  • Updated script for downloading from youtube

    - by asksuperuser
I'm not looking for a software or site to download youtube but for an opensource script in bash or any which is up todate as youtube often changes the download url. I've found this but seems deprecated: http://linux.byexamples.com/archives/302/how-to-wget-flv-from-youtube/ http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread104419.html

  • Change directory upwards to specified goal

    - by haakon
I'm often deep inside a directory tree, moving upwards and downwards to perform various tasks. Is there anything more efficient than going 'cd ../../../..'? I was thinking something along the lines of this: If I'm in /foo/bar/baz/qux/quux/corge/grault and want to go to /foo/bar/baz, I want to do something like 'cdto baz'. I can write some bash script for this, but I'd first like to know if it already exists in some form.

  • Tail and wildcard characters

    - by Mitch
I want to get the last 10 lines of multiple files. I know they all end with "-access_log". So I tried: tail -10 *-access_log But this gives me an error, where as: tail -10 file-* Gives me the output I'd expect. I would think this probably has more to do with BASH then tail. However commands like: cat *-access_log Work fine. Any suggestions?

  • I added __git_ps1 to my PS1 in .bash_profile, now I'm getting (master) for all folders that aren't git repos.

    - by Matthew
    I'm on a Mac (10.6.5). Here's an example of what's going wrong: [m@m ~ (master)]$ cd ~/Documents [m@m ~/Documents (master)]$ cd ~/Applications [m@m ~/Applications (master)]$ cd ~/Library [m@m ~/Library (master)]$ cd ~/Sites/somesite [m@m ~/Sites/somerepo (FEATURE_SOMEFEATURE)]$ Here's the relevant contents of my .bash_profile: source ~/.git-completion.bash PS1='[\u@\h \w$(__git_ps1 " (%s)")]\$ ' I'm using the standard git-completion script - I just copied it to my home directory.

    - by EMKA
I am trying to write a bash script that will rsync only a specific subset of folders. I am trying to figure out a more slick so that I can just add a variables such as FOLDER1='name of folder in home directory' and then rsync -arvz --delete /home/emka/$FOLDER1/ /home/emka/Desktop/Mount/$FOLDER1 Currently I have FOLDER1 through FOLDER13, but I do not want to have the above line thirteen times. Could someone give me a push on how to do this?

  • -bash: ls: command not found at Terminal on MAC OS

    - by art.mania
I need to start using GIT for my projects from now on and I need to use some UNIX commands. but no matter what I do, I always receive "command not found" error. I installed MacPorts, but still cant run any UNIX command :/ When I try ls, I get the error below, same for sudo, or any other command: -bash: ls: command not found and when I try $PATH, I get the lines below: hakan-yilmaz-MacBook-Pro:~ hakanyilmaz$ **$PATH** -bash: /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/bin:/opt/subversion/bin/:PATH: No such file or directory I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.6 I spent 2-3 days and kept googling and trying everything I found at forums, but no success. SOLUTION: I opened .bash_profile with TextWrangler and removed everything else than export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH Then, I reboot that Mac, and WORKING!!!!

  • shell script over SSH ends unexpectedly after running 'ant build'

    - by YShin
I wrote a shell script that runs on remote host to build source code with 'ant build' command, and then distribute the built binary to other servers. However, right after Ant build is over successfully(I can see the command line output saying Build was successful), the ssh session ends and whatever commands after 'ant build' does not get executed. I'm confused what might be cause of this behavior. I suspected that it might be because the 'ant build' command takes too long time, and SSH somehow quits itself after that long command. But I don't think that's correct since if I just do 'sleep 60' in place of 'ant build' command, it actually execute latter commands as intended. I'm new at shell programming, so I might have made some silly misassumption. Can someone provide a pointer to a possible cause of this problem? My shell script #!/bin/bash # Inject some variables ssh -T $SSH_USER@$SSH_URL "setenv REMOTE_BASE_DIR $REMOTE_BASE_DIR; setenv CASSANDRA_SRC_TAR_FILE $CASSANDRA_SRC_TAR_FILE; setenv CASSANDRA_SRC_DIR_NAME $CASSANDRA_SRC_DIR_NAME; setenv CLUSTER_SIZE $CLUSTER_SIZE; setenv REMOTE_REDEPLOY_SCRIPT $REMOTE_REDEPLOY_SCRIPT; /bin/bash" << 'EOF' export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0 cd $REMOTE_BASE_DIR/$CASSANDRA_SRC_DIR_NAME echo "## Building Cassandra source" ant clean build # Anything after this doesn't run echo "## Ant Build is over. • Screen -X exec commands not working until manually attached

    - by James Watt
I have a batch script that starts a java server application inside of a screen. The command looks like this: cd /dir/ && screen -A -m -d -S javascreen java -Xms640M -Xmx1024M -jar javaserverapp.jar nogui After I run the batch script, it starts the server and puts it inside the correct screen. If I list my screens after, I see something like this: user@gtwy /dir $ screen -list There is a screen on: 16180.javascreen (Detached) 1 Socket in /var/run/screen/S-user. However, I have a second batch script that sends automated commands to this server and runs on a different crontab interval. Because of the way the application works, I send commands to it like this (this command tells it to alert connected users "testing 123"): screen -X exec .\!\! echo say testing 123 I've also tried: screen -R -X exec .\!\! echo say testing 123 screen -S javascreen -X exec .\!\! echo say testing 123 Unfortunately, these commands DO NOT WORK. They don't even give me an error message, they just do nothing. HOWEVER - If I manually attach to the screen first (with the below command) and then detach, now I can run any of the above commands flawlessly. I can demonstrate this with a video, if I wasn't clear enough here. screen -r -d Thanks in advance. Update: here is the important parts of /etc/screenrc. • Mac Terminal.app: Force '^C' to be printed when editing current prompt, then aborting it

    - by Stefan Lasiewski
This is the opposite of Prevent “^C” from being printed when aborting editing current prompt. I'm using Bash. When I'm editing the commandline in Bash, and I hit Control-C to abort the commandline, the '^C' character does not display. I would like to see this character. I tried commands like stty -ctlecho and stty ctlecho (which I borrowed from the other question), but this didn't work for me. This behavior seems to be true with my environment on Ubuntu, CentOS and MacOSX. This only happens within Apple's Terminal.App. If I SSH to a remote Linux or FreeBSD box, then ^C is printed. So, this is clearly just a local setting. Update: Here is the output of stty -a, as requested by @quack quixote : $ stty -a speed 9600 baud; 41 rows; 88 columns; lflags: icanon isig iexten echo echoe -echok echoke -echonl echoctl -echoprt -altwerase -noflsh -tostop -flusho pendin -nokerninfo -extproc iflags: -istrip icrnl -inlcr -igncr ixon -ixoff ixany imaxbel iutf8 -ignbrk brkint -inpck -ignpar -parmrk oflags: opost onlcr -oxtabs -onocr -onlret cflags: cread cs8 -parenb -parodd hupcl -clocal -cstopb -crtscts -dsrflow -dtrflow -mdmbuf cchars: discard = ^O; dsusp = ^Y; eof = ^D; eol = <undef>; eol2 = <undef>; erase = ^?; intr = ^C; kill = ^U; lnext = ^V; min = 1; quit = ^\; reprint = ^R; start = ^Q; status = ^T; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; time = 0; werase = ^W; After typing stty sane, stty -a will output the following. • How do I create a Launcher in Ubuntu 9.10 that runs a shell script?

    - by mkelley33
Here's my situation: New to Ubuntu (just installed 9.10 Karmic Koala 64 bit) Purpose: to easily run PyCharm without too much typing (ie. cd... ./pycharm.sh) Want to create desktop Launcher instead of terminal & typing (without resorting to the "Run in Terminal" option) Tried to create Launcher to executes .sh script in Document directory Right-clicked Desktop Create Launcher a. Type == Application; Browse [insert absolute path to .sh script]; no luck b. Type == Application in Terminal; Browse ...ditto I'm open to any other alternatives that involve as little typing as possible. I would like to just start Ubuntu, click Launcher icons, and have terminals spring to life, running the intended scripts. Crazy? No. Lazy? Probably. Productive? Hopefully :)

  • Next generation of command shells?

    - by ignatius
I am curious about if there is any project about a replacement for the current unix-shells (like bash, ash, rsh ...), at least adding some new ideas or paradigm in this area. I was searching but i found very few information, this project http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendly_interactive_shell seems interesting, but not so diferent from the nowadays solutions. What do you think? Do you imagine a linux-distribution on 2020 that still having bash? How can be an evolution of this programs? Br

  • Makefile and rm -f file.{ext1,ext2,ext3} issue

    - by ak91
Hello, Could you explain me, why Makefile rule: clean: rm -f foo.{bar1,bar2,bar3} does not result in removing files: foo.bar1 foo.bar2 and foo.bar3? I believe I saw pattern like that many times in various Makefiles, but I'm currently writing my own Makefile and can't make that rule work correctly (no files are removed). I'm using: gnu make 3.81 gnu bash 4.1.5 Bash evals that pattern as I suspect: $ echo test.{a,b,c} test.a test.b test.c Thanks!

I tried $CONFIG_OPTION=$CONFIG_VALUE But I am getting an error on this line as './Build.bash: line 137: VENDOR_NAME="Default_Vendor": command not found' Thanks.

  • Unix list absolute file name

    - by Matthew Adams
Given an arbitrary single argument representing a file (or directory, device, etc), how do I get the absolute path of the argument? I've seen many answers to this question involving find/ls/stat/readlink and $PWD, but none that suits my need. It looks like the closest answer is ksh's "whence" command, but I need it to work in sh/bash. Assume a file, foo.txt, is located in my home directory, /Users/matthew/foo.txt. I need the following behavior, despite what my current working directory is (I'm calling the command "abs"): (PWD is ~) $ abs foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt $ abs ~/foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt $ abs ./foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt $ abs /Users/matthew/foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt What would "abs" really be? TIA, Matthew

  • How can I kill and wait for background processes to finish in a shell script when I Ctrl+C it?

    - by slipheed
I'm trying to set up a shell script so that it runs background processes, and when I ctrl+C the shell script, it kills the children, then exits. The best that I've managed to come up with is this. It appears that kill 0 -INT also kills the script before the wait happens, so the shell script dies before the children complete. Any ideas on how I can make this shell script wait for the children to die after sending INT? #!/bin/bash trap 'killall' INT killall() { echo **** Shutting down... **** kill 0 -INT wait # Why doesn't this wait?? echo DONE } process1 & process2 & process3 & cat # wait forever
