• Spotlight Infinite Indexing issue (external data drive)

  This is an external drive, formerly a boot drive which is now in use only to access music files (sibelius, audio, midi, live, logic etc.) without transferring the data into a new boot system, partly because of the issue I am about to describe, but mostly because the majority of the data is mainly there for archival purposes. The user is a composer and prominent musician and needs to be able to rehash the data at will. I have tried several things - here is a list: - make complete filesystem clone with antonio diaz's ddrescue - run Disk Warrior on copy, repair whatever errors occurred - wipe out all ACLs on entire drive - set all permissions to the same value - wide open 777 - remove any system data (applications, system files, including hidden files to the best of my knowledge) by selecting only non-system/app data and using Carbon Copy Cloner to put only the data of interest onto a newly formatted drive - transfer data to newly formatted drive folder by folder, resetting the spotlight index in between adding each to observe for issues (interesting here is that no issues occurred except for in Documents folder - when I transferred only the Documents folder to a newly formatted drive on its own - no trouble. It appears almost as thought it may not be the content but the quantity or specific combination of data that results in problems) - use DataRescue to transfer the data to yet another newly formatted drive to expose any missed hidden files Between each of the above steps I stopped Spotlight (search for anything beginning with md in Activity Monitor - All Processes and quitting it), deleted the .Spotlight-V100 directory from the affected drive. Restart Splotlight indexing by adding drive to Spotlight privacy list and removing it. In each case the same issue occurs - Spotlight begins indexing normally (or so it seems), then the index estimated time increases, usually to 4 hours remaining. This is where it gets stuck and continues to predict 4 hours remaining but never finishes. Sometimes I can't eject the drive and have to quit the md.. processes from Activity Monitor to be able to eject the drive without Force Eject. Once I disconnect the drive after the 4 hours remaining situation - if I reattach it, Spotlight forever estimates remaining time and never gets going again. So there it is. It is apparently not a filesystem issue, not a permissions issue and not tied to any particular piece of hardware or protocol (used USB and FW drives). I have tried this on several machines (3 to be precise) and in 10.5.8 and 10.6.5. Simply disabling Spotlight on this volume is not an option because the owner has no clue where things are as the data on the volume dates back to music projects and compositions from 2003 and before.   Recently, I have been trying to learn programming and improve my ability in writing method level code through practices on websites such as Codingbat.com However in the recent weeks I have been stuck for weeks at the last 2-3 questions of String-2/Array-2 and early String/Array-3 problems. It feels really tempting for me to give up and google online for the solutions, but I'm afraid that by doing so I may end up not improving my ability at all. I wonder if this is common and when faced with such situations how long do 1 wait before giving up to look at the solutions or to continue spending more weeks on trying to solve the problems by yourself? How do 1 really engage in effective deliberate practice to improve programming ability and attain the necessary problem solving techniques? Any formal techniques available to tackle the never seen before problems?

• How do you balance the speed of Sprints with the customer's conservative adoption schedule?

  I'd prefer to have sprints that last 3-4 weeks, but customers don't want to adopt new feature/function every 3-4 weeks. Existing customers are conservative and, once we meet their minimum bar for features and capabilities, they like to remain on a stable release for much longer than 4 weeks. Even a 3-month cycle would be pushing it for them. On the other hand, newer customers tend to have more feature requests, and are willing to follow sprints. But this willingness dissipates after we've met their bar. How do you balance the need for rapid sprints with the customer's conservative view of application change? I'm particularly interested in SaaS scenarios.

• App Engine charges in November 2011 [closed]

  I had a billing enabled test application on Google App Engine left over from early 2011. I have not received a bill in many months because I have not been hitting the URL and according to the activity monitor, nobody has. Then unexpectedly in November 2011, I received 2 bills in as many weeks for quite minimal amounts. Checking the monitor it looks like nobody has been hitting the URL and according to the SQL-like search, there is nothing in the Datastore. I know that GAE has left the "preview" in recent weeks but I am not sure how that would affect what is essentially a dormant application with no Datastore objects. Has GAE started charging for completely unused applications in recent weeks? Edit: Most of my applications were already disabled and I have just disabled the only one that was enabled but unused the past several months. If I get another bill next week that should be informative.

• Batch convert AppleWorks files into PDF within originating folder, delete original file?

  Probably AppleScript is the way to go with this - I have found scripts online that do this, but snag on oversize printable area and put files in the same folder - I need files to stay in the folder the source came from. If the script also deleted the original AppleWorks file, that would be even better, but not required. I have tried the last script from this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/10127260#10127260#10127260 Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  I have a rather enormous Music collection. The music itself is approaching the 1TB mark. I am storing that on an external drive already. My iTunes library files are in their default location (/Users/me/Music/iTunes). My iTunes media folder is on an external drive /Volumes/iTunes/iTunes Music This has been working as expected. Now I would like to store just the contents of the Movies folder in the iTunes media folder on a separate drive. Apparently, iTunes doesn't like aliases or symlinks. I saw somewhere that one could mount a volume in a different directory than the default /Volumes. I would like to permanently mount my new Movies volume in the directory /Volumes/iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies. I know there is a command to do this, but how does one configure Mac OS 10.6.4 to always automatically mount that volume in this directory? I hope someone can enlighten me... If I find a solution, I can finally import all my movies into iTunes and be able to search them and stuff - it would be a dream. Thanks, M

• how to get more vacation time than "policy" allows

  At my company, the maximum vacation is 3 weeks for everyone but executives. Therefore I cannot even start negotiating for an increase to 4 weeks.. it's a non-starter because it's "against policy"... even though I think my experience and value to the company warrant it, and I've gotten 4 weeks at previous jobs. (I know I could have made a "hard stand" before taking this job, but that's water under the bridge) Any advice? I was kind of thinking of taking the "you want to be competitive" tack to get them to change their policy but I don't know where to find the kind of data I would need to support that.

• How do I get date form week, working also with 53-week years? c#

  Hey, I have made a function to cound the weeks in a year, and that works fine. The problem is that I need a method to get the mondaydate of the week. This is a swedish calendar. The code below works well for years that have 52 weeks, but some years(like 2009) has 53 weeks. Then I got a date from januari as the mondaydate(cant be right). So please help me to get it to work for all years. What I probably could do is check if the year has 53 weeks and then do some checks but I'd like it to go smooth without special checks. • How should I pitch moving to an agile/iterative development cycle with mandated 3-week deployments?

  I'm part of a small team of four, and I'm the unofficial team lead (I'm lead in all but title, basically). We've largely been a "cowboy" environment, with no architecture or structure and everyone doing their own thing. Previously, our production deployments would be every few months without being on a set schedule, as things were added/removed to the task list of each developer. Recently, our CIO (semi-technical but not really a programmer) decided we will do deployments every three weeks; because of this I instantly thought that adopting an iterative development process (not necessarily full-blown Agile/XP, which would be a huge thing to convince everyone else to do) would go a long way towards helping manage expectations properly so there isn't this far-fetched idea that any new feature will be done in three weeks. IMO the biggest hurdle is that we don't have ANY kind of development approach in place right now (among other things like no CI or automated tests whatsoever). We don't even use Waterfall, we use "Tell Developer X to do a task, expect him to do everything and get it done". Are there any pointers that would help me start to ease us towards an iterative approach and A) Get the other developers on board with it and B) Get management to understand how iterative works? So far my idea involves trying to set up a CI server and get our build process automated (it takes about 10-20 minutes right now to simply build the application to put it on our development server), since pushing tests and/or TDD will be met with a LOT of resistance at this point, and constantly force us to break larger projects into smaller chunks that could be done iteratively in a three-week cycle; my only concern is that, unless I'm misunderstanding, an agile/iterative process may or may not release the software (depending on the project scope you might have "working" software after three weeks, but there isn't enough of it that works to let users make use of it), while I think the expectation here from management is that there will always be something "ready to go" in three weeks, and that disconnect could cause problems. On that note, is there any literature or references that explains the agile/iterative approach from a business standpoint? Everything I've seen only focuses on the developers, how to do it, but nothing seems to describe it from the perspective of actually getting the buy-in from the businesspeople.

• Icons on CMFCOutlookBar

  I'm using CMFCOutlookBar from the Feature Pack, and I'm trying to put an icon on the "button" of the tabbed pane - the thing that slides up and down in the bar, when you select a pane. The pane API includes a "SetIcon" function, but this doesn't do anything as far as I can tell. Neither does the "SetTabHicon" function of the bar. Does anyone know how to do this?

• jquery $(window).width() and $(window).height() return different values when viewport has not been r

  I am writing a site using jquery that repeatedly repeatedly calls $(window).width() and $(window).height() to position and size elements based on the viewport size... In troubleshooting I discovered that I am getting slightly different viewport size reports in repeated calls to the above jquery functions when the viewport is not resized... Wondering if there is any special case anyone knows of when this happens, or if this is just the way it is. The difference in sizes reported are 20px or less, it appears. It happens in Safari 4.0.4, Firefox 3.6.2 and Chrome 5.0.342.7 beta on Mac OS X 10.6.2... I didn't test other browsers yet because it doesn't appear to be specific to the browser. I was also unable to figure out what the difference depends upon - if it isn't the viewport size, could there be another factor that makes the results differ? Any insight would be appreciated... • Server 2008 R2 How to Change Windows 7 Basic Theme Color

  We're deploying thin clients connecting to a terminal server farm. The computers have high visibility to the public and I would like them to at least look presentable and not like something out of 1995. So I installed the Desktop Experience feature and enabled the Theme service. The server will not support Aero because it has no 3D graphics, but we can enable the Windows 7 Basic theme, which has the Aero look without the 3D effects. The problem with that theme is that you can select any window color you want, as long as it's baby boy blue. Is there a way to make those windows another color? The window color controls do nothing.

• How can I set the time that Windows 7 changes the background in the background slideshow?

  I've set up my Windows 7 background slideshow with a few choice wallpapers and set it to cycle daily, nothing excessive. Glad to see this feature built into Windows now. My problem is that the change happens at 3 in the afternoon, the time when I originally set up the background. I'd like it to switch at night, so I can come in to work each day to a fresh look. Is there a registry entry I can edit to manually set that switch time? Waiting until midnight to set it doesn't count :P

• apache sendmail: trying to change user "from" address from apache to domain account

  I apologize if I am asking a question already answered, but my problem isn't really that I haven't found an answer. I have, in fact, found a half-dozen different "solutions" to my problem, tried them all, in various combinations, and have been consistently unsuccessful. The goal All I want to do is change the envelope "from" address for all email sent from [email protected] to [email protected], always. What I've already done I am running Apache, PHP, and sendmail on CentOS 5.5, [email protected]. We have an SMTP server at 192.168.0.4. The domain's email accounts are all at @domain.org. I have successfully set up "smart host" using this line in the sendmail.mc file: define(`SMART_HOST', `192.168.0.4')dnl Then I set up masquerading, and was hopeful this would solve it. I have this in the .mc file: FEATURE(`masquerade_entire_domain')dnl FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope')dnl FEATURE(`allmasquerade')dnl MASQUERADE_AS(`domain.org')dnl MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(`domain.org.')dnl MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(`localhost.localdomain.')dnl This rewrites "to" addresses, but not "from" addresses. Testing from the command line: sendmail -v [email protected] Always is shown from the local user (in this case root, or my local user account). I had read that "sendmail" command sometimes bypasses masquerading. Nevertheless, using the "mail" command has the same result. After that, I have explored several "solutions", including: mailertable virtusertable FEATURE(`accept_unresolvable_domains')dnl LOCAL_DOMAIN(`localhost.localdomain')dnl FEATURE(`genericstable')dnl /etc/mail/access file /etc/mail/local-host-names file /etc/mail/trusted-users file All to no affect. The last thing I've tried So, I decided to go in a different direction, and try to set the envelope "from" address via PHP, using either the configuration in /etc/php.ini, or adding the -f parameter to the mail() function or to sendmail command. Help Please help. What do I need to change? Should I just start over in the sendmail.mc file? It has a ton of config options stuffed in it, over days of trying things. Why is changing the envelope "from" address via the command line generating a "User unknown" error?

• What is the netmask equivalent on the verision of route for the Mac

  In order to create some special routes for debugging I used the following command on my linux server: sudo route add -net 10.78.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 gw 10.101.1.1 which works, and sets up the routes I need. But when I run the same command on my Mac I get: route: bad address: netmask I'm guessing that the version of route that is included in OS X requires a different format but I'm at a loss to figure it out.

• Converting a .bat executable to Mac

Before we upload tar files to our website we run this script which to the best of my knowledge simply unlocks all of the permissions to the tar and all the images within. If someone could help me in "translating" it to run on my Mac that would be awesome! • RAID--0 " TWO " DRIVES SSD ONLY Should I use on-board / Software RAID OR a RAID Card / Control

  I am looking at going with a TWO Drive Only SSD RAID-0 Configuration And was wondering if I would get better performance / Speed from the Use of a RAID Controller / Card Verses just using the Software RAID on my Mother Board. I have herd conflicting reports , Again I only Plan on Running " 2 " SSD Drives in RAID-0 Config I have No- problem spending the extra money for a good controller but only if I am going to benifit performance wise , Otherwise if there is no notable Gain I will just use the Software RAID that my HP-180-T came with Intel- 3.33 GHZ , 6-Core , 12-GB of DDR-3. I have a huge External drive for All Storage and am not concerned about Data loss just looking for pure speed. And if a Controller will benifit my performance Wht type of card would one suggest?

  When I compare a dir in DOSBox 0.74 against a dir from Windows 7 command prompt, the 8.3 filenames differ. Long format (both drives and directories): 2012-07-30_abcdefg-abcde 2012-07-30_abcdefg-abcde.7z 2012-08-06_abcdefg-abcde 2012-08-06_abcdefg-abcde.7z 2012-10-22_IIS-LogFiles 2012-10-22_IIS-LogFiles.zip 2012-11-14_selective-abcde DOSBox 0.74 (dir): 2012-0~1 2012-0~3 2012-1~1 2012-1~3 2012-0~2 7Z 2012-0~4 7Z 2012-1~2 ZIP Windows 7 (dir /x): 2012-0~1 2012-0~1.7Z 2012-0~2 2012-0~2.7Z 2012-1~1 2012-1~1.ZIP 2012-1~2 so for instance if I'm passing in a path to DOSBox, sometimes this happens and whatever I'm trying to automate will fail. Why the difference, and can I change any settings to help DOSBox generate the correct shortnames?

• AutoHotKey temporarily rebind Winkey

  I've got a wireless keyboard that puts some media keys on top of the Function keys, so that by default F4 is actually lock (Rwin & l) and Fn+F4 is a real F4. So I'd like to basically switch those around. Here's what the key history shows: VK SC Type Up/Dn Elapsed Key ------------------------------------- 73 03E d 17.32 F4 ; Fn+F4 73 03E u 0.16 F4 5C 15C d 2.96 Right Windows ; F4 4C 026 d 0.00 L 5C 15C u 0.13 Right Windows 4C 026 u 0.00 L This doesn't do anything: SC15C & SC026::MsgBox,Pressed F4 But this prints that I hit F4 then goes to the login screen: Rwin & l::MsgBox,Pressed F4 So how can I stop it from switching to the login screen? Ideally I'd like F4 (which registers as Rwin & l) to just send F4, Fn+F4 to send Rwin & l, and also have them work with other keys (e.g., a manual !F4 should still close a window). Is this possible?
