• How do I clear a WebView's content before loading a page?

  I have an embedded WebView in my Cocoa application in which I load an external web page. Each time the user clicks on a button, the view opens and shows the page. The problem is that the second time the user opens the WebView, the previous page is still visible. Instead I'd like to show a blank/empty page (together with a progress indicator). How can I clear a WebView before loading a new page? The closest solution I could find was to call this: [webView stringByEvaluatingJavaScriptFromString:@"document.open();document.close()"]; Is there a better way to do this? Thanks!

• What object called a method in Obj-C

  Hi, I am looking to write a plugin controller in Cocoa that loads bundles, and exposes a specific set of methods for the plugins to call. My question is this: is it possible to know (any) info about the object that called a method in the controller. When an instantiated plugin calls a method in my plugin controller, I would like to know which of the plugin instances called the method, without having to rely on the plugin sending a pointer to itself as a parameter (I could always validate the pointer they send, but I want to keep the API methods as simple as possible). There may be no perfect solution (and there are simple workarounds), but it's always good to learn some new tricks if possible (or the reasons why it's impossible). Thanks in advance.

• 3D framework/library os x

  Does anyone have any advice as to a good framework for simplifying the generation of 3D models? I am trying to construct a parametric program for tasks such as ship design. Actions such as surface modelling, intersections etc are a must. I have investigated openCASCADE and it shows promise but getting it to integrate into a native cocoa interface is not currently achievable (By me at any rate). All ideas and suggestions welcome. Should I just forget it and integrate an X11 window, if so any tutorials for doing this?

  Hi everyone! I have a main view (subclass of NSView) and as i'm new to cocoa, i'd like to know how to update the view in function of events. I know there are many methods that take events such as -(void)mouseMoved:(NSEvent*)event or - (void)mouseClicked:(NSEvent*)event My algorithm to determine what to do is ready. I want to know where I should update the main view: is it in the -(void)mouseMoved:(NSEvent*)event or in the - (void)drawRect:(NSRect)dirtyRect. And how many controller would you suggest? 1 WindowController or AnalyzeController, SyncController etc. Its quite a while since i have worked with MVC. • Creating a OS X Cocoa App Web View in Xcode 5.0.1

  I created a HTML5 web app that I’m trying to wrap in a web view and submit to the Mac App Store. I’ve done the following: 1) Opened Xcode 5.0.1 and selected “Create a new Xcode project” 2) Under “OS X” I selected “Application” then I selected “Cocoa Application” then “Next” 3) I entered a “Product Name” and a “Company Identifier” then selected “Next” (I left all the other settings untouched) then “Create” 4) Under “General” “Deployment Info” “Deployment Target” I selected 10.6 — because I want the app to be compatible with all versions of OS X that support the Mac App Store 5) I clicked “MainMenu.xib” and selected “Window - My App” 6) From the “Object library” I drug the “Web View” object into my window and made it fill the window size 7) I saved my project and click the Play button in the upper left corner of Xcode The app tries to open but freezes. I don’t get an error in Xcode but it does open “main.m” and highlight “return NSApplicationMain(argc, argv);” in green and says “Thread 1: signal SIGABRT” I was hoping that someone could clarify why this isn’t working? And provide me with the last step to link the web view object? I searched Google and found tutorials for iOS and a few for OS X but for different versions of Xcode.

  In my Cocoa app how can I get the current user's domain when they're logged in via Active Directory? I need to determine two things: 1. If the current user is logged on to an Active Directory domain (only need to handle Active Directory). 2. If 1, the domain of the user. I've found references to Directory Services and the Open Directory Programming Guide but the latter is 10.6 only (I must support 10.5+) and I could not find any examples for the former that gave me an idea of what I needed to do.

  Hi everyone, I have been working on a simple text editor in Cocoa/Objective-C for a practice project and I have come across an error that I would never have expected. I have an NSString for my file's contents as well as an NSString for it's path. When I attempt to write the contents to a file, I use the following method: [FileContents writeToFile: CurrentFileName atomically: NO encoding: NSStringEncoding error: nil]; I've used this method many times without error yet today, I am getting an error: "Expected expression before 'NSStringEncoding'" If anyone can help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated. • Unable to create new virtual hosts using MAMP with OSX Mavericks

  I have been using virtual hosts on my Mac with MAMP, which has worked up until now. I have 2 working virtual hosts that i created in the same manner, which still work, but for some reason I am unable to create any new virtual hosts. When i attempt to go to a newly crated virtual host in my browser it generates a 404 Not Found error. The only thing i can think of possibly after i updated OSX to Mavericks, but i'm not sure what that would have done, or why the old virtual hosts still work. See excerpt below from vhosts.conf file. • Linux RAID: Replacing Failed Drive...permanantly

  Okay, odd question here. I have a server with RAID 5. A drive failed, in a really physically in a really odd way. On the machine it boots and is seen by the BIOS but...no partition can be seen on the drive consistantly (in and out). 2 out of 3 drives working...I made new spare disk and added it, RAID 5 rebuilt clean. All appears well but...when I reboot it keeps trying to use the 2nd drive which doesn't give any partition data, so of course the RAID 5 gets 2 out of 3...again. The status of my drive is as follows: /dev/sda2:Good /dev/sdb2 (drive has physical problem so no partition data) bad, /dev/sdc2:good /dev/sdd2:good. Every time I reboot the mdadm system seems to keep trying to use /dev/sdb which has physical failure (although spins and is detected). /dev/sdd is the new drive I created. I added /dev/sdd to the raid and it rebuilds the raid but this action isn't memorized upon reboot so it keeps listing /dev/sda and /dev/sdc but doesn't use the perfectly good /dev/sdd until I re-add manually. I've tried removing the dead drive with the mdadm tool, but as it cannot see /dev/sdb paritions it will not fail or remove it (says partition doesn't exist). the /etc/mdadm.conf was automatically made on the original OS install which only lists: DEVICE partitions MAILADDR root ARRAY /dev/md2 super-minor=2 ARRAY /dev/md0 super-minor=0 ARRAY /dev/md1 super-minor=1 Basically just the raids to use on boot. I need to remove this semi-dead drive (/dev/sdb) but I'd prefer to know why this is happening before I do. any ideas or suggestions. I supposed I could attempt to clone/replace /dev/sdb (the partitions on drive show up, then disappear shortly after) but given the partition "chester cat" behaviour this seems risky to me and as I have a working "spare" it seems unnecessary. • Can grub handle same release (3.6) but new rc (rc5)?

  can grub handle newer kerner rc ? I am running 3.6.0-rc4 ok, grub update definitely recognizes all required files for rc5, but edit of grub.cfg only shows rc4 after grub-update. D/N matter whether I generate kernel 3.6.0-rc5 or whether I install the .deb files.   I have 3 lxc containers. They were all working fine on 12.10 and I upgraded the containers with do-release-upgrade on the containers to 13.04 and 13.10 and that worked great. • Using open2300 with Ubuntu

  Hello, I am currently running Ubuntu 8.10 and have been trying to use Open2300 to read data from a Lacrosse WS-2310 weather station and report it to the WUnderground server. The program compiles fine but when I try to run it, it does one of two things: usually it pauses for about 4 minutes, then prints "could not reset" to the screen. But sometimes it just hangs forever. It seems like my computer is unable to communicate with the weather station. I have set the serial port as /dev/ttyS0 in the open2300.conf file and i have also tried /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, etc with the same result. As far as I can tell, there are no other settings regarding how Open2300 communicates with the device. Is my serial port locked somehow? It could be something as simple as an incorrect configuration for my serial port or something, but I would have no idea how to check that or change the configuration. • Core Data migration problem: "Persistent store migration failed, missing source managed object model

  The Background A Cocoa Non Document Core Data project with two Managed Object Models. Model 1 stays the same. Model 2 has changed, so I want to migrate the store. I've created a new version by Design Data Model Add Model Version in Xcode. The difference between versions is a single relationship that's been changed from to a one to many. I've made my changes to the model, then saved. I've made a new Mapping Model that has the old model as a source and new model as a destination. I've ensured all Mapping Models and Data Models and are being compiled and all are copied to the Resource folder of my app bundle. I've switched on migrations by passing in a dictionary with the NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption key as [NSNumber numberWithBool:YES] when adding the Persistent Store. Rather than merging all models in the bundle, I've specified the two models I want to use (model 1 and the new version of model 2) and merged them using modelByMergingModels: The Problem No matter what I do to migrate, I get the error message: "Persistent store migration failed, missing source managed object model." What I've Tried I clean after every single build. I've tried various combinations of having only the model I'm migrating to in Resources, being compiled, or both. Since the error message implies it can't find the source model for my migration, I've tried having every version of the model in both the Resources folder and being compiled. I've made sure I'm not making a really basic error by switching back to the original version of my data model. The app runs fine. I've deleted the Mapping Model and the new version of the model, cleaned, then recreated both. I've tried making a different change in the new model - deleting an entity instead. I'm at my wits end. I can't help but think I've made a huge mistake somewhere that I'm not seeing. Any ideas?

• How to trigger an action from a NSTableCellView in view based NSTableView when using bindings

  I'm facing a problem with a view-based NSTableView running on 10.8 (target is 10.7, but I think this is not relevant). I'm using an NSTableView, and I get content values for my custom NSTableCellView through bindings. I use the obejctValue of the NSTableCellView to get my data. I added a button to my cell, and I'd like it to trigger some action when clicked. So far I have only been able to trigger an action within the custom NSTableCellView's subclass. I can get the row that was clicked like this, using the chain: NSButton *myButton = (NSButton*)sender; NSTableView *myView = (NSTableView*)myButton.superview.superview.superview; NSInteger rowClicked = [myView rowForView:myButton.superview]; From there I don't know how to reach my App Delegate or controller where the action is defined. As I am using cocoa bindings, I do not have a delegate on the NSTableView that I could use to trigger my action. Do you have any idea how I could talked back to controller ? Many thanks in advance!

  Hi guys, Firstly i'll preface by saying that i am a complete Cocoa touch/objective c noob (.Net dev having a dabble) I have searched on Google as well as here but cannot seem to find an easy solution. I have a UItabbarcontroller view with a UINavigationController inside its first tab I have the root view for this UINavigationController stored in a seperate class and NIB as i am trying to seperate the data viewing from the data loading (i'm going to reuse the table list in multiple places in my database) and simply pass the root view its data using a loading method and have it take it from there. What i want to happen: App loads and loads the first view of the tab bar (A UINavigationController) The UINavigationController inside the first view loads a root view (a UIViewController with a table view) and sets its title The UINavigationController loads the data from a web service and parses it The UINavigationController sends the data to a loading method inside the UIViewController Am i thinking about this completely wrongly? What currently happens: the first tab bar loads with an empty uinavigationcontroller (no table view) the data methods fire and get the webservice data this child view gets sent its data using the loading method the tableview delegate events fail to fire inside the child view telling it to load the data into the table I just can't seem how to load my second view inside the root view of the navigation controller and then send it my data?

• How can we leverage NSAppearance?

  I was reading the Cocoa documentation and stumbled across some new features in the 10.9 API. From the docs I gather that the NSAppearance class and a related protocol NSAppearanceCustomization Appear to be a means of customizing the appearance of NSView and its descendants. An NSAppearance object represents a file that specifies a standard or custom appearance that applies to a subset of UI elements in an app. An app can contain multiple appearance files and—because NSAppearance conforms to NSCoding—you can use Interface Builder to assign UI elements to an appearance. Typically, you customize a window by using Xcode to create an appearance file that contains the views you want to customize and the custom art that should be applied to them. Xcode transforms the file’s art content into a runtime format that AppKit can draw when the specified views are displayed. Well that all sounds neat and promising, but nowhere in the documentation can I find what an appearance file is or how to make one. Google searches are coming up empty other than for the thin documentation I have already read. I do see that UIKit has a similar sounding UIAppearance class, but from what I can tell this is not a straight port of the UIKit class. Does anybody know how to make this magic "appearance file" and what exactly we can do with it?

• Help with stock ticker style scrolling using Core Animation

  Hi, I'm looking for some guidance on the best way to implement stock ticker style right-to-left scrolling of CALayers in Core Animation on OSX. I'm pretty new to Cocoa and don't know the best way to implement this. I have a continuous stream of news items and stock details that I turn into CALayers (made up of 1 image and a CATextLayer) and I want to animate the CALayers from right to left of my custom view. The news and stock information is constantly updating so I would like to add 1 item at a time to the view, scroll it right to left until the right-most point of the CALayer is showing, then add another CALayer to the view and start scrolling that as well. I would like to do this dynamic updating instead of taking a big snapshot of all my data, turning it into a big horizontal CALayer and scrolling that. I'm looking for guidance on how to achieve this sort of effect - do I manually animate each new CALayer along a path in the view? Or should I be using CAScrollLayer to achieve this effect? Any clues? Edit on 3/20/2010: Seeing as how I couldnt use rangeOfUnit:inUnit:forDate to calculate the number of weeks in a month. I decided to figure out a different way of calculating the same value. I figured I should do this in a non-Gregorian localized way, so I attempted to start with getting the number of days in a week, but I got the result of 28 days in a week. So I started writing more code to figure out why... I wanted to make sure that the type of NSCalendar that I was playing with was in fact what I was supposed to be getting... And that led me to finding some differences...
