Windows Azure and dynamic elasticity

Is there a way do do dynamic elasticity in Windows Azure? If my workers begin to get overloaded, or queues start to get too full, or too many workers have no work to do, is there a way to dynamically add or remove workers through code or is that just done manually (requires human intervention) right now? Does anyone know of any plans to add that if its not currently available?

ConfigurationManager.AppSettings is empty?

Hello All, I have a VS2008 ASP.NET Web Service Application running on the local IIS of my XP machine. A separate project in the same solution uses test methods to invoke the WS calls, and run their processes. When I added a web reference to the WS App, VS2008 created a Settings.settings file in the Properties folder to store the address of the web reference. This process also created a new section in the Web.config file called applicationSettings to store the values from Settings.settings When my application attempts to retrieve configuration values from the appSettings section of the Web.config file, via ConfigurationManager.AppSettings[key], all values are null and AppSettings.AllKeys.Length is always zero. I even reverted the Web.config file to before the web reference was added, and made sure it was exactly the same as a system-generated web.config file for a new project that works fine. After comparing the reverted Web.config and a new Web.config, I addded one simple value in the appSettings section, and still no luck with ConfigurationManager.AppSettings[key]. 256 Worker Role 3D Rendering Demo is now a Lab on my Azure Course

Ever since I came up with the crazy idea of creating an Azure application that would spin up 256 worker roles (please vote if you like it ) to render a 3D animation created using the Kinect depth camera I have been trying to think of something useful to do with it. I have also been busy working on developing training materials for a Windows Azure course that I will be delivering through a training partner in Stockholm, and for customers wanting to learn Windows Azure. I hit on the idea of combining the render demo and a course lab and creating a lab where the students would create and deploy their own mini render farms, which would participate in a single render job, consisting of 2,000 frames. The architecture of the solution is shown below. As students would be creating and deploying their own applications, I thought it would be fun to introduce some competitiveness into the lab. In the 256 worker role demo I capture the rendering statistics for each role, so it was fairly simple to include the students name in these statistics. This allowed the process monitor application to capture the number of frames each student had rendered and display a high-score table. When I demoed the application I deployed one instance that started rendering a frame every few minutes, and the challenge for the students was to deploy and scale their applications, and then overtake my single role instance by the end of the lab time. I had the process monitor running on the projector during the lab so the class could see the progress of their deployments, and how they were performing against my implementation and their classmates. When I tested the lab for the first time in Oslo last week it was a great success, the students were keen to be the first to build and deploy their solution and then watch the frames appear. As the students mostly had MSDN suspicions they were able to scale to the full 20 worker role instances and before long we had over 100 worker roles working on the animation. There were, however, a few issues who the couple of issues caused by the competitive nature of the lab. The first student to scale the application to 20 instances would render the most frames and win; there was no way for others to catch up. Also, as they were competing against each other, there was no incentive to help others on the course get their application up and running. I have now re-written the lab to divide the student into teams that will compete to render the most frames. This means that if one developer on the team can deploy and scale quickly, the other team still has a chance to catch up. It also means that if a student finishes quickly and puts their team in the lead they will have an incentive to help the other developers on their team get up and running. As I was using “Sharks with Lasers” for a lot of my demos, and reserved the sharkswithfreakinlasers namespaces for some of the Azure services (well somebody had to do it), the students came up with some creative alternatives, like “Camels with Cannons” and “Honey Badgers with Homing Missiles”. That gave me the idea for the teams having to choose a creative name involving animals and weapons. The team rendering architecture diagram is shown below. Render Challenge Rules In order to ensure fair play a number of rules are imposed on the lab. · The class will be divided into teams, each team choses a name. · The team name must consist of a ferocious animal combined with a hazardous weapon. · Teams can allocate as many worker roles as they can muster to the render job. · Frame processing statistics and rendered frames will be vigilantly monitored; any cheating, tampering, and other foul play will result in penalties. The screenshot below shows an example of the team render farm in action, Badgers with Bombs have taken a lead over Camels with Cannons, and both are leaving the Sharks with Lasers standing. What tools can be used to monitor a web application? Beyond "doesn't 404"

I have an internal web application that has recently gone through a major version upgrade. I would like to monitor this application over the weekend and look for 'soft' errors. I will still need to spot check things by hand, but there are some common failure patterns that I think I can automate. Examples include data with bad formatting, blank rows in tables (indicates missing non-critical data), patterns for identifiers ("TEST" means one of my devs left a testing feed on), etc. I think there are applications out there that can be scripted to do things like: 1. log in 2. Go to $URL 3. select 3rd link in $LIST or $PATTERN 4. Check HTML from that link for $PATTERNS 5. Email report Are these goals sane? What applications/tools can help with this?

Is there a software package that safely allows SSH via web on simple web host?

I want to be able to use a secured web page on my shared web host to make SSH connections out to any destination. A shared web host is cheap and easy to maintain, and usually allows ssh to the web server. There are times I'd like to ssh into my web server, but don't have direct ssh connectivity. I'm aware of consoleFISH, Ajaxterm, and Anyterm. The problem is consoleFISH is a man-in-the-middle by design, and Ajaxterm/Anyterm require running a daemon process on the hosting server. Web hosts can usually support cron jobs, but not continuously running daemon processes. Additional Apache modules are usually out, too, as they require reconfiguration of the server and affects all other customers. Are there any software packages out there I can run on my shared web hosting account that provide a true ssh experience with these limitations?

WCF Service in Azure with ClaimsIdentity over SSL

Hello , Created a WCF service as a WebRole using Azure and a client windows application which refers to this service. The Cloud Service is refered to a certificate which is created using the "Hands On Lab" given in windows identity foundation. The Web Service is hosted in IIS and it works perfect when executed. I've created a client windows app which refers to this web service. Since WIF Claims identity is used, I have a claimsAuthorizationManager Class, and also a Policy class with set of defilned policies. The Claims is set in the web.config file. When I execute the windows app as the start up project, the app prompts for authentication, and when the account credentials are given as in the config file, it opens a new "Windows Card Space" Window and Says "Incoming Policy Failed". When I close the window the System throws and Exception The incoming policy could not be validated. For more information, please see the event log. Windows Azure Worldwide availability

Hi, I've been reviewing Windows Azure platform for some time, and can't find answer to one very important question. If I deploy my application within a cloud, how it will be reached from different places worldwide? For example if I have a web application with a database and want it to be accessible to users in UK, US, China and etc. Can I be sure that any user in the world will get almost the same request processing time? I think of it this way. 1. User sends request (navigates in browser to my web site) 2. This request gets in a cloud in a nearest location (closest to user MS Data Center?) 3. It is processed by an instance of my web application (in nearest location, with request to my centralized DB which can be far away but SQL request goes via MS internal network, which I believe should be very fast). 4. Response sent to user. Please let me know if I'm wrong. Thanks.

Java And I am currently going through 5th chapter of the well grounded rubyist book by David A. Thomas. I came to know that learning ruby is beneficial for good knowledge of rails. So currently I am going through the basics of ruby. And learning rails in parallel. I want to know if in this scenario is it practically feasible to understand rails and develop an application/website in it within the time frame of 4 months. I need to develop an application which have atleast 3 complexity (complex functionality). Any ideas of good application for rails beginners is welcomed. But the application should be large or if it is small than it should have some complexity. Time is a constraint for me. I would have to develop application for college work but rails technology is my choice as I want to learn it.

How does one get started with web development for mobile devices (including phones)? I know some old good HTML & JS, but I'm wondering what the modern way is. To make it concrete, I need to implement a client for an enterprise app. Think of a login-protected dashboard for managers. Given that I only have basic knowledge and have never implemented such applications, what do I need to take into account when choosing platform and technology? Shall I go for Android / iPhone, or HTML & JS, or HTML5? What are the general pros and cons that I need to consider? What resources (preferably online) do you recommend for learning the rudiments? I mean especially HTML & JS: What does the site need to be like to work great on smartphones (and not only on desktops)? I mean possible UI glitches, limited support for some HTML/JS features, page size, and whatever other important details are there.

Web Application: Combining View Layer Between PHP and Javascript-AJAX

I'm developing web application using PHP with CodeIgniter MVC framework with a huge real time client-side functionality needs. This is my first time to build large scale of client-side app. So I combine the PHP with a large scale of Javascript modules in one project. As you already know, MVC framework seperate application modules into Model-View-Controller. My concern is about View layer. I could be display the data on the DOM by PHP built-in script tag by load some data on the Controller. Otherwise I could use AJAX to pulled the data -- treat the Controller like a service only -- and display the them by Javascript. We're currently reconsidering technologies and frameworks to get more agile with "simple" RMS CRUD-based projects. In short, short-living things like this Right now we have a custom extension on top of SmartGWT but after some time it has proven not to be flexible enough. I also personally dislike the java-js compilation process and the whole GWT codebase. Not only is the design ugly, it also makes certain low-level js things very complicated if not completely impossible. So what I'm looking for is: closest to web as possible, like JSF or possibly Tapestry, it is very important to be able get "low" and weave framework if necessary. Happens more often than we thought. datagrid capable - Ext.js & PrimeFaces looks pretty good, Vaadin does too. db-schema generators (optional, no matter in which way) If it were only on me, I'd probably stick to Ext.js + custom rest-based java solution, possibly generated from database schema (not sure about concrete tooling yet). I only have experience with vanilla Ext.js, vanilla GWT and JSF 2.0 / Seam, so it hard for me to judge or even propose other frameworks. What would be your proposition? What are the problems you've faced? What was your solution and how hard do you think it was to deal with them in "big picture"?

Error using SoapClient() in PHP [migrated]

I'm trying to access WSDL(Web Service Definition Language) file using SoapClient() of PHP. I found that WSDL file is authenticated. I tried with passing credentials on an array by another parameter and active SSL on my server, still I'm getting an error. Strategy for restoring state via URL in web apps

This is a question about modern web apps, where a single page is loaded, and all subsequent navigation is done by XHR calls and modifying the DOM. We can use libraries that manipulate the hash string, which let us navigate by URL and support the back/forward buttons. But to use those libraries, we need to be able to move the UI from any one state to any other. Is there a good strategy for moving between UI states, that also allows them to be restored from scratch when you load a new URL? In a complex app, you might have a lot of different states. You don't want to reload the entire UI each time you change states. But you also don't want to require separate methods for moving from every state to each every state. Typically we need to: Restore a state from scratch, when you enter a new URL or hit Reload. Move from one state to another, when you use the Back/Forward buttons. Move from one state to another, when you perform an action within your app (like clicking a link). Move to certain states that shouldn't be added to the history, like ones that appear after form submissions. Move to some states that are built on the previous state, like a drill-down list. When you perform actions within your app, there's the additional question of which comes first: Do you change the URL, listen for the URL change, and change your state in response to it? Or do you change your state, then change the URL, but don't do anything in response? Does anyone have some experience to share on this topic?

multi user web game with scheduled processing?

I have an idea for a game which I am in the process of designing, but I am struggling to establish if the way I plan to implement it is possible. The game is a text based sports management simulation. This will require players to take certain actions through a web browser which will interact with a database - adding/updating and selecting. Most of the code required to be executed at this point will be fairly straightforward. The main processing will take place by applications which are scheduled to run on the server at certain times. These apps will process transactions added by the players and also perform some automatic processing based on the game date. My plan was to use an SQL server database (at last count I require about 20 tables) and VB.net for all the coding (coming from a mainframe programming background this language is the simplist for me to get to grips with). I will also need a scheduling tool on the server. Can anyone tell me if what I am planning is feasible before I dive into the actual coding stage of my project?

I'm getting started to develop Web to Print system. My main concern is which client-side techology should I use: jQuery/CSS Flex/ActionScript or something else? For now, idea is that user/customer choose Product eg: Business card Attributes: Dimensions,Paper type, ... etc Template or blank Adjust product (editor) Preview & order Output should be PDF 300dpi. My main issue is: adding/adjusting text in editor. (font size, font family...). Because application should be cross browser. And I think that 10px Arial can't be the same in Firefox 5 and IE 8. It must be pixel perfect in every browser. If somebody order $100 of business cards, and text is different that he/she saw when ordering - that is a big problem. So, Flash platform should be the answer. But, as I see it's dying technology, 2012 is here - HTML5 is replacing Flash rapidly. I hope that you understand me, so every guideline or few smart words would be very appreciating.

I'm working as a web developer and I want to be able to determine if I'm efficient. Does this include the how long it take to accomplish tasks such as: Server side code for the site logic with one language or multiple php,asp,asp.net. Client side code like javascript with jquery for ajax, menus and other interactivity Page layout, html, css (color, fonts (but I have no artistic sense!)) The needs of the site and how it will work (planning) How can i judge how long it will take to complete a website? The site has CMS for adding and editing news, products, articles on the experience of the company. Also, they can edit team work, add Recreational Activities and a logo gallery with compressed psd download, and send messages to cpanel and to email. You are starting from scratch except JQuery and PHPmailer. How can I estimate how long the job will take, and how can I calculate the required time to finish any new projects? I'm so sorry for many scattered questions, but I'm in my first experiment and I want to take benefits from the great experience of those who have it.

Making simple forms in web applications

How do you work with forms in your web applications? I am not talking about RESTful applications, I don't want to build heavy front-end using frameworks like Backbone. For example, I need to add "contact us" form. I need to check data which was filled by user and tell him that his data was sent. Requirements: I want to use AJAX. I want to validate form on back-end side and don't want to duplicate the same code on front-end side. I have my own solution, but it doesn't satisfy me. I make an AJAX request with serialized data on form submit and get response. The next is checking "Content-type" header. html - It means that errors with filling form are exists and response html is form with error labels. - I will replace my form with response html. json and response.error_code == 0 - It means that form was successfully submited. - I will show user notification about success. json and response.error_code != 0 - Something was broken on back-end (like connection with database). other - I display the following message : We have been notified and have started to work with that problem. Please, try it later. The problem of that way is that I can't use it with forms that upload file. What is your practise? What libraries and principles do you use?

Standards & compliances for secure web application development?

I am working with developers right now that write code the way they want and when i tell them to do it other way they respond that its just matter of preference how to do it and they have their way and i have mine. I am not talking about the formatting of code, but rather of way site is organized in classes and the way the utilize them. and the way they create functions and process forms etc. Their coding does not match my standards, but again they argue that its matter of preference and as long as goal achieved the can be different way's to do it. I agree but their way is proven to have bugs and we spend a lot of time going back and forth with them to fix all problems security or functionality, yet they still write same code no matter how many times i asked them to stop doing certain things. Now i am ready to dismiss them but friend of mine told me that he has same exact problem with freelance developers he work with. So i don't want to trade one bad apple for another. Question is is there some world wide (or at least europe and usa) accepted standard or compliance on how write secure web based applications. What application architecture should be for maintainable application. Is there are some general standard that can be used for any language ruby php or java govern security and functionality and quality of code? Or at least for PHP and MySQL i use for my website. So i can make them follow this strict standard and stop making excuses.

Web Crawler for Learnign Topics on Wikipedia

When I want to learn a vast topic on wikipedia, I don't know where to start. For instance say I want to learn about Binary Stars, I then have to know other things linked on that pages and linked pages on all the linked pages and so on for the specified number of levels. I want to write a web crawler like HTTracker or something similiar, that will display a heiarchy of the links on a certain page and the links on those linked pages.I wish to use as much prewritten code as possible. Here is an example: Pretending we are bending the rules by grabing links from only the first sentence of each pages The example archives and "processes" two levels deep The page is Ternary operation The First Level In mathematics a ternary operation is an N-ary operation The Second Level Under Mathmatics: Mathematics (from Greek µ???µa máthema, “knowledge, study, learning”) is the abstract study of topics encompassing quantity, structure, space, change and others; it has no generally accepted definition. Under N-ary In logic,mathematics, and computer science, the arity i/'ær?ti/ of a function or operation is the number of arguments or operands that the function takes Under Operation In its simplest meaning in mathematics and logic, an operation is an action or procedure which produces a new value from one or more input values ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I need some way to determine what oder to approach all these wiki pages to learn the concept ( in this case ternary operations )... Following along with this exmpakle, one way to show the path to read would a printout flowout like so: This shows that the first sentence of the Mathematics page doesn't link to the first sentence of pages linked on ternary page two levels deep. (Please tell me how I should explain this ) --- In otherwords, the child node of the top pages first sentence, ternary_operation, does not have any child nodes that reference the children of the top pages other children nodes- N-ary and operation. Thus it is safe to read this first. Since N-ary has a link to operations we shoudl read the operation page second and finally read the N-ary page last. Again, I wish to use as much prewritten code as possible, and was wondering what language to use and what would be the simpliest way to go about doing this if there isn't already somethign out there? Should I learn the easier framework as a start? [closed]

I've been a programmer for 2 years. I learned Java SE, C from college and learned Cobol from the workplace. I've noticed that there is a hype about framework and I actually don't know what is a framework. It is so cool that my colleague once said you cannot find a new job without knowing something like struct spring hibernate. And we should know Java EE too because it was aimed for enterprise application. I've never code something such as server-client web application, and I think I need to try it out. But which language should I code in? I can't decide between the following 2: 1) Java. It is heavily used by many company so I could easily reuse the experience gained. But Java and its related framework are pretty heavy (for the machine and operation). It is on-demand. 2) ROR. It is cool. The syntax of ruby is simple. I can get a better hand on it. And maybe I can learn the concept easily and possibly correctly. However, not much company here would use it. All the job ads are about J2EE/C#. Should I learn the easy one or the difficult one? Not to mention there are a lot of frameworks out there for Java, which makes the decision much more difficult.

How to customize web-app (pages and UI) for different customers

We have an ASP.NET web-application which has become difficult to maintain, and I'm looking for ideas on how to redesign it. It's an employee administration system which can be highly customized for each of our customers. Let me explain how it works now: On the default page we have a menu where a user can select a task, such as Create Employee or View Timesheet. I'll use Create Employee as an example. When a user selects Create Employee from the menu, an ASPX page is loaded which contains a dynamically loaded usercontrol for the selected menuitem, e.g. for Create Employee this would be AddEmployee.ascx If the user clicks Save on the control, it navigates to the default page. Some menuitems involve multiple steps, so if the user clicks Next on a multi-step flow then it will navigate to the next page in the flow, and so on until it reaches the final step, where clicking Save navigates to the default page. Some customers may require an extra step in the Create Employee flow (e.g. SecurityClearance.ascx) but others may not. Different customers may use the same ASCX usercontrol, so in the AddEmployee.OnInit we can customize the fields for that customer, i.e. making certain fields hidden or readonly or mandatory. The following things are customizable per customer: Menu items Steps in each flow (ascx control names) Hidden fields in each ascx Mandatory fields in each ascx Rules relating to each ascx, which allows certain logic to be used in the code for that customer The customizations are held in a huge XML file per customer, which could be 7500 lines long. Is there any framework or rules-engine that we could use to customize our application in this way? How do other applications manage customizations per customer?

What's the canonical process for backing up a website?

This is going to sound terrible, but bear with me. I currently have a cron job that does a mysql dump, a git add all and commit, and a git push to bitbucket. I set this up almost a year ago, when I didn't know much about git, backups, and general web development and administration. I haven't had the time to fix this and do it properly, but the repo has now grown quite big from accumulating large temporary files from my forum, so now I have to do something and I want to do it properly this time around. What processes do semi-large websites and personal site admins use for backing up server content? Based on what I've learned since I set this up, what I'm currently think of doing is: Making changes on a development domain and committing the code frequently Archiving the entire site after a successful deployment from the development domain Having automatic daily database and user-content backups. I still like the idea of backing up sqldumps with git, though. I know git isn't a backup tool and that this is beyond its purpose, but the textual queries that are exported would be easily managed by git and would save a lot of space in archives.

Best way to protect website application code

Background I have a web application that I host on my own server. I have clients who use the application as is, but some have asked if they can host the application on their own server. This enables them to have their own URLS rather than mine. The application only forms part of their website so I'm assuming it will not be possible for my server to respond to a direct call to their domain etc To give some examples, i currently have urls like www.mydomain.com/profile, www.mydomain.com/index.php?option=someoption&view=someview&id=1 What my clients' want is www.theirdomian.com/profile, www.theirdomian.com/index.php?option=someoption&view=someview&id=1 etc Question My question is, what is the best way for me to allow them to use their own URLs with my application, without giving them all the backend source code and databases to install on their server? One way I thought would be to create a router.php file that sits on their server. The router then asks my server to output the html. The router modifies all the links etc in the html source and outputs the new html through the clients server. When a link is clicked on the clients site, the router receives the request and modifies the url to get the data from my server etc. Is this an effective way to achieve what I want, or is it way off the mark.
