How to configure SVN server for my own project

I work with a team on an Android project using Eclipse IDE, we need to use a version control and we need to access the repo remotely, I have no experience using or installing servers, a little experience using SVN on Windows, but I still have problems connecting to it remotely. I need to use no-ip.com to change my IP, however; I failed to make VisualSVN server to work with no-ip. What options do I have? The best thing is to get it work with Windows if not, I have another computer that is running Ubuntu 12.4.1, I have installed apache2svn on it trying to get it work, the svn is installed, I went through tutorials to configure accessing protocols, but I can't figure out how to access it remotely from another computer? Can someone tell me the steps I need to get this job done and I can do my search for each step? (Please explain each step as some keywords or phrases I may not be familiar with) EDIT: Also worth noting, that my company has a website hosted on a remote server, can we use it as a repo? and how? It's running Linux

It’s just fast. very fast. and Firefox has become the IE of alternative browsers in terms of speed and memory. Don’t even get me started on IE. TweetDeck – get a complete view of what’s up on twitter Total Commander – my still favorite file manager, over five years now. KatMouse – will scroll any window your hovering on, even if it’s not an active window, when you use scroll the wheel on it. PowerIso or Daemon Tools – for loading up ISO images of discs LogMeIn Ignition – quick access to your LogMeIn computers for online Backup: JungleDisk or BackBlaze KeePass – save important passwords MS Security Essentials – free anti virus that’s quoest and doesn’t make a mess of your system. for home: uTorrent – a torrent client that can read rss feeds (like the ones from ezrss.it ) Camtasia Studio and SnagIt – for recording and capturing the screen, and then adding cool effects on top. Foxit PDF Reader – much faster that adove reader. Toddler Keys (for home) – for when your baby wants to play with your keyboard. I love the fact that you can right click in windows exporer on any file and select “select left side to compare”, then right click on another file and select “compare with left side”. Great usability thought! PostSharp 2.0 – for addind system wide concepts into your code (tracing, exception management). Goes great hand in hand with.. SmartInspect – a powerful framework and viewer for tracing for your application. lots of hidden features. Crypto Obfuscator – a relatively new obfuscation tool for .NET that seems to do the job very well. Crypto Licensing – from the same company –finally a licensing solution that seems to really fit what I needed. And it works. Fiddler 2 – great for debugging and tracing http traffic to and from your app. Debugging Tools for Windows and DebugDiag - great for debugging scenarios. still wanting more? I think this should keep you busy for a while. Regulator and Regulazy – for testing and generating regular expressions Notepad 2 – for quick editing and viewing with syntax highlighting

vs10 not deploying all required files - then not over-writing updated files

I'm in the habit of deploying to alternating folders (/inetpub/wwwroot/mySite & /inetpub/wwwroot/mySite2) so if something unexpected happens with the deploy i can quickly swap back to a previous version just by changing the path in IIS So i was deploying an MVC2 webapp to a empty folder figuring that VS would send up all the files it needs. Not even close. Initially, it didn't even upload a couple required nHibernate.dlls. Later, after manually copying files referenced in the thrown exceptions, i just copied all the files from the previous compile and then re-published over the top expecting VS to over-write the changed files. Failed that too. No reports of errors by VS....just failed to over-write a number of pre-existing (but changed/updated) files. Hard to believe these kinds of errors (and lack of feedback that errors were encountered) in a state of the art tool like VS. Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. I'm using VisualSVN for source control and connect to my colocated server via a VPN-based mapped network drive (so I can use FileSystem to publish). (both of which can complicate file properties) VS08 had more choices for which files it would send up - i found i needed to use the 'All files in source' on an initial deployment, the 'Replace Matching'. If I choose 'delete all existing...' I'd be back to square 1 and have to deploy with the 'All files in source project folder'. But VS10 doesn't have the 'All files in source project folder. I ended up manually copying the files - which seems not right in the extreme. Are these known issues others have to deal with? What's best practice for deploying a web-app? thx

Linq causes collection to disappear when trying to use OrderByDescending

For background, I am using MongoDB and Rob Conery's linq driver. The code I am attempting is thus: using (var session = new Session<ContentItem>()) { var contentCollection = session.QueryCollection.Where(x => x.CreatedOn < DateTime.Now).OrderByDescending(y => y.CreatedOn).ToList(); ViewData.Model = contentCollection; } this will work on one machine, but on another machine I get back no results. To get results i have to do using (var session = new Session<ContentItem>()) { var contentCollection = session.QueryCollection.Where(x => x.CreatedOn < DateTime.Now).ToList(); ViewData.Model = contentCollection.OrderByDescending(y => y.CreatedOn).ToList(); } I have to do ToList() on both lines, or no results. If I try to chain anything it breaks. This is the same project, all dll's are locally loaded. Both machines have the same framework, versions of Visual studio and addons. the only difference is one has VisualSVN the other AnkhSVN. I can't see those causing the problem. Also, while debugging, on the machine that does not work you can see the items in the collection, and if you remove ordering all together it will work. This has got me completely stumped.

Msysgit bash is horrendously slow in Windows 7

I love git and use it on OS X pretty much constantly at home. At work, we use svn on Windows, but want to migrate to git as soon as the tools have fully matured (not just TortoiseGit, but also something akin the really nice Visual Studio integration provided by VisualSVN). But I digress... I recently installed msysgit on my Windows 7 machine, and when using the included version of bash, it is horrendously slow. And not just the git operations; clear takes about five seconds. AAAAH! Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Edit: It appears that msysgit is not playing nicely with UAC and might just be a tiny design oversight resulting from developing on XP or running Vista or 7 with UAC disabled; starting Git Bash using Run as administrator results in the lightning speed I see with OS X (or on 7 after starting Git Bash w/o a network connection - see @Gauthier answer). Web Site Performance and Assembly Versioning – Part 2 Versioning Combined Files Using Subversion

Ok so it took a while to post this second part. Many apologies, we had a big roll out of a new platform at work and many things had to get sidelined. So this is the second part in a short series of website performance and using versioning to help improve it. Minification and Concatination of JavaScript and CSS Files Versioning Combined Files Using Subversion – this post Versioning Combined Files Using Mercurial – published shortly In the previous post we used AjaxMin to shrink js and css files then concatenated them into one file each which had the file name of site-script.combined.min.js and site-style.combined.min.css. These file names are fine, but you can configure IIS 7 to cache these static files and so lower the amount of data transferred between server and client. This is done by editing the response headers in IIS. 1. In IIS7 Manager, choose the directory where these files are located and select HTTP Response Headers. 2. Check the Expire Web Content and set a time period well into the future. 3. When refreshing the web page, the server will respond with HTTP 304 forcing the browser to retrieve the file from its cache. 4. As can be seen in FireBug, the Cache-Control header has a max age of 31536000 seconds which equates to 365 days. The server will always send this HTTP 304 message unless the file changes forcing it to send new content. To help force this we can change the file name based on the latest build using the SVN revision number in the filename. So we have lowered data transfer on content that hasn’t changed, but forced it to be sent when you have made a change to the css or js files. Now to get the SVN revision number in to the file name. 1. Import the MSBuildCommunityTasks targets which can be dowloaded from here. 1: <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath) 2: \MSBuildCommunityTasks 3: \MSBuild.Community.Tasks.Targets" /> 2. Edit the BeforeBuild target to call out to svn and get the latest revision 1: <SvnVersion LocalPath="$(MSBuildProjectDirectory)" 2: ToolPath="$(ProgramFiles)\VisualSVN Server\bin"> 3: <Output TaskParameter="Revision" PropertyName="Revision" /> 4: </SvnVersion> 3. Set it to update the project AssemblyInfo.cs file for the svn revision. 1: <FileUpdate Files="Properties\AssemblyInfo.cs" 2: Regex="(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)" 3: ReplacementText="$1.$2.$3.$(Revision)" /> 4. Now edit the AfterBuild target to get the full dll version. You could combine these two steps and just get the version from svn, I am working on one project that updates the AssemblyInfo file and another project that allows manual editing of the file, but needs that version within the file name; so I just combined the two for this post. 1: <MSBuild.ExtensionPack.Framework.Assembly 2: TaskAction="GetInfo" 3: NetAssembly="$(OutputPath)\mydll.dll"> 4: <Output TaskParameter="OutputItems" ItemName="Info" /> 5: </MSBuild.ExtensionPack.Framework.Assembly> 6: <Message Text="Version: %(Info.AssemblyVersion)" 7: Importance="High" /> 5. Install Trac on 64bits Windows 7

I'm configuring a new Developing Server that came with Windows 7 64bits. It must have installed Trac with Subversion integration. I install Subversion with VisualSVN 2.1.1, clients with TortoiseSVN 1.6.7 and AnkhSVN 2.1.7 for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 integration. All works fine! my problem begun when going to Trac installation. I install python 2.6 all fine. Trac hasn't a x64 windows installer, so I installed it manually by compiling it with python console (C:\Python26\python.exe C:/TRAC/setup.py install). After that, I can create TRAC projects normally, the Trac core is working fine. And so the problem begins, lets take a look at the Trac INSTALL file: Requirements To install Trac, the following software packages must be installed: Python, version = 2.3. Subversion, version = 1.0. (= 1.1.xrecommended) Subversion SWIG Python bindings (not PySVN). PySQLite,version 1.x (for SQLite 2.x) or version 2.x (for SQLite 3.x) Clearsilver, version = 0.9.3 (0.9.14 recommended) Python: OK Subverion: OK Subversion SWIG Python bindings (not PySVN): Here I face the first issue, he asks me for 'cd' to the swig directory and run the 'configure' file, and the result is: C:\swigwin-1.3.40> c:\python26\python.exe configure File "configure", line 16 DUALCASE=1; export DUALCASE # for MKS sh ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax PySQLite, version 1.x (for SQLite 2.x) or version 2.x (for SQLite 3.x): Don't need, as Python 2.6 comes with SQLLite Clearsilver, version = 0.9.3 (0.9.14 recommended): Second issue, Clearsilver only has 32bit installer wich does not recognize python installation (as registry keys are in different places from 32 to 64 bits). So I try to manually install it with python console. It returns me a error of the same kind as SWIG: C:\clearsilver-0.10.5>C:\python26\python.exe ./configure File "./configure", line 13 if test -n "${ZSH_VERSION+set}" && (emulate sh) >/dev/null 2>&1; then ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax When I simulate a web server using the "TRACD" command, it runs fine when I disable svn support but when I try to open the web page it shows me a error regarding ClearSilver is not installed for generating the html content. AND (for making me more happy) This TRAC will run over IIS7, I mustn't install Apache... I'm nearly crazy with this issue... HELP!!!

General Questions on setting up Subversion (w/Netbeans) and web development workflow.

Hey guys, I am web developer who currently works mostly on his own but, some projects require outside coding help (my brother.) Anyway, after running in to the problem of "working on the same files" and "saving over each others edits" I decided to research ways to avoid this. Through the help of stackoverflow I decided on subversion. My setup is the following: A windows 2008 server with a clean install. My desktop which is on the local network of the server. Then my brothers desktop which is at his house, not on lan. We both prefer to use netbeans for development. My Questions: How do we set this thing up correctly and most optimally. Here is my current setup and work flow. dev site: in the past I just created sub domains with my web host for test sites (company1.bythepixel.com, company2.bythepixel.com), and editted those sites with netbeans set up having remote sources (ftp). how do i set up my netbeans now? should I set it up with remote sources? I guess I may need to set up a web server on my local server. I'm just not sure of the work flow. When i hit save in netbeans.. will it update the repository.. then do i need to update the site from the repository somehow? live site: when going live, i would just copy all the files from the dev site into the live site. from what i gather i should be able to update the site from the dev repository? Currently I am toying with virtualsvn server (http://www.visualsvn.com/server/) on my local server. It looks like it is set up to use the http protocol. Is there advantages to this or should I consider something that does the file//. Do you recommend any other subversion software that would run on my 2008 box? how will my brother connect? should i set up a permanent vpn from his house to mine? suggestions? (not that important) how do I deal with databases, there anyway to do subversion on database? I know I have a lot of questions and I am trying to read / make sense of the free online subversion book, but its all so overwhelming! Wish there was a small subversion for dummies guide :)
