seem to mention as being the key to WPF providing the means of the strong separation of View from ViewModel. However, data binding exists in many forms in other UI frameworks. There are even projects like Truss that provide WPF-style databinding to POCO in .NET. What features, other than data binding, make WPF and Silverlight uniquely suited to Model-View-ViewModel?

  • Rails fields_for :child_index option explanation

    - by Timothy
I have been trying to create a complex form with many nested models, and make it dynamic. Now I found that making a nested model isn't difficult with accepts_nested_attributes_for, but making it nested and dynamic was seemingly impossible if there were multiple nested models. I came across http://github.com/ryanb/complex-form-examples/blob/master/app/helpers/application_helper.rb which does it very elegantly. Could anyone shed some light on lines 13 and 16? 13 form_builder.object.class.reflect_on_association(method).klass.new and 16 form_builder.fields_for(method, options[:object], :child_index => "new_#{method}") do |f| From intuition, line 13 instantiates a new object, but why must it do so many method calls? I couldn't find any documentation for the :child_index option on line 16. When the form is created, a very large number is used as an index for new models, whereas existing models are indexed by their id. How does this work?

  • In TSQL (SQL Server), How do I insert multiple rows WITHOUT repeating the "INSERT INTO dbo.Blah" par

    - by Timothy Khouri
I know I've done this before years ago, but I can't remember the syntax, and I can't find it anywhere due to pulling up tons of help docs and articles about "bulk imports". Here's what I want to do, but the syntax is not exactly right... please, someone who has done this before, help me out :) INSERT INTO dbo.MyTable (ID, Name) VALUES (123, 'Timmy'), (124, 'Jonny'), (125, 'Sally') I know that this is close to the right syntax. I might need the word "BULK" in there, or something, I can't remember. Any idea?

  • ruby recursive regex

    - by Reed Debaets
    So why is this not working? I'm creating a regex that will match a formula (which is then part of a larger standard description). But I'm stuck here, as it doesn't appear to want to match embedded formulas within a formula. stat = /(Stat3|Stat2|Stat1)/ number_sym = /[0-9]*/ formula_sym = /((target's )?#{stat}|#{number_sym}|N#{number_sym})\%?/ math_sym = /(\+|\-|\*|\/|\%)/ formula = /^\((#{formula}|#{formula_sym}) (#{math_sym} (#{formula}|#{formula_sym}))?\)$/ p "(target's Stat2 * N1%)".match(formula).to_s #matches p "((target's Stat2 * N1%) + 3)".match(formula).to_s #no match p "(Stat1 + ((target's Stat2 * N1%) + 3))".match(formula).to_s #no match

  • WPF: Once I set a property in code, it ignores XAML binding forever more... how do I prevent that?

    - by Timothy Khouri
I have a button that has a datatrigger that is used to disable the button if a certain property is not set to true: <Button Name="ExtendButton" Click="ExtendButton_Click" Margin="0,0,0,8"> <Button.Style> <Style> <Style.Triggers> <DataTrigger Binding="{Binding IsConnected}" Value="False"> <Setter Property="Button.IsEnabled" Value="False" /> </DataTrigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> </Button.Style> That's some very simple binding, and it works perfectly. I can set "IsConnected" true and false and true and false and true and false, and I love to see my button just auto-magically become disabled, then enabled, etc. etc. However, in my Button_Click event... I want to: Disable the button (by using ExtendButton.IsEnabled = false;) Run some asynchronous code (that hits a server... takes about 1 second). Re-enable the button (by using ExtendButton.IsEnabled = true;) The problem is, the very instant that I manually set IsEnabled to either true or false... my XAML binding will never fire again. This makes me very sad :( I wish that IsEnabled was tri-state... and that true meant true, false meant false and null meant inherit. But that is not the case, so what do I do?

  • C# NullReferenceException when passing DataTable

    - by Timothy
    I've been struggling with a NullReferenceException and hope someone here will be able to point me in the right direction. I'm trying to create and populate a DataTable and then show the results in a DataGridView control. The basic code follows, and Execution stops with a NullReferenceException at the point where I invoke the new UpdateResults_Delegate. Oddly enough, I can trace entries.Rows.Count successfully before I return it from QueryEventEntries, so I can at least show 1) entries is not a null reference, and 2) the DataTable contains rows of data. I know I have to be doing something wrong, but I just don't know what. private delegate void UpdateResults_Delegate(DataTable entries); private void UpdateResults(DataTable entries) { dataGridView.DataSource = entries; } private void button_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Thread t = new Thread(new ThreadStart(PerformQuery)); t.Start(); } private void PerformQuery() { DateTime start = new DateTime(dateTimePicker1.Value.Year, dateTimePicker1.Value.Month, dateTimePicker1.Value.Day, 0, 0, 0); DateTime stop = new DateTime(dateTimePicker2.Value.Year, dateTimePicker2.Value.Month, dateTimePicker2.Value.Day, 0, 0, 0); DataTable entries = QueryEventEntries(start, stop); Invoke(new UpdateResults_Delegate(UpdateResults), entries); } private DataTable QueryEventEntries(DateTime start, DateTime stop) { DataTable entries = new DataTable(); entries.Columns.Add("colEventType", typeof(Int32)); entries.Columns.Add("colTimestamp", typeof(Int32)); entries.Columns.Add("colDetails", typeof(String)); ... conn.Open(); using (SqlDataReader r = cmd.ExecuteReader()) { while (r.Read()) { entries.Rows.Add(result.GetInt32(0), result.GetInt32(1), result.GetString(2)); } } return entries; }

  • How do you attract programmers in rural areas?

    - by Reed Copsey
I run a software development group for a very small, but stable and established company in a small town, somewhat outside of the "big city". Unfortunately, the "programmer" labor pool is much smaller due to the size of the city. There are many positives to working in this area, especially in terms of quality of life (particularly for people interested in outdoor activities), lower cost of living, great schools and neighborhoods, etc. However, I've always had difficulty attracting high-qualtiy, experienced developers. For those of you who hire developers outside of large cities: Where do you advertise to find good developers? Many of the large sites are very focused in certain metropolitan areas, and seem inappropriate places to advertise if you're outside of that main region. How do you attract quality developers to rural (or at least less metropolitan) locations? Do you find that you make more sacrifices in your hiring due to a smaller labor pool? Or do you just wait, and take extra time to attract people? What sacrifices do you expect to make if you are outside of the main developer-rich cities? For all of the developers out there... What would entice you to working in a smaller town? Are there things that would stand out and make you willing to relocate or at least apply to a position that was not nearby? What specific qualities would help you want to move outside of the city? In the past, I've had difficulty with finding good people. Most of the people who've applied and been willing to move out to a more rural location seem like the types that can't keep a quality job elsewhere. I'd like to know what advice people have to attracting quality technical staff. I don't believe its the work itself that's been the problem - The work is both interesting and challenging, and nearly 100% new development. The developers I have seem very happy with their situation - they love the work, the atmosphere, etc. It's more a matter of finding willing, able developers. Edit: More info after the first couple of answers: Right now, some of my best developers telecommute (some work from overseas); however, for this question, I'm trying to figure out how to get people who want to live and work full time locally. I need some people with whom I interact every day.

  • Why This Maintainability Index Increase?

    - by Timothy
I would be appreciative if someone could explain to me the difference between the following two pieces of code in terms of Visual Studio's Code Metrics rules. Why does the Maintainability Index increase slightly if I don't encapsulate everything within using ( )? Sample 1 (MI score of 71) public static String Sha1(String plainText) { using (SHA1Managed sha1 = new SHA1Managed()) { Byte[] text = Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(plainText); Byte[] hashBytes = sha1.ComputeHash(text); return Convert.ToBase64String(hashBytes); } } Sample 2 (MI score of 73) public static String Sha1(String plainText) { Byte[] text, hashBytes; using (SHA1Managed sha1 = new SHA1Managed()) { text = Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(plainText); hashBytes = sha1.ComputeHash(text); } return Convert.ToBase64String(hashBytes); } I understand metrics are meaningless outside of a broader context and understanding, and programmers should exercise discretion. While I could boost the score up to 76 with return Convert.ToBase64String(sha1.ComputeHash(Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(plainText))), I shouldn't. I would clearly be just playing with numbers and it isn't truly any more readable or maintainable at that point. I am curious though as to what the logic might be behind the increase in this case. It's obviously not line-count.

  • Process touches behind the UINavigationBar

    - by Reed Olsen
In my application, I'm displaying a fullscreen image in a 320 x 480 frame. After I display the image, I fade the navigation bar out to allow the user to see the whole picture. When the user taps in the area where the navigation bar was, I would like to bring the navigation bar back. This is very similar to what happens in the iPhone Photos app. Unfortunately, after I've hidden the UINavigationBar, I can't process touches on the screen where the navigation bar once was. I believe this is because the origin of the parent view is right below the navigation bar: How can I process touches in this area to bring the nav bar back?

  • Can't create new xib files in Xcode projects

    - by Reed Olsen
This one is a doozy... My buddy just downloaded the iPhone SDK on his Snow Leopard MacBook Pro. No matter what kind of project he creates (Window Based, View Based, etc...,) he can't create or use his own xib files. The project will compile and run fine until he adds a new xib file. Here are some symptoms: When he selects a pre-generated xib in Xcode (such as MainWindow.xib), no preview is shown on the right hand side. Double clicking on this file will open it in interface builder (This is correct behavior). When he selects his own custom xib, the preview pane displays the XML content of the xib. Double clicking on his custom xib opens up the XML file in Xcode - as if it were a standard code file (This is jacked up). Opening his custom xib from finder opens it in Interface Builder. When building the application, the build warning says something to the effect of "Warning: No rule to process file /path/to/CustomXib of type sourcecode.xib for architecture i386" At runtime he gets the error: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[UIViewController _loadViewFromNibNamed:bundle:] was unable to load a nib named "MyCustomXib"' We've uninstalled Xcode from the command line and reinstalled. I've verified that it's the right version for his machine. I'm stumped!

  • Unable to send email using 3rd party server ( IIS 7, Windows Server 2008, ASP.NET )

    - by Reed
Hello All, I am using IIS 7 on Server 2008. I just tried migrating my app from an older platform - everything works fine, except the email feature. This is my config: < mailSettings > < smtp from="[email protected]" deliveryMethod="Network" > < network host="mail.xyz.com" port="25" userName="[email protected]" password="123" /> < / smtp > < /mailSettings > Whenever I need to send an email I use: SmtpClient smtp = new SmtpClient(); smtp.Send(email); The funny thing is I get absolutely no errors, however the email is never sent. The outbound firewall ruleset allows SMTP traffic. Any idea what I did wrong?

  • How can I force asp.net webapi to always decode POST data as JSON

    - by Nathan Reed
I getting some json data posted to my asp.net webapi, but the post parameter is always coming up null - the data is not being serialized correctly. The method looks something like this: public HttpResponseMessage Post(string id, RegistrationData registerData) It seems the problem is that the client (which I have no control over) is always sending the content-type as x-www-form-urlencoded, even though the content is actually json. This causes mvc to try to deserialize as form data, which fails. Is there anyway to get webapi to always deserialize as json, and to ignore the content-type header?

I've created a PHP DOM xml piece and saved it to a string like this: <?php // create a new XML document $doc = new DomDocument('1.0'); ... ... ... $xmldata = $doc->saveXML(); ?> Now I can't use the headers to send a file download prompt and I can't write the file to the server, or rather I don't want the file laying around on it. Something like a save this file link or a download prompt would be good. How do I do it?

  • Scheduling of tasks to a single resource using Prolog

    - by Reed Debaets
I searched through here as best I could and though I found some relevant questions, I don't think they covered the question at hand: Assume a single resource and a known list of requests to schedule a task. Each request includes a start_after, start_by, expected_duration, and action. The goal is to schedule the tasks for execution as soon as possible while keeping each task scheduled between start_after and start_by. I coded up a simple prolog example that I "thought" should work but I've been unfortunately getting errors during run time: "=/2: Arguments are not sufficiently instantiated". Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated startAfter(1,0). startAfter(2,0). startAfter(3,0). startBy(1,100). startBy(2,500). startBy(3,300). duration(1,199). duration(2,199). duration(3,199). action(1,'noop1'). action(2,'noop2'). action(3,'noop3'). can_run(R,T) :- startAfter(R,TA),startBy(R,TB),T>=TA,T=<TB. conflicts(T,R1,T1) :- duration(R1,D1),T=<D1+T1,T>T1. schedule(R1,T1,R2,T2,R3,T3) :- can_run(R1,T1),\+conflicts(T1,R2,T2),\+conflicts(T1,R3,T3), can_run(R2,T2),\+conflicts(T2,R1,T1),\+conflicts(T2,R3,T3), can_run(R3,T3),\+conflicts(T3,R1,T1),\+conflicts(T3,R2,T2). % when traced I *should* see T1=0, T2=400, T3=200 Edit: conflicts goal wasn't quite right: needed extra TT1 clause. Edit: Apparently my schedule goal works if I supply valid Request,Time pairs ... but I'm stucking trying to force prolog to find valid values for T1..3 when given R1..3?

  • How to drill down with jQuery?

  • How to make an equation span the whole page / line in LaTeX?

    - by Reed Richards
    I have this equation and it's quite big (basically a FDM one) but it aligns with the text and then continues out on the right side to the nothingness. I've tried stuff like \begin{center} and \hspace*{-2.5cm} but to no avail. I want it to use the whole line not just from the left-margin and out to the right. How do I do it and do I need to install some special package for it? I use the \[ instead of the displaymath like this \[ Equation arrays here \] The code \[ \left( \begin{array}{cccccc} -(2\kappa+\frac{hV\rho}{2}) & (\frac{hV\rho}{2}-\kappa) & 0 & \cdots & 0 \\ -\kappa & -(2\kappa+\frac{hV\rho}{2}) & (\frac{hV\rho}{2}-\kappa) & 0 & \cdots \\ 0 & -\kappa & -(2\kappa+\frac{hV\rho}{2}) & (\frac{hV\rho}{2}-\kappa) & 0 & \cdots \\ \vdots & 0 & \ddots & \vdots \\ \vdots & \vdots & \vdots & -\kappa & -(2\kappa+\frac{hV\rho}{2}) & (\frac{hV\rho}{2}-\kappa) \\ 0 & \vdots & \vdots & 0 & \kappa - \frac{2h\kappa_{v}}{\kappa}(\frac{hv\rho}{2} - \kappa) & -2\kappa \\ \end{array} \right) \left( \begin{array}{c} T_{1} \\ T_{2} \\ \vdots \\ T_{n} \\ \end{array} \right) = \left( \begin{array}{c} Q(0) + \kappa T_{0} \\ Q(h) \\ Q(2h) \\ \vdots \\ Q((n-1)h) \\ 2\frac{\kappa_{v}}{\kappa_{v}}T_{out} \\ \end{array} \right) \]

  • ruby memory leak Gdk::PixbufLoader

    - by Reed Debaets
So I'm beginning to wonder how leaky the gnome2 libraries for ruby1.8.6 are. #!/usr/bin/env ruby require 'gtk2' while true sleep 0.1 pixbuf = Gdk::PixbufLoader.new pixbuf = nil end this leaks about 16kb/sec according to watch -n 1 ps -o rss -p <process id> This is compounded if you start trying to write a chunk of large chunks of image data to it using pixbuf.last_write img_data Any ideas how to get around this (and the second issue)? I need to update image data within my code but it seems like anything that ends up using a pixbuf leaks like a sieve.
